Maria.
A sudden, deep restlessness washed over me, a heavy weight pulling at my chest with the gnawing sensation that Noah was uncomfortable wherever he was.
I tried to push the thoughts aside, telling myself it was just my overflowing emotions—that I was simply overthinking and worrying too much—but the persistent feeling refused to disappear. It clung to me, growing stronger with every passing second.
Unable to endure the overwhelming anxiety churning inside me any longer, I finally gave in.
The walls of my room suddenly felt far too confining, the silence too suffocating to bear.
Every passing second only seemed to fuel the restless unease twisting in the pit of my stomach, making it impossible for me to remain where I was.
I needed to find him.
That single thought echoed insistently in my mind as I rose to my feet.
Without wasting another moment, I walked toward the door, wrapped my fingers around the handle, and quietly slipped out of my room.
The hallway stretched out before me, silent and dimly lit.
The only sound accompanying me was the soft rhythm of my own footsteps against the polished floor as I made my way forward.
My pace was steady, though my heart beat far faster than I cared to admit.
Reaching the end of the hallway, I slowly rounded the corner of the corridor, my eyes instinctively scanning the path ahead.
The closer I drew to Vincent’s room, the tighter my chest became.
A strange knot formed in my stomach, while an invisible pressure seemed to settle heavily against my ribs.
Without thinking, I squeezed my eyes shut for the briefest moment and drew in a slow, careful breath.
Then I held it.
I wasn’t even sure why.
Perhaps I simply didn’t want to make a sound.
Perhaps I didn’t want him to know I was there.
Whatever the reason, I found myself instinctively trying to slip past his door as quietly as possible, carefully placing one foot in front of the other, determined not to attract even the slightest bit of attention.
Then...I stopped.
My entire body froze the instant I reached his door.
An unusual sound drifted faintly through the thick wooden barrier separating us.
It came in a steady, rhythmic pattern—soft enough to be muffled by the door, yet distinct enough to catch my attention immediately.
Curiosity tightened its grip on me before I could stop it.
Almost against my better judgment, I found myself taking another cautious step closer.
Then, slowly, I leaned forward and pressed my ear firmly against the cold wooden surface, straining to hear the strange rhythmic sound more clearly.
"Ah, ah, ah!" a female voice moaned loudly from inside.
"You really didn’t expect to make out with your mate the moment you found him, right?" Vincent’s recognizable voice echoed from within, sharp and smug as he spoke to the girl.
My eyes widened, and my hand flew to my mouth, clamping over my lips to stifle a gasp of utter shock.
Vincent was an absolute asshole. He had his own mate, and he was actively making out with her right behind these doors.
A wave of confusion and anger surged through me.
If he had his mate right here, why bother with forcing a marriage with me?
Was his entire goal simply to ruin me and make my life completely miserable?
"Vincent, ah... ah!" the girl screamed out again, her voice straining through the room.
"You want me to go faster?" Vincent asked, his tone laced with dark amusement.
Almost instantly, a sharp, piercing shriek burst from the girl’s throat, ringing through the air as if she had just been hit by a confusing mixture of intense pleasure and sudden pain.
"Tell me," Vincent added, his harsh, mocking laughter echoing mercilessly off the surrounding walls, "has he touched you this way?"
The sharp cruelty in his tone ignited an intense, overwhelming urge within me to barge right through that door and confront him on the spot.
Fury surged through my chest, demanding that I burst inside. My hand sprang upward, hovering mere inches from the cold handle, entirely poised to throw the door open.
Yet, right at the precipice, I forced myself to stop dead in my tracks.
A quiet wave of clarity slowly washed over the chaos raging inside my mind, silencing every frantic thought one after another until nothing remained except a single, heavy question.
"What was the point?"
The question drifted through my mind, echoing over and over until it drowned out every other thought.
It forced me to pause, making me confront the situation with a clearer head instead of allowing my emotions to take control.
What exactly would I gain by surrendering to my anger?
What good would come from raising my voice or wasting my breath arguing with him?
Why should I allow myself to be pulled into yet another pointless confrontation, one that would change absolutely nothing and leave both of us exactly where we had started?
Nothing would come of it except exhaustion.
The more I thought about it, the more ridiculous it all seemed.
A cold, almost liberating truth settled deep within me, replacing the frustration that had been threatening to consume me only moments ago.
I didn’t love Vincent, I had only seen and taken him as a friend and that no longer occupied any genuine place in my heart.
And because of that...his actions no longer had the power to hurt me. He could make whatever decisions he wanted and he could stand beside whoever he pleased.
He could choose his mate.
He could laugh, smile, or spend every waking moment with her if that was what he desired.
None of it should matter to me.
None of it was worth sacrificing my peace over.
The realization settled over me with surprising ease, lifting an invisible weight from my shoulders.
I refused to waste another second dwelling on something that no longer deserved my attention.
There were far more important matters demanding my focus.
My only priority now—my one and only concern—was finalizing our escape plan with Noah.
Everything else could wait.
Without another glance toward the door, I turned away from it completely.
My feet carried me swiftly down the hallway, my pace quickening with every passing second as I headed directly toward the room assigned to the quadruplets.
Fortunately, Vincent was completely occupied with his mate.
That meant he wouldn’t be looking for me.
More importantly, it meant I finally had something I hadn’t enjoyed in what felt like forever.
Time—uninterrupted time.
Enough time to meet Noah without constantly worrying that Vincent would suddenly appear and ruin everything.
Within only a few minutes, I reached the familiar door leading to the quadruplets’ room.
My urgency drowned out every other thought.
Without slowing down, without hesitating, and without bothering to knock first, I wrapped my fingers around the handle, pushed the door open, and strode straight inside.
The moment the door swung open, my cheeks burned bright red at the sight before me. I spun on my heel instantly, slamming my back to the room.
"Don’t you put on a shirt?" I snapped, my eyes locked firmly onto the hallway wall behind me as I refused to look.
"You were the one who barged in, Maria!" Aidan called out from inside the room, his tone dripping with playful amusement. "Tell me, do you like what you see?"
Before I could even process his words, his breath brushed against my skin. His voice vibrated directly beside my ear, unnaturally fast and far too close for comfort.
I whipped back around in surprise, my heart skipping a beat, only to find Aidan standing directly in front of me. His bare chest rose and fell just inches from my face, and a smug smirk played across his lips. I rolled my eyes, a quick wave of disgust pooling in the pit of my stomach as I stared at his teasing expression.
"No, Aidan!" I paused, letting out a heavy, sharp breath to steady my sudden racing pulse. "Now put on your shirt."
I took another deep breath, my eyes darting past his shoulders to scan every corner of the rest of the space, searching for any sign of movement. "Where is Noah?" I asked, my voice rising with impatience.
"In the bathroom," Aidan replied instantly, pointing a casual thumb toward the closed door standing across the room.
Without wasting another second or giving his answer a single second thought, I marched briskly across the floor straight toward the bathroom door. I reached out, grabbed the cool metal handle, turned it with a quick snap, and swung the door wide open.
But just as my foot hovered over the threshold, ready to step inside, a sudden, powerful force slammed violently against my back. Aidan shoved me hard, sending me stumbling straight into the room.
Before I could catch my balance, the heavy door slammed shut behind me, followed immediately by the cold, definitive click of the lock turning into place.
"What are you doing?" I cried out, my voice trembling as my heart hammered wildly against my ribs and sheer panic instantly set in.
