"To actually read time, and the cycle, and the spiral itself," Old Jun said, "we need to burn our own life force. Even a Heavenly Immortal could die after some billion years or so, if we used that. And you know that Heavenly Immortals are almost immortal, as long as the heavens and earth are still there."
Li Jiwen sat with that for a moment. A Heavenly Immortal, dying. Burning his own life to read the river of time. A billion years of life spent, drip by drip, to peek behind the curtain of what was and what would be. No wonder the heavenly Dao destroyed the Future and Past Temple first. Time was the Dao’s weapon, and anyone who tried to read it paid for it in years.
He looked at the old man’s face. At the deep hollows under his eyes. At the way his hand trembled, just faintly, when he set down his tea.
Li Jiwen then asked, "Fellow Taoist, who exactly was that friend who told you all these things?"
Old Jun looked, for a moment, like a much younger man, like a man remembering something that should not be remembered, because remembering it made it real again. His blue eyes, the infancy of wisdom itself, grew briefly old.
"That friend," he said, "was my brother."
Silence spread into the room.
The spiritual river between them dimmed, then vanished. The mechanical pen on the desk caught a stray beam of light from the single window and threw a thin line of reflection across the wall. Outside, the wind that did not move continued to not move.
Li Jiwen said, quietly, "I will see to it, friend. Let us exchange communication devices, and we shall talk even more later."
Old Jun nodded. "Farewell, fellow Taoist."
Li Jiwen nodded back, and disappeared out of nothing.
He appeared in another place.
He looked around. A barren mountainside. A small cave, dry, unremarkable, hidden from the eyes of the heavens by the simple virtue of being unimportant. He had used it once before, in his previous life, when he had wanted to think.
He sat.
He was bewildered entirely by what had been said in that room. He knew the old man was not lying. He could feel it with his own intuition, and his intuition, at the Dao Seeking great perfection stage, sharpened by the God Speed armor and the Dao Fruit of the Space Time Primordial Devil, was not a thing that lied to him.
But still, he felt something weird. How could an Earthly object come into this world, and from none other than the brother of Old Jun himself?
That was weird.
He thought for a sudden moment, and he considered, ’A transmigrator. Another transmigrator was here. And probably there are others. But why exactly this realm?’
That question, Li Jiwen could not answer at the moment. This world had already had deep currents for billions of years. He had only been here for a little more than ten years. That was indeed something that hurt Li Jiwen’s own self-esteem. But it was also something that had already made him learn that he was not the most powerful existence, and he was not the only one from his own realm, either.
That gave him some kind of understanding that the world of this realm, and everything in it, was indeed enshrouded in mystery. Why this world? Why was he transmigrated into this realm and none other? Why had Old Jun’s brother been transmigrated here? Why had Fang Zun, if his intuition was right, and Fang Zun was also somehow wrong in a way Li Jiwen could not yet name, why had Fang Zun been here for over a billion years, if he was also from Earth?
Li Jiwen knew that, and understood the matter. But that was a different thing entirely, a different animal than knowing what exactly to do.
A couple of hours passed. Li Jiwen did not move or say anything.
His mind was working at full speed. The speed of a mind of a Dao Seeking realm cultivator was so fast that even a hundred billion supercomputers could not reach the answer he was reaching in a couple of minutes. He ran the variables. He ran the constants. He ran every conversation, every off-hand comment, every prophecy, every "I have seen you in every vision" across a billion years.
He said, finally, "Weird. Weird indeed. The waters in this world are much deeper than I expected. It looks like it has some weird existence, or some actual advantage over other bubbles, that would make it so different or so unique that every existence from outside the world, and the actual bubble itself, wants to take it to their own, or actually control it in some way."
He thought about that.
"I don’t think that is out of the love of other life forms, or the actual world. It’s probably to use something of an actual existence. But it is indeed something to think about, especially that most worlds do not ever think of actually getting raided or getting wanted by other creatures of this realm or this actual existential threat."
Li Jiwen had never expected that he would now not just be fighting small mobs or actual agents of fate itself. He was going to face existences of the Primordial Saint realm, and he knew nothing about that.
Finally, Li Jiwen’s eyes flew into a literal light, and he thought about what he would do in the next life.
He had an answer.
In this life, he knew that he probably would never stop the calamity. But he was learning many things.
He knew that his own powers, as they stood, would not be enough. If that outer entity even sent an avatar that could use the powers of a Grand Immortal, even an existence of the Saint Immortal, then he would be absolutely unable to do anything. He would not be able to do anything in this world.
He knew that the power hunting this world was in the exact same realm as a Primordial Saint, or a Saint Immortal at the very least. To get that existence, to face that power, even his powers at the moment would not be able to make a dent, let alone stop the future calamity.
It looked like this world had some kind of quality to it that most existences from the Primordial Sea wanted to control it. But as to why, or how, and the way to stop that, he still did not know exactly.
That was the problem with worlds of cultivation, and the actual powers of a cultivator. No one could actually tell how powerful someone was until the waters of the world actually appeared. At the moment, it was getting deeper, never shallow.
He understood that probably he would never have a chance of actually stopping the calamity, even if he wanted.
In this life, his own powers, even entirely, were only that of a Grand Immortal of the middle stage. If an avatar of that entity had already shown its own powers through the heavenly Dao, then a power of the great perfection stage of the Saint Immortal realm would not be too far from the truth.
With that knowledge, Li Jiwen began to think and plan for the next life.
He knew that probably his own powers were not enough to do it in this life as well.
He understood that, in the next life, he would need powers that could surpass Grand Immortals and reach at least the late stage of the Saint Immortal realm. Even though it was not a true power realm, it could just be battle experience, or actual battle power, it had to be there.
He sat in the cave, and he planned.
