Originally, Alexander Camden and Lane Quincy were chatting closely together.
When they heard Dirk Carter is a public servant.
Alexander Camden became interested and asked, "Dirk, where do you work? Which department?"
Dirk Carter scratched his head and said, "Secretary Quincy, I've just been transferred to Novaria State, haven't reported yet, and am waiting for the arrangement from the higher-ups."
What Dirk Carter said was indeed the truth.
Although the position was already confirmed.
But before officially taking office, who knows if there will be any changes?
Saying this was actually a way to hide his capabilities.
Unexpectedly, Hannah Jacobson got interested.
After all, Dirk Carter was only in his early thirties, and with an accent from out of town, she thought that even if he was a civil servant, his rank wouldn't be high.
She hurriedly said, "Being a public servant is not bad. If you're lucky, you might end up as a section chief by the time you're fifty or sixty."
This sounded like praise but was actually belittlement.
Since in the officialdom, everyone knows how hard it is to stand out.
These words were also hinting to Mona that at present, it seems their Brynn Quincy is definitely more successful than Dirk Carter.
"Dirk, what do your parents do?"
One wave ended.
Another wave began.
Hannah Jacobson continued to ask.
Dirk Carter replied, "Mrs. Jacobson, my parents passed away many years ago."
"Oh, that's a pity."
Upon saying this,
Hannah Jacobson secretly rejoiced.
For someone of Alexander Camden's level, choosing a son-in-law certainly demands equal status. With Dirk Carter's parents deceased, it means there's a vast difference between the two families.
She felt a bit more at ease.
Glancing at Brynn Quincy, she hinted that he didn't need to worry, Dirk Carter is clearly not his match.
After understanding Dirk Carter's background.
Brynn Quincy instantly became complacent.
He raised his glass toward Dirk Carter and said, "Brother Dirk, about what happened on the train today, I apologize. I was just too concerned about Mona, which led to some over-the-top actions. Since we're at the same table, it's fate. If you encounter any trouble in Novaria State, give me a call, I'll help as much as I can."
"Thanks in advance, Mr. Quincy."
Dirk Carter politely raised his glass too.
Only it's not wine, but mineral water.
To prevent inflammation in his arm injury, Dirk Carter took antibiotics and couldn't drink alcohol.
Seeing this,
Brynn Quincy wasn't pleased and said, "Brother Dirk, you're a civil servant. My dad and Uncle Camden are technically your superiors. Since they're superiors, it doesn't make sense for them to drink alcohol while you drink water. Switch to wine, toast the two leaders first, and then I'll drink a few with you."
Upon hearing this,
Mona immediately got anxious.
She shouted, "Brynn Quincy, what are you doing? You know he took antibiotics and can't drink, and you still want him to toast a round. Do you want to kill him?"
"Mona, let the men handle their affairs. Let's not get involved,"
Hannah Jacobson remarked upon seeing the situation.
She also supported her son.
She thought her son's move was clever.
If Dirk Carter drank, he'd be risking his own life.
If not, it would mean disrespecting the leaders.
Either way, Dirk Carter was in a tight spot.
"Uhm… elders, I took some antibiotics today, so…"
Dirk Carter helplessly explained.
No matter what, his life was more important.
Just as he began to speak,
Brynn Quincy interrupted him, saying, "Brother Dirk, that's not cool. Look, we kindly invited you for a meal and you're putting on airs. Let's not talk about leadership; these folks are still elders, right? Isn't refusing a bit disrespectful?"
The younger generation bickering,
Alexander Camden couldn't intervene.
He could only keep chatting with Lane Quincy, pretending not to hear.
Mona, being well-mannered, was too embarrassed to directly confront Hannah Jacobson and felt anxious.
She looked to her mother, Wanda Griffin, for help.
This small detail didn't escape Hannah Jacobson's notice.
She immediately interjected, saying, "Yeah, Dirk, it was Secretary Camden and Secretary Griffin who strongly invited you. You should at least show some respect to the elders, right?"
Upon hearing this, Wanda Griffin,
could not refute Hannah Jacobson.
She simply picked up her chopsticks and continued eating as if unconcerned.
Things turned out just as expected.
Dirk Carter found himself cornered.
He gritted his teeth.
Took a sip of mineral water, then poured himself a glass of white wine.
Just as he lifted it,
Brynn Quincy burst into laughter.
He said to Dirk Carter, "Brother Dirk, I was just messing with you. If I tell you to drink, you drink. If I tell you to eat shit, would you eat it?"
In such a setting, saying things like this was obviously uncalled for.
But Brynn Quincy didn't mind; he laughed loudly.
Mona was furious.
She smacked Brynn Quincy, angrily shouting, "Brynn, what are you doing? Is this necessary?"
"Isn't it? Who the hell is he? Why should he be sitting with us? Letting him sit here is already giving him face. What, should I treat him like a king?"
Maybe it was the alcohol, or perhaps Alexander Camden's lack of response, or maybe Brynn Quincy thought Dirk Carter was a nobody who couldn't stir up trouble, his true nature was exposed—he was downright unrestrained.
As the tension rose,
Hannah Jacobson disdainfully said, "Exactly, Mona. Listen, our Brynn did this all for your good. He did say that he doesn't know where this Dirk came from, just claiming to be a civil servant. Do we just believe him? I think he has bad intentions towards you."
Indeed, like mother like son.
The mother-son duo sang in harmony, and it really looked like a theatrical act.
With his mother backing him up, Brynn Quincy became even more gleeful.
He stood up with his drink.
Walked behind Dirk Carter.
Said, "Brother Dirk, today is my big day, and I won't hold grudges. But you laid a finger on my Mona, and I can't swallow that."
After finishing those words.
He held up his glass.
Aimed it at Dirk Carter's head.
And poured the wine directly over him.
The wine soaked Dirk Carter's hair, streaming down his face and onto the floor.
Wanda Griffin was shocked upon seeing this.
She grabbed some tissues, about to get up.
Hannah Jacobson immediately pulled her back, saying, "Wanda, let the young ones roughhouse. Let's not get involved."
In this manner,
Wanda Griffin reluctantly sat back down.
Mona wanted to blow up.
But her mother's glare silenced her, leaving her helplessly stationary.
Perhaps in their eyes, it wasn't worth offending the Quincy Family over Dirk Carter.
Dirk Carter wiped his face with his hand,
stood up as well.
Said, "Secretary Camden, Secretary Quincy, it is indeed inappropriate for me to disturb your family gathering. Please take your time. I will take my leave."
Even on the edge of rage, Dirk Carter,
forced himself to hold back.
Not for any other reason, it was entirely for the sake of Alexander Camden and Mona.
