Chapter 174: Chapter 174: Bestial Outburst (7)
Julian Churchill walked to the bedside and sat down. His fingers were just about to touch the wound on her cheek when Genevieve Churchill suddenly opened her eyes!
Their eyes met, and an awkward silence fell between them.
Julian Churchill keenly sensed a new distance between them, as if a shallow river separated them—he on one bank, and she on the other.
"Brother? What are you doing here?" Genevieve Churchill sat up quickly. In truth, her injuries weren’t severe. She had only fainted from the overwhelming shock of seeing Logan Grant being surrounded and beaten while protecting her. Her wounds were similar to his—superficial. They looked scary, but in reality, were nothing serious.
’Brother?’ Julian Churchill frowned unconsciously. That was a new one. If he remembered correctly, Genevieve had stopped calling him brother years ago, addressing him by his name instead. He had tried to correct her numerous times, but she never budged. After a while, he grew tired of nagging and had tacitly accepted it. Hearing her call him ’Brother’ again now, he found he wasn’t quite used to it.
"I’m sorry! I didn’t know you were actually kidnapped! I thought..." For someone as cold and taciturn as Julian Churchill, apologizing was like pulling teeth. And yet, this time, he was apologizing to Genevieve.
"You thought I was lying to you again, right?" Genevieve Churchill managed a smile, but it pulled at the cut on the corner of her mouth, making it sting with pain.
Genevieve’s bluntness left Julian Churchill at a loss for words.
It didn’t seem to bother Genevieve, however, who just kept talking.
"You can’t really blame yourself. After all, I’m the one who’s lied to you so many times in the past. I guess I didn’t pay enough attention as a kid, otherwise I’d have remembered the moral of ’The Boy Who Cried Wolf’!"
Julian felt something was off. He knew Genevieve’s troublemaking ways all too well. He had always wished she would grow into a proper lady, but she was a tomboy through and through. Normally, after suffering such an ordeal, it would be unheard of for her not to be in front of him, acting pitiful, seeking comfort, and forcing him to agree to a long list of demands. But today... she was being this understanding?
"Genevieve, this was my fault. I’ll help you get revenge. I’ll make them pay for the ordeal you went through!" This was Julian Churchill’s second apology. Even he found it a little unbelievable.
"Then I’ll leave it in your hands, Brother! Just remember to land a few extra punches for me. Oh, and get some payback for Logan Grant, too. He had it way worse than I did! I feel so bad for him. He’s obviously so capable. If I hadn’t been so useless—if they hadn’t been holding a gun to my head—he wouldn’t have just stood there and taken a beating from all those guys to save me."
Genevieve Churchill had always been a person of distinct loves and hates. She always remembered the kindnesses shown to her. But by the same token, she was especially good at holding a grudge. If someone wronged her, even if she lacked the power to retaliate at that moment, she would add it to her list, waiting for the day she could pay them back with interest.
Julian Churchill’s frown deepened. ’This is the first time she’s ever wanted to get revenge for another man,’ he thought. ’Why does it feel so strange?’ He didn’t dwell on the feeling, simply nodding. As usual, he would agree to any of Genevieve’s requests as long as they weren’t too outrageous.
"And one more thing. When I get back to Veridia, could you please help me hire a top-tier combat instructor? A really, really good one. I used to think I was a pretty good fighter, but this whole incident showed me that my skills are just child’s play. Compared to a real master, I’m not even worth a second glance! I really need to train more!"
The image of Logan Grant being surrounded and beaten by a dozen burly men flashed through Genevieve Churchill’s mind, and she felt utterly, completely useless.
