"Matriarch!" A timid and nervous voice suddenly called out from behind the heavy wooden courtyard doors.

Gu Fan’s hands froze and a frown appeared on Madam Li’s face as they both slowly looked toward the courtyard gate.

"Matriarch... Matriarch, please forgive this lowly servant for interrupting!" a young maid stammered loudly, clearly terrified of angering the untouchable Madam Li, ""This servant has an urgent letter!"

Gu Fan closed his eyes annoyed while Madam Li bit her lower lip before she started laughing.

Gu Fan eyed her with an angry gaze, "You said no one would disturb us."

"I was wrong," Madam Li innocently shrugged, still chuckling.

"Your intelligence network is terrible," Gu Fan complained.

"It is just one maid," Madam Li was amused by Gu fan’s childish tantrums.

"One maid has destroyed my entire cultivation schedule," Gu Fan did not care, his little brother was already pointing straight.

Li Hua covered her mouth to stop herself from laughing, "Should I kill her?"

"Waah!" Gu Fan threw his arms, "You know I won’t ask you, and you still... Whatever... Let’s just get done with it."

Hearing him, Madam Li’s smiling face instantly twisted into an annoyed scowl, but since the maids absolutely knew better than to disturb her without an emergency, she quickly pulled her red silk gown tighter around her chest, adjusting her dress.

"Come in!" Madam Li snapped coldly.

The heavy wooden doors quickly clicked open, and a trembling young maid rushed into the courtyard, keeping her head deeply bowed.

"Seventh Young Master." As she reached near the table, the maid greeted him.

But Gu Fan just stared at her without saying anything in return.

"Did..." The maid became nervous, "Did this servant do something wrong?"

"No." Gu Fan sighed, "You merely appeared at the wrong time."

The maid looked confused, but Madam Li coughed, getting her attention, "Ignore him. Why are you here?"

The maid quickly turned her attention towards Madam Li and handed her a small, wax-sealed parchment letter.

"This urgent letter just arrived via a messenger hawk from the Li Clan estate, Matriarch," the maid whispered nervously, instantly taking three large steps backward to avoid her wrath.

Li Hua’s relaxed expression immediately changed, "The Li Clan?"

"Yes." The maid nodded.

Li Hua accepted the letter from the maid.

"You can leave," Madam Li ordered, waving her hand to send the terrified maid running out of the courtyard, closing the heavy doors tightly behind her.

Madam Li quickly broke the wax seal, her dark eyes rapidly scanning the elegant handwriting, but the absolute second she finished reading the short message, she helplessly slapped her own forehead in frustration, letting out a highly annoyed groan.

"What is it?" Gu Fan asked in amusement to her reaction, taking a casual sip of his hot spirit tea, "Did your father finally choke to death on a chicken bone?"

"I wish," Madam Li sighed heavily, tossing the letter onto the stone table, "It’s my son."

"Gu Bao?" Gu fan raised his eyebrow, "he is dead?"

"Be serious," Madam Li looked at Gu fan in annoyance, "He is returning to the clan tomorrow morning."

"Oh." Gu Fan nodded, taking another sip from the tea cup.

Li Hua frowned, "That’s all?"

"What else should I say?" Gu Fan shrugged.

"My son, who tried to poison you, is returning," Madam Li tried to point out the issue.

Gu Fan took a sip, "Technically, you poisoned me."

Madam Li’s face stiffened.

"..."

Gu Fan smiled as Madam Li looked away. For the first time since she tried to poison him in that shed, she appeared genuinely uncomfortable.

Gu Fan noticed it and he placed his cup down, "Still feeling guilty?"

Li Hua remained silent, avoiding Gu Fan’s gaze as she nervously played with the rim of her teacup.

"Gu Bao has always been impatient," Madam Li finally broke the silence, "While his temper is worse than his judgement, after Gu Wei died, every fool in the clan suddenly started looking at the remaining sons of Gu Yangtian as possible successors."

Her fingers tightened around the tea cup.

"And Gu Bao was the natural successor," Gu Fan said.

"Of course he was," Madam Li agreed,"He started gathering followers."

"Expected." Gu fan nodded.

"He bribed the elders"

"The right thing to do," Gu Fan nodded again.

"He started amassing resources,"

"Something I would do as well," Gu Fan replied, only to get glared at by Madam Li.

"Can you stop sounding impressed?"

"What did I do wrong?" Gu fan looked surprised, "I am reviewing his work."

"Gu Fan!"

"Fine!" Gu fan threw his arms, "I will stop."

Li Hua sighed, "When he tried to poison you, I had him sent to the Li Clan," Madam Li explained softly, apologetic tone sneaking into her voice, "I knew he was too reckless and stupid to do it properly, which is exactly why I actively stepped in and brought the poisoned soup to your shed myself."

Gu Fan smirked, amused by the memory since that failed poisoning attempt was the precise moment he had turned the supreme Matriarch into his personal, devoted wife.

"And I am incredibly glad you did, Mother," Gu Fan teased darkly, "Otherwise I wouldn’t have this beautiful wife serving my cock every single morning."

Madam Li’s face flushed a pink, but she eagerly nodded in agreement, "I sent him to the Li Clan to completely keep him out of trouble."

"And?" Gu Fan continued to smile.

Seeing that pleased expression of his, Madam Li felt even more guilty, "And I wanted him to gain the support of the Li Clan."

"There it is," Gu Fan slapped his thigh now that her end motive was clear, "You wanted your precious son to return with enough backing to compete for the Patriarch’s seat."

Li Hua didn’t deny it.

"At the time, yes. I planned to use my family’s massive military backing to secretly help him take over the Patriarch’s seat from Gu Yangtian."

"At the time?" Gu Fan leaned in to look Madam Li in the eye.

Madam Li also looked at his face and nodded, "Yes... At that time."

"Interesting." Gu Fan’s smile became wider.

"Don’t look so pleased," Madam Li turned her face away, not looking very pleased with that sleazy smirk of his, "I now know what I wanted more"

"Me?"

"I didn’t say that." Li Hua drank her tea.

"You didn’t need to." Gu Fan laughed and leaned back in his wooden chair.

As the courtyard became quiet, memories of his author’s knowledge actively began to surface in his mind.

He remembered exactly how he had originally designed the complicated web of Gu Yangtian’s children.

Seven sons.

One daughter.

What a completely ridiculous family. His father had truly treated reproduction like a clan expansion technique.

And then Gu fan began to process the list of his siblings in his mind.

First was the Eldest Brother, Gu Wei, and his name literally meant Might, Power and Authority.

Even his name had been chosen with the Patriarch’s seat in mind, perfectly projecting the heavy authority of the legitimate heir.

Gu Wei had been the perfect heir of the Gu Clan. He was strong. He was disciplined. He was respected by the elders. But most importantly, he possessed a rare Heaven-Grade Spiritual Root.

In the original storyline, almost everyone believed Gu Wei would eventually replace Gu Yangtian. But well, thanks to Gu Fan or to be precise his previous Earth self Li Wei, Gu Wei was completely irrelevant to the current political struggle, because he was dead.

And other than Gu Wei, the one who killed him and Gu Fan, no one knows how the Gu Clan’s successor died.

Gu Fan remembered writing the detailed funeral scene, the political chaos afterward and how madam Li used that opportunity to finally take control of the Gu clan from behind the shadows.

But his death wasn’t really important now. The dead wasn’t going to come back to life and it was time to move on to his Second brother, who was making his much awaited return to the Gu Clan.

Gu Bao was his second eldest brother. Madam Li’s biological son. And the treasure of Madam Li’s eyes as his name translated to.

His name was totally fitting to his spoiled, impatient, arrogant and stupid enough to believe every problem could be solved with poison, spirit stones or family influence.

Gu Bao was your typical arrogant, incompetent young master and Gu Chen’s punching bag bad character who believed the Patriarch’s seat was his divine birthright because Madam Li had treated him like the heavens had personally delivered a golden egg into her arms.

In the original novel, Gu Bao had been one of those classic young masters who repeatedly shouted about clan honour before doing something completely dishonourable.

"Your son is an idiot." Gu Fan glanced at Li Hua and could not help himself from saying.

Madam Li looked at Gu fan, her face remained expressionless as it was as she slowly nodded, "I know."

Gu Fan paused, "You agreed very quickly."

"I gave birth to him. I know exactly what I created," Li Hua looked annoyed.

Gu Fan nearly spat out his tea.

"Don’t laugh." Madam Li warned Gu fan.

"I am trying."

"You aren’t."

"You are right. I am really not."
