Abby and Violet (Yuri Light Novel)
Vol. 6, Chapter II — The Wife’s PrerogativeBeing back in school this year was a bit more… annoying. I’m sure there are other words I could use to describe it, but that’s all the mental bandwidth I have for that. The rest is reserved for mental preparation for what was about to come.
Abby, though, looked pumped. She had been practically buzzing when I woke up, and now that we sat at our desk, waiting for class to start, she was practically vibrating in her chair.
“Good morning, Abby! Good morning, Violet!”
“Hi there!” Abby chirped.
“Oh, Jessy! Good morning,” I said, collecting myself.
Jessy was looking at us with a huge grin, almost as bouncy as Abby was, making me expect her to say something. She simply laughed and turned around to sit with her friends.
Is this how everyone will behave from now on?
Kinda annoying, and this time the word truly fit.
“…Pfft, hehe!”
Abby, on the other hand, seemed to have no worries in that silly head of hers, but that’s to be expected of my… wife. My wife. It’s been a month, and it still doesn’t quite feel real to me.
“…Yes?” I asked, noticing some of my female classmates staring at me.
S-sorry,” one of them spoke. “We just weren’t expecting seeing you wearing a ring.”
During my thoughts about my fluffy wife and our new status, I had started fidgeting with my ring, and they noticed that, as well as Abby having a matching one, I’m sure. It was no big deal since Abby and I wear matching chokers, but I still got a bit defensive. I was also completely disarmed about how to even respond to that comment without outright saying, “Abby and I got married over the summer” in one way or another, or to say something that’d be lying by omission.
“I think it looks good on her,” Abby said. Don’t you?”
“Y-yes! Absolutely!” the girl immediately answered. “It’s just that we never saw her with any kind of jewellery before.”
“It just never was the right occasion for that,” Abby giggled as she bumped shoulders with me. “Right, babe?”
“Right,” I said, silently asking her to try and hold back just a wee bit more. I could almost see her sticking her tongue out at me though, even though she just kept on smiling at me, her big eyes glistening with happiness and mischief.
“Urgh, can you believe this?” Mathilda said as she walked in, dropping herself over her chair in a way that she’d be facing us. “Another year starting the school week with Math for the first period. Evelyn being our Math teacher is the only saving grace.”
“…”
“…What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
Because she was carrying around a motorcycling helmet, the same pink one with a white daisy that she wore when riding with Stephen.
“So, you rode Stephen to school, huh?”
“A-Abby?” we both gasped, not expecting Abby to make such a crude joke.
“Sorry! Sorry! I didn’t mean to be so crass.”
Mathilda composed herself, shifting in her chair and straightening her tie before confirming that she did get a ride from Stephen, him having offered to come pick her up yesterday.
“Huh, he did?” I hummed.
“Hehe! Lucky you!”
“C-come on!” Mathilda giggled, her face turning the same shade as her helmet. “It’s just a ride.”
The next thing I asked was where he was, finding it odd that Mathilda arrived but not him. Her smile faded a bit as she told us he was getting chewed out for having ridden his scooter to school. She was sure nothing would come of it, at least this time, as there’s no school regulation about students not being allowed to ride bikes or scooters to school. Even in my mind, that’d be a pretty dumb rule to pass, and I’m someone who gets annoyed with how noisy some of those two-wheeled contraptions can be. At most, the rule should be that they can’t just go “revving up” the engine, as Stephen says, on school grounds.
“…You two didn’t bang today, did you?”
“I take it back, Abby,” I said, turning to my wife. “Be as crass as you want with her.”
“Oh-ho! Are you sure about that?”
“Yes. Make her head explode for all I care.”
“No, please be gentle!” Mathilda jokingly pleaded. “I might have a dirty mind, but my heart is pure!”
Stephen joined up soon after. We messed with him a bit, asking if he still had ears after getting scolded.
“What can I say? They know I’m bad to the bone.”
“Oh, please,” Mathilda scoffed. “At most, you’re a rebel just for kicks.”
“What’s up with all the music references?” Mathew asked, finally arriving. He had the biggest dark circles under his eyes.
“You, on the other hand, look like a robber for a Saturday morning cartoon,” Mathilda jeered. “What happened, Cuz? Too excited about seeing Evelyn again that you couldn’t sleep?”
He told her, annoyed but with barely any energy to argue, that he was grinding an event until past four in the morning since the event ended today, and he’d be busy with school, all due to the servers being in a completely different time zone. I’d personally say “screw it” at that point, but then again, I can be just as obsessed with other things as he is with his video games.
“Speaking of grinding, I forgot to add powdered garlic to our grocery list,” Abby told me.
I saw Mathilda’s eyes flash with the opportunity to tease us more, but Evelyn—rather, Miss Maple, arrived then, telling everyone to calm down. That brought back all the worries I had before my friends started arriving and distracted me from them. Roll call was going to start.
“Aaron Sunderland.”
“Present,” he replied.
“Abigail Gard…”
I saw the previous last name of my wife die out on her lips as she frowned and put her face closer to her book, reading her new one that had now replaced it. She looked up at us and back to her book a couple of times before words found her again. My stomach had done a somersault and likely got tangled with the rest of my insides, judging by how jumbled I was feeling inside.
“You changed your last name too!?” she asked us.
“Hehe! I mean, I had to, right!” Abby said, already having a giggling fit and clinging to me.
Miss Maple looked at me for a brief moment. I think I nodded. Honestly, I’m not too sure, as I was fully tense as I braced for everyone’s reactions to the reveal that was about to come. She took a big breath and finally spoke the name out loud.
“Abigail Evergreen.”
Abby lifted her hand in the air, although no coherent words came out of her, just a high-pitched giggling as she rubbed her face all over me.
The whole class had been watching, but now, they were all wide-eyed as the realisation started setting in.
“Wait! Those are wedding rings!?” the girl who had commented on the fact that I was wearing one gasped, breaking the silence.
“Y-yeah,” I said, my voice coming out as a raspy squeak. “We… wea married over the Summer.”
Abby tugged my clothes and mumbled something that only I could understand.
“It will be our one-month anniversary this weekend,” I added as Abby had requested before realising it.
There was a lot of talking amongst them, but luckily, not as noisy as I thought it would be. What got me the most was when I glanced in Vanessa’s direction. She looked like she just had her whole world pulled from under her feet. The girl she thought she was competing with over Stephen turned out to actually be in a relationship with the classroom’s mascot instead, and they got married over the Summer? I too would be feeling like that if I were in her shoes.
But then, she noticed my glance and her face hardened before she looked away. Something told me that she wasn’t yet convinced of it. “Oh, Abby just changed her name to match mine as a ploy for extra popularity! They aren’t actually married!” or, more likely but just as idiotic, “Violet convinced Abby to change her last name to hers so she can be even more popular with the fake marriage!” Sometimes, I wish I were a bit dumber, as stupid people seem to have an easier time in life sometimes, but that particular brand of dumb? No thanks.
After that, class proceeded as normal, but after it, Abby and I got showered with attention, people congratulating us and asking questions. It was one of those times where I was very thankful for Abby being the polar opposite of me in terms of dealing with people. Even so, when the second period was starting, I was already prepared to cough my lungs out from just attempting to get up from my seat. Why must dealing with people always be this exhausting to me?
“As if I’d fake it for popularity points…” I grumbled under my breath as I noticed Vanessa glancing with a glare at me again.
“You’re looking very worn out,” Abby commented as she leaned over to get into my sight. She had a loving but slightly worried expression as she peered into my eyes from below. “Should we go home after this one?”
“…No, it’s fine. I—”
“You’re looking very worn out. Should we go home after this one?”
“…”
Abby was still smiling, but there was this very slight shift in the glow of her eyes and the warmth of her voice that told me to be very conscientious of myself before answering.
“…Yeah, let’s.”
Her smile and stare shifted again to a warm and pleased glow as she sat back straight. Others might comment and gossip, Vanessa might come up with new, even dumber theories, but you know what? I didn’t care. My wife’s opinion is more important, and after that? My well-being. I needed to retreat for the day, maybe shut myself in our bedroom with her noise-cancelling earbuds, and in nothing but my underwear, staring at the ceiling for a couple of hours as I do a mental reset.
“Abby? Thanks for taking care of me.”
“Pfft, hehe! I’m your wife, silly! Of course I’ll take care of you, especially when you don’t!”
And it’s because of stuff like this that I love her more and more each day that we go by together.
