Chapter 99: 99.Beneath the surface-3

A warm feeling spread through Mylo as he watched the duo bicker with each other. He shook his head with a smile.

"Now, here, take it. You can eat it later at home, okay?"

He offered the plastic box again, but Aaina didn’t take it immediately, frowning a little bit.

"Grandpa is not completely wrong. You already gave me chocolates before. Now you’re giving me this... this colorful, sweet, and tasty-looking fresh pastry. How can I just take it?"

Her eyes were completely fixed on the pastry in his hand.

"Oh, so you don’t like pastries, I see..." A teasing smile formed on his lips as he slightly pulled the pastry back.

"I! I never said anything about not liking it!"

"So you like it a lot and desperately want to taste it, don’t you?"

"Despera...! No! I... ah! You’re teasing me again! Maybe you’re a really, really bad person!"

"Hey, come on, don’t say that. Your reactions are just too cute. I got carried away."

"C-cute!? Hmph! You just say that and then tease me again!"

Her brown eyes turned away from him, but a second later, they swept past the pastry again.

"Okay, okay, I won’t do that, all right? Why don’t we do this? Let’s trade it for something."

Thinking for a moment, he remembered the candy Aaina had sent through Uncle Joe earlier.

"Yeah. Do you still have any candy on you?"

"Candy? I have candy... but candy and a pastry do not have the same price!"

"Now, now, don’t focus on money. Focus on the emotion."

"Emotion? Then why are you treating me so much? This pastry, and even the chocolates from earlier... why are you giving them to me?"

"I... well, uh... just because. There’s no particular reason, but my intentions are genuine, though."

"That’s weird. No one does that. I even had my chocolate bar taken by my teacher when I tried to eat it during class. She never gave it back!"

"Uh, well, that’s probably because you ate it during class. But, you know... I’d say she should’ve given it back."

"Everyone is selfish. You must have some reason that you’re being kind to me, right?"

"H-hey, Aaina, what are you saying? You’re being very rude!" Uncle Joe tried to butt in, flustered, but she refused to listen to him.

"I will not take anything else from you until you tell me what you want."

Hey, how did the atmosphere suddenly become this serious?

Mylo thought as he racked his brain for a way out of the situation.

The reason for his kindness toward Uncle Joe was simply because he knew him from his previous life, and the fact of his upcoming death due to heart failure. He had subconsciously shown empathy toward him and his granddaughter, Aaina.

But I can’t say that, can I?

He understood why she would be suspicious of him. He was behaving too friendly with them without any clear connection. He realized that, in a way, it was his own selfish action. He wasn’t going to change their situation or their future, but he was easing his own guilt by being kind to her.

He knelt down in front of her and gently took her hand in his palm.

She could probably pass off as Tritia’s older sister, Mylo thought with a soft chuckle.

"I didn’t make myself clear earlier. Sorry for the confusion."

His sincere apology brought Aaina’s full attention back to him.

"It’s true that I don’t have any particular reason, but that doesn’t mean there’s absolutely nothing that I want from you."

"See? I was right. What do you want?"

"What I want is a very good, cute, and smart friend."

"Huh? I don’t understand. What do you mean?"

"Your grandpa told me that you’re a very smart, good, and hardworking girl. So, of course, I’d want to make friends with someone like you, right?"

"So it’s like... trying to make connections because you’re going to be a big deal in the future?"

"Well, uh... we could word that a little better, but yeah."

Aaina continued to look at him with a frowned face before folding her arms and pouting.

"You’re treating me like a clueless child. You didn’t tell me any real reason and just sweet-talked me. That level of playing it off won’t work on me."

"Oh, so you’re smart enough to know what I was trying to do, huh? Damn, I’m busted."

"Of course I am. Don’t ever look down on me!"

"But then, couldn’t you tell how genuine my emotions were? Isn’t that contradictory? What if you’re not really a smart girl, but just pretending to be one?"

"Hey! Of course that’s... that’s not the case! I know that you don’t have any bad intentions."

"But weren’t you just questioning me like I was some suspicious guy?"

"That... that was for a different reason!"

"Huh, what reason, I wonder? Let me think..."

Pretending to be deep in thought, Mylo snapped his eyes open and pointed his finger directly at Aaina.

"You wanted to play hard to get for a pastry, didn’t you?!"

"No, no, no, no! That is not the case!"

She stomped her foot on the ground, her fists clenched tight as she glared at him, a bright red blush spreading across her face.

"Hmph! You just keep teasing me again and again! I will stop talking to you!"

Pouting, she turned her head away so sharply that her twin pigtails whipped through the air.

"Hahaha!" Uncle Joe broke out into laughter.

Mylo joined him with a chuckle, much to Aaina’s displeasure.

"Now, now, enough playing around. Aaina, you were still very rude to him earlier. Apologize properly, okay?"

"No! I’m not doing anything like that! He made fun of me first. Ask him to say sorry!"

"Aaina..."

"It’s all right, it’s all right. I went a little overboard teasing her."

Smiling brightly, Mylo offered the pastry box to her once again.

"So, what do you say, Aaina? Are you still up for the trade?"

"Hmph!"

Her left eye rolled over as it fell on the pastry. She forced her head to turn away even more, but her gaze slowly drifted back toward the box. Huffing to herself, she stomped her foot on the ground once more.

She snatched the pastry box from Mylo’s hand and shoved a packet of candy back into his palm.

"The extra price... I’ll consider it payment for annoying me!"

"Okay, okay. I guess that’s a fair trade now."

Mylo pocketed the candy before checking the time on his wrist.

"Well then, I have a meeting later. I have to go meet someone, so I’ll have to say goodbye here."

"Ah, of course. Sorry she took up so much of your time."

"Oh, no. I really enjoyed meeting her."

"Well, I would’ve enjoyed it too if you didn’t just continue to tease me again and again!"

"It’s partially your fault since you give such cute reactions."

"I... I am always cute! You don’t have to say it all the time!"

Mylo chuckled, seeing the smile she was desperately trying to suppress.

How cute can she be? Hmm? Wait...

The daily quest about satisfying five women... It didn’t state the exact context. It just asked me to satisfy them. What if it’s intentionally vague because it’s meant to be fulfilled based on my own perspective?

Mylo felt like he had suddenly cracked the code to complete the daily quest.

"Hmm... Uncle Joe, how far away do you live?"

"Uh, well, it’s a twenty-minute walk from here. Why do you ask?"

"I was wondering if you could bring Aaina over tonight for dinner."
