Stars dance through his vision, numbing the sensation as concrete crumbles like styrofoam as he cannonballs through it on his flight. It only ends when he hits an unyielding surface and flattens against it, before gravity reasserts itself and he falls back to the floor. He flinches as he lands, trying to protect his face. But as he lies there, shaking off cobwebs and trying to make the room stop spinning, he realizes the fall didn’t hurt at all.
Ha, no fall damage. Just brain damage. Oww…
He hears a roar and a whistling rush, his hearing precise even while punchdrunk. Laboriously he climbs to his feet. The monster is coming back.
The doctor… I can't remember her name now. Injected the thingy. Blockbuster. Docbuster. Man, I might be concussed.
Shakily he squares up as she lands in an animalistic crouch, snorting like a bull as her red eyes lock on him. She roars again, a sound no human throat could make. He doubts she could even still speak. Dr. Frankenstein has BECOME the monster this time. He snarls back, his own rage rising. She tried to enslave him, made him fight superheroes who were trying to help him! Images of her casual cruelty to the genomorphs filter through, the dregs of what Dubbilex shared that remain.
Docbuster pounces, low and with her massive arms spread wide. He meets her charge with his own and both of them clash with a clap of thunder. Fists fly recklessly; her too overcome by bestial rage and he too unschooled to do anything but stand and throw. Her blows rain down on his head and shoulders, and he forces himself forward to get within her reach and deliver body blows that would shatter boulders and pulverize a semi truck. He trusts his invulnerability to carry him through, but he is quickly proven wrong. Massive grey fists rock him back and make the stars burst behind his eyes again and again. Hunching his shoulders he tries to duck blows but she is far too fast, and he has no experience of his own.
Fight strategies and moves pour out of the mind palace’s rooms, these ones dojos full of martial arts and armories stocked with weapons, but they are of little use. She’s overwhelming him, giving him no time to think and pick a strategy. Each blow drains him a little more, pain and fatigue slowing him, letting her wail on him more. She isn’t getting tired of it.
With nothing else to go on he seizes on a strategy and ducks a punch and shoots for her legs, trying for a takedown. She grunts as he impacts and slides back but before he can haul on her knees and take her down. Panther-quick, she seizes his waist and picks him up over her head like a toddler, and hurls him across the room. He closes his eyes preparing to go through another couple of walls but this time strong hands catch him instead.
“Got you!” Aqualass shouts as she lowers him to the floor. Kid Quick zips across the floor and begins running circuits around Docbuster, diving in to deliver lightning quick blows with all her momentum behind them. They do little to the savage creature but they do keep her distracted. Robin waits for a moment between Kid’s drive-by attacks to fire her taser weapon and sinks the barbed electrodes into the gap in Docbuster’s armored hide where the epidermis has split from her instant growth. WIth a crackle and a shriek, the circuit closes and she spasms with lightning crackling across her body.
“Damn, that looks like it works.” The Superboy comments as Robin grins, seeing the effect her weapon is having. But after a few seconds, the whine of the weapon quiets as he hears the capacitors discharge the last of their power. With a shake, Docbuster regains control and snarls, grabbing at the wires. Robin’s eyes widen but this time she lets go before she can be dragged in. Clearly, she has learned from her fight with Superboy. Docbuster hurls the now useless weapon away and stalks forward.
“Got any more of those?” Kid Quick asks as she renews her stinging assault.
“Fresh out!” Robin shouts, hurling a handful of birderangs that do nothing more than distract the monster from her pursuit of Kid Quick.
“Don’t you do lightning, too?” Superboy asks as Aqualass steadies him on his feet.
“Yes, but my tattoos require time to recharge as well. You absorbed a great deal of my available energies earlier.” She says as she draws her water weapons, forming a shield and mace this time. Throwing herself at Docbuster, she dances around the brute, making it pay with strikes from the mace and deflecting brutal blows with the shield.
“Damn… wait, heat vision!” Superboy narrows his eyes and glares at his foe, but she steadfastly refuses to be struck by coherent beams of heat.
“Aw come on! Superman makes it look easy! Forget it, back to punching… cuz it worked so well so far.” He says as he follows behind Aqualass, hurrying as Docbuster grabs her around her mace wielding arm and slams her up against a pillar. The villain uses the position to hammer rapid fire punches with her free arm, which Aqualass struggles to deflect with the water shield.
Kid Quick beats him to the punch, running up and down Docbuster’s bulk to rain blows that she reacts to as if they were mosquito bites. She swats at Kid ineffectually as the speedster retreats out of range with a mocking laugh, which relieves the pressure on Aqualass. The Atlantean wiggles her trapped arm to the point she can bring her hilts together and forms a half dome of water with both around herself. This gets Docbuster’s renewed attention as she hammers at it with renewed fury with her free hand, the other still locked onto Aqualass and holding her in place. The shield ripples with every strike, the glow fading with each one.
But that buys Superboy the time to rejoin the fray, and he delivers a brutal kidney punch to the brute’s back. She howls and stumbles with the blow, loosening her grip enough that Aqualass and her water shield literally slip out of her grip, flowing like a tidal wave down and away. Docbuster roars in rage at the escape and hurls a knee at Superboy’s head. He barely manages to block it but it drives him back. Kid Quick takes the opportunity to race in for a blow of her own as Docbuster shows her back.
Unfortunately for the speedster, its a feint as this time her attack is intercepted by a rattle snake grab around the wrist. Kid makes a surprised noise as she is whipped into the air and spun around like a rally towel at a sports game before being hurled away into another pillar. She goes down hard, and struggles to rise.
Superboy leaps on her back, trying to get an arm around her massive neck but can’t manage it. He settles for punching directly at her eyes while her massive paws reach back to scratch and grab at him, tearing his solar suit in the process.
Aww, I liked this suit. This doesn’t happen to Superman that much.
“Superboy, close your eyes!” Robin shouts as she hurls a fistful of metal spheres, and he obeys, ducking his head behind Docbuster’s much larger but emptier one. Each of the spheres bursts into a blinding sun and with a crackling boom, blinding the creature and deafening Superboy momentarily. He gamely clings on, even as Docbuster thrashes and paws at his face. She whips back and forth, trying to shake him even in her blindness.
Then she leaps up and he has a sudden feeling of deja vu as his own move against Aqualass is repeated on him, only with much more velocity. It only takes one bone jarring impact against the ceiling for him to lose his grip. They are falling back down in mid air when she seizes his ankle and whips him at Aqualass like a missile. This time the two young heroes go down in a tangled heap. Robin hurls explosive birderangs that burst in blossoms of flame and shrapnel, which only slows Docbuster, as the Girl Wonder rushes to check on the fallen Kid Quick.
Superboy gets up on his hands and knees, and realizes his hand is on something warm and yielding. Looking down he sees Aqualass on her back looking back up at him quizzically as he blindly gropes at her breast. Hopping back with hands up in surrender he stammers.
“Sorry! I didn’t-” He gets out before she cuts him off.
“Not the time.” She says curtly while she snaps her hilts together into a single shaft, and forms a trident with it. The undulating black tattoos across her arms catch his eye again, as does the sparking power line revealed in the crumbled pillar that the villain had been pounding her against.
“Hey, you said you can’t zap her again cuz your battery is low, right?” Superboy asks as a plan begins to form in his head.
“It is not a battery, it is the mystic connection with the storm… Yes, it is at a low tide.” Aqualass replies with a little frustration.
“Gotcha. But can you still manipulate electricity that you DIDN’T generate?” As he asks it, he points to the sparking power cable, writhing like a snake and spitting sparks.
Aqualass’ eyes widen as she realizes what he means.
“Yes, I can, but I require a conductor. Normally I use myself or my weapons, but any water will do. It will take me a moment as well, it is much harder to manipulate the storm outside my own body.” She strategizes, her attention sharpening.
“Right, so we need water and time. Let’s see about getting both. Robin!” Superboy shouts, getting the heroines’ attention as she bobs, weaves, slides and does backflips to avoid Docbuster’s hamhock fists. It is a ballet of violence but one solid blow from her opponent would pulverize a normal human.
“Little busy here!” She shouts annoyedly in response.
“This isn’t working! We have a plan, but it needs a little lubrication!” Superboy shouts, pointing towards the ceiling and the fire suppression sprinklers he can see in the gloom above, thanks to his supervision. Robin's head snaps up to see what he’s pointing at, and she grins. He’s glad to see she understands, as he doesn’t want to explain the plan in front of the enemy. Docbuster seems like a dumb brute but she keeps surprising them, like her brain cells are slowly firing back up after her transformation.
“I can handle that part! But you gotta tag in! Kid’s still woozy.” Robin snaps back.
“I’m fine! My wooziness is in the past tense. I’m woozed.” Kid retorts, unconvincingly as she is still leaning with one hand on a pillar across the room as she says it.
“That’s not how that works!” Robin bickers, again displaying her strange fascination with wordplay.
“Banter later, make with the trapeze thing now! Tag in!” He shouts as he rushes in. As he passes Robin and she grapnels up to the ceiling, he notices a sharp look at him when she zips by.
Ah crap. I’m not supposed to know that. Deal with it later. Rage monster now!
Feet pounding he charges Docbuster and hurls an uppercut that she slips. He is punished for it with a right cross that makes his ribs creak and he slides back a few feet with the force of the blow. Superboy finds himself back where he started this fight, being overwhelmed by Docbuster’s speed, strength and ferocity. This time he turtles up, putting his arms up in what his dad called the shell guard when they watched old boxing matches together. It frames his head, but it mostly means her massive fists smash his own hands into his head like a billiard ball chain reaction.
But actual superheroes are fighting for their lives, with him, and its the most amazing thing he’s ever done. It just means he has to keep this brute’s attention on him long enough for Robin and Aqualass to create the world’s biggest workplace safety violation.
Ha, I hope OSHA throws the book at you, Desmond!
That thought is ironically ended as she throws a hand with a palm the size of the Yellow Pages at him, rocking him back again and eliciting a grunt. There is little he can do as she follows up with more, spittle flying from her snarling maw as drives him back, blow after blow falling like a hard rain. Bruises pile upon themselves, but he digs deep and hangs on. He can hear metallic tinks as Robin throws more birderangs to knock the sprinkler heads off, each bringing a spitting deluge that quickly soaks the ground. He even hears the whine of the electricity change, dropping in pitch but still present, like its a snake waiting to strike and Aqualass is its snake charmer. Kid Quick rallies and the pitter patter of her feet in the puddled water a warning of her approach.
Superboy can see Docbuster tense as the sound approaches, no doubt preparing another ambush for the Kid. He refuses to let her take the hit and drops his guard with a shout and a wild punch. It doesn’t land but he doesn’t intend it to; but it refocuses Docbuster’s wrath on himself. He’s punished for it with a punch to the gut that doubles him over, followed by a jab that snaps his head back and sends him stumbling back into the rain of filthy water from the sprinklers. Its rust red and stinking as he stumbles in the puddle, and he can taste blood in his mouth. His breathing is heavy and doesn’t come easy as he sways.
Docbuster snarls and turns away, dismissing him and turning to go after Kid Quick. Incensed, he seizes up a piece of rubble and whips at her like a fastball. He’s surprised both at the speed and the accuracy, the fist sized chunk bursting into dust as it impacts the back of her head. His dad would have been real proud of that pitch; he never managed anything like that in his old life.
Slowly, Docbuster turns around to stare into his eyes, her crimson orbs igniting in incandescent fury at the thrown rock. Her breath steams in the frigid falling water as it sluices off her face.
“Where ya going, doc? I ain’t hear no bell!” He yells defiantly as he puts his fists up again, hoping his allies have had the time they need.
Docbuster’s answer is to roar and charge, her massive feet pounding the floor thunderously and sending plumes of water up with each elephantine step. She gets up a good head of speed and he braces his guard, but she surprises him with a punt, kicking him up into the ceiling again. Everything goes dark briefly, and then the world swims back into focus as its filled with stinking, filthy, cold sprinkler water. He spits out a mouthful and sits up, head swimming with the blow still.
Maybe taunting her wasn’t a good idea. He reflects, groaning as Docbuster starts pounding towards him again. Superboy struggles to get his feet underneath him. He manages one knee but as he tries to straighten up, he wobbles and has to catch himself on his hands. Docbuster is terrifyingly close, and he can’t seem to stand to meet her.
This is gonna hurt…
But as he winces, bracing for the blow to come, a dark blue and black blur with a golden head slide tackles Docbuster’s legs out from under her, doing a spraying baseball slide in the pooling water and tripping the massive brute. She goes ass over tea kettle and smashes into the wall with a crash that shakes the whole room.
“Come on, kid, get up!” Guardian shouts in his face, her golden helmet reflected a couple of times in what he realizes is double vision. He only stares at her dumbly as he looks at her outstretched hand.
Supervision is way better than double vision, is his thought as he numbly reaches for Guardian’s gauntleted hand and rises to his feet.
To his consternation, Docbuster is already back on hers, her fury only growing at the sight of him, unsmashed. She roars again, so loud everyone winces or covers their ears.
“Now would be a good time, Kaldura!” Kid Quick yells from behind a pillar.
“Yes, it would be…” Aqualass says calmly, her eyes closed, as her left arm makes circling gestures, and the water pooling around their feet recedes like a low tide and forms a single undulating tentacle that whips across the room to slap Docbuster down into the ground with a resounding crash. At the same time, her right arm undulates like a serpent, the tattoo on her arm glowing again and the electricity leaps from the broken power cable at her feet and strikes at the water tentacle like a snake. The sight of her superlative calm and control, not to mention the beauty of her powers, takes his breath away. The tattoo is not just a black swirl down her limbs; there is fine detail in it. Scales and finned serpentine bodies; eels represented in an abstract way, but beautiful when he is looking for them.
Docbuster is trying to rise under the weight of the water pressing down on her, but then the electric eel that Aqualass has seemingly conjured out of the power cable hits the water tentacle and the entire thing glows like a fireworks display. Everyone looks away as the electricity of what seems like the whole building dumps itself into the water and grounds through Docbuster. For an instant he can swear he sees her skeleton outlined inside of her, and the stench of ozone fills the air.
After what seems like minutes but must only be a second, the brilliant electric light fades and the spasming villain collapses under the weight of water pressure. She falls, and doesn’t rise again. Aqualass, seeing their triumph, dismisses her control and the water tentacle instantly discorporates. The tide rushes back across the room, soaking them up to the ankles. She sags, the difficulty of her power use clearly exhausting her. Instantly, Kid Quick is there and catches her before she can fall.
Robin glides down from the ceiling, her cape gone rigid like a kite and feathered at the edges as she descends. Alighting, her cape returns to its normal shape, the feathered edges disappearing, and the young man known as Superboy can only squee inside a little at the sight.
It is a helpful distraction from the aches and pains from the battle. While he fulfilled an important role, he decides he dislikes being the tank. Either he doesn’t have the full measure of Kryptonian invulnerability, or being invulnerable is a lot more painful than anyone lets on. He casts a glance at Guardian, suspicious of her intentions now that Desmond is defeated.
She catches his look, and frowns.
“Look, things at Cadmus aren’t how I thought they were. Or how Desmond was MAKING me think they were. She was way out of line.” Guardian states emphatically, and he can see genuine anger in her at the mention of Dr. Desmond, who is currently smoking but alive in the corner.
“Riiight. I think we need to have a talk later about what exactly the ‘line’ is here at Cadmus.” Superboy replies, darkly.
This is familiar; I remember that Cadmus made Superboy, but they are some spooky secret squirrel types. I don’t remember a lot of the rest of this. Dunno which Robin this is, or which Flash or Quick, or if there is supposed to be an Aqualass. Guardian I recognize, but again, not a Guardian whose a chick.
“Well, I call that a successful first mission as full Guild members, wouldn’t you two?” Kid Quick says to her companions, sounding very pleased with herself as the five come together to stand over the fallen monster.
“I can only hope Queen Ora agrees with that assessment.” Aqualass states, a hint of trepidation in her voice.
“Ah, they were practically begging us to go off on our own. Its probably a whole apprentice to journeywoman thing in the guild. They tell you to sit tight, but when duty calls they wanna see if you’ll step up! Heroes don’t wait for permission to save the day. They’ll probably give us a commendation.” Kid continues her rosy tinted view of the events, which makes even Superboy smile.
They all jump at the crash of stone from above as a hole is punched through the ceiling and a red, blue and golden yellow figure emerges from the dust cloud. Superboy recognizes it from the intel files stored in his mind palace, Cadmus rundowns on each hero trickling through his mind as they enter the cavernous room, looking ready for a fight but surprised not to find one.
Floating before him is the image that has dominated so many of his days and dreams. A powerful figure, surprisingly feminine but still exuding power, authority and trust. A billowing red cape, a bright blue bodysuit, and the gleaming yellow gold of the S shield known across time, space and universes. Her hair is a short bob, silky black, and bright blue eyes stare down at him with a questioning look, one eyebrow raised. Her hands are on her hips as she floats in place, feet flat like she was standing on an invisible platform.
He is awestruck to be in her presence. She is not quite like he imagined, but so is everything in this place, but she is every bit as impressive as he thought she might be.
The other members of this Justice Guild are familiar but surprising.
At their head, riding down a wave of water in green and orange scaled armor and wielding the Trident of Poseidon is Aquawoman. Her blond hair is bound in an odd fauxhawk and she stands with an easy air of command.
The Batwoman slinks from the shadows, unclear how she entered as it wasn’t though the hole Superwoman made for them. A grey bodysuit, a midnight blue cape and cowl, gloves and boots, and a matte yellow utility belt. Her lips are painted black, and her mask seems like it's permanently made to scowl. She may be the fittest human being he’s ever seen. He’s not sure if its the mythmaking or reality, but the way she stalks and stares is genuinely frightening.
Beside her is a woman he would be surprised by if not for the intel packets; a dark haired woman with tan skin, a violet jeweled diadem in the forehead of her mask, and a flared collared bodysuit in the same violet color that hugs her impressive figure. She carries several others down on an energy construct platform that looks like an airport airstairs. That can only be Star Sapphire.
The bright pink airstairs ferry three others, a blonde woman in a unitard, leggings and a leather jacket, the Black Canary. Next to her is a debonair man in a black three piece lounge suit that glitters like it contains the night sky, over a wide collared white shirt that’s deeply unbuttoned. He wears his hair slicked back and a pencil mustache; everything about him screams “stage magician” but of the David Copperfield era. Zatarra, then. The other man on the airstairs he instantly recognizes; the bow and Dick Van Dyke beard can’t be anyone else. But this Green Arrow looks more like Robin Hood than any version he’s seen; the classic hat but with an enormous feather, a pleated and embroidered green tunic over tights, and swashbuckler boots in the same shade. The quiver on his back speaks to his preparedness, as does the bow in hand, already knocked and drawn.
Speeding down the hole in a red and gold tinged blur is Jesse Quick, the Fastest Woman alive. She wears a Flash suit, but with the crown of her head exposed so her impressively long and lustrous hair can flow. He can see the resemblance to Kid Quick in the hair, a vibrant redhead like her niece.
The Martian Manhunter is a surprise, because she simply phases through the wall and is suddenly there in front of them all. Her green skin is strangely textured, and she has a white mohawk that is braided. She wears red pants, and a red X shaped top that covers her bust, capped with gold attachments that holds her voluminous high collared blue cape, matched in color by her elbow length gloves and turned down boots.
As awestruck as he is by Superwoman, and shocked by how viscerally real and spooky Batwoman is, only one of their number is a literal goddess. And her very presence screams it. She is the tallest of them, a statuesque 6’, 6”, and every feature and proportion is, in a word, perfect. Her every curve and muscle looks carved from purest marble, but her skin is a swarthy and sun tanned olive that perfectly suits her lustrous black curls, head back by her gold headband. Her bustier armor is there in red and gold, with stars of silver plating blue leather strips like an armored skirt, pteruges he thinks the Greeks called them. The glowing lasso is at her hip, one hand resting on it. She wears beautiful gold threaded sandals, and they have wings on them that flutter like they’re alive. Her shins are protected by silver greaves that match the bracelets on her arms. Her eyes pierce him like spears from heaven, and he cannot look away from her.
She is staring at him, a literal goddess descended to Earth, and she is deigning to look at him. He begins to flush just at the idea of her noticing him, but there is both warmth and interest in her eyes, and it makes his heart flutter. It is a struggle to tear his eyes away from her as he hears the Batwoman speak in a terse command, directed at her sidekick but also the rest of them.
“Talk fast.”
