Chapter 326: Chapter 303: Gene Mixing Experiment
"His wounds..."
Shangyuan Zi looked at Xin, who had fallen to the ground. The gaping hole in his waist was horrifying, and his shoulder, severed by the Shadow Blade, was bleeding profusely.
"An ordinary person would be a lost cause, but an Ascender shouldn’t die from this. Especially not a powerful one like him."
Guan Tong hadn’t aimed for a vital point, intending to keep him alive for later interrogation.
However, based on the guy’s reaction before getting hit, he seemed prepared for the combo of Body Shifting plus a close-range Small Space attack.
When Ascenders fought, intelligence was crucial.
This guard had been present when Guan Tong assassinated the Divine Son. Even seeing it just once would have left an impression.
It was precisely because of this that he’d used the Hourglass of Time—an item whose intelligence hadn’t been leaked—to assist his attack.
Judging by the outcome, it had been absolutely necessary.
Without the additional ambush of that one-second time stop, the attack might very well have failed.
Guan Tong took some bandages and other supplies from his Storage Ring to stanch Xin’s bleeding, then used his shadows to bind him tightly.
"Are any of the other guards alive?" Shangyuan Zi asked, looking toward the stone cells.
"No. I only left this key one."
"...I’m going to check the other cells."
Shangyuan Zi was anxious to see if her birth mother was locked in one of the cells.
Guan Tong, meanwhile, opened the market on his Terminal Panel and specifically searched for two types of functional items.
One was an item that interfered with teleportation.
The other was an item that interfered with Psychic Power communication.
These two types of items prevented escape and blocked the use of things like the Communication Secret Scroll, which enabled long-distance mental reporting.
He spent tens of thousands of Sublimation Coins to buy the corresponding items and used them on the unconscious Xin.
Then, he wrapped the man in shadows and dragged him along to find Shangyuan Zi.
She was standing in front of the cell holding the Snake Servant.
The Snake Servant was prostrating itself respectfully at the cell door, as if ready to obey Shangyuan Zi’s commands at any moment.
"You didn’t know this one was here?"
Guan Tong asked curiously, noticing the surprised look on Shangyuan Zi’s face.
"I didn’t mention it in my message, but it was the one constantly banging its head against the wall. The faint vibrations reaching the ground are how I found this underground prison."
"It... was a guard from the Mizusawa Clan that I converted before," Shangyuan Zi said, clearly remembering what the Snake Servant looked like before its transformation.
What surprised her was that she remembered this Snake Servant had been eliminated by other guards before she evacuated the residence.
’Why is it still alive?’
"It’s possible the Mizusawa Clan saved it," Guan Tong guessed.
"Why would they do that? It couldn’t have been out of kindness."
"I don’t think it was out of kindness either."
With no immediate answers, the two of them left for the time being.
Before leaving, Shangyuan Zi gave it the command to "stand by," and the Snake Servant obediently lay motionless on the ground.
They continued on. Passing by the cell where Suzuki was held, Shangyuan Zi stopped short at the sight of her miserable state.
Suzuki also noticed Shangyuan Zi and Guan Tong outside, and an expression of disbelief appeared on her scarred face.
Shangyuan Zi was about to say something when she saw Guan Tong pick up a camera and seemingly start recording a video.
"What are you doing?"
"Preserving evidence of a crime," Guan Tong said. "This prison must be exposed. Let the whole world see what the so-called Divine Son and the Mizusawa Clan are doing behind the scenes."
He had gotten this camera from Wu Wang. Although he had anonymously sent the previous explosion video to official North Star departments, he had kept the camera in his Storage Ring.
It was coming in handy now.
Hadn’t North Star sent a message, asking him to prove he had a reason for assassinating the Divine Son?
Well, recording everything in this underground prison would be powerful evidence.
Just then, Suzuki shot up from inside the cell and lunged forward, gripping the wooden bars and staring at Guan Tong with a terrifying expression. "Record everything! The Divine Son is a liar! He’s an inhuman demon..."
Seeing this, Shangyuan Zi could somewhat understand Suzuki’s feelings.
When she first met the Divine Son, he had been so kind and amiable, inviting her to join the official Chosen Team to help protect the nation’s people. She, too, had been moved.
But later, when the Divine Son asked her to turn ordinary people into Snake Servants, claiming with deceptive charm that it was "letting common people contribute to the nation’s strength," the illusion shattered. She saw right through Divine Son Mizusawa Chun’s affable facade to the demonic nature beneath.
Hearing Suzuki’s words, Guan Tong lowered his camera slightly and asked, "Are you willing to be a witness?"
"As long as I can punish that demon, I’ll do anything," Suzuki said without hesitation.
"Good."
Guan Tong kicked the wooden bars apart, letting Suzuki out. He then gave her some items for healing and restoring stamina.
"Th-thank you..."
Suzuki seemed at a loss, likely not expecting Guan Tong to do that.
"Don’t mention it. As a Sheriff from Sakura Prayer who was involved in all the recent events, you’re the best witness. Your testimony against the Mizusawa Clan will have more credibility."
Suzuki nodded, then fell silent, quietly following behind the two of them.
Guan Tong recorded with the camera as they walked.
Besides the witness Suzuki, the Andai People locked in the cells were also powerful witnesses.
Guan Tong had already made a plan. He would use the Book Page Sanctuary feature of the Wordless Book to take all these people away, giving the Mizusawa Clan no chance to silence them.
When they arrived outside the cells where people were held in groups, the prisoners inside saw the three of them and began to clamor loudly.
After Shangyuan Zi went forward to speak with them, her expression turned extremely ugly, as if she had learned something utterly terrifying.
She then relayed the situation to Guan Tong.
"They... they said they were all professional scholars and researchers."
"Oh? Aren’t people like that considered national assets? Why are they locked up?"
"It’s because they disagreed with the Divine Son’s plan, with the mission the Mizusawa Clan gave them."
"Mission?"
Shangyuan Zi took a deep breath. "Gene-mixing experiments. That’s right. They said the Divine Son initiated this experiment with the goal of... of..."
Guan Tong listened in silence.
"...of mass-producing beings like the Snake Servants for the Divine Son to command," Shangyuan Zi said with difficulty.
"Can Snake Servants be created artificially?" Guan Tong asked calmly. "Isn’t that your exclusive bloodline ability?"
"They said the Divine Son can also provide similar DNA, apparently... Anyway, many people died during the experiments, and many turned into monsters. Some of the researchers couldn’t bear the guilt and refused to assist the Divine Son any longer, so they were all arrested and imprisoned here."
"They said the Divine Son isn’t killing them because he doesn’t want to waste their scientific abilities. He’s hoping they’ll ’have a change of heart’ and accept reality. But they all insist that even if they are tortured here, they will never help the Divine Son with his gene modification experiments again."
After listening, Guan Tong’s mood grew heavy. "Don’t you find it tragic that your country is ruled by a wicked clan like Mizusawa?"
"It truly is a tragedy for all of Sakura Prayer!"
Shangyuan Zi didn’t speak. Instead, Suzuki, who was behind them, chimed in, her voice filled with indignation and despair.
"This country is beyond saving! We might as well have all died under the earthquake rule, sinking into the sea along with our homeland!"
"The good shouldn’t be buried with the wicked. But since I’ve stumbled upon this, I can’t just walk away."
Shangyuan Zi’s heart stirred. "What are you planning to do?"
Guan Tong turned off the camera. "Physically eliminate the Mizusawa Clan and the others. Rip out the festering poison from this land. But to do that, I’ll definitely need the help of many of you locals."
"Shadow," Suzuki asked then. "You... you’re a North Star Person, right? Why waste time and even take risks to meddle in our affairs? What does it have to do with you whether the people here live well or not?"
"We’re all human. How could it not have anything to do with me?"
"..."
"People like Mizusawa Chun don’t just harm their own countrymen—those Andai People locked in this prison are proof. What’s his goal for mass-producing Snake Servants? For fun? No, it’s to use them as weapons and attack other countries when the opportunity arises."
"If I didn’t know, I’d have nothing to say. But now that I do, I absolutely won’t let it slide. Because I am human, and the Mizusawa Clan are demons in human skin. Failing to eliminate them will only endanger the survival of all humanity."
After hearing his words, Suzuki was stunned for a few seconds before taking a step forward. "I want to help. Can I? I know I was..."
"No problem," Guan Tong said. "It would be even better if you could get more people from the Sheriff’s department on board."
"I’ll take part in this, too."
Shangyuan Zi’s declaration took Guan Tong by surprise.
"You..."
"This plan started because of me. If I hadn’t demonstrated the ability to create Snake Servants, the Mizusawa Clan probably would have never even considered gene modification."
