Chapter 48: 48.Smiles under fading sunlight-2

Mylo smiled at Reina. He already had an idea of what she was talking about.

Taking out a book, she quickly pushed it toward him.

"T-this is the manga I wanted to give you!"

He took it and nodded.

It was the same volume he had seen in her room earlier:

’I Accidentally Became the Main Villain’s Mother’s Favorite Daughter-In-Law Candidate!!!’

Reina couldn’t contain her excitement which erased her earlier embarrassment instantly.

"It’s a really good manga! It has a super smart MC, and even the other characters behave like real people!’’

’’Even the villain is really dashing! His older brother looks the coolest, and the mother is drawn so well!’’

She beamed, bouncing slightly on her tiptoes.

’’I think it’s the best of this decade!"

"Now, now, calm down before you give me any spoilers.’’

"Ah...!"

Realizing her outburst, she shrank back, instantly sheepish.

"S-sorry... I got too excited..."

"I’ll make sure to read it later."

Mylo reached out, ruffling her hair gently before walking again.

"...!?"

Reina gave a little pout at his action, but it quickly turned into a sweet smile as she settled her glasses and walked beside him.

Mylo felt his body relax. The exhaustion was still there, but in that moment, a quiet walk with a friend was more than enough.

As they reached the girls’ hostel, a figure standing near the entrance instantly shattered Mylo’s calm state of mind.

"Hey, Venice!" Reina called out, waving her hand in greeting.

The blonde girl with her hair tied in a high ponytail turned around, a wide smile spreading across her face.

"Aww, guess you’ve already got yourself a boyfriend, huh, Reina?"

"Ah! N-no, no, no! He’s not my boyfriend!"

Reina quickly defended herself, before muttering the next words under her breath. "...For now."

Stepping closer, Reina made the introductions.

"H-He’s my friend, Mylo. Mylo, this is my new roommate, Venice."

"Good to see you again, Mr. Angry," Venice purred, her eyes locking onto Mylo.

"Hmm? You guys know each other?"

Reina asked, looking between the two of them.

"Of course! We have a connection, you know," Venice said, moving toward them with the fluid grace of a snake. "We are-"

"Acquaintances."

Mylo cut her off instantly.

"We’re acquaintances."

"R-really?"

"Yeah, I just got to know her recently.’’

He turned his attention back to Reina, his tone softening.

"You should go rest, Reina. It’s been a long day."

"W-What about you?"

"I’d like to have a little chat with Venice. You’re free for a few minutes, right?"

Venice gave a quick wink.

"I have so many things to do, but how could I refuse my junior? You can go up ahead, sweetie."

Hearing their exchange, Reina realized they were asking her to leave them alone.

"O-Okay... I’ll leave you both alone then. Bye, Mylo."

"Yeah. See you tomorrow," Mylo replied with a nod.

As she stepped inside the hostel and turned back to close the doors, Mylo and Venice both raised a hand to wave goodbye.

Standing in the doorway, a mix of sadness and anger began sprouting in her heart.

Her heart felt as if it was trying to tell her something, sending weird, unfamiliar signals.

She offered a quiet wave back before shutting the hostel doors, pushing those strange feelings to the back of her mind.

"You seem to have been busy, Mr. Angry," Venice murmured softly.

Her fingers reached out, sliding behind his ear where a trace of dried blood still lingered.

Mylo caught her wrist and pushed away instantly.

"It’s unrelated. There hasn’t been any problem here, has there?"

She let out a soft chuckle, shaking her head.

"Nothing. If anything happens, I’ll let you know. But still... you should finish the fight you started soon."

"I didn’t start anything."

"Hmph, does it even matter?"

Venice smirked, leaning in slightly.

"If you don’t take action soon, Brandon will."

Mylo’s fight tightened for a second before he let go with a heavy sigh.

"I... don’t really care about him right now."

His biggest worry now was Aldoff, someone far more dangerous.

"I’m really thankful to you for helping me," Mylo said quietly.

"I already told you, I just didn’t want someone like Raina to get involved."

Her face shifted until it was only inches away from his, her eyes searching his.

"Are you still not going to tell me how you’re involved with Aldoff, though?" she asked, her voice dropping to a low whisper.

"The story probably won’t satisfy your curiosity," Mylo said solemnly.

"I believe in the journey more than the destination, though," Venice murmured, a faint smirk on her lips.

"Just hearing you narrate it would be enough satisfaction for me."

Mylo slid his hand over her waist, pulling her closer until there was no space left between them.

"If it’s just about satisfaction... I have better ways."

Their eyes locked.

Venice scoffed softly, though she didn’t flinch.

Instead, she pushed off his chest and pulled away.

"I quite like bold guys, but don’t push yourself. You might not fear Aldoff, but you should before trying to woo me."

"You’re mistaken about that," Mylo replied, shrugging his shoulders. "I’m actually quite scared of him. And a lot of other things."

"Really? It certainly doesn’t look like that based on your actions."

"I take action because of that fear," Mylo said. "I fear what will become of me if I don’t."

Amused, Vanice searched his gaze, leaning her head back slightly.

"That sounds like a load of bullshit... but I can’t find a single lie in your eyes."

"Eyes don’t tell you everything about a person."

"Maybe not everything, but they do tell a lot."

"What do mine tell you?" Mylo asked.

"I haven’t searched them long enough to figure it out."

"Then do it now," Mylo said, stepping back in and erasing the distance she had just created. "Look into them. Tell me what they say to you."

Venice smiled, her eyes glittering with amusement.

"This isn’t enough to get me, you know."

Giving him a playful wink, she took two steps backward toward the hostel doors.

"Try a little harder next time, Mr. Angry."

"You should really drop that nickname."

"Hmm... maybe after you drop the anger," she called back.

Waving her hand over her shoulder, she slipped inside the dormitory. Mylo watched through the tinted glass section of the door until her silhouette faded into the hallway lights.

Do I really seem that angry to her?

Shaking his head, Mylo turned and walked away into the red sunlight.

At the end of the day, she’s still the sister of both Brandon and Aldoff. I can’t completely trust her. Keeping her close while staying on guard for any trap is the smartest way to handle her.

His next stop was the mess, but upon arriving, he found himself facing an unexpected headache.

"Sir, your meal registration has already been canceled," the receptionist stated.

"What?" Mylo frowned.
