Chapter 336: Chapter 336: Training at the Company (8)
"A waitress?"
"Someone who clears plates and washes dishes?"
"A servant?"
"How could such a beautiful woman have such a lowly background?"
The crowd buzzed with speculation, their gazes increasingly fixed on Nadia Chapman!
"I don’t think so. If she were really just a waitress, how could she have such a noble air about her? Fiona Chapman must have the wrong person, right?"
"I agree! See that diamond necklace around her neck? That’s a luxury item, definitely not something a waitress could afford!"
"That diamond necklace isn’t cheap—it costs three million! I saw it at the mall a while back and begged my mom for it for ages, but she still cruelly refused! I never thought I’d see it on someone else’s neck today! That girl must be the daughter of some wealthy family who doesn’t make many public appearances, right?"
...
Fiona Chapman’s jealousy had initially subsided as she listened to the crowd’s derisive comments about Nadia Chapman. But when she heard the dissenting voices, the smile that had yet to fully form on her face instantly froze. Her eyes locked onto the necklace hanging around Nadia’s neck. ’I don’t even have a piece of jewelry that expensive, so what right does Nadia have to wear it?’
"So that’s why you quit your job at the Stelluna Hotel—you found a sugar daddy? Is that the best you could do? Relying on your body to climb into high society and enjoy a life of luxury! I bet your patron bought you this whole outfit, didn’t he? And that necklace? Looks like your new sugar daddy treats you well, seeing how he’s willing to spend so much on you!"
Fiona Chapman’s sarcastic voice grew louder, drawing an even larger crowd.
"Still, I’d advise you to be careful. Being a mistress isn’t so easy. Since you’ve chosen to sell your body, it’s better if you stay away from events like this! If his wife happens to spot you, you’ll be lucky to get away without having your face disfigured!" As Fiona spoke, she carefully observed the crowd’s reaction.
Just as she’d expected, the moment the crowd heard that Nadia was selling herself, their admiring gazes vanished. In their place were looks of disgust and revulsion, as if she were some kind of bacteria that could give them a fatal disease with a single glance.
"Fiona, why are you still out here? It’s about to start inside!" Mr. Chapman said as he walked over. Only then did he notice his other daughter, a flash of shock in his eyes. "Nadia, what are you doing here?"
"How else would she be here? It’s obvious she latched onto some man who brought her in. On her own? Hmph! She probably couldn’t even get through the front gate! If she hadn’t hooked a rich man, how could she be wearing such an expensive necklace!" Fiona explained to Mr. Chapman, adding even more fuel to the fire.
"What a disgrace! Get out of my sight and go home, now!" Upon hearing this, Mr. Chapman, a man who valued his reputation above all else, could not tolerate Nadia’s presence.
From the moment Fiona began slinging mud, Nadia had remained silent. She hadn’t said a single word, maintaining a composed smile. But with just one sentence, her father shattered her entire facade.
"Dad, Fiona is your daughter, and so am I. I’m not asking you to treat us the same, but can’t you be just a little bit fair to me? How can you condemn me without even asking me a single question?"
A daughter of the Chapman family?
Doesn’t the Chapman family only have one daughter, Fiona? Where did another one suddenly come from? Could she be illegitimate?
"Illegitimate? You probably don’t know, but that Mr. Chapman is divorced. Fiona is the daughter of his second wife! Based on what Nadia just said, she must be the eldest daughter of the Chapman family!"
No wonder Fiona was so hostile toward this beauty. So it’s a case of warring sisters!
"What is there to ask? Don’t the facts speak for themselves? Even Mom doesn’t own jewelry that can compare to the necklace Nadia’s wearing! If she didn’t rely on a man, how could she possibly afford something so expensive?" Fiona was aggressive, refusing to back down. ’I have to get her thrown out today! I am the only young lady of the Chapman family! Nadia has no right to attend a banquet like this!’
"Go home! I, Justin Chapman, cannot afford this humiliation!" Mr. Chapman roared, showing Nadia not a shred of respect.
Strangely, even after being rejected like that, Nadia didn’t feel as hurt as she expected. Or rather, she had simply gone numb. ’Seraphina Sterling was right,’ she thought. ’In wealthy families, there are only interests, no affection! I must have had a moment of insanity, a short circuit in my brain, to ask Justin Chapman such a ridiculous question!’
Nadia composed herself and gave the father-daughter pair a faint smile. "My apologies, Mr. Chapman, but I have an invitation. And since you aren’t the host, you have no right to ask me to leave. You can attend your auction, and I’ll attend mine. Let’s just stay out of each other’s way."
Nadia turned to leave, but Justin Chapman called out to stop her.
"Stop right there! I am your father, so how do I not have the right to discipline you? You think you can find some man and I can’t control you anymore? The Chapman family has no child as disgraceful as you! Get back home, now! Don’t force my hand!" Justin Chapman’s face was grim, looking as if he might raise his hand and slap Nadia at any second.
The crowd stared in shock at the father and daughter. ’What’s going on? Is he actually going to hit her?’
But Nadia didn’t flinch at Justin Chapman’s dark expression; she was used to it. She stared stubbornly back at him, refusing to yield. "I’m not going back. Even if you hit me, I’m not going back!"
His usually obedient daughter had now defied him repeatedly. Overcome with agitation, Justin Chapman raised his arm to strike. Nadia didn’t even flinch.
But the slap never landed. It was stopped mid-air by Chester Sykes.
