"Gu Fan?!"

Gu Chen barely managed to choke out the name as he stepped into the massive stone chamber.

Hearing his name, Gu Fan slowly turned around, and looked at Gu Chen’s disheveled appearance, dust-covered robes, messy hair, and a face full of frustration and he smiled brightly.

"Brother Chen!" Gu Chen squeaked like a kid, "You finally came!"

"I was so scared without you."

And looking at him, Gu Fan even took two big steps forward, as if about to throw himself into Gu Chen’s arms.

But Gu Chen instinctively took a step back, "...Don’t come closer."

And this made Gu Fan freeze mid-step, looking hurt, "Brother Chen... after everything we have been through?"

Gu Chen’s face twitched as he looked around the surroundings yet again.

The sprawling hidden chamber was absolutely massive, and the thick, lingering aura of spirit stones and rare medicinal herbs still permeated the cold air, but the room itself was entirely bare.

There were no heavy wooden crates, and absolutely no Emperor’s tribute in sight, and the vast space had been picked incredibly clean right down to the last speck of dust.

And standing right in the absolute center of this deeply depressing emptiness was Gu Fan, casually tossing a dagger up and down in his palm exactly as he turned around to face his older brother.

Gu Chen gritted his teeth hard, throwing the gasping Phantom Siren onto the hard stone floor as he stormed directly into the empty vault.

Gu Chen’s expression slowly darkened as his eyes swept across the empty chamber before locking onto Gu Fan.

"How..." Gu Chen looked at him wide-eyed, "...did you get here?"

Gu Fan shrugged, "I walked."

Gu Chen’s eye twitched.

"I know you walked."

"How in the heavens did you get here before me?!" Gu Chen roared furiously, his glowing silver sword trembling in his tight grasp.

Gu Fan pointed casually toward another tunnel, I was walking, then I took a turn and then I took another turn..."

"I kept walking. And before I knew it, I found this place." Gu Fan told Cu Chen, "I got lucky."

"You expect me to believe that?" Gu Chen stared at him.

"Why not?" Gu Fan blinked innocently, "I have always been lucky."

"You..." Gu Chen’s face twitched, but then another thought surfaced and his expression darkened further, "And where the hell is Gu Tian?!"

"Gu Tian?" Gu Fan blinked his green eyes in fake, highly exaggerated confusion, tapping his chin with the flat side of his dagger, "I have absolutely no idea who you are talking about."

"I saw him leave," Gu Chen’s voice dropped, "He followed your tunnel."

"Really?" Gu Fan scratched his chin thoughtfully, "I didn’t notice."

"Maybe he got lost," Gu replied cluelessly, "These caves can be confusing."

"Or maybe he met a beast."

"Or a trap."

"Or enlightenment. You never know."

Gu Chen looked at Gu Fan with narrowed eyes, "...Enlightenment?"

"You know..." Gu Fan nodded solemnly, "It is a thing where sometimes people disappear and come back stronger. It’s very inspirational. You should try it once"

’Try it? Did he just say fucking try it? Is this some whore that he could just try?’ Gu Chen’s fingers tightened around his sword hilt, his chest heaved with rage. He knew Gu Tian was a 9th Stage Spirit Realm expert who wouldn’t just die so easily.

His instincts screamed that Gu Fan was lying. But... But there was no proof. Not even a shred of it.

So he swallowed his burning anger. He needed answers, but before he could ask him anything, Gu Fan muttered.

"What happened here?" Gu Fan looked around as if seeing it for the first time.

"I was hoping you could tell me," Gu Chen frowned.

"But when I arrived, it was already empty." He pointed toward the corpse, "This old hag was the only one left."

Gu Fan simply shrugged his broad shoulders, acting completely innocent as he casually kicked the old woman’s severed head away like a soccer ball.

"And she started acting super creepy." Gu Fan whispered as to not let the old woman hear them, ""She talked about her glorious sect first. Well, I could listen to that for a while..."

"But then she started saying she wanted to eat me," Gu Fan paused, then added with a straight face, "And not the ’I will defeat you and then roast you’ kind of eat."

"The actual eat," Gu Fan said, slowly covering his chest with his hands.

"I had no choice," He shrugged, "I killed her."

Gu Chen glanced at the corpse, "You cut off her head?!"

"I had to," Gu Fan nodded seriously, "It was my reputation at stake."

"..."

Gu Chen took a slow breath. He knew Gu Fan was making up a story straight to his face, but he had absolutely zero evidence since he couldn’t sense a single storage ring on Gu Fan’s body.

’Impossible.’ His heart sank, ’Did someone arrive before me?’

’Or...’ His gaze slowly drifted back to Gu Fan who looked back at her and smiled brightly.

Gu Chen’s eye twitched. Unable to refute Gu Fan’s shameless excuses, Gu Chen diverted all of his boiling anger directly toward the captive Phantom Siren groaning on the floor.

He stepped forward and grabbed the woman by her hair, yanking her head up so forcefully that a chunk of her scalp nearly tore off.

"Where is it?!" Gu Chen snarled like a beast, pressing his blade against her soft cheek until a thin line of blood trickled down her chin, "Where did your pathetic group hide the Gu Clan’s tribute?! Tell me right now. Did you lie to me?"

"I... I don’t know!" the woman said, staring at the empty vault in absolute confusion since she knew this was the main treasury, "It was supposed to be here! I swear on my Dao heart, I have no idea where it went!"

"You dare lie to me?!" Gu Chen roared, twisting his wrist to plunge his sword directly through her left thigh, pinning her leg right to the floor.

"Aaaaggghhh!" the woman shrieked in agonizing pain, her hands frantically clawing at the cold stone as dark blood pooled beneath her leather boots.

"Tell me! Tell me now!"

"Don’t make me torture you!"

"Tell me now!"

Gu Chen constantly screamed at the woman’s face, spitting all over her as Gu Fan looked at his brother working so hard and shook his head in pity.

"All this for what? Nothing..."

"I am sorry Chen’er..."

"Your daddy is very greedy."
