Abby and Violet (Yuri Light Novel)

Vol.4 Rewrite, Chapter XI — The Sleepover

Things were off to a good start…

As we had agreed upon, Abby and I got to Mathilda’s place early in the morning, around nine o’clock or so. I think it’s safe to say that, while we waited at the door, we were kinda curious about her outfit choice. Judging by past experiences and her room—which I’ll talk about later, I was guessing it’d be somewhat offensive to the eyes, not because they were inappropriate, just loud.

The door was flung open for us not by our friend, but her big sister Claire, completely catching us by surprise. She immediately pounced on us, Abby being her first victim, Claire's enthusiastic greeting, which involved enthusiastically pressing Abby's face against her chest, which was... concerning. Abby's muffled gasps sounded too close to someone being smothered and further triggered my self-preservation instincts, especially when Claire's gaze snapped to me with a smile that, although possibly charming at any other time, was unnerving. If there's a single type of person who can make me immediately look for a strategic retreat, it’s people like her.

“Wait! Wai—mmph!”

She was only a bit taller than me, and I still got the same treatment as Abby. Maybe if I were a boy I’d be happy, but…

…Doesn’t my preferences put me in that same club?

I ignored that thought, attributing it to the lack of air I had just suffered.

“My! You two are looking as cute as ever!” Claire said as she fixed the position of my glasses. “I could just—mmh! Gobble you up dipped in coffee!”

The line between “joke” and “threat” was looking mighty thin to my eyes as she said that.

“Ah—Pfew!”

Abby’s sneeze made me forget the threat in from of us to look at her. Her tiny nose and big eyes were twitching and her forehead reminded me of an ocean.

“Here, blow your nose,” I told her, putting a paper tissue against her nose.

“No, don’t! Ah—Pfew!”

Had something gotten stuck in her nose when Claire hugged her? I couldn’t really see what it could be, her top had nothing that could possibly—

“Like what you see?” Claire asked, leaning forward and squeezing her chest between her arms. I had just been staring at her top—well, ok, technically at her chest, but it had barely passed a second! That was no reason to try showing me her cleavage. And my girlfriend was right there too!

“Ah-Pfew!”

Her third sneeze made me think that there could have been some dust, or…

Abby’s nose is quite sensitive…

And there was a lingering scent in the air. Claire’s perfume was tickling my nose, sweet and spicy, I can only imagine the distress my dear bloodhound was feeling. As for Abby’s refusal of my tissue? It was mint-scented.

“Claire? Is it them?” Mathilda’s voice called from within the house before she became visible, and it was just as expected.

Claire was an assault to the sense of smell while Mathilda was one for the eyes. Bright pink shirt, shorts, socks, hairband… even house flippers during the heat of summer! The only thing missing was a brass band marching and playing the pink panther theme in the background.

“Ah—Pfew!”

I grew tired of Abby’s relentless sneezing and nose-twisting, so I pulled her face into my arm crook with gentle authority. She’d still have some of the perfume on her to contend with, but hopefully, my own scent could help mask it.

She then let out a soft moan as she rubbed her face on me, her hands tight on my dress, in an attempt to replace that odour with one she was very fond off. My heart still ached a bit, but seeing her do that, a bit of a smile started creeping in.

“What’s the matter?” Mathilda asked when she got close and saw Abby.

Her sister was the one who answered, telling Mathilda that her perfume had too strong of a projection.

“Then again, I only just put it on so… anyway, Paul sends you his greetings.”

“H-he does?” Abby asked, only partially revealing her face.

“Yup, my useless boyfriend says he’s sorry for not calling, but his busy with classes and his part-time, and when he does have free time, it’s too late to be calling people, or he just wants to lie down. Seriously, what a hopeless guy.”

Her words didn’t match her actions or tone. She said that kind of stuff about him, and yet, her chest was puffed up and she had that smug smile people do when they’re bragging about something.

Is she trying to humble-brag?

I didn’t know, I just wanted her out of there so the day wouldn’t be as draining. There were at least twelve more hours to go until bedtime.

“Pfew!”

This sneeze came much less violently than the previous one, her breath tickling my armpit. I still held Abby a little closer, just in case.

“Was that a sneeze?” Mathilda asked jovially. “It sounded more like a fairy’s toot.”

“A fairy’s toot?” I asked dryly.

“Y-yeah… you know, like… Pfew!” she stammered.

Abby’s hand lightly tapped my ribs, giving me pause. Her sneezes did sound like the cutest thing possible and were a bit hard to describe, so I moved past what Mathilda said and asked if we could enter.

“Oh yeah! Come in! come in!” she chirped. “Sis, are you staying a bit longer?”

“Someone might die if I do,” she chuckled. She had no idea.

The interior of the house was cool, I’m just not sure if it was merely from the AC, or that feeling was also imparted by the deco.

It reminded me a bit of Abby’s old place, bland, sterile. More apt for a dentistry waiting room than a space for humans to live in. Just walking through it made me smell industrial disinfectant despite that smell not being actually present. At least Mathilda would be easy to find with how much she contrasted with the rest.

Her couch beckoned me, and I sighed as I crumbled on it, Abby still glued to my side, as the padding embraced us in a gentle hold.

“Pfew.”

There was something off with that last sneeze… and her shift in her hold… Very sneaky of her, were it not for me knowing Abby better than I did myself.

Another sigh escaped me, and I relented. My shoulders relaxed, a weight lifting from my forehead as Abby instinctively scooted closer, her knee finding my thigh.

The old say about women was crossing my mind. ‘Can’t live without them, can’t live with them.’ I wouldn’t be in a situation like this if not for Abby, but I also wouldn’t survive it, and many similar ones, without her. Checks and balances, I guess.

Mathilda's face suddenly loomed over mine from behind the couch, startling me from my idle thoughts.

“Have you guys eaten yet?”

“We did, but Abby might be starting to want her second breakfast.”

My girlfriend pouted at me, not appreciating what I was implying… even though it was true. We had woken up very early to tidy up our respective houses, and if I was starting to feel slightly peckish, Abby was surely hungry at that point.

“How’s the nose?” I asked, trying to touch it with a finger.

“Fine,” she quipped, trying to bite my finger off, her jaw making a snapping sound. “And I’m not a glutton!”

Far from it. Gluttons gorge themselves while she simply needed the calories. Just yesterday, during her after-meal belly rub, I could count her abs even more easily than usual… a likely consequence of our cuddling time being reduced for the past two weeks.

I gave her a smile, but she stuck her tongue out and pulled away from me, choosing to “get mad” at me.

I wouldn’t tease her further for now. We were at someone else’s house to begin with.

“All right, I brought Abby a yogurt,” Mathilda announced as she sat down. She placed on the coffee table the tray she was carrying. On it, there were two strawberry yogurts, one glass of milk and a bowl of muesli.

Mathilda handed the extra yogurt to Abby, who was already licking her lips, a blush creeping up her cheeks when she caught my smile.

“Shut up,” she mumbled, feigning annoyance.

I suppressed the urge to further mess with her and turned to Mathilda.

She was eating the muesli by itself, the yogurt and milk being left ignored.

“Don’t you mix them?” I asked.

“Nah,” she crunched. “I always eat them separate.”

Abby and I had a brief silent conversation.

Was I a magnet for the slightly eccentric? The thought crossed my mind, but then I recalled that I only stopped ironing my underwear after Abby started helping me around the house. And Abby herself... well… there was a long list of quirks I had stopped sparing a single thought about.

“We are doing homework after this, right?”

“That’s the plan, yeah.”

“Pity. I kinda wanna play a game first.”

“And what game might that be?” I asked, rolling my eyes.

“Hmm… Strip poker?”

“Homework it is.”

“What if each sock counts independently?”

“Homework,” Abby chimed in, licking from her finger the last bit of yogurt.

“Tsk. Party-poopers.”

And she was completely heart-broken about it. Poor thing, she barely could stop smiling at us.

“Aren’t you guys gonna change?” Mathilda asked. “You can go elsewhere if you don’t want me to potentially watch.”

We should, yeah. We were still in our outside clothes and this was a sleepover, a clear dress code violation.

As for where we’d be changing, the living room was fine. We had changed enough times with Mathilda right next to us in the girls’ locker room to trust her in keeping her eyes for herself.

We changed without even once looking back at her until we were done. We also didn’t question if she stole a peek once we sat back down with her, and I’m bound to act paranoid at times. That’s how much she had proven herself over the short time we’ve been friends.

However, there was nothing stopping Mathilda commenting on our clothing choices…

“That shirt, it’s Violet’s, isn’t it?” she asked Abby.

“Y-yeah… it’s nice to wear her clothes around the house…”

It was one of my looser ones, the ones she could wear without her chest making the lower belly be exposed. It was the violet one, my favourite, and as a result, hers too. “Fluffy” is a word I’d use to describe how she looked and made me feel.

As for me…

“And you Violet? Is it the shorts?”

Her perception was incredible for the most inconvenient things. Yes, they were Abby’s. Unfortunately, not her favourites as those she was wearing right now, leaving me with her second ones. All the shorts I had ended at knee-hight, so during Summer, I started wearing Abby’s shorts around the house since they now fitted me and about just covered my underwear, letting my legs breathe. I also didn’t buy some for myself because Abby couldn’t possibly wear all of them at once, so…

And Abby would have a view she enjoyed greatly. And I’d be lying if I said that it didn’t make my heart flutter to be able to wear something of hers too…

“They are comfortable,” I flushed.

Lunch was uneventful, if you count having two girls using the kitchen scales to weight their breasts and staring at me because I looked good with an apron on. My two “helpers,” if you could call them that. To be fair, they were efficient, which perhaps “earned” them the right to goof off.

Mathilda caught me by surprise with how competent she was around a knife. In retrospect, it really shouldn’t surprise me, her nanny likely didn’t stop by during the weekend to cook for her, so a girl needed to make do.

There was also that incident where Mathilda offered me something to eat from her fork.

“Apple?” she asked, offering me the slice.

My first reaction? To look at Abby. I didn’t know why I did it until she smiled at me, my face turning beet-red, and I took Mathilda’s offering, bit half, and fed Abby the other.

Why did I hesitate? It was just a slice of apple. Even Abby seemed momentarily confused by my glance before realizing my... silliness. Still, I did enjoy her subsequent “accidental” finger-nibble and impish grin.

After the lunch was to come the games Mathilda was so excited about, but between the carb-based meal as us waking up very early, we got very drowsy. Well, I did, and Abby caught it from me since we snuggled on the couch. I woke to a stuffy warmth, a weight pinning me down. Abby's legs were tangled with mine, her head heavy on my shoulder. That was the usual thing though, not explaining why I woke up feeling like that. Mathilda, on my other side, had also succumbed to slumber, her head resting against mine, that being the reason behind my slight discomfort.

“lucky you, holding a flower in each hand,” she spoke, her sexy whisper sounding nasal instead.

I was going to retort, but Abby spoke first, saying exactly what I had in mind.

“One of them is more of a weed,” she murmured, her eyes still closed.

Mathilda laughed and tapped our legs as she got up. She told us that once we fell asleep, she realised that we hadn’t discussed our sleeping arrangements. As a committed couple, she hypothesised that we’d likely prefer to sleep in our own room instead of sharing a bed with her.

“The rooms are quite soundproof, so it’s not like I’ll hear moaning and stuff,” she sneered as we got to the upper floor.

Friendship, or the tantalizing prospect of intimacy after two weeks of thwarted attempts?

It’d be quite the conundrum were it not for one thing: the fact that Mathilda always spent her nights alone in the house. Tonight, we’d sleep packed inside the same bed.

“Aww, that’s so nice of you! But, you sure?”

To prove her point, Mathilda retreated to her room, phone in hand, one of my eyebrows arched as I watched her. She blasted music from the tiny device, placed it on the floor, and closed the door. The sound vanished, only to return in full force when she reopened it.

“Pretty cool, huh?”

People with money really had nice stuff… with doors and walls like that, Abby and I could… I could sleep in without Abby waking me up when she started vacuuming.

Not that it has been something I need to worry about lately.

“…You really are putting in the effort, aren’t you?” Abby asked, her cheeks red as mine felt and an eyebrow raised.

I wanted to remind her that we were at someone else’s place and as such, that kind of intimacy was a no go, was worthless to consider, but words needn’t be spoken between us.

“…Gee, will you two stop flirting in front of me?” Mathilda laughed.

Nope, impossible. It was part of our relationship’s DNA and came as naturally as breathing to us.

And speaking of breathing… Mathilda’s room made it hard for me to breathe. I don’t want to sound mean but it looked more like the room of a little girl than one our age.

The walls were white, just like everywhere else in the house, but most of it was covered with something pink.

The floor too had a fluffy carpet that was pink.

Close to the door and to the right as you enter was her television and make-up station, something that looked like it was stollen from a fairy-tale. Following that wall, there was her four-door wardrobe with a full-length mirror door. Going around the corner of the wall, there was a desk with a window to its left, providing ample light for you to write with if you’re not a lefty like me. The curtains were double layered, a translucent pair covered by thicker ones that’d block the light. The bed, a four-post one, was then set facing the TV and between two side tables that had a lamp each. On one of them were the two single things that weren’t pink besides the monochromatic electronics: small pictures in golden frames, one of her with Mathew and Stephen, and the other containing one of her with Claire. The final wall, she reserved it for plastering movie posters that she liked. The room smelled nice, a soft sweetness that Abby told me were peaches and… a flower I believe. Roses? Yup, even the smell was pinkish. It also carried a certain warmness, but that could be it appealing to some forgotten memory.

Had she simply had the room decorated as a child and never moved past it? That didn’t feel right because some of the stuff I described was brand new. Also, her lounging clothes were the same colour, so it could only be personal choice.

What would a psychologist say about this?

It’s not that I disliked pink, I actually liked that colour. In this case however, it was just too much for me.

“Shall we start with the movie-watching?” she hummed. “…Violet?”

To rest my eyes, I had been staring at her two photos. That awakened something in Mathilda as she went to pick the one of her with the boys and sat on the bed. She asked me if I was curious about. Not particularly, no, but she looked like she wanted to tell us about it, so I relented.

The details were vague to her as it had been a long time ago, but one day, she and the boys had a huge fight while playing at the park and she run away. That picture was taken after Stephen found her, him, her cousin and her sister having looked for her everywhere. Claire took it to commemorate them making up.

“Ah-ha! I knew it!” Abby said, squeezing my hand. “That’s also when you fell in love with him, wasn’t it?”

“Fufu! You think so?”

“Yeah!”

Abby let go of me to go sit by Mathilda, their shoulders rubbing. She pointed out to our blushing friend that her posture in the picture said so. She was slightly twisting away from him while at the same time, her eyes were trying to get a glance of Stephen.

“Hehe! You might be right? What do you think Violet?”

“…Dunno. Abby is better at picking those types of cues than me on other people.”

My girlfriend’s smile changed a little as she regarded me. With her small hand outstretched, she invited me to sit with them.

I accepted her hand, not letting go of it after I was sat and Abby scooted over to me, our shoulders and hips tightly fit together.

“I see what you mean by that,” Mathilda said, sounding delighted as she observed us. “Although you’re quite perceptive yourself, even if you don’t notice it.”

Was I really? I often felt like things eluded me, obvious ones even. Abby seemed to be the exception, but even then, there were times I failed to clearly read her.

“Just now, you understood that I wanted to tell you about this so you agreed to it despite not being truly interested, didn’t you?” Mathilda told me, further driving her point. “You even carefully heard me out.”

That slyness Mathilda had… I hated it, but not in a bad way. I hated that it felt like she usually had the upper hand, but… I’ve also learned a thing or two about being sly with Abby.

“Did you two held hands on that day?”

“W-we did not!” she stammered, her face turning the same colour as her clothes and furniture. I liked seeing that colour more on her than everywhere else, but there was no way I’d ever say such thing out loud to a girl who’s not my girlfriend.

Abby and I shared a laugh, Mathilda setting down the frame back to its place and stomping away, telling us that she was going to grab some movies for us.

“You doing ok?” Abby asked me when she was sure we were alone, her fingers tracing my hair behind an ear. My face and chest felt a bit warmer as I stared into her beautiful eyes.

“Frankly, I’m feeling a bit tired already, but I can handle it.”

“That so, huh?” she hummed.

She gave a little hop on the bed and gave my cheek a peck, the spot she made contact with feeling pleasantly cool and wet.

With a charming voice she told me to stay open about saying when things were getting too much for me.

I smiled at her while leaning down. I gave the tip of her nose a little smooch while she took the chance to nibble my chin.

Once done with that intimacy, we sat quietly there, taking in the atmosphere. I was wondering if the smell of peaches was making Abby hungry but didn’t get to ask her about it because Mathilda came back carrying a collection of movies for us to watch from the comfort of her bed until dinner time.

“By the way,” she said, interrupting herself. “You girls didn’t snoop around while I was out, did you?”

“Nope.”

“Good, good. I’d like you to not touch the bedside drawer on the side you’re sitting. That’s where I keep my… toys.”

Abby scoffed and, while maintaining eye contact with Mathilda, opened the drawer she had mentioned before rummaging through it. Out of it, she could only produce a pair of socks.

…More pink stuff…

“As if a girl like you, who blushes at the mention of holding hands with her crush, would have stuff like that,” Abby sneered while I found myself nodding.

“I still could have some of that stuff!” Mathilda protested. Why even argue about that?

“Oh yeah? Can you tell me how to use one then?”

Mathilda became a stammering mess, her face beyond red. It was a bit much, but with how much Mathilda had been focusing on me, I had the feeling Abby was getting payback.

“Honey, behave,” I told Abby, giving light taps to her leg.

She stuck her tongue out to me and bobbed side to side with a smug smile. What a cheeky girl she could be…

Mathilda came to the bed huffing and puffing, accusing Abby of not playing fair… like she was one to talk. With theatrical moves, she got her legs under the sheets and back resting on the headboard with a pillow and asked if we weren’t going to join. The problem was, there was only one pillow left in the room. Well, I say that was a problem but it really wasn’t. We’d just have to sit like we always did… the problem was doing that in front of Mathilda and not default to some shows of intimacy that came naturally when Abby sat between my legs with her back on my chest and hair close to my nose.

“…Hello? Aren’t you joining me?” Mathilda insisted. “I know there’s only one pillow, but can’t just Abby use you Violet as her back rest?”

Despite all her teasing, this time, she was making a legitimate suggestion.

My shoulders slacked a bit, and I joined her in sitting under the sheet, Abby following after and gently reclining against me. It was strange, the room wasn’t that warm just a second ago.

Would it be ok if I set my arms around her waist?

Well, Abby was my girlfriend… plus, she’d likely cross her arms over mine. That should prevent possible overt shows of affection. It did not.

Midway through the first movie, I felt Abby’s hair lightly tickling my nose. One of us or maybe even the two had unconsciously moved our heads and my cheekbone now rested on her crown. That bit of self-awareness also made me realise how I had shifted the position of my hand, it now gently caressing Abby’s arm. Abby too was running her thumb on the back of my hand. Such simple gestures that I tried convincing myself were so downplayed it’d go under Mathilda’s radar, but there it was, a silent, observant smile.

During the second movie, there was a slightly scary scene. Abby squeezed my hand then while I instinctively held her closer.

On the third one, Abby shifted her head to look at me with a pleased smile. I think I might have given her a little squeeze.

“Shall I order some pizza?” Mathilda mused, bobbing side to side. “A sleepover isn’t a sleepover without some.”

“Fine by me.”

My voice came as a low rumble, Abby giving me one of her looks. I patted her head, her expression softening up.

I was quite spent from being so self-conscious.

“You girls wanna add extra toppings,” Mathilda asked, already on the phone with the pizzeria.

I requested extra cheese and maybe garlic if she and Abby were ok with it. Then, I requested for Mathilda to check with them if the pizza she was ordering didn’t have bell peppers.

“So? What do you wanna do now?” she chirped, leaning closer to us.

She was strangely peppy. More than what I thought she’d get just from watching Abby and I being close. I suspected she had something up her sleeve, and if movies were what to go by... love talk?

She won’t be as neurotic as last time we were here... will she?

I shuddered at that thought, my mind telling me that she was too much in a good mood for that to be the case.

“I for one need to use the bathroom,” Abby said, squirming a bit.

She hopped off, her steps short and quick. I get that the movies were interesting, but she really shouldn’t hold it in. And look who’s talking, because I didn’t to interrupt the flow—and most importantly, dislodge my girlfriend, I was also in the need to pee, even though I was pacing my water intake the whole time.

“Ah! Before I forget, I found some information about Vanessa!”

“I’m sorry, who?”

“…Vanessa? From our class?”

Did we really have someone with that name in our classroom? A stupid question because Mathilda wouldn’t be saying we had a classmate named such if that wasn’t the case, but I couldn’t for the life of me remember.

“The girl you bumped into on our first day back to school?”

“Hmm… I do kinda recall bumping into someone, yes, but… was that the ‘Vanessa’ you wanted to talk about?”

“Humph, never mind then,” Mathilda chuckled, shrugging her shoulders.

Abby came back in that moment and looking lighter, so I got out of the bed. That’s when I realised that my butt had gone numb from the position I was sat at.

Walking by Abby, I noticed her smirk and eyebrow raise.

“Don’t you dare,” I hissed, my walk weird.

She giggled and sat on the bed, leaving me undisturbed. When I came back, she still sat there, invitingly waiting for me. By the way they were acting, I had the feeling they had been talking about me. Maybe it was about that Vanessa girl and the fact I couldn’t remember who she was? Hopefully, Abby explained Mathilda that I don’t really memorise people’s names and faces until I’ve warmed up to them or because memorising such things were at least temporarily important.

I sat back down, waiting for Abby to take her rightful place. She chose to lay her head on my lap. I shifted my position so I wouldn’t grow numb again.

“Lucky you,” Mathilda said. “I’d love a lap pillow too from such lovely legs.”

I looked at Abby. She was quietly looking up to my face, a calm smile adorning her peaceful face.

“...Come on,” I said, tapping the free space of my thighs that Abby wasn’t occupying.

Mathilda didn’t seem to believe me, but she also knew me well enough to see I wasn’t joking.

With an eager reluctance, she rested her head by Abby, her wavy hair tickling the skin of my knees. Now I had Abby’s head the closes to my stomach and her body stretched to the right and Mathilda resting her head closer to my knees and body stretched to the left. As usual, I was finding myself in the role of caregiver and wondering how I got there despite knowing very well the answer.

I looked back at Abby. Her smile had grown a bit more and her eyes were like if she had just fallen asleep.

Looking back at Mathilda’s face, she was looking pensive. Her lips were trembling a bit like she'd start crying or was barely holding words in.

“You know,” she began with a husky voice. “I’m aware that we’ve only been friends for a few months, but... you two are my female best friends.”

That revelation was a kick to the head. We were? Us? What about all the other girls she’s friends with?

Then it clicked and it became quite obvious. She talked to a lot of girls and did hangout with them, after all, Mathilda was a popular girl. However, there were plenty of signs that she wasn’t particularly close to any of them. What she told us when we first met for a playdate at the cinema, the fact that she’d leave a group she was with to come to me and Abby at school, the fact other girls kept their distance that day she had her fit... those weren’t friends, they were acquaintances. In us, she found company that resonated with her. And we accepted her, warts and all.

“Sorry, this must be quite sudden, isn’t it?” she said, snorting and wiping a tear. “I was planning to tell you girls about this once we settled to sleep, but... I got a bit emotional all of a sudden.”

Her show of vulnerability reminded me of the time Abby was surprised that I told her that I saw her as a friend and then jokingly asked if I’d ever call her my best friend. Back then, I only managed to mumble under my breath that she was my only friend, so she already was by default. Abby called my name then, and I couldn’t be sure if she had heard me or not. Now, I knew Abby did hear me, but I didn’t want to leave feelings left so muddled ever again.

“...We also see you as our best friend.”

Despite still sounding shaky, I said it loud and clear enough to leave no doubts.

Mathilda looked at me, her face awash with surprise. Her eyes started to swell with tears and she excused herself to go to the toilet, leaving me and Abby alone, the scent of the room now feeling sickeningly sweet.

I felt the hand I had by my side be tenderly squeezed. Abby was now with her eyes open and on me, glistening as she smiled.

“You really don’t play fair sometimes,” she purred.

“...”

I entangled our fingers, my ability to form sentences apparently gone.

Mathilda got on my nerves sometimes, and it was a bit exhausting dealing with her but... she was a precious friend. And I was thankful for that.
