The moment I sat on the black throne the corridor, the statues, and the core circle vanished.
Subjective time stretched. What the others later told me lasted only twelve minutes outside felt like six full hours inside the test. There was no landscape at first, only pressure that examined every layer of the Cursed Nebula Physique with absolute precision. Then the pressure opened into a sequence of possible lives, each one complete and undeniable while it lasted.
In one life I stood at the centre of a unified force that stretched across every drifting continent and open sea the maps had ever named. The women of the circle held clear positions of power and trust around me. The great clans had been broken or absorbed. The Origin Wound itself answered to the physique that had claimed it. The life ended in quiet dominion that left no equal and no true companion left unaltered by the weight of what I carried.
In another life the circle was gone. I walked the edge of a white scar that cut the world in half, the physique still burning, every bond that had once steadied it burned away by the same power that kept me alive. The isolation was absolute. The life ended without witnesses.
Other lives followed. Some ended in open war against forces that made the great clans look small. Some ended in slow dissolution as the physique outgrew every vessel that tried to stand beside it. Some ended in a throne not unlike the one I sat on, surrounded by statues that had once been living women. Each life carried its own full weight of consequence. None of them offered a clean escape from the selection the voice had named.
The drop of liquid light that had entered my chest expanded through every channel during the sequence, rewriting limits that had still remained after the Heart of Reflection. The advanced stage I had brought into the chamber was taken apart and rebuilt around a deeper foundation. When the final possible life collapsed and the pressure receded, I opened my eyes on the black throne with the crystal fully dissolved into the Cursed Nebula Physique and the power inside me one full stage denser and cleaner than before.
The statues had returned to their original facing positions. The core circle stood exactly where they had been when the test began, though the quality of their attention said they had watched the full twelve minutes of real time without being able to intervene.
Elizabeth crossed the floor first.
"You were gone longer than the light cycle suggested."
"Six hours on the inside," I said, rising. The new depth of power moved with me like an added skeleton of pure force. "The test showed possible endings. Then it finished the advancement."
Vale's eyes narrowed as she measured the change.
"It feels heavier. More settled."
Seraphina nodded once.
"The entire corridor reacted when you opened your eyes. The statues turned back only after the power stabilised."
Outside the spire the change was more immediate.
We stepped back through the long corridor of statues and onto the narrow black ledge. The suspended ocean of liquid light was draining. The pale gold radiance that had held the ships like water now flowed downward in slow, vast curtains, revealing black stone far below. A descending staircase had appeared at the base of the spire, cut from the same seamless material, leading into the newly exposed depth. The alliance fleet hung in the thinning light, captains already signalling urgent questions.
Lady Sable's voice reached us by formation from the flagship.
"The ocean is falling. Whatever you did inside has opened a path the records never described. The fleet cannot follow past this point. Decision."
Elizabeth looked at the staircase, then at me, then at the core.
"We came to the outer gate to learn what the Wound required. We have the key and the advancement. Turning back now leaves the alliance with only half the knowledge it needs."
Vale rested one hand on her blade.
"The path is open. We take it."
Isolde studied the descending stone with the same calm she gave living currents.
"My ships cannot navigate that. But the core can walk it."
Thalia tilted her head, reading the vibrations rising from the newly revealed depth.
"The Wound is aware of the selection. Waiting will not make the path safer."
Sael simply checked her knife and stepped toward the first stair.
One by one the rest of the core gave the same quiet agreement. I sent a final signal to Lady Sable, Lian, Mei, and Rhea: hold the fleet at the current line, maintain the alliance, and expect no further contact until the core returned or the Wound closed the path behind us. Then we began the descent.
The staircase was wide enough for three to walk abreast and steep enough that the liquid light falling past its edges never touched the stone. The air grew colder and denser with every level. The resonance of the Cursed Nebula Physique settled into a steady, low answer to whatever waited below. No one spoke. The only sounds were boots on black stone and the distant, continuous rush of the draining ocean.
After a long descent the staircase opened onto a natural ledge where the black stone of the Wound formed a shallow cave, dry and sheltered from the falling light. The cave was large enough for the full core to rest without crowding. A narrow opening at the back suggested the path continued, but the light cycle — or whatever passed for one this deep — was fading into a dimmer state that made further travel unwise without recovery.
We made camp inside the cave.
There was no celebration and no long discussion of the test or the advancement. The shared knowledge that we had crossed a line few living beings had ever approached sat between us more heavily than any earlier threshold. Food was eaten in silence. Weapons and tools were checked by habit. When the dimness outside deepened into something close to night, the core simply drew together on the dry stone floor.
The contact that followed was slower and heavier than the open nights of the outer storm crossing or the victory celebrations in the Bone City. No one reached for climax as the first goal. Bodies pressed close for the simple confirmation of presence. Elizabeth's forehead rested against mine for a long time before either of us moved further. Vale's strength anchored the group without needing to claim the centre. Isolde's steady calm and Thalia's refined sensitivity created a quiet circuit that the others fed into without urgency. Sael's scarred practicality kept the edges clean. The rest of the core — the twins, Lian, Mei, Rhea, Kora, Sylis, Veyra, Seraphina, Lydia, Feng Lan — filled the remaining space until the cave held a single continuous field of skin and breath and low, shared power.
When the contact finally deepened it stayed deliberate. I moved inside Elizabeth first while the others remained close enough to touch both of us. The new stage of the Cursed Nebula Physique made every slow thrust land with greater weight, yet the pace never rose toward desperation. Vale took the next stretch with the same measured intensity. Isolde and Thalia followed in turn, each receiving the full depth of the advancement without requiring speed. Sael's turn carried the same direct honesty she had shown from the first night she joined the circle. The others wove in and out of the central current as the hours moved, sometimes with me, sometimes with each other, always remaining part of the same unbroken field.
Release, when it came, was long and quiet and shared more than claimed. The cave held the heat of it without needing the louder expressions of safer ground. Afterward the core remained tangled together on the black stone, listening to the distant rush of the still-draining ocean and the deeper silence that rose from the path leading farther into the Origin Wound.
No one kept a formal watch. The selection had already begun, and the first night inside the Wound was spent confirming that the circle which had chosen to walk it remained whole enough to continue when the light returned.
Outside the cave the last curtains of liquid light fell away into the depths. The staircase waited. The true Wound lay ahead, open and aware, and the physique that had accepted its key and survived its throne now carried a stage of power that no previous living carrier had taken beyond this point.
The core slept in one shared space, slower and heavier than before, and let the first night inside the Origin Wound pass without needing to name the line they had crossed.
