WHIRRR!!

「A few minutes later.」

A patrol team’s hover car soared through the sky, slowly descending over the concrete buildings of the Hive District.

Several elite units from the Superpower Bureau were dispatched from the surface, arriving in the old, crowded concrete neighborhood. They included combat personnel, logistical support, and high-level physicians.

Looking around,

The street within the yellow police tape was a complete mess. The glass on many cars parked by the roadside was shattered, their doors twisted and deformed, their emergency flashers still blinking.

Shards of glass and twisted metal littered the ground. Some areas looked like they had been hit by grenades and bombs, with several shallow craters surrounded by radiating scorch marks and shrapnel. A few cars had even been bombed and were still burning, reduced to charred wrecks.

The display windows of most ground-floor shops were shattered. In front of the stores and along the street, many people were squatting with their hands on their heads, being taken into custody by heavily armed patrol officers.

There were also many bodies lying in pools of blood on the roadside, riddled with bullet holes and wounds. From time to time, physicians in white coats would appear, carrying stretchers to take away the injured.

More and more patrol cars with flashing red and blue lights and black Superpower Bureau jeeps gathered near the police tape. Ambulances were urgently dispatched to the scene, while hover cars lifted off, carrying away the critically injured and dying.

"This..."

"How did it get this bad?"

The scene was far worse than the Superpower Bureau reinforcements had anticipated.

The bodies on the street were a gruesome sight; some were clearly members of the Superpower Bureau. Many others were severely injured, either wailing from severed limbs or unconscious from grave wounds.

Witnessing this, Xu Wei and the other captains from East Port wore complicated expressions as they overheard the discussions of bystanders outside the cordon.

"What a bloodbath. These Rebels are too damn bold, launching an attack during the protests. Those explosions earlier were from grenades and bombs, right?"

"There was more. Rumor has it two Superpower Level users showed up—a man in a black robe and a woman in red. See that car over there? They kicked it flying. Several people were killed in an instant..."

"The worst of it was inside that ring-shaped building. I heard six or seven Superpower Level users were fighting in there. The noise was like an artillery barrage."

Whispers rose in a dense wave from all corners of the neighborhood.

Xu Wei and the others felt a tremor of dread and quickly looked toward the entrance of the ring-shaped building.

No matter how many cliques existed within the organization, they were all part of the Superpower Bureau when facing the outside world.

Instinctively, their hearts clenched with worry. They even feared that the personal security detail had already been sacrificed.

"And to think, we weren’t even here at the time."

Someone spoke in a low, heavy voice, their tone incredibly complex.

It was impossible to tell if they were relieved to have dodged the security assignment and escaped disaster, or if they were mourning the tragic sacrifices of their fellow members.

The atmosphere fell silent for a moment. They finally crossed the police tape and spoke with some of the captains on site.

The more they learned, the more horrified they became. Someone glanced over and saw that the Superpower Team leader who had been in charge of the motorcade was severely injured. Two gashes on his chest were so deep the bone was visible, and he was currently receiving treatment by an ambulance.

The bald Martial Artist from the City Lord’s Mansion was also inside an ambulance and hadn’t emerged, suggesting his injuries were just as severe. Many patrol team members had also been killed.

THUMP. THUMP.

Then, as they waited with heavy hearts and anxious anticipation...

A group of figures emerged from the winding alleyway of the ring-shaped building.

The two Superpower Level users in the lead were the first reinforcements to arrive: Li Junyi, the branch chief of the Exploration Level, and their team leader, Li Xiyuan.

Both men wore grim, expressionless faces, silently clearing a path while remaining on high alert.

And behind them...

A group of special commissioners walked out slowly, most of them pale and filled with the complex emotions of having survived a disaster.

Further back...

...were the surviving Superpower Members, supporting one another as they emerged from the deadly storm.

Some were badly injured, and others were even unconscious.

But the number of casualties was less than half of what they had imagined.

The reason for this could be seen behind them.

Covered in blood, Lu Chao and Yao Jin brought up the rear, walking out slowly, each carrying a wounded comrade on their back.

Their steps were heavy yet resolute and strong, carrying them out of the dark alley.

...

WHIRRR!!

The hover car’s engines hummed, its air currents buffeting the area as it landed in the center of the block.

The special commissioners of the inspection team walked over quickly, preparing to leave the Hive District for the time being.

But unlike the other commissioners, who were terrified yet relieved...

Luo Xuan, wearing a new, clean black woolen coat, her shoulder-length hair draped behind her, fluttered gently in the wash from the engines.

Her lightly made-up face, which looked to be around forty, was somewhat pale, but she appeared remarkably calm, deeply suppressing the complex emotions within her throughout the ordeal.

"You two."

Reaching the cabin door, she didn’t rush to get in.

Instead, to the surprise of many, she turned to face Lu Chao and Yao Jin, who had escorted her to the very end. Her gaze swept over the wounded and the fallen, taking it all in.

"Thank you."

She took the initiative and bowed, her eyes rimmed with red.

The commissioners behind her followed her lead, and the world seemed to fall silent in that moment.

Finally, they watched as the commissioners, escorted by Li Junyi and his team, departed in the hover car.

Lu Chao stood there in silence, a new black windbreaker draped over his shoulders.

At his side, Yao Jin and the other surviving members wore the same expression, gazing up as the hover car flew away. Only then did they feel a certain pressure lift from their shoulders.

"A lot of the brothers on guard duty outside were killed."

Lu Chao’s voice broke the silence. He glanced from side to side, keenly aware of the faces that were now permanently gone.

Although the fighting inside the ring-shaped building complex had been more intense, the number of casualties was significantly lower.

In contrast, the area around the motorcade had been the scene of a far greater tragedy.

Of the security team of more than thirty, only half were still on the scene. Many of them were so severely injured that they would likely need to rely on bionic organs for the rest of their lives.

It was only at this moment that he truly understood why the Superpower Bureau’s missions were so dangerous and why they were always recruiting.

The atmosphere fell silent once more.

A few breaths later.

"To be honest, from the day we joined the Superpower Bureau, we all prepared for the worst."

Pale-faced, Yao Jin coughed lightly, clearly injured.

Her black form-fitting combat suit was stained with blood. She waved her hand, signaling to the assistant and physician behind her not to worry.

"Protecting VIPs, guarding a region... This inspection team included many experts, including Secretary Luo, who are special personnel with extensive experience, having participated in many city-circle integrations."

"I don’t mean that our lives are less important than those of the experts and Special Commissioner Luo, but rather..."

Her voice was soft. She, too, saw some of her own team members being carried away under white sheets.

"Their contributions all carry weight. Their sacrifices will not be forgotten."

"At the very least, in their final moments, they made their own choices. What we can do is respect their decisions and carry on the legacy of their contributions."

She spoke softly, her tone a mixture of consolation and remembrance, laced with sorrow and admiration.

Lu Chao looked thoughtful. Behind him, Chen Xiao, Fang Xu, and the others felt that something had changed within them, though they couldn’t put it into words.

Then, supporting one another, they were directed by Lu Chao and Yao Jin to go for a medical examination.

The surviving security team dispersed for a time, and the two Superpower Team leaders walked over to an ambulance.

"Thanks."

Lu Chao took the bottle of restorative Nutrient Liquid from a logistical Pharmacist, twisted off the cap, and chugged a large mouthful. The weakness and exhaustion in his body eased slightly.

Then, he turned his head to look at Yao Jin. Her face was pale and her aura was weak, but it was gradually stabilizing. He asked about her injuries.

"I’m fine. It’s just a side effect of my Secret Technique. I’ll be okay after some rest."

She shook her head gently, cradling her silver longsword to her chest as she accepted her own Nutrient Liquid and took a few sips.

"I see."

Thoughtfully, Lu Chao roughly understood her situation. It was just like his own Thunder Extreme Secret Skill and [Adrenaline Rush]—they both had similar side effects that required ample rest to recover from.

As they chatted idly,

"You don’t understand, do you?"

Yao Jin asked suddenly, looking at him.

Lu Chao was confused, but then she looked at the wounded and said, "In terms of Life Energy development, Secretary Luo and the other experts are just ordinary people."

"And yet, we so-called Superpower Level users, along with other elite geniuses, are willing to stand in front of these commissioners, with many even paying the ultimate price."

Oh?

Lu Chao caught her meaning, guessing she thought he was overthinking things.

He didn’t explain himself, as he did indeed have similar doubts. He simply listened as she continued with a sigh, "Actually, I used to be confused about it too."

"Superpower Level users are already extraordinary, a class apart from ordinary humans. Why should we have to protect them? Some elite geniuses have incredible potential, so why would they willingly sacrifice themselves?"

"It wasn’t until later, during my time at the training camp, that I saw a quote—a quote left behind by a hero of the stars, Senior Robert."

"What was it?" Lu Chao asked, his curiosity piqued.

"Superpower Users are the spear and shield of a civilization."

Yao Jin took a sip of Nutrient Liquid, glancing at the glowing grid on the bedrock below and the bustling figures all around them.

Lu Chao was slightly taken aback, then he watched as she added, "But."

"A strong civilization cannot be built on spears and shields alone."

His heart stirred, and Lu Chao repeated her words in a murmur.

It was true. Superpower Users largely represented the upper limit of individual might. They could shatter steel with their fists, tear apart alloys with their bare hands, and withstand artillery fire.

Whether in power struggles or on the battlefield, they could exert enormous force and influence the outcome of any situation. The "spear and shield" analogy was incredibly fitting.

However.

He followed Yao Jin’s gaze, sweeping his eyes over the crowd.

The busy physicians, the hackers retrieving communications data, the logistics personnel cleaning up the scene... His gaze drifted further, to the office workers discussing the incident with lingering fear, and the children whose eyes were covered by adults—children who represented the hope for the future.

Most of them were ordinary people who lacked the talent for Life Energy development.

But it was this group that formed the majority of the world, the true foundation of Earth Star’s civilization.

Human society wasn’t just made up of Superpower Users.

The vast majority of ordinary people formed the bedrock of civilization and created the environmental foundation that made Life Energy development possible in the first place.

The gathering of raw nutrient resources, the complex refinement of steel and alloys, the design and production of weapons of war, the maintenance of social order... all of this was impossible without the participation of the vast majority of ordinary humans.

They also possessed a variety of social skills, just not in combat. Some might focus on command and management, while others might specialize in a certain professional trade.

’Just like me. If I were asked to manage a city-circle or command a war, I wouldn’t necessarily be any better at it than anyone else.’

"I see now."

In a daze, Lu Chao began to understand.

If he were a lone wolf, the word "civilization" might not mean much to him.

But at this moment, at least, he felt a new weight in his heart.

’Perhaps this is the difference between the Alliance Country and most of the Wilderness Warlords,’

Lu Chao thought to himself, then said no more.

The two of them held their position, overseeing the final cleanup of the scene.

They didn’t leave until a new Superpower Team leader arrived to relieve them.
