Chapter 18: 18.A connection to begin our story- 3

A comfortable silence settled over them once more.

This time, neither of them felt the need to rush and fill it.

The wind gently brushed past the trees, carrying a few fallen leaves across the narrow path before disappearing into the taller grass surrounding the bench.

Reina found herself quietly watching the campus beyond the trees.

Students were slowly making their way towards the main gate, chatting among themselves after what had been an uneventful first day.

"...It’s getting late."

She was the first to speak.

Mylo followed her gaze before looking up at the sky.

The orange hue had begun giving way to the softer colours of dusk.

"...Yeah."

He let out a slow breath.

"I didn’t realize we’d been sitting here this long."

Neither had she. Somehow...

Time had passed without either of them noticing.

For someone who had spent most of her life struggling to keep conversations alive...

It felt... strange.

Nice.

"...I should probably head back."

She adjusted the strap of her bag before standing up.

Mylo nodded before standing as well.

"I should get going too."

"Yeah, we shouldn’t stay for too long."

They dusted the grass from their clothes almost at the same time before awkwardly finding themselves standing face to face.

Neither moved.

Neither seemed particularly good at saying goodbye.

Mylo was the first to smile.

"So, I guess...We’re friends now?"

Reina looked at him. The word lingered in her mind.

Friends...’

Another imaginary manga panel flashed through her thoughts.

Two characters stood beneath a sunset.

Instead of confessing...

The speech bubble simply read-

"Let’s be friends."

The comments beneath the Chapter would probably be filled with readers complaining.

"Why didn’t they just become a couple already?"

Reina almost smiled.

’Because...Maybe they weren’t ready yet.’

’Neither are we.’

"...Yeah."

A small smile spread across her face.

"We’re friends."

Somehow...Saying those words didn’t hurt as much as she thought it would.

In fact...They felt comforting.

Friendship wasn’t the ending she had imagined.

But perhaps...

It was a much better place to begin.

Mylo extended his hand towards her.

"Then...

"I’m looking forward to getting to know you properly this time."

Reina looked at his outstretched hand.

Unlike before...

There was no desperation.

No fear.

No misunderstanding.

Just a simple gesture between two people who had decided to take a step forward together.

She smiled before placing her hand in his.

"...Me too."

Their handshake lasted only a moment.

But it somehow felt far more meaningful than anything else that had happened between them that day.

As they let go, Mylo spoke again.

"Oh.

"I almost forgot."

"Hm?"

"When you decide what manga I should start with..."

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"...Go easy on a beginner."

A quiet laugh escaped Reina.

"I’ll think about it."

"...Actually."She tilted her head slightly.

"I already have one in mind."

"You do?"

She nodded.

"But..."

Her lips curved into a mischievous smile so faint it almost disappeared.

"I’m not telling you yet."

Mylo blinked.

"So it’s a secret?"

"...For now."

He laughed.

"I didn’t expect manga recommendations to have suspense."

"They do."

She answered with surprising confidence.

"If I tell you now..."

"You’ll spend all night wondering."

"...You’re definitely doing that on purpose."

"...Maybe."

The tiny hint of playfulness in her voice surprised even herself.

...I actually teased him.

The realization left her momentarily stunned.

A few hours ago...She could barely look him in the eye.

Now...She had joked with him.

’Maybe...’

’I’m changing too.’

The thought made her smile without realizing it.

"...Then."

She took a small step backwards.

"I’ll see you tomorrow."

"Tomorrow."

Mylo repeated.

"The senior introductions."

His expression unconsciously grew more thoughtful.

Tomorrow, the introduction part of induction program will be held, along with it tours of multiple departments would begin and continue till fourth day.

This time...

I’ll pay closer attention.

I can’t keep reacting after everything has already happened.

"...Mylo?"

He blinked as Reina called out to him.

"Hm?"

"...You’re making that face again."

He instinctively touched the space between his eyebrows.

"...That obvious?"

She nodded.

"...You look like you’re carrying the whole world by yourself."

He gave a helpless smile.

"I’ll work on it."

’what has him so worried?’

She answered quietly.

"Sometimes...it’s okay to let someone carry a little of it with you."

The words slipped out before she had time to think.

Her face immediately turned red.

"I-I mean...

"...Not me specifically...

"I just meant...

"...People."

She lowered her head in defeat.

"...I said something embarrassing again."

Mylo couldn’t help smiling.

"I think I understood what you meant."

"...You did?"

"Yeah."

"...Good."

She let out a tiny sigh of relief before giving him one final smile.

"Then..."

"See you tomorrow."

Before he could answer, she turned and began walking towards the girls’ dormitory.

After only a few steps, she paused.

Without looking back, she raised one hand above her shoulder and gave him a small wave.

Then she hurried away.

Mylo watched until her figure disappeared beyond the campus buildings.

Only then did he turn towards the main gate.

The smile on his face slowly faded.

A bloody red screen was showing him the second reward he had recieved for daily quest completion.

Going to Leh lake at midnight.... Will it really be safe? But i can’t just judge everything by safety.

I have to take the risk. Earlier against Braden I was powerless, physically I don’t stand any chance against him.

If this can help me get stronger, then checking it out will be worth it.

He fixed his gaze on the sun, it was almost submerged in the vast canopy of deep forest, beyond that forest was the Leh lake.

Let’s hope nothing too dangerous happens.

---

A black SUV remained parked across the road from the university entrance.

Braden leaned against the vehicle, staring towards the gate with an unreadable expression.

Vanessa quietly stepped beside him.

"He already left."

"I know."

Braden’s voice was calm. But his brows were stressed against each other.

"...You’re angry."

He let out a humorless laugh.

"Wouldn’t you be?

The whole campus saw it.

"They may not know his name.

"But they’ll remember mine."

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

"The first week is when reputations are built."

She folded her arms.

"If people start believing they can challenge you..."

"They will." Braden clicked his tongue. He was in second year, it was his duty to make sure freshers understand college hierarchy.

But because of motherfucker Mylo, he had to face the humiliation. He wished he could punch every teeth out of that fucker.

Silence settled between them.

After a few moments, Braden pulled his phone from his pocket. He scrolled through his contacts before pressing one name.

The call connected almost immediately.

> "Braden?"

"I need a favor."

A brief chuckle came from the other side.

> "Already?"

"Yeah."

> "Who is it this time?"

Braden’s eyes remained fixed on the university gates.

"A freshman."

The voice laughed.

> "You’re asking me to deal with a freshman?"

Braden’s expression didn’t change.

"...He’s different. He make my blood boil, I can’t control myself, I think killing him might be best choice.’’

The laughter stopped. A short silence followed.

> "... Don’t do anything. If your actions bring unwanted attention to us, that might be the last thing you would do.’’

The voice was deep, but laced with a certain dominance.

"That’s why I have called you. I will arrange something, you just handle the aftermath. You can do atleast that much, aun?’’

After a brief silence call ended. Bradon punched the car in anger.

’’Every single bastard... Don’t blame me for shit! And that bitch Mylo, I will teach you a lesson you’ll remember for rest of your life!’’

Vanessa glanced at him. Her chest supported by her hands, she sighed.

She didn’t ask anything else.

There was no point.

Braden had already made up his mind.

His gaze remained fixed on the now quiet campus.

The evening wind swept across the empty road as the lights inside the university slowly flickered to life, marking the end of the first day... and the beginning of something far more complicated.
