The sky above St. Jude’s Plaza was no longer an enclosed tomb of violet glass, but the air beneath it felt heavier than lead.
A sickening, high-frequency whine hummed from the center of Hexi’s chest. The Apex Vector Catalyst was eating his biology from the inside out, burning through his cardiac tissue to supercharge his hypnotic miasma into a catastrophic biological bomb. Violet-black lightning arced violently across his skin, scorching the fabric of his torn coat into floating cinders.
Through the blinding glare of impending detonation, a dark silhouette flickered out of the ground.
Shadow emerged from the rippling darkness behind Hexi, but the cold, untouchable assassin who had stalked the shadows of the underworld was entirely gone. Her breathing was ragged, shallow gasps choking through dust and dried blood. Her mask was shattered, revealing a young, dirt-streaked face pale with raw, suffocating terror.
She looked at the crater where Zayx had been pulverized into crimson ash. She looked at the towering, twelve-foot steel colossus that was Eric, radiating kinetic shockwaves with every heavy step. She looked up at Nectron, who hung suspended in the air like a merciless, star-born deity surrounded by orbiting slabs of crushed concrete.
They were dead.
The cold, mathematical finality of it washed over her like ice water. The battle was not a stalemate. It was not a tactical setback. It was absolute, unmitigated annihilation. Every second they remained in the plaza shaved away the last millimeters of their lives.
Shadow lunged forward, throwing both arms around Hexi’s trembling, poison-scorched shoulders.
"Hexi, STOP!" Shadow screamed, her voice cracking into a desperate, sobbing wail that echoed across the open square.
Her tears spilled freely, cutting clean, pale lines through the grime and soot on her cheeks. She dug her fingers into the ruined fabric of his harness, heedless of the corrosive sparks that bit into her palms and blackened her flesh.
"It’s over! Look around you, it’s over!" she wept, tugging him backward with all the strength in her battered body. "The Master is dead! Zayx is dead! There is no plan left! There is no script!"
Hexi didn’t look at her. His eyes were wide, glassy, and completely consumed by glowing, radioactive purple veins that spider-webbed across his sclera. His jaw locked, teeth grinding together with enough manic force to splinter enamel, bloody foam bubbling past his lips.
"Let go of me, Maya..." Hexi hissed, his voice layered with the hollow, unnatural resonance of the catalyst tearing through his vocal cords. "He killed him... the mercenary killed him... I’m going to melt his eyes... I’m going to turn his lungs into soup..."
"He’s GONE, Hexi!" Shadow pleaded, her voice breaking into a ragged, helpless shriek as she clung to his arm, burying her face into his shoulder for a desperate fraction of a second. "Malik is dead! If you detonate that core, you die too! Please... please, Hexi, look at me! You’re the only one I have left!"
For a heartbeat, the memory of what they were before the war bled through the smoke.
They weren’t born monsters. They had been orphans of the same forgotten district, discarded by society, starving in the subterranean gutters until Malik Vance had extended a hand into the dark. Malik had given them names, clothes, purpose, and a home. To Shadow, the cause had been survival; but to Hexi, Malik was his god, his father, his entire reason for drawing breath.
"We can run into the deep subway lines," Shadow cried, her tears splashing onto the boiling, glowing skin of his neck. "Sniper has an extraction route. We can disappear. We can live. Isn’t that what the Master wanted for us? To survive?!"
Across the globe, the feed from Julie’s surviving lens pods relayed the raw, agonizing scene to billions of viewers. The spectacle of godlike titans had paused, replaced by the naked, weeping desperation of two broken youths clinging to each other in the ashes of their shattered world.
[Silent_Watcher: Wait... she’s crying. She’s actually begging him to live...]
[Aria_Rose: They look so young without their masks... god, what did this war do to everyone?]
[Marcus_V: They’re monsters, but... look at her. She’s just a kid trying to save her brother.]
[Hollow_Heart: This isn’t a triumphant victory. This just hurts to watch.]
Hexi’s head snapped toward her.
For one fleeting, tragic second, the violet madness in his pupils flickered, revealing the terrified, broken boy who had watched his world burn twelve years ago.
"Live?" Hexi whispered, a solitary, black tear of toxic bile rolling down his bruised cheek. "Live in a world without him? In a world where those hypocrites in capes get to stand tall and smile for the cameras while he rots in the dirt?"
The flicker vanished. The purple fire flared back into his eyes with apocalyptic fury.
"NO!"
Hexi roared with feral, unhinged strength, violently thrusting his arms outward.
The sudden kinetic burst of pressurized miasma caught Shadow square in the chest. She gasped as she was thrown backward, tumbling through the shattered gravel and crashing hard against the jagged remnants of a concrete balustrade.
"Hexi, NO!" she screamed, clawing at the dust as she tried to crawl back toward him, her broken wrist throbbing with agony.
Hexi did not look back.
"NICHOLAS!"
He charged.
Blind to all survival, deaf to the pleas of the only person who loved him, Hexi sprinted across the blood-soaked stage toward Nicholas. The Apex Vector Catalyst in his chest flared into blinding, critical luminescence. The purple miasma roiled around his limbs, coalescing into a shrieking vortex of biological death, less than a single second from detonating into an extinction-level chemical wave.
Nicholas stood his ground. His cracked ribs burned like white-hot iron in his chest, his chipped carbon blade held loose in his right hand. His lone eye narrowed, reading the trajectory of the dying boy running toward him, his thumb sliding over the mechanical trigger of his last concealed wire trap.
He didn’t hate Hexi. To Nicholas, the boy was just another tragic soul consumed by the fire of a war he never understood. But a contract was a contract, and Nicholas had a promise to keep to the two girls waiting for him at home.
Before Nicholas could pull the wire, the sky above them closed.
"Enough," a voice boomed from the heavens.
Nectron descended like a descending moon. He brought both hands down in a crushing, sweeping motion.
The gravitational field over Hexi and Shadow tightened into an absolute, suffocating perimeter. The asphalt beneath Hexi’s boots groaned, sinking three feet into the earth as twenty gravities slammed down upon his shoulders, instantly halting his charge and forcing the boy to his knees with a sickening crack of bone.
From the left flank, Walküre swooped downward, her plasma wings blazing with the heat of a solar flare. She drove the butt of her ionic spear into the ground, erecting a towering cage of golden lightning that sealed Hexi and Shadow inside an impenetrable barrier of raw energy.
From the right, Eric stepped forward, his twelve-foot kinetic steel frame casting a massive, terrifying shadow over the trapped villains. His glowing white eyes looked down at the kneeling, struggling figures with cold, merciless judgment.
Mercury flowed across the stage like a tidal wave of liquid quicksilver, his metallic blades forming an executioner’s ring around their throats.
The four titans of the Hero Association stood united, their overwhelming power locked onto the two remaining lieutenants. The golden lightning crackled, the gravity crushed the air from their lungs, and the elemental energy reached peak lethal saturation.
They were preparing to incinerate Hexi and Shadow where they knelt, erasing every trace of their existence from the earth.
Inside the plasma cage, Shadow dragged her battered body across the crushing gravity, throwing herself over Hexi’s pinned, shuddering form. She wrapped her arms around his head, shielding his neck with her own body, burying her face into his hair as she squeezed her eyes shut, weeping softly in the blinding light.
"I’m sorry, Hexi..." Shadow whispered against his ear, her voice trembling in the face of inevitable death. "I’m sorry I couldn’t save you..."
Hexi knelt in the dust beneath her, the catalyst in his chest burning through his final heartbeats, his bloodshot eyes staring helplessly through the golden bars at the impassive face of Nicholas.
The heroes raised their weapons.
The plasma flared. The gravity condensed to lethal mass. The execution was a fraction of a second away.
