A Guide to Humanity’s Extinction
Chapter 38: Lies, B Rank Enhancement Card[Good morning, dear player "Ke Mingqing". Today is Thursday, July 5, 2026. Time remaining until the "Exterminate Superhumans" mission deadline: 176 days and 17 hours.]
With the college entrance exams over, the freshman building was no longer occupied, so Ke Mingqing still had to attend school as usual today.
He woke up early, washed up, ate breakfast on the first floor, and headed out with Xia Zili.
The weather was mediocre. A heavy rain had fallen the night before, leaving the air damp and the sky gloomy. The siblings waited a moment at the empty bus stop before boarding the school bus.
They didn't speak during the ride, nor did they even make eye contact. But just as the school bus neared their stop, Xia Zili suddenly spoke up in a low voice.
"By the way, is your girlfriend part of the super-human species?"
"Why do you care?" Ke Mingqing asked, turning his head.
Xia Zili thought for a moment. "Dad said that even if we start dating, we can't date anyone from the super-human species. They want us to find ordinary people."
Ke Mingqing rolled his eyes. If you actually listen to what that terrifying crow-man says, your life is over, he thought. He married an alien wife himself, so what right does he have to forbid us from dating the super-human species?
"Relax, my girlfriend is just an ordinary person." He sighed.
"Really?"
"Yeah, she's just a pampered young lady with a very naive personality, and she relies on me a lot." Ke Mingqing wondered to himself, Is it really a good idea to leave the task of establishing contact with the other players in Lijing entirely up to her? What if the other players scam her?
Xia Zili said nothing more. Leaning her head against the windowpane, she cast her eyes downward and quietly watched the rain-slicked road.
A short while later, the school bus arrived at their stop.
Not long after Ke Mingqing got off the bus, his best friend Jiang Qingzi rushed over and threw an arm around his shoulders. The two of them walked toward the school, shooting the breeze. Golden fallen leaves littered the ground, and the sky finally began to clear.
"What did you do yesterday afternoon?" Ke Mingqing asked, his hands shoved in his pockets.
Jiang Qingzi smiled faintly. "Nothing much. I made plans with someone to see an art exhibition."
"You left in such a hurry, I thought you were off to do something important. What's so interesting about an art exhibition?"
"I already made plans, what else could I do?" Jiang Qingzi paused. "By the way, are you really not curious about that fire?"
"Like I said, I don't care." Ke Mingqing thought, I have enough headaches as it is, stop making things more complicated. Am I, a transmigrator, supposed to run off and avenge this body's biological parents?
Jiang Qingzi glanced at his expression, as if trying to confirm whether he truly didn't care or was just acting tough.
"Alright. Well, if you ever get interested later, come ask me." He reached out and patted Ke Mingqing on the shoulder.
The two of them walked into the school with their backpacks slung over their shoulders.
Jiang Qingzi's popularity at school was in a league of its own. He was tall, rich, handsome, had excellent grades, and arrived in a luxury car every day. If this were a game, the status buffs above his head would be fully stacked. Naturally, girls threw glances his way wherever he went.
Ke Mingqing was also incredibly famous at school, though in a completely different way. People avoided him like the plague, treating him like a walking jinx. The two of them walking side-by-side drew an unusual amount of attention.
Jiang Qingzi didn't care what others thought. He laughed and joked as usual, even sharing an earbud with Ke Mingqing to listen to music.
A short while later, Ke Mingqing and Jiang Qingzi parted ways in the hallway, stepping into their respective classrooms under the morning sun.
He shoved his backpack into his desk, sat down, and turned to stare blankly at the sports field outside the window.
School had now become the only place where Ke Mingqing could feel at ease.
At home, every day felt like an eternity. He was surrounded by a bunch of freakishly powerful members of the super-human species and constantly had to rack his brain just to keep them from noticing any flaws in his act. Once his oldest brother and second sister returned home, his situation would only grow more dangerous.
The existence of "players" had already been exposed, and it wouldn't be long before it was made completely public. As a high-ranking superhero in management, Rain Crow would undoubtedly receive intel about it from others very soon.
Ke Mingqing was about to face a joint siege from his dad, oldest brother, and second sister. When that time came, a single misstep would result in him being captured and treated as a research specimen, or simply tortured to death.
I need to get stronger quickly—strong enough that even if my identity is exposed one day, I won't have to worry about dying at their hands. With this thought in mind, Ke Mingqing opened his inventory.
His gaze stopped on the "Intermediate Skill Enhancement Card," the reward he had obtained for completing the previous mission.
[Item Name: Intermediate Skill Enhancement Card]
[Item Description: This card can be used to enhance a B Rank or C Rank skill, granting it a new skill effect or strengthening its original effect.]
[Note: A player is limited to obtaining an "Intermediate Skill Enhancement Card" only once. It cannot be given to another player for use. Please choose the target of the enhancement card carefully.]
Ke Mingqing only had two skills on hand that met the usage requirements: one was the C Rank skill "Gate of Truth," and the other was the B Rank skill "Theater Puppet."
Since each player could only acquire one "Intermediate Skill Enhancement Card," its importance went without saying.
Ke Mingqing had originally planned to save it until the mid-game phase. Once his skillset was more comprehensive, he would then consider which skill to use the card on.
But from the looks of it now, he didn't have that much time left. After weighing his options for a moment, he finally pressed confirm, and a series of notification panels instantly popped up in front of him.
[Prompt: You have used the "Intermediate Skill Enhancement Card" on the B Rank skill "Theater Puppet."]
[Through this enhancement, the skill effects of "Theater Puppet" have undergone the following changes:
1. Theater Puppet no longer has an existence time limit, and it will no longer dissipate into residual smoke upon death. It can now perfectly simulate the death of a normal human being;
2. The player is permitted to create a second "Theater Puppet," but the attributes of the second puppet will only be 50% of the player's main body.
(The two Theater Puppets are respectively marked as "Puppet 01" and "Puppet 02." When a puppet is destroyed, the cooldown time will be calculated separately, and the puppet can only be created again after the cooldown has ended.)]
The effects of the enhancement card did not disappoint Ke Mingqing. He raised an eyebrow, thinking to himself:
Creating two Theater Puppets is pretty good. It'll be convenient for me to play multiple roles simultaneously later on.
Just as he was thinking this, his phone suddenly let out a ding.
Ke Mingqing checked his phone and saw a message from the group chat "Loving Family."
[Ke Linye: I'm getting home tonight. Anyone want to go out and walk around with me? It's been a while since I've been back in Lijing.]
"Nothing but lies. You clearly arrived home a long time ago," Ke Mingqing murmured, letting out a low chuckle as he recalled what he had seen last night. "Since you all want to root me out and butcher me so badly, then even if it kills me, I'll definitely play this game with you to the bitter end."
