Chapter 46: 46.Channels through heart-4

Carey kicked the door open with both pistols already raised.

He stepped into the hallway with both guns raised, aiming in opposite directions. Scanning his surroundings, he chose to head in the direction opposite to where Mylo had originally came from.

"Keep an eye on my back," Carey ordered in a low, firm voice. "Make sure to signal me the moment anyone shows up."

The pounding beat of his heart vibrated right in Mylo’s ears, so intense he could feel every faint sensation prickling across his skin.

Up ahead, the heavy crunch of footsteps echoed down the corridor. Carey reacted instantly, pressing his back flat against the wall and sliding toward the corner. The second he reached the edge, he pivoted and unleashed a lightning-fast volley at the thug rushing toward them.

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

The deafening roar of the gunfire echoed wildly down the narrow hallway as three rounds tore straight through the attacker’s chest, dropping him instantly.immediately answered by the frantic, chaotic clicking of dozens of boots charging toward their position.

"Bastards! There he is! Shoot!"

"Oh, God-" Before the goon could finish his sentence, a round from Carey’s gun blew through his skull, painting the wall behind him in a red slurry.

"Take cover! They have guns! Take cover!" the goon shouted in panic. "Anyone with a piece, get up front! Come forward and shoot them!"

While the goons were frantically trying to organize, Carey charged forward with total, ice-cold control. His stance was locked, his grip on both pistols rock-steady.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Carey unleashed a quick succession of shots directly into their cluster. The roar of gunfire echoed down the corridor, churning up dust and plaster as stray rounds tore into the side walls. Within seconds, the tight hallway filled with a thick, suffocating wall of smoke.

"Where did he go?!" someone yelled. "I can’t see him!’’

Their chaotic shouting was cut short. Carey, who had been crawling low through the haze, suddenly rose right in front of them like a phantom.

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

Before they could even process his presence, heavy-caliber rounds shattered their skulls. Blood sprayed across the surviving thugs. One goon shuddered in sheer horror as his partner’s blood slid down his cheeks and into his mouth. Before he could even gag on the copper taste, two bullets punched through his chest, throwing him backward.

Carey called back to Mylo, his voice sharp through the smoke. "Hey, kid! Don’t stray too far! Do not engage anyone!" Changing his magazine, he pushed forward.

Mylo, coughing through the dusty smoke, stayed glued to Carey’s shadow, his face pale with shock. He didn’t know much about high-level combat tactics, but the horrific results spoke for themselves, Carey was infinitely more skillful and dangerous than he could have ever imagined.

Carey kept pushing forward, leading Mylo through intersection after intersection, dropping anyone who dared cross their path.

Unbeknownst to Mylo, however, Carey was sweating furiously, his breathing growing heavier and more ragged with every passing second.

Rounding another corner, Carey pulled the trigger on an attacker, but only a dry click echoed out.

Out of ammo. Mylo’s blood ran cold!

Without missing a beat, Carey hurled the empty gun straight at the goon’s face. The heavy steel weapon cracked the man across the forehead, disorienting him just long enough for Carey to close the distance.

In one fluid motion, Carey drew his combat knife and slashed the man’s throat wide open.

A high-pressure jet of blood gushed out, painting Carey’s short hair and running down his face.

"You bastard!" a voice screamed.

Although Carey had put that attacker down, a fresh swarm of armed thugs rushed down the corridor, effectively boxing him in.

Taking a deep breath, Carey jumped straight in.

Frenzied screams and the sickening sound of open flesh being carved filled the intersection. The metallic stench of blood grew so thick it was suffocating. In the sheer chaos and ringing gunshots, it was almost impossible for Mylo, who was crouched behind a corner, to even tell who was fighting whom.

Carey was operating purely on instinct and killer focus, but physical fatigue was rapidly catching up to his body.

"Take this, you freak!"

A heavy blow slipped past Carey’s guard, cracking him across the jaw. He stumbled backward but instantly recovered, ducking under a follow-up strike, grabbing the attacker’s arm, and snapping it backward at the elbow with a brutal crunch.

Carey snatched another goon by the back of the head while driving a vicious high knee straight up.

CRACK!

A bone-breaking sound rang out as the attacker’s face caved inward, killing him on the spot.

A few remaining gang members backed away, paralyzed by fear. But Carey didn’t give them room to breathe, he launched himself forward, burying his knife deep into a man’s throat. The dying thug thrashed frantically, grabbing Carey’s arms, so Carey simply yanked the blade upward inside the throat, driving the point straight through the man’s upper jaw.

"You fucking monster!" one of the goons shrieked in absolute terror.

The rest of the mob collapsed into a blind, animalistic frenzy. Driven by pure adrenaline, fear, and bloodlust, they surged forward at once.

The channels through their heart pumping more adrenaline than ever.

Mylo, watching the brutal, visceral massacre unfold just feet away, couldn’t help but take a slow, terrified step backward.

As the fight dragged on, the sheer number of attackers slowly began to thin, but just as a breath of relief felt possible, a heavy side door was kicked off its hinges!

A fresh squad of bodyguards clad in sharp suits spilled out. One of them, wielding a heavy steel rod, swung it straight at Carey’s head while Carey was fully occupied choking out another goon.

Damn it!

The steel pipe flashed in Carey’s peripheral vision. For a split second, his breath caught in his throat, his exhausted body simply couldn’t react in time to block.

CRACK!

A sickening sound of splintering bone echoed through the corridor.

Carey’s eyes widened in sheer shock as Mylo stepped into the frame, throwing a devastating punch that snapped the bodyguard’s arm straight in half.

"Aghhhhh!" Mylo roared. He grabbed the screaming bodyguard by the throat, shoved him headfirst into the rest of the suited reinforcements, and delivered a heavy kick to their front runner’s gut, clearing a small pocket of space.

"I’ll support from behind!" Mylo yelled.

"You’re tougher than I thought, kid!" Carey grunted.

The few seconds Mylo bought him were all Carey needed to catch his breath and regain his focus.

Re-energized, Carey lunged back into the fray, driving his elbows straight into the temples and jawlines of the nearest bodyguards. Mylo threw himself into the fight as well, flailing against the incoming thugs.

"Stop wasting energy!" Carey shouted over the deafening noise. "Aim only for vital points. Take them down with minimal effort!"

"Got it!" Mylo called back.

It was brutal, precise, and exhausting, but Mylo focused every ounce of his energy on targeting the weak spots he could remember. Before long, Mylo’s own clothes were soaked through with blood.

A strange, dark familiarity washed over Mylo.

He remembered the pool of blood filled with human remains he had been thrown before.

This one felt a lot bearable though. It wasn’t repulsive, rather he felt a strange frenzy in his mind. For some reason, he felt home.

His heart pounded fiercely, pumping oxygen and adrenaline through his veins to sustain his upgraded strength. He felt his blood vessels straining under the pressure as he slammed a fist into a guard’s throat, dropping the man cold to the floor.

"Mylo! Look at that door!" Carey barked, pointing toward a reinforced blue door down the corridor. "It leads to the alleyway behind the complex! Go three blocks down and you’ll hit the main street. From there, it’s up to you to vanish!"

Mylo froze mid-stance, bewildered. "Huh? Why are you telling me this now?!"

"Go! Move!"

"What the hell are you saying, Carey?!" Mylo yelled, grabbing a bodyguard and slamming his head into the brick wall, crushing his skull.

Carey looked Mylo dead in the eyes, both of their faces smeared in dark, crimson blood.

"They’re going to keep coming," Carey growled, his voice thick with exertion. "There are too many of them in this facility. If we both stay here, neither of us makes it out."

"That doesn’t mean I’m just going to leave you behind!" Mylo argued, panic rising. "What about you?!"

"Do I look like the type to sacrifice myself?" Carey snapped, ducking under a punch and driving his knife into an attacker’s side. "I need you to escape so you can help me on the outside! Right now, you’re holding me back!"

The words hit Mylo like a physical blow, but he knew Carey was right. If Carey were alone, his speed would have allowed him to break through long ago. He was taking hits and staying pinned down specifically to protect Mylo.

I need to keep a cool head, Mylo forced himself to think. Carey surely doesn’t appear to be someone who would sacrifice himself.

"When I give the signal, duck behind me!" Carey barked.

Carey grabbed a massive bodyguard horizontally, his muscles bulging and veins popping against his skin as he let out a primal roar. Using the man’s heavy frame as a human battering ram, Carey plowed forward, shoving the entire wave of attackers back and creating an opening.

"Duck!"

Mylo dropped low, sliding beneath Carey’s arm.

"Now get the hell out of here!" Carey roared, holding the mob back with brute force.

Mylo didn’t look back as he scrambled toward the exit, but right as his hand hit the crash bar of the blue door, he shouted over his shoulder: "Carey, I need you! For everything I’m planning to do, I need you alive! So don’t you dare die here!"

With that, Mylo shoved the door open and burst into the alley.

Carey let out a raspy, blood-soaked laugh. "Bastard... I’d burn this whole damn city to the ground before I let myself die in a hole like this."

Just then, Carey’s sharp golden eyes cut through the crowd of remaining thugs. Standing at the far end of the hallway, cowering behind a row of bodyguards, was the bald man who had raised the alarm.

Carey’s smirk widened into a terrifying, murderous grin. He drew a deep breath and screamed at the top of his lungs:

"I am definitely killing you bastard!"

With a roar of pure fury, Carey threw himself straight into the sea of gang members.
