VINCENT.

"Speak!" I ordered again, my voice cutting through the heavy air as I glared at Alaric, practically vibrating with pure impatience.

"I’m so sorry, Alpha," he stammered out, struggling to steady his breath as he lowered his head. "I was busy overseeing the security for the Lycan Princess’s wedding preparations, so I really didn’t realize you wanted Ms. Anabel kept right by your side."

Before he could offer another pathetic excuse, I snapped. I surged forward, closing the distance between us in a single, terrifying second, and slammed my hand around the collar of his shirt, hauling him up.

"Enough with the long talk," I growled, pausing just inches from his pale face to let the threat hang in the air. "Tell me exactly what the issue is!"

Alaric swallowed hard, his eyes wide with fear as he delivered the news. "It... it has just been reported that Ms. Anabel left the territory during the early hours of dawn. Based on our estimates, she is likely already long gone from our territory’s borders...probably heading back towards her pack."

The words struck me with the force of a physical blow, stealing the air from my lungs for the briefest moment. I stared at him in stunned silence, the weight of what he had just said echoing relentlessly through my mind.

Slowly, almost absentmindedly, my fingers loosened their crushing grip on the front of his collar. One by one, they uncurled until I finally released him completely. Then, overcome by sheer annoyance, I gave him a hard shove, sending him stumbling backwards several unsteady paces before he managed to regain his balance.

How could she?

The question reverberated through my mind with increasing intensity, refusing to leave me in peace.

How could she possibly dare to part with me like this?

My jaw clenched so tightly it ached, disbelief and simmering frustration twisting together inside me.

I was her mate.

Not just any man, but her absolute, undeniable destiny—the one the bond itself had chosen for her. That truth alone should have made what I had just heard impossible to believe.

Was she truly that desperate to avoid acknowledging our mate bond?

Was running away and hiding far across the border really preferable to facing me?

The sheer absurdity of the thought became almost laughable. It churned inside me until it could no longer be contained, spilling out in the form of a sharp, bitter burst of laughter that rang coldly through the empty chamber. The sound echoed against the walls, hollow and humourless, carrying nothing but disbelief.

She actually meant it.

She hadn’t been bluffing.

That ridiculous rejection wasn’t just a threat—she had genuinely intended to walk away.

"Just you wait, Anabel," I muttered under my breath, a dark, dangerous whisper meant only for myself.

My chest rose and fell heavily as I took a deep, steadying breath, fighting down the burning rage threatening to consume my focus.

"The absolute second I am done with this wedding..." I paused, letting the bitter promise settle over my heart, "...I will personally hunt you down, drag you back here, and punish you relentlessly for ever daring to leave my sight."

I clenched my fists so tightly that my knuckles popped, the furious vow settling deep into my bones.

"Send someone to trail after her," I commanded Alaric immediately, my tone sharp and unyielding. "Ensure she gets back to her pack safely."

"Yes, Alpha!" he answered instantly, bowing his head before rushing off to carry out the order.

A sly, dark smirk slowly spread across my face as I watched him depart.

’You are mine, Anabel,’ I muttered inwardly, the obsessive thought echoing through the quiet corners of my mind. ’No matter how far you decide to run, no matter how many borders you cross, you will always carry my mark and my scent upon you and I dare anyone out there to even try to touch what belongs to me.’

With that reassuring promise locked securely in my chest, I smoothed down the heavy fabric of my ceremonial robe, adjusted my posture, and stepped outside my room.

I strode down the long, grandiose corridors, heading straight toward the wedding hall where the grand spectacle awaited.

’I always get whatever I want in the end,’ I reminded myself with absolute certainty as I approached the heavy double doors. ’Maria is no exception.’

I stepped into the hall, the atmosphere thick with anticipation. My eyes swept over the lavishly decorated space, and a chilling thought trailed right behind the first: ’And Anabel will be no exception, either.’

As I kept walking forward, the gathered crowd immediately erupted into thunderous applause, jamming their hands together in rhythmic celebration as I made my grand procession toward the altar. The power, the worship, the control—it was everything I had strived to achieve.

But just as I took another step closer to the grand altar, an agonizing, sharp pain pierced straight through the center of my chest. It felt like a blade twisting into my ribs, and my wolf surged forward in a violent fury, his voice echoing aggressively through my mind.

’She should be our mate, not her!’ he roared, thrashing wildly against the mental walls holding him back. ’Anabel is ours!’

I gritted my teeth beneath my mask, straining with every fiber of my being to force the stubborn beast back into the dark depths of my subconscious.

He didn’t get to dictate terms to me. He didn’t get to decide our fate. I would give him our true mate eventually, but today, I was going to marry Maria regardless.

Armed with that ruthless, unshakeable conviction, I finally stepped onto the altar. Yet, despite my iron resolve, my heart suddenly began thudding at an erratic, sickening pace, hammering violently against my chest like a trapped bird.

What on earth was happening to me?

What exactly was wrong with me?

I really could not phantom why my heart keeps racing Intensely?

Was this a curse?

It can’t be right?
