Chapter 66: 66.Forest of No shade-6

Mylo coughed violently as the fine black dust got into his lungs, burning his chest.

In a desperate motion, he swung his antler and machete around in wide arcs, trying to block any incoming attack he couldn’t see.

He could hear the chaotic tuck-tuck of hooves circling all around him in the haze.

Suddenly, a Tkern came crashing directly into his body, clearly just as startled and blind as he was.

Mylo reacted on instinct, he swung the antler in his hand and violently raked its six sharp spikes across the monster’s flank.

With his other hand, he brought his chipped machete down with all his weight.

Clang!

Before his blade could finish its arc, something broad and extraordinarily powerful slammed into his side.

It knocked the wind out of him.

He cried as his body was thrown tumbling more than ten feet through the dirt.

Mylo scrambled to his knees and stared into the dark.

A towering figure, nearly two meters tall, stood there in the settling dust. Its body was absurdly broad and heavy.

Oh no... it’s-

Mylo instinctively brought his antler up in a cross-block as a long, pointy appendage swung directly at his head.

CLANG!

The impact rattled straight through his bones, pushing him back through the dirt.

"You-ugh!-bastards!"

Mylo screamed, blood and tears streaming down his bruised face.

"Were you all just waiting for me to drop my guard?!’’

’’How is it that every single one of you shows up at a time like this?!’’

Tell me, is this a deliberate setup by someone, or WHAT?!"

The creature looming before him was massive.

One of its arms ended not in a hand, but in a long, tough rod that narrowed towards end.

Its other arm had mutated into a massive, broad, shield-like slab of bone and flesh.

Its head resembled a bear’s, but with two jagged fangs extending 15 centimeters past its lower jaw.

Its eyes were hollow black sockets with tiny, burning red pupils.

Worst of all, its hide was made of such a deep, unnatural shade of black that it visually separated itself from the dark abyss of the forest around it.

It let out a low growl.

Mylo instantly recognized it.

It was a Bearash.

Right at that moment.

The Nothrought came sprinting at Mylo.

It slammed its thick horn straight into his side.

Mylo was hurled backward through the air, crashing violently through several trees before slamming into the dirt.

His body, which had barely begun to recover, was plunged right back into hell. The throbbing agony in his left side flared up with a vengeance, and his vision swam as his head grew heavier and heavier.

Haah... haah...

Standing up on shaking legs, he frantically scanned his surroundings, trying desperately to keep track of every direction at once.

The entire clearing was choked with dense, pitch-black smoky dust, making it impossible to see even a single meter ahead clearly.

The chaotic, manic shrieks of the Tkerns and the deep roars of the Nothrought echoed through the haze.

Mylo swung his antler and machete in random, wild arcs.

Whenever a Tkern stumbled blindly out of the smoke, Mylo carved through it with his machete.

Whenever a heavy impact rattled his bones, he scrambled blindly through the dirt to dodge.

Whenever the Nothrought’s massive horn swept through the dark, Mylo threw himself beneath it, desperately stabbing at its soft underbelly before getting tossed aside once more.

The cycle repeated again and again. The frantic chaos refused to die down.

Why does nothing ever go right?!

Why is everything always going wrong for me?!

Whatever I plan, the exact opposite happens.

I can’t control anything!!

Is that really what you think? Do you really think that you were ever in control?

Mylo’s frantic thoughts were cut short by a voice echoing in his mind.

He jerked his head around, eyes wide, but found no one through the dust.

Sensory numb!

That won’t help you, Mylo.

"Huh?! Who is it?! Who is talking to me?!"

Mylo screamed into the abyss.

Is there someone else here? Is someone behind all of this?!

How long are you going to keep looking for someone else to blame, Mylo?

"Huh?! Who are you?! COME OUT!"

So that you can put all the blame on me, too?

Mylo continued to wildly hack away at the Tkerns crashing into him.

Guh!

He braced against a glancing hit from the Nothrought and crawled backward through the dirt.

You were given such an amazing chance at a second life... So why did you come here?

"Huh?! What are you talking about?! I came here to complete the quest!"

Oh? Was that really how it began, though? Think about it.

"Think about what?! What do you want from me?!"

Think about the moment it all truly began.

Mylo slashed his machete through a lunging Tkern just as the Bearash’s bone shield slammed viciously into his back, throwing him meters away.

"IT ALL BEGAN BECAUSE THE SYSTEM FORCED ME TO COME HERE!"

No, it didn’t. You’re trying to shift the blame for your own failures again. It all began because you tried to save Reina.

"..."

Mylo’s eyes went wide with shock.

"Stop it... Whoever you are, STOP IT!"

What? Is it that hard to accept? If you hadn’t interfered with that girl, you wouldn’t have gotten involved with anyone else. You wouldn’t have needed to get stronger. You could have just lived a quiet life without getting involved with anyone.

"I SAID STOP!"

Tell me Mylo Zane, why haven’t you abondoned this quest yet?

’’!’’

You can leave Narak behind and run to Earth. Why have you not done that yet?

’’Huff...! But if I did that... If I run away...It.. everything will be meaningless...’’

How will you escaping alive become meaningless?

’’I will not have any courage to come back again!’’

You never had any courage! It was always your fear! And now that fear has made you choose death!

"I’m NOT going to die!"

You are. You will die right here, and your second life will end just as pathetically as your first.

"No... No! NO! I won’t let that happen! I will survive this! I’ll defeat these monsters, I’ll get stronger, and then... then I will... I will..."

See? You don’t even have a goal. You were just pretending to have one.

GUUH!

The Bearash’s broad shield slammed straight into his face.

The force sent Mylo flying, his whole face going completely numb. As he tumbled through the air, time itself seemed to freeze.

In the smoke, looking behind bearsh, he saw a version of his past self, the older, broken version of him that was falling from that building.

He was talking to himself all this time.

You have no goals. No aspirations. In the end, you were just lost in your own pathetic misery. Now, sleep... and free this world from your pathetic existence.

The phantom image of his past self faded, replaced by the lethal, needle-sharp appendage of the Bearash aiming straight for his head.

Mylo closed his eyes.

I should have at least read her manga volume...

Clang!

The metallic impact vibrated straight through the forest.

Opening his eyes, Mylo saw a girl wrapped in a frayed red cloth, her leg extended in a clean, powerful kick that redirected the Bear Ash’s lethal arm away from his face.

Tritia looked down at him, her voice ringing sharp and fierce through the smoke:

"Hmm?! What are you doing on the ground?! Are you giving up?! Tell me!"
