A Person with Morals gets Transported to Another World [LitRPG] [Satire]
Chapter 96 – Short StoryRather than listen to the headmaster’s words, it was better for me to resort to the System’s explanation. I could probably read the System popup faster than the headmaster could tell me how worthless the items I chose were.
The next treasure I went for was a longsword with a golden sheen. When I picked it up, the old headmaster perked up a smidgen and said, “Fantastic eye, boy. That’s a legendary weapon that was wielded by the previous King of Humans. It is said that it is capable of cutting down mountains, so long as it deems the user worthy.”
I gave him an incredulous glance. This item didn’t seem all that special to me.
[The King’s Longsword: A weapon capable of cutting down mountains, so long as the user can cut them down without it.]
So I had to have the strength to do it beforehand? The weapon didn’t make me stronger or give me powers? The sword had made it into this vault through nepotism. The previous King’s power gave the sword a prestige it didn’t deserve. I suppose in a sense it was at least durable. On another note, I misjudged the old man. He did not lie to me as I thought he would. He gave me the information that he believed to be true.
I discarded the longsword and dug through the piles of treasure for something else. A dusty book was my next great find.
“Oh my! Be careful with that. That is a spellbook filled with hundreds of forbidden and dangerous spells. Don’t carry it so carelessly.” The headmaster twitched nervously while seeing me hold the object. “Please just put it down. I’m scared what might happen if you were to open the thing.”
Seeing him so skittish over a simple book did spook me a tiny bit. But the knowledge within it interested me too.
[Forbidden Grimoire: Holds 100 spells that are condemned by mankind for their profane nature.]
The old man pleaded, “Please do not pick that accursed thing as your prize. It’s a sinister object that should not be seen by mortal eyes.” His teeth clattered.
I was surprised that such a scary item was even available as a prize. Being a mage wasn’t my fancy, so I hushed the old man, “Don’t worry. I have no need for a book like this.” That was because I could read and memorise it all in a few seconds.
I flipped through the book with speed and took in all the forbidden knowledge it had to offer.
The headmaster screamed and cowered away. “What are you doing? Close that thing right now!”
It didn’t take me long to finish the book, and I lived to tell the tale. I wasn’t cursed by its heretical contents. However, I did agree that no mortal eyes should read it. The spells were all horrific and had no regard for human life. Whoever created them was surely a psychopath. One of the more gruesome spells within the book explained how to magically flay the full skin off of a human without tearing or cutting.
I tossed the book back into the treasure pile. Just by the nature of the book, I was given a greater understanding of the arcane, but it didn’t make me happy. Knowing how to cast vile magic wouldn’t do me much good.
Reading about such gory details would have normally nauseated me, but my Iron Will kept me sane and standing.
