Chapter 21: 21.Hidden Quest-2

The lake stretched out beneath a sky that shouldn’t exist. Every star hung wrong, too many, too close together, some of them pulsing a dull, arterial red instead of white.

The water beneath them matched the sky, a still, dark crimson that reflected nothing back, no moon, no clouds, nothing at all. A dark slate waiting to get painted over.

’’Whahhh...!...Huff..haah..ha..!’’

Mylo broke the surface of lake, the thicker than usual dark red water clinging to his body as if it was refusing to let him go.

’’Ugh...cough! Cough..!’’

He clawed his way onto the muddy bank, lungs burning, his whole body trembling as he collapsed forward onto his hands and knees.

’’Haa..haa.. where.. where the hell am I..?’’

He stayed like that for a moment, dripping, gasping, his mind completely blank except for one single, screaming thought.

Where...?! Where... Just where is this place...?

.....

[NOTIFICATION]

The Hidden Quest has begun.

Objective: Become a resident of Naraka.

.....

’’What.. what does that even mean..?

Narak...? Doesn’t that mean hell...have I come to hell?!

’’Dammit!’’

Of course I will be in hell! What did I even expected to happen?

’’Status,’’ he rasped out, voice cracked and raw, still catching his breath.

The blood-red screen flickered up in front of him.

....

.....

Charisma, Influence and Pleasure went up. Right. The reward from before.

He didn’t have time to feel good about it.

He pushed himself upright, legs shaking beneath him, water still dripping steadily off his soaked clothes and pooling around his shoes.

’’How.. how do I even get back from here..?’’

The thought settled cold in his stomach the moment he said it out loud.

Can I even get back? What if I can’t?

’’Come on, system, work with me here. What’s the deal with this place?’’

.....

[NOTIFICATION]

Complete the Hidden Quest to gain free passage between Naraka and Earth.

Failure to complete will result in permanent residency.

.....

’’Permanent.. residency..’’

He read the word over twice, like repeating it might change its meaning.

’’What kind of insane, impossible quest is this?!’’ he shouted at the empty sky.

Nothing answered. Not even an echo.

He wiped a hand down his face, forced a shaky breath into his lungs, and staggered toward the treeline anyway.

There wasn’t exactly another option on the table.

Okay. Okay. Just, find a way out first. Figure out the rest of it later.

He made it maybe ten steps before the growling started.

’’Graawwuu....grrrrr...’’

He froze mid-step.

The world around him held only two colors, black shadow and dull red light, nothing else.

No green in the trees, no brown in the dirt, as if color itself had been rationed out and none left over for anything except blood and dark.

Something moved between the trunks ahead of him.

.....

[NOTIFICATION]

Vexfang detected.

Warning: Poisonous.

.....

It stepped into the open, and Mylo’s stomach dropped straight through the ground.

It walked like a hyena but wore the shape wrong. Too gaunt. Ribs pressed up visibly through patchy, sickly-yellow fur, its spine tracing along its back in cracked, blackened ridges, as though something had burned it from the inside and left only the char behind.

Its jaw hung slightly unhinged, dripping a thin fluid that hissed faintly the moment it struck stone, tiny wisps of vapor curling up wherever a drop landed.

That’s, that’s acid, isn’t it..?

Okay. Okay, run, just run, RUN!

He didn’t get the chance.

’’Skreeee!’’

It lunged right at him.

’’Gah!!’’

Claws raked across his forearm as he threw it up half a second too late, pain screaming white behind his eyes.

He hit the ground hard, air punched clean out of his lungs.

’’Guh.. ah..!’’

It was on him instantly, jaws snapping, teeth grazing his shoulder as he twisted away on pure animal panic, elbows and knees scrambling uselessly through the mud.

No plan! No weapon! No idea what I’m even doing right now!

’’Rrrrgh!!’’

’’Fuck!! Fuck! Fuck!!!’’

Its claws caught his side next, tearing through fabric and skin together. He screamed, more sound than word, dragging himself backward, mud filling his nails, his shoes, everywhere.

System! system!! Do something!! Anything, please!!

Nothing came.

The Vexfang lunged again, and this time its jaw closed hard around his calf.

’’AAAAGH!!’’

White-hot pain tore through him, and underneath it, something colder started spreading, crawling up from the bite like ice slowly replacing blood in his veins.

Poison...? It’s already in me! I can’t, I can’t think straight anymore..

His vision swam, edges going soft and grey. His hand shot out on blind instinct, grabbing for anything solid, some small stubborn part of his brain still screaming to fight even as the rest of his body stopped listening to him.

.....

[NOTIFICTION]

The pleasure has taken effect.

....

His fingers closed around something soft.

The creature jerked violently, an ugly, startled yelp tearing out of its throat. it’s whole body suddenly covered in the pink hue before going blank.

"..huh?"

Something in Mylo’s chest lit up, sudden and completely unbidden, Pleasure surging without permission, without warning, and for one single, bizarre heartbeat the Vexfang went rigid, confused, its whole body flinching away from his grip instead of pressing toward him.

What..

He didn’t understand it. He didn’t need to.

Instinct took over where thought couldn’t keep up anymore.

His hand tightened, wrenched hard, and the creature shrieked, a sound closer to something dying than something attacking, as his fingers found the soft, unprotected place between its hind legs and ripped.

’’Riiip!!’’

The Vexfang convulsed, and Mylo’s other hand drove forward into the sudden, boneless gap opening along its side, punching through thin flesh where there should have been ribs and finding nothing there at all.

’’Squelch!!’’

He tore through the ugly monster, black but shiny blood painting the ground below.

The creature’s shriek cut off mid-sound, its whole body collapsing sideways into the mud, twitching once, then going still.

.....

[NOTIFICATION]

Vexfang eliminated.

Prana absorbed: minimal.

.....

Mylo barely registered the words, chest heaving, blood and mud smeared across both hands.

Poison! Poison’s still spreading! I need to...!

His vision blurred further at the edges, his legs already unsteady beneath him, the whole world tilting sideways like the lake itself had somehow followed him onto land.

Then the shadow fell over him.

He looked up, slow, sluggish, his body no longer entirely his own to command, and understood, in the last clear moment his mind would give him, that there were more.

Many more.

Vexfang after Vexfang emerging out from the treeline, dozens of pale, hunched shapes closing in on him from every direction at once.

I can’t, I can’t even stand right now..!

He didn’t get to finish the thought.

The nearest one burst.

’’Splorch!!’’

Then another, and another, wet and sudden, blood spraying across the mud in violent arcs, the creatures dying before they ever reached him, torn apart by something Mylo never even saw coming.

A figure stepped through the carnage, wrapped head to foot in dark, ragged cloth, moving without hurry, without a single sound.

Mylo tried to lift his arm. It didn’t respond.

Wait..!

A hand closed around his throat, cold even through the poison-numbed haze already spreading across his skin, and the last thing he saw before the world went black was the cloth-wrapped figure tilting its head, studying him like something it had never once expected to find alive.

That’s when his body gave up as his vision went blank.
