Chapter 71: 71.Feelings That Need Rediscovery-5

Mylo screamed, spreading his antler and machete wide as he charged directly into the path of the oncoming Nothrought.

Having just narrowly escaped the Bearash’s deadly strike, Tritia sprinted from behind, closing the distance in a flash. Her extended claws glowed with a faint, angry red tint. With a blitzing swing, she raked her claws across the back of the Nothrought’s hind leg, her sharp nails snagging and tearing completely through its thick tendon.

Heeeennnnnn!

A gut-wrenching roar echoed across the clearing as the giant beast’s leg gave out, sending its massive body collapsing forward.

Mylo gritted his teeth, thrusting the antler forward.

The tip caught the falling head of the Nothrought just before it hit the dirt, wedging its heavy snout upward for a fraction of a second and creating a narrow gap underneath.

Mylo dropped low, sliding through the dirt straight beneath the falling monster.

As the crushing weight descended above him, he tightened his grip, raised his machete with both hands, and drove the blade deep into the soft, unarmored skin of the Nothrought’s belly.

shhhk-eekk!

A final, deafening death shriek tore from the creature as Mylo’s blade ripped through its entire underbelly. Black blood and heavy organs spilled out over him as he slid out from under the beast just in time.

thump!

The black soil erupted into the air as the massive corpse hit the ground with a bone-rattling thud.

Panting heavily, covered in dark gore, Mylo didn’t pause for a single second. Without looking back, he scrambled to his feet and sprinted toward Tritia.

Catching his signal, Tritia instantly leaped to her side.

wham!

The bone-shield arm cratered the spot where she’d stood a heartbeat before, shattering the earth and throwing up a wave of dark dust.

"Hmm, Mylo! What should we do about this one?! Tell me!" Tritia shouted over the roar of the wind.

Mylo didn’t slow down. He sprinted straight past the towering form of the Bearash, his eyes locked on the behemoth.

"I have to get close to it!" Mylo yelled back. "Can you draw its attention and create an opening?!"

"Hmm! I will try!"

Neither of them stopped, even for a single second.

A stray Tkern lunged at Mylo’s flank. Without breaking stride, Mylo grabbed the beast’s horn, braced himself, and brought his machete down with unstable stroke. The blade lodged deep into the Tkern’s skull. Mylo snapped the monster’s antler off with his off-hand, kicked the carcass hard to free his blade, and kept running.

Beside him, Tritia moved so fast her ascended body left a faint trail of black smoke in the air.

Tracing a sharp arc across the dirt, she launched herself high into the air straight toward the Bearash.

The Bearash reacted instantly, thrusting its needle-sharp rod hand directly at her. Despite the monster’s massive size, the strike was terrifyingly fast, closing the distance in less than a second.

Mid-air, Tritia twisted her body, escaping the impaling rod by a hair’s breadth. But before she could recover her balance, the Bearash’s massive bone-shield arm swept through the air like a wall of solid stone.

wham!

"GAAAH!"

A sickening crack echoed as the blow slammed directly into her chest.

Her frail body was hurled through the smoke, skidding meters through the dust.

"TRITIA!" Mylo screamed.

He hurled the broken Tkern antler straight at the Bearash’s face.

clack!

The projectile bounced harmlessly off the monster’s hide, but it bought him a single second of distraction.

Mylo turned on his heel and sprinted frantically toward where she had landed.

When he reached her, his stomach dropped into a abyss.

Tritia was curled on her side, thick, dark blood pouring from her mouth as she coughed violently.

Mylo dropped to his knees and hooked his arm under her shoulders, pulling her up.

"Tritia! Hey! Look at me! Hey!"

Her unfocused eyes rolled toward him. Trembling, her blood-stained hand reached up and lightly brushed against his cheek.

"Hey! Listen to me! Look at me!" Mylo panicked, his mind racing through every option, every spell, every system ability, but the blood was flowing uncontrollably from her chest and mouth.

Then, a faint, raspy whisper escaped her lips.

"Mutual... healing..."

The moment the words left her mouth, an agonizing, crushing weight slammed into Mylo like a falling mountain.

"AH?!"

His knees instantly gave out, slamming hard into the dirt. He barely caught himself with one hand while holding Tritia with the other.

What the hell is this?! What is this pain?!

Suddenly, hot liquid poured down his own face. A violent, internal agony flared in his jaw and throat, feeling as though his own bones were shattering from the inside out.

Through his blurred vision, he watched in utter shock as the massive, caved-in dent on Tritia’s chest rapidly popped back out, her internal bleeding instantly halting as her pale skin knit itself back together.

"Sorry, Mylo..." she rasped softly, her eyes clear again. "I needed to do this."

Before Mylo could even begin to process what she had just said or done, Tritia’s leg snapped up, driving a fierce kick straight into his chest.

thump!

"What the-?!"

The force of her kick sent both of them flying in opposite directions across the dirt.

skrrrt!

A split second later, the Bearash’s long, narrow rod hand slammed into the exact patch of ground where they had been sitting, penetrating the earth over a foot deep.

Sensory Numb! Sensory Numb! Sensory Numb!

Mylo muttered the spell relentlessly in his mind, casting it three times in rapid succession.

With each cast, the searing, bone-deep pain in his jaw and throat dulled just enough for him to function.

Did she... did she just use an ability on me? he thought wildly, his mind racing. Does that mean she can do things like this too? Is she practicing a Sin, or is it something else entirely?

He hit the dirt hard, rolling several times to dissipate his momentum before bracing himself against the earth.

"Mylo! Are you all right?!" Tritia’s frantic scream pierced the air from a distance.
