Abby and Violet (Yuri Light Novel)

Vol.6, Chapter IX — Projectors and Protests

The weekend wasn’t going according to plan after all, with how Violet was feeling.

Friday was a lost day, Saturday was a similar case with homework and how much Violet ended up in bed, sleeping and resting when we weren’t doing chores together. I managed to do a lot of them by myself, but it was a wasted day nonetheless, as there had been homework that needed doing.

Sunday, that being today, Violet was a lot better. Still a bit wobbly, but she assured me it was due to how much she slept.

Just like Friday, I woke up alone, but this time it wasn’t to find her frightful figure sharpening knives. Instead, I found her preparing breakfast she had planned to bring to me in bed as a thank you for all the care I gave her and the work I did. We did return to bed for that, but we really couldn’t just stay there for that long. Mathilda had called us late at night after she finished her stream, wanting us to meet on Sunday morning to help her plan her next steps with Stephen and help with homework before the next stream. We agreed to it since Violet was feeling better by the time she had called, and she was done with being shut inside, being miserable.

We hadn’t planned for it being this hot outside so early in the morning, however, as if the heat had been trapped in the building walls and hadn’t been expelled completely during the night. It was the wet kind of heat too, making walking down the streets feel like a sauna.

“Urgh! I can’t wait for winter to come,” Violet huffed, adjusting her glasses once again, the sweat making them hard to stay in place. “I’m all soggy and sticky.”

“There really isn’t anything worse than soggy underwear, is there?” I chuckled as I fanned her with my free hand.

“Damn it, Abby, I wasn’t talking about that,” she huffed as she grabbed the hem of her skirt and began fanning it, trying to get some air to move around under it. “Now it’s all I can notice. Eww!”

I was apologising to her as I reached for the doorbell of Mathilda’s place. I was just about to touch it when the door flung open. It wasn’t Mathilda who opened it; it wasn’t her sister who opened it; it was Stephen.

“Oh, erm, hi girls,” he panted.

“Hi,” we greeted back.

His hair was a bit messy, and so were his clothes, as if he tossed them over his body in a hurry. He had a certain glow Violet and I were very familiar with around him, one that we’ve seen on each other and in the mirror countless times.

Then came her voice, hurried and nervous, asking him to get a move on before Violet and I arrived. Then…

“Ah! They are here!” she gasped as she saw us. She was midway through smoothing out her clothes, her hair still a bit messy.

“Oh my!” I snickered.

I was dying to tease them to hell and back, but Violet pulled me closer to her, silently telling me to behave.

Stephen cleared his throat and told Mathilda he’d call her later, after her stream, and then bid us farewell before darting past us, red like I’ve never seen him.

Now that it was just us girls, I couldn’t hold back another second.

“Are we even needed here?” I asked, feeling my smile twitching. “Looks like you’ve figured everything out already.”

“Abby, hush!” Violet hissed, giving my hand a small squeeze.

Mathilda, who had been pink from head to toe before, was now red, her mouth opening and closing like a fish while her arms flailed on her sides as if she were trying to take off. She was being way too funny for me not to mess with her.

“I’m sorry, Mathilda, but could we come in?” Violet asked, her voice coming out a bit gravely. “I think I might pass out if I don’t cool off and manage to hydrate.”

“O-of course!” Mathilda told her, regaining some of her footing. “Come in! Come in! I’ll bring you some cool water from the fridge while you two sit on the couch.”

Those were magic words for my wifey as her body slacked once she heard them. We got inside, and Violet dropped herself on the couch. It was clear to me that she still needed some more rest, or at least for the weather not to be so cruel. That was made even more obvious by how she chose to sit. Slumped, with her legs open that she moved in a partial open and close sway, fanning her skirt with her hands. I could almost see her soul leave her body when she sighed as she rolled her head back against the backrest. Once Mathilda returned with the promised water, though, Violet corrected her posture and mannerisms.

Mathilda sat across from us, knees rubbing together, her hands entangled with one another as she twisted them on her lap, and a victorious smile that showed us that she wanted to tell us everything, but didn’t know how to begin. It was the happiest we’ve ever seen her.

“So, looks like you two went the whole way this time,” I began, so she could have a starting point.

“Y-yeah…” she giggled. “It was… nice. It hurt a bit, but…”

“How did that even happen?” Violet asked. One look, and I could tell that she was more worried about Mathilda letting slip up some sordid detail she wasn’t interested in hearing. With Mathilda being Claire’s sister, I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened.

She told us the story as if she were recounting a wonderful dream.

After she finished her stream, she gave us the call that had brought us here. Then, as was her usual, she sat to watch a movie to relax while having her dinner. However, her projector wasn’t working again. She texted Stephen about it, and to her surprise, he popped over right away to fix it for her. She invited him to stay and watch the movie with her, which somehow led to them starting to kiss, and before she even knew it, they were together in her bed.

“I really get it now,” she told us. “That thing you say about you not having sex, but making love instead. It’s… It’s a really special feeling, isn’t it?”

I giggled in agreement while Violet blushed and shifted in her seat, her posture getting more proper out of embarrassment.

A silence settled in, Mathilda thinking about the night she had, Violet trying to figure out what other subject we could talk about, and me wondering what I could say next just to rile up our friend.

“Hey, is it even safe for me and Violet to be sitting on this couch?” I asked, deciding to go with that.

Violet’s neck snapped towards me, first to scold me, but then my question settled in her mind, and she snapped her neck towards Mathilda, asking her silently if we were safe sitting on the couch.

“I-I told you, we did it in my bed!” Mathilda cried out, being completely red. “And we used protection too, so there’d be no way for you two to be at risk of anything!”

“Mathilda, please!” Violet cried out next, while I laughed like a madwoman. “And you, Abby, behave yourself, or I’ll have you sleeping on the couch tonight!”

I kept on laughing while the two of them matched in colour and glared at me.

“Anyway, congrats on finally progressing in your relationship with him,” I panted once I got my laughter under control.

“It still doesn’t feel real, you know?” she hummed as she held her face with both hands. “I feel like I’ll wake up any second now and be back to square one.”

“Oh, don’t worry about it,” I chuckled. “Violet and I have been together all this time and still get that feeling from time to time, don’t we, babe?”

“Yeah,” she said, still giving me a look telling me to behave. “Anyway, looks like the reason why we came here was mostly void.”

“Not at all!” Mathilda declared. “I need your advice now more than ever! Like, what should I do now? Should I text him a thank you for the night? We did chat about it after we… you know, but maybe I should tell him again how it felt to me? Or—”

“I’m stopping you right there,” Violet told her, raising a hand. “Whatever it is you want to tell him about tonight is between you and him, and only you can decide on what you want to tell him or not.”

“R-right… Sorry for oversharing,” Mathilda nodded. “But you two don’t think I’d be too clingy or weird for texting him about it, do you?”

Violet and I shared a look before giving her our opinion that it should be perfectly fine if she did. We were forgetting a bit that they weren’t like us, who have been hip-to-hip from very early on in our relationship, before we even were a couple. Our lives have been deeply intertwined with one another, while theirs were yet to reach that point.

Still, good for her to have had such a sweet progression in her relationship with Stephen.

Unlike Violet and me, they had the more traditional progression. Although we hadn’t heard any story about one of them confessing, it really wasn’t a necessary step since they so clearly were on the same page about their relationship. Violet and I too had been like that, but due to our awkwardness and Violet’s tendency to stick to the rules, it resulted in a mishmash of the typical steps, all in a single night. Actually, twice, if I count the night we became engaged.

“Hmm? Why are you two looking at me like that?” I asked once I realised they were staring at me when the silence got too loud to ignore. “I didn’t do or say anything this time,” I told them before quickly realising the words I used. And what I just said is no admission of guilt about anything you might have accused me of doing before, I quickly added.

“No, erm, we were just asking if we can start helping Mathilda with her homework, or if you have anything else to say,” Violet clarified.

“Oh! Nope, other than ‘congrats’ and that she shouldn’t grow complacent now that they are dating, I have nothing else to say,” I chirped. “Never mind what I just said before that.”

“…Right,” Violet hummed, giving me a suspicious look.

I did do something, though, now that I was thinking about it. I had moved a pair of my favourite socks into our underwear drawer just to mess with her since she was the last one doing that chore. My plan was to ask her where she put them, only to have her second-guess herself once she found them in the wrong place. I had done this before our periods started, so it was a “cruelty-free” little prank.

Mathilda chuckled and promised me she wouldn’t and that she trusted us to let her know if she did, regardless of whether or not she tried. She then got up and went to pick up her schoolbooks while Violet and I stayed seated.

“…What?” Violet asked once my stare became too much to ignore.

“Love you to bits,” I chirped.

“…I love you too, Mrs Abbigail Evergreen,” she said back to me, her voice coming in an embarrassed hush.

I giggled as I fluffed myself against her, Violet grumbling that I was being impossible today while also pulling me closer.
