Chapter 227: Chapter 227: It’s Not Over Yet (5)
The four of them suddenly picked up the pace, their strikes doubling in force. Seraphina Sterling, caught off guard for a moment, was hit in the shoulder and abdomen. Amidst the thick, rolling smoke, she couldn’t even tell how far away they were unless they attacked.
The surrounding footsteps grew more chaotic, and Seraphina Sterling could only sense that many people were passing by. Suddenly, a punch flew out from the darkness. Seraphina ducked under it and kicked her attacker squarely in the shin. A sharp CRACK echoed—a sound anyone in their line of work would recognize as a bone breaking.
After landing the kick, Seraphina Sterling intended to press her advantage. But in the next instant, she launched herself into the air, planted a foot on the wall, and used the rebound to vault far away from her original spot.
A bullet whizzed past the very spot she had just vacated.
The man with the broken leg who fired the shot couldn’t believe his eyes. ’Does this woman have eyes in the back of her head? How could she have dodged so perfectly? No, that’s not it. Even if she had eyes back there and saw me about to shoot, dodging the instant I fired would have been too late! I’m confident in how fast I am on the trigger!’
’Unless... she knew I was going to shoot before I even pulled the trigger! Dodging then might be possible! But how could she have known? This woman is just... unnatural!’
Seraphina Sterling had no time to spare for the broken-legged man’s complex thoughts. Her opponents were tightly coordinated, and they were all carrying silenced pistols. ’They’re definitely professionals! Looks like they’ve tracked me down again over that Jade Bracelet.’
Seraphina Sterling drew her own small, silver pistol. Staying on high alert, she shouted, "If you’re here for that damned bracelet, I can tell you right now, it’s not on me! I gave the Jade Bracelet to Simon! Believe it or not, I don’t have it! Knowing what a massive headache it is, only an idiot would keep it on them!"
Before Seraphina Sterling could even finish, two quick gunshots were their reply.
’So much for talking,’ Seraphina thought. ’It’s obvious they have no intention of listening to my explanation. They’re just machines carrying out orders.’
The fire was growing stronger. It was four against one; the odds were clearly against her. Seraphina Sterling took a deep breath, snatched a vase from the corridor, and suddenly hurled it.
Gunshots rang out in quick succession. Seraphina Sterling immediately sprinted in the opposite direction. The stairwell was choked with thick smoke, and flames were surging upwards. ’Going down is impossible. I’ll be cooked alive before I even get out of the building!’
Seraphina Sterling spun around and started climbing higher. The way down was blocked; the only way out was up.
But three people were already blocking the stairway above. The moment Seraphina Sterling poked her head out, bullets immediately flew her way. She was trapped. ’I can either risk taking a few hits and charge them, or I can wait for the fire to reach me... or just stay here and suffocate.’
"Come with us if you don’t want to die!" one of the men shouted, his gun aimed at the turn in the staircase. He was confident that the moment Seraphina Sterling showed her face, he would put another hole in her.
"Oh, so you were just trying to invite me over as a guest! You should have just said so," Seraphina Sterling called out sarcastically. "Making such a big scene, I thought you were here to rob me!" She pulled out the paring knife she always carried, using the reflection on the blade to pinpoint the three assassins’ positions.
"A guest?" the only woman among the three sneered. "You wish!"
"Stop stalling. Come out!" the short man, the trio’s leader, commanded. "Or don’t blame us for getting rough! Our orders are to bring you in—as long as you’re still breathing, it counts!" As the leader of the three, he was also the most cautious; Seraphina Sterling’s earlier performance forced him to be wary.
