Chapter 97: Chapter 97: Seraphina Versus Silly Monkey
The five of them returned at almost the same time, making it hard to tell who was first. The only thing they had in common was that none of them were red-faced or out of breath. The fifteen-kilometer mountain trail seemed to have been no challenge for them.
First event, rock climbing.
"Silly Monkey, your IQ and EQ might not be the best, but you’re still a monkey. If you lose at rock climbing to a woman—oh, no, a girl—you might as well just go die!"
"Can’t you say something nice for a change, you perverted doctor? You think I’m going to lose? When have I ever lost at rock climbing? Look at her skinny arms and legs. You think she can beat me?" Annoyed that his companion doubted him, Silly Monkey was quite upset. Rock climbing was his signature event!
Once the equipment was ready, Hughes gave the command, and the two of them started immediately!
This was real rock climbing, not some climbing wall in a gym. Rock climbing demands immense arm, grip, and leg strength. Silly Monkey wasn’t being arrogant; without sufficient arm and leg strength, it’s very difficult to complete a climb.
Silly Monkey didn’t hold back—he never knew the meaning of the word. Right from the start, he scrambled up the rock face. His movements didn’t look human at all; he really did resemble a monkey from the mountains! Before long, he had pulled ahead by a huge margin.
Seraphina, meanwhile, fell behind, but she didn’t grow anxious. She simply followed Silly Monkey, moving forward with steady, determined steps.
Rock climbing wasn’t her strong suit; in fact, it wasn’t a focus of her training. She was learning to protect herself, not to fight a war. And at Terrence Grant’s specific direction, her training had focused almost entirely on close-quarters combat and shooting.
So, falling behind at the start was something she had anticipated.
"Silly Monkey’s not bad! Looks like he’s got this round in the bag!"
"Don’t be so sure, Perverted Doctor. It’s not over yet. You never know who the winner is until the very end!"
"Stoney, I know you’re built like a rock, but is your brain made of stone, too? Even if your brain is rigid, what about your eyes? Open them and take a good look! That’s not a small lead Silly Monkey has!"
"You’re the one who needs to open their eyes, Perverted Doctor! Use those doctor’s eyes of yours and take a close look at the two of them. You really haven’t noticed?" Stoney crossed his arms. ’What a clever girl.’
"Noticed what?" The Perverted Doctor stared at the two climbers. The girl was speeding up! The distance between them was shrinking! "Hmph. Silly Monkey is almost at the top. Even if that girl’s fast, there’s no way she can catch up to the monkey!"
Stoney shook his head. "Mermaid, what do you think?"
"Her ability to learn is incredible. Even though she’s been trailing Silly Monkey this whole time, she’s actually been in the back, carefully observing his movements and techniques. She’s even following the exact path he chose to climb! It saves time and energy. This girl... she’s very impressive."
The one they called Mermaid was the only woman among the four of them. To be able to stand out at the Grant Base, a place teeming with talent, proved she possessed skills that ordinary people did not.
"No way, Mermaid, you too? Is that girl really that good?" The Perverted Doctor was still in disbelief. Even though he always complained about Silly Monkey and didn’t want to be on his team, deep down, he acknowledged the monkey’s abilities.
’That monkey’s climbing skills weren’t built in a day. No matter how amazing that girl is, there’s no way she could just watch from below, learn all of Silly Monkey’s techniques, and then beat him!’
"You have eyes. See for yourself," Mermaid said, falling silent. ’The Perverted Doctor had a point. Silly Monkey was no amateur. If rock climbing were that easy to learn, the world would be full of experts! Even if the girl was an incredibly fast learner, it would be impossible to beat him in such a short time.’
The distance between them gradually shrank. The crowd stared intently at the two figures, one in front of the other. The most shocked of all was Silly Monkey, who was already nearing the summit. He had never expected Seraphina to catch up so quickly! ’She’s almost on top of me!’
Seraphina knew, of course, that at her current pace, she would still lose. But she refused to accept a failure on her graduation exam.
