Accidentally Pregnant With The Billionaire Heir
Chapter 168 - 167 Embarrassment*** EMILY ***
The morning sunlight is a harsh, uncompromising bleach. It streams through the slight gap in the heavy velvet curtains, cutting a bright, golden line directly across the plush gray carpet of the master bedroom.
I open my eyes slowly. The lingering, suffocating dread of the nightmare has finally ebbed, leaving behind a hollow, aching exhaustion in my chest. I take a deep, steadying breath, filling my lungs with the cool, cedar-scented air of the room. The absolute terror of the yellow raincoat and the deafening gunshot is gone, chased away by the dawn.
A profound, quiet realization settles over me as I stare at the dust motes dancing in the sunbeam. *It is so incredibly good to be alive.*
I turn my head against the soft silk pillowcase.
Alistair is lying on his back on the far side of the massive mattress. He is completely motionless, but his icy blue eyes are wide open, staring directly at the vaulted ceiling. The dark, bruised shadows beneath his eyes are impossible to miss. His jaw is clenched tight, and the faint stubble on his chin completely ruins his usual flawless, machine-like aesthetic.
A sharp pang of guilt hits my stomach. He hasn’t slept a single wink. My violent thrashing and screaming kept him awake the entire night.
Then, the fragmented memories of the night before hit my brain like a freight train.
The adrenaline clears from my system, allowing the humiliating details to finally surface. I remember waking up in absolute, blind terror. But worse than that, I remember what I did next. I remember grabbing the lapels of his expensive charcoal suit jacket. I remember burying my tear-soaked face directly into his chest.
*Please,* I had begged him, my voice cracking in a pathetic, desperate whimper. *Please, just hold me. Don’t let go.*
The blood drains entirely from my face before rushing back in a violent, burning wave of absolute mortification. My cheeks feel like they are physically on fire. I begged the most ruthless, emotionally detached billionaire in Vanguard City for a hug. I clung to him like a frightened, helpless toddler.
I want the floorboards to open up and swallow me whole. I want to spontaneously combust.
Alistair turns his head on the pillow. His piercing blue eyes lock directly onto mine. He notices the sudden shift in my breathing.
"Emily," Alistair says. His deep, gravelly morning voice sends a fresh spike of panic straight into my veins. He sits up slowly, the silver silk sheets pooling around his waist. "We need to discuss what happened last night. You were—"
"My stomach!" I shout, my voice entirely too loud for the quiet room.
Alistair blinks, completely derailed by the sudden interruption. "What?"
"My stomach is completely killing me," I lie, grabbing my abdomen and contorting my face into a mask of sudden, extreme physical agony. "It must have been the fried chicken yesterday. The grease. Food poisoning. I feel terrible."
I do not wait for him to process the terrible excuse. I throw the heavy duvet off my legs, scramble out of the king-sized bed, and sprint barefoot across the plush carpet. I dive into the en-suite bathroom and slam the heavy frosted-glass door shut behind me, immediately throwing the deadbolt lock.
The lock clicks loudly in the quiet space.
I lean my back against the cool glass, pressing my hands over my burning face. I let out a long, silent groan of absolute misery. I slowly turn around and lightly bang my forehead against the door.
*Thump.*
How am I ever going to look him in the eye again?
*Thump.*
I spent weeks meticulously building a fierce, independent armor to prove I wasn’t a liability to his corporate empire, and I shattered the entire illusion by crying into his tailored suit. I am entirely consumed by remorse.
On the other side of the frosted glass, I hear Alistair sigh. It is a heavy, frustrated sound.
"You do not have to talk about the nightmare right now, Emily," Alistair’s voice filters through the door, sounding remarkably restrained. "If you are not ready to disclose the trigger, I will not force an interrogation. Take your time."
I squeeze my eyes shut. The sheer irony is agonizing. He thinks I am hiding in the bathroom because I am deeply traumatized and actively avoiding a psychological breakthrough. He has absolutely no idea I am currently hiding because I am dying of pure, unfiltered embarrassment.
"I’ll be out soon!" I call back weakly, rubbing my bruised forehead.
I hear his heavy footsteps recede across the carpet. A few moments later, the solid oak door of the master suite clicks shut. He has officially left for the corporate headquarters.
I let out a massive breath, finally unlocking the bathroom door. I survive to face him another day.
---
Two hours later, the smell of expensive bergamot cologne is entirely replaced by the harsh, metallic stench of burnt gunpowder.
I stand inside the Wolfe estate’s subterranean tactical range. The underground armory is freezing. I wear a pair of heavy, noise-canceling earmuffs and grip a standard-issue training pistol in my hands.
I need a physical anchor. I need to remind my nervous system that I am capable of defending myself, that I am no longer a helpless child standing in a rainy alleyway.
Leo stands two paces behind my right shoulder, his massive frame radiating quiet, vigilant authority. He watches my stance, acting as my combat instructor.
"Breathe," Leo’s voice buzzes through the electronic comms in my earmuffs. "Control your heart rate. Focus entirely on the front sight post."
I square my shoulders. I raise the heavy black pistol, aligning the iron sights directly with the center mass of the paper silhouette hanging twenty yards down the illuminated concrete tunnel. My finger rests gently against the trigger guard.
*Inhale.*
I stare at the paper target.
The edges of the silhouette begin to blur. The harsh white lights of the shooting range flicker and dim, replaced by the dark, oppressive shadows of a Vanguard City downpour.
My breath hitches.
The paper target shifts. The beige cardboard bleeds into a vibrant, highly unnatural yellow. It is no longer a flat piece of paper. It is a heavy, waterproof raincoat. The top of the silhouette morphs rapidly, forming a grotesque, molded plastic face. The wide, painted red smile of the clown mask stretches across the paper, staring directly back at me down the barrel of my gun.
*No.*
The metallic tang of blood floods my mouth. The deafening echo of my mother’s murder rings in my ears, completely overriding the electronic hum of the earmuffs.
My hands begin to shake. The tremor starts in my wrists and travels violently up my forearms. The front sight post wavers erratically, bouncing off the target entirely. My chest tightens, sealing my lungs shut. I cannot pull the trigger. I cannot move. I am entirely paralyzed by the trauma response violently short-circuiting my nervous system.
A large, heavily calloused hand clamps down firmly over the top of the pistol slide.
Leo steps directly into my line of sight, physically blocking the paper target. He pushes the weapon down toward the concrete floor with smooth, undeniable force.
"Weapon safe," Leo commands, his deep voice cutting sharply through the hallucination. He deftly strips the magazine from the grip and racks the slide, ejecting the chambered round into the air. It clinks loudly against the floor.
I gasp for air, my entire body trembling violently. The yellow raincoat and the clown mask vanish, leaving only the beige paper target swaying gently on its metal wire.
I rip the earmuffs off my head, letting them fall around my neck. I lean forward, resting my hands on my knees as I try to force oxygen back into my starved lungs. Cold sweat beads on the back of my neck.
Leo does not judge me. He simply places the cleared weapon onto the metal bench, his dark eyes watching me with quiet, calculating concern. He recognizes a severe trauma response when he sees one. He knows something is profoundly, deeply wrong.
"I cannot use the training weapons today, Leo," I whisper, my voice shaking as badly as my hands. I stand up straight, wiping the sweat from my forehead.
I look at the massive security operative. The realization is bitter but necessary. The nightmares are escalating, bleeding directly into my waking hours. The illusion of safety inside the estate is no longer enough to keep the panic at bay. I need absolute, lethal reassurance within arm’s reach at all times.
"The Nightblade," I say, my voice hardening with desperate resolve. I look him directly in the eye. "The custom pistol Alistair keeps in the vault. I need you to retrieve it for me."
Leo frowns slightly, his broad shoulders tensing. "You are not cleared to carry a loaded, lethal firearm off the estate premises, Emily. It is a severe liability."
"I am not asking for a training drill," I tell him, refusing to back down. The tremor in my hands finally stops, replaced by an iron-clad determination. "I need it on my person. I need to carry the Nightblade every single time I leave this house."
