"What are you doing here?"
As they got closer, Dirk Carter asked in surprise.
The woman in front of him was none other than Dahlia Hughes, whom he hadn't seen in years.
He vaguely remembered that the last time they met was at Donal Lewis's memorial service.
Though they ran into each other then, they barely exchanged a few words.
It had been many years since they last met.
Dahlia Hughes's face showed no signs of aging.
On the contrary, she looked even better than before.
Not only was her skin more radiant,
but her figure had become more curvaceous.
"After not seeing each other for so long, shouldn't your first words be to compliment how much I've changed?"
Dahlia Hughes was equally excited and teasingly asked Dirk Carter.
Dirk Carter looked her up and down.
He nodded and said, "Looks like our Leader Hughes has been living well, just like parched land being watered with dew every day."
Dahlia Hughes was no young girl.
She wasn't shy at all.
With a slight chest thrust, she said, "Isn't it all because you cultivated well back then? Even fertile land needs a skilled farmer to yield good fruits."
"Leader, don't say such things carelessly. I haven't been cultivating your small plot these years, so I can't take the credit, hahaha..."
Dahlia Hughes laughed along.
She walked up to Dirk Carter, glanced around, and lowered her voice, "If we weren't in public, I'd definitely push you down for a good session. Heard that working with you, my place has been flooding since morning; don't believe me, touch it?"
As she spoke,
Dahlia Hughes's face moved closer.
Dirk Carter could even smell her breath.
"No, wait a minute, what do you mean you'll be working with me? What's going on?"
Dirk Carter asked.
Dahlia Hughes slyly smiled and asked, "Why? Getting anxious? Veridia has always produced beauties. Haven't you met quite a few confidantes in Janton State? Afraid I'll drain you so you can't please other women, and that's why you fear me working here?"
"Answer seriously, be serious."
Dirk Carter said irritably.
Dahlia Hughes then pouted and said, "I've been transferred to Janton State for work. Strictly speaking, it's Veridia City, so we're colleagues. How do you feel about that?"
"Veridia City? Which position?"
"Minister of the Organization Department."
Dahlia Hughes stated.
Dirk Carter felt a twinge in his heart.
He took a sharp breath.
And said, "I heard a few months ago that you were supposed to be Deputy Secretary of the Pacifica City Committee. How did you end up mysteriously here as the Organization Minister? Made a mistake?"
"What mistake could I have made? If there was, it'd have been made with you."
Dahlia Hughes said playfully.
Something was off.
Still not right.
Dahlia Hughes was set to be promoted to the third-in-command.
Now she's transferred to Veridia City as the Organization Minister, it doesn't make any sense.
Without any wrongdoing, why would she be demoted?
Suddenly,
Dirk Carter had a spark of realization.
He looked incredulously at the smiling Dahlia Hughes.
And asked, "Did you come for me?"
Dahlia Hughes waved her hand and said, "There's a long story to it, let's report in first. Once we're in Veridia City, we'll find a private place to talk."
She seemed unwilling to delve into the topic.
As soon as she was done speaking, she turned away.
Dirk Carter grabbed her arm.
Seriously, he said, "Who told you? Was it Arlo? That kid is too unreliable, I'd be surprised if I don't give him a piece of my mind."
Dahlia Hughes stopped.
Looking at Dirk Carter's indignant face,
she took a deep breath.
Her expression also became serious.
She said, "It wasn't Arlo; he didn't contact me."
"Then why did you come over?"
Dirk Carter asked.
Dahlia Hughes paused before saying, "The news of Rasco Shaw's transfer to Janton State isn't only known to you. We all know. He suffered a loss at your hands before. Now that he's making a comeback, he's sure to target you. Although we have confidence in your abilities, having an extra hand here surely increases your odds of winning, doesn't it?"
"You? What do you mean by 'you'? Who else?"
Dirk Carter asked.
Dahlia Hughes smiled mysteriously.
She said, "Why? I haven't satisfied you, and you're already thinking of others? Don't be too greedy."
As she spoke,
Dahlia Hughes poked Dirk Carter on the chest.
At this moment,
Dirk Carter completely understood.
Dahlia Hughes heard about Rasco Shaw's transfer to Janton State and gave up on becoming the third-in-command, finding a way to transfer close to Dirk Carter.
Her goal was to help Dirk Carter.
For a bureau-level cadre, cross-state transfers are incredibly difficult.
Dahlia Hughes being here means she must have paid a huge price for this.
"You didn't attend my wedding."
Dirk Carter suddenly said.
Dahlia Hughes smiled and said, "I guess when you're happy, you wouldn't need me, but when you're in trouble, that's when you can't do without me."
After saying this, she turned and walked into the State Committee Headquarters.
In an instant,
An overwhelming wave of emotion surged forth.
Watching Dahlia Hughes's back,
Dirk Carter smiled.
He smiled like a child.
He quickly jogged after her.
Called out, "Minister Hughes, wait for me... why are you walking so fast..."
If only Dirk Carter was taking office,
usually, a pre-appointment conversation by the Executive Deputy Minister of the Organization Department would suffice.
But now there was also Dahlia Hughes.
Though at the same level as Dirk Carter,
she was a standing committee member of the Veridia City Municipal Committee.
In such cases, Minister Earl Carter of the Organization Department had to appear in person.
Earl Carter was a skinny and small figure.
His skin was dark.
The face appeared honest and harmless.
But upon seeing Dahlia Hughes, his eyes lit up immediately.
He was sitting at his desk,
and jumped up, trotting over to eagerly shake Dahlia Hughes's hand, holding on tightly, his eyes brightening as he said, "Comrade Dahlia Hughes, we've been looking forward to your arrival, wonderful, wonderful... Our Janton State's organizational front has gained another outstanding woman leader..."
Today Dahlia Hughes, dressed quite appropriately.
A floral blouse overlaid with a gray blazer.
Even though she was wrapped up rather tightly,
the curves of her chest were something most women couldn't compare with.
Earl Carter's eyes naturally fell there.
Dahlia Hughes was in a predicament.
She couldn't directly pull her hand away.
Seeing this, Dirk Carter moved in.
He said, "Minister Carter, hello, I'm Dirk Carter here for my appointment."
"Hmm, you wait outside for a bit. After I complete Comrade Hughes's process here, I'll call you back in."
Earl Carter directly issued a dismissal.
His intention was clear.
Chase Dirk Carter out, and next, he could have more "stories" with Dahlia Hughes.
