I put aside the items I was given and planned to hand them to the Crafting Club. I suspected they would sell well but I remembered my promise to bring any special materials to the club. I also valued what they could make more than money at this point in time.

The sky had fully darkened by the time I made it back to home base. The streetlights lit my way for the final hurdle of the journey. I hadn’t realised it yet, but I was quite tired. I had been moving my body all day and my exhaustion had piled up. My bed and the pillow atop it were already calling to me.

I entered the main hall and to my dismay, I saw another display of the Earthlings’ cruelty. Three men in guard uniforms were at the centre of the hall. Each were performing an act of humiliation. One guard was dancing with his legs spread wide and his arms held high. His chest piece and legwear were missing, so his central body was naked. The dance involved jumping from one foot to the other. It put everything that one would want to hide on display.

Another guard was repeatedly raising and lowering his head to prostrate himself. The point at which his head lowered, there was a pile of dog poop. The guardsman was continually dipping his nose into the poop while bowing.

The last guard was licking clean a pair of boots that were caked in dirt and mud.

Overseeing all this were the members of the nightly meeting.

“What’s going on here?” I shouted.

Loftus greeted me and told me to take a seat, but I ignored his invitation and demanded an explanation. A scrawny Earthling boy stood and said, “I’m just making these men perform a little humiliation ritual. No need to raise your voice.” He grinned like a mischievous child playing a prank.

I shouted even louder. “Don’t give me that!” I didn’t know what these men had done, but I was sure it didn’t warrant stripping them of their dignity. “What do you mean by ‘making’ them? Why are you doing this?”

He scoffed and shook his head while rolling his eyes. “You really are the fun police, aren’t you? I’m using my mind-control skill to teach these uncs a lesson in respect. I think they’ll have some humility after this. It serves them right for telling me not to litter.” The Earthling laughed as the guards demeaned themselves unwillingly.

My fists clenched. They were being made to do all this simply because they scolded a person for littering? What illness did this boy have to concoct this situation? It reminded me of people who gained an inch of authority and then went wild with it. This boy had suddenly gained power over others, and it went to his head. “You insignificant rat,” I said. This circumstance had me in a rage. “Remove your mind control right now!”

“Ugh,” the Earthling boy groaned. “You are highkey a vibe killer and it’s annoying the crap out of me.”

I swiftly pulled out an acupuncture dart and threw it at the scrawny boy. It flew through the air and was on a direct course for the boy’s neck. However, Loftus caught the dart before it could strike its target. The scrawny boy only realised what happened a second after Loftus had saved him.

“What are you doing, Yarm?” asked Loftus. “Bromley here is specced fully into Soul. He doesn’t have the reflexes to dodge an attack like that. You could have hurt him.”

I stomped my foot and shouted, “That’s exactly what I wanted to do! Why wouldn’t I attack him? He’s a scumbag that gets off on degrading others.”

Loftus put a little piece of tissue over the pointy end of the dart and threw it back to me. “Don’t be like that, Yarm. These are only guards, and you heard what they did. What’s wrong with having a little fun at their expense? He’s not even hurting them.”

I caught the dart that he threw back to me. The damage to their pride clearly wasn’t being considered by Loftus. “Stop trying to play the peacemaker. You’re as much of an asswipe as this mind-controlling loser. Release the guards from the skill or we’re fighting.”

Loftus put his hand on his heart and clenched it. “You know, Yarm, I’m starting to suspect that you don’t like me.”

“I don’t!” I loudly proclaimed. “When are you finally going to get that through your thick skull?”

Bromley, the mind controller, stepped in front of Loftus and said, “If he wants to fight us then let him.” He smirked. “Let’s see you take us on, Mind investor.” A mocking expression formed on his face. He knew that I couldn’t win in a fight against multiple opponents. Certainly not with my poor choice of stat allocation.

Loftus pulled Bromley back and said, “Yarm’s just being silly. He doesn’t want to fight.”

The other members of the nightly meeting watched from the sidelines. They were largely on the side of Loftus and Bromley, but they were apathetic to the conflict. It didn’t matter to them whether the guards were here or not. They were more interested in chatting about the System with each other.

Still, I couldn’t win in a one-vs-one fight, let alone two-vs-one. Then, I wondered if the mind-control skill might inflict a status effect. I could get the guards free of their brainwashing and get them on my side. After approaching the three guards, I cast Cleanse on all of them. It cost me half of my max MP to accomplish that, but it was worth it.

The three guards stopped obeying the commands of Bromley. Each of them had an expression of boundless fury. I understood completely. I had no idea how long this humiliation ritual had been occurring, but it probably wasn’t anything less than an hour. With fists and teeth clenched, they all picked up their things and began to walk out.

“Hey, wait,” I said. After what they had just experienced, no one was capable of just letting that slide. I couldn’t believe that these hardened guards were going to brush off today’s events and leave. Were they that scared of the King’s heroes? Were their orders that strict?

Bromley laughed heartily. “They don’t have the guts to fight back. What a bunch of pussies.”

Loftus said unhappily, “Aww. I wanted that to go on for a bit longer.”

I caught up to the guards. “Where are you going? Are you just going to overlook all that?” If this was left unpunished, what limits existed for us Earthlings? I had seen almost every law broken at this point and everyone was getting off scott-free. It made me fear that even if I were to make genocide and slavery illegal, the law may just go unfollowed.

The guards all had their heads held low and their eyes were darkened by shadow. However, one guard did stop to answer me. He said, “Thank you for saving us.”

Normally, I would have replied with a ‘you’re welcome’, however instead I said, “Is that it? You’re just going to leave?” I didn’t want to believe it.

The guard nodded but before he left, he whispered, “Soon, they may have their due.” The three guards escaped into the night.

Their due? What did he mean by that? Maybe the guards did have a punishment planned after all. No, that wouldn’t make sense. If that were the case, they would have arrested Bromley right here and now, or at least called for backup to do so. From their expressions, the guards were resisting the urge to act with all their might.

The fact that the guard said ‘may’ confused me. It meant there was a possibility that Bromley would be punished, didn’t it? I wasn’t sure. Why would there only be a possibility of it happening?

“Yarm! Come over and sit down,” Loftus called out.

While still deep in thought, I mindlessly walked over and sat at the table of the nightly meeting.

“You don’t really dislike me, do you?” asked Loftus.

“A monster begged me for mercy on a mission,” said an Earthling.

“What did you do?” asked another.

“I let it go and then stabbed it in the back. It looked like it was going to cry as it took its last breath.”

Laughter ensued.

“I’ve been wanted to buy a slave but they’re so expensive.”

“Anyone know which class at the school has the cutest girls?”

“I’m about to crash out. I’m like 2 XP away from levelling up.”

“Yesterday I got mogged by a goblin with a Chad jawline.”

The meeting became background noise as I thought about what the guard said. ‘Soon, they may have their due.’

‘Soon’ meant that it would happen in the foreseeable future, however the word ‘may’ after that threw me into disarray. How could a punishment may or may not happen soon? If the guard wanted the law to reach Bromley, he knew whether he could or couldn’t make that happen, right? Where was the ‘maybe’ there? And it also wouldn’t make sense to use such a vague word like ‘soon’.

If the guard had a plan about the punishment, he would have said either the word ‘today’ or the word ‘tomorrow’. It would be illogical to leave it any longer.

Then something else struck me. Why did the guard say, ‘they’? Was he also going to punish Loftus? The person who had wronged him was solely Bromley. It made no sense to also punish Loftus or the others who were simply bystanders. The guard should have said, ‘Soon, he may have his due.’.

“Stop giving me the silent treatment, Yarm. You’re such a tsundere,” said Loftus. His voice was having trouble blending in with the background chatter of the nightly meeting.

I was still having trouble piecing everything together. ‘Soon’ implied that the specific date was unclear, ‘they’ meant a group, ‘may’ revealed there was only a possibility this would come to fruition, and ‘due’ clearly indicated punishment.

Stepping back and looking at the bigger picture, I realised I was far too focused on this specific event. The guard wasn’t just talking about Bromley. I should’ve realised it sooner. The law enforcement of this world had been inundated with crimes from we Earthlings. Thanks to the special protection of the King, heroes were granted leniency.

However, I was certain that no one expected that these heroes would commit so many crimes. It would’ve been impossible to predict. The ones with front row tickets to all these crimes were the guards. Not just the watchmen, but the entire hierarchy of the police force. Low level guards reported the crimes to their superiors who had to report it to their superiors.

It was basically well known at this point that the summoned heroes were law-unabiding citizens. Even the King himself probably knew. After all, it was his pockets that were being emptied by the people that he brought to this world.

With all that taken into consideration, the guard’s statement made more sense.

There was a discontent among the guards that had grown into a plot. They wanted us Earthlings to be properly punished for our wrongdoings. They could no longer sit by and do nothing. They had hatched a plot to end the special permissions given to heroes. Unfortunately, it seemed that this plot’s success chance was questionable.

It would be going against the King’s wishes after all.

From his initial word ‘soon’, I knew the plot wasn’t fully formed yet. If I could, I wanted to contribute to it. However, there was no way that I would be let in on the plan. An Earthling wouldn’t be included in the plot against Earthlings.

“Yarm!” Loftus shouted into my ear.

I jumped up in surprise and cupped my overwhelmed ear. “What?” I said back angrily.

“You’ve been ignoring me this whole time.” He pouted.

I narrowed my eyes. “Yeah, because I hate you. Why would I want to speak to you?”

“I just wanted to know how your day went. Did anything interesting happen?” he asked.

Too much interesting stuff happened. I wouldn’t know where to start if I explained it all. To satisfy his curiosity and placate him, I placed the small jug of milk I had received earlier on the table. I would use it as a distraction to keep Loftus occupied while I thought some more.

“Oooh, what’s this?” he asked.

“It’s chocolate breastmilk from a succubus,” I said.

Loftus stared in wonder and the silence provided me a brief moment to think again.

“What did you just say?” asked another Earthling while looking at the jug with wide eyes.

“Wait, is it chocolate-flavoured breastmilk or did it come out from a breast as chocolatey-milk?”

“You’re saying you got that from a succubus? How the hell did you manage that?”

“Was she hot? How big were her melons?”

Unfortunately, my plan had the opposite effect that I wanted. Everyone at the table was suddenly interested in the new item that I had brought forth.

“Have you had a taste yet?” someone asked.

“No,” I replied. “Why would I drink breastmilk? I’m not a baby.” I also wasn’t really a fan of chocolate-milk. I felt the two, chocolate and milk, were better kept separate.

“Oh my gosh, if you’re not gonna drink it, can I?” another said. “I’ll pay you a pretty penny, bro.”

Mildly confused, I asked, “Why do you want to drink it? Is milk from a succubus known to give you special powers or something?”

“No, it’s just erotic as hell.”

“Oh.” An unimpressed expression formed on my face. I thought for a moment that the item might be something great from all the attention it had received but no, these people were just perverts.
