Harven made Mira sit on the treatment table while he inspected the damage from the fight outside the north gate.
Her robe had been cut open along one side so he could reach the ribs beneath it. Two had fractured during the elite slime's attack, and another had shifted far enough that its lower end no longer aligned properly with the rest of her chest. The splint around her left forearm had survived, although the binding had loosened when she hit the road.
Elaine stood nearby while Harven reset the ribs by hand.
Mira watched him work through the lower edge of her glasses.
Pain in her skeletal body remained strange. She felt pressure, displacement and the deeply unpleasant awareness that something sat where it should not, but the sensations did not always carry the urgency she remembered from ordinary injuries. A broken rib could feel wrong without hurting enough to make her instinctively protect it.
Harven pressed the last one back into alignment and secured a broad wrap around her torso.
"Try moving."
Mira rotated carefully at the waist.
The arrangement held.
She lifted her splinted arm next and found that the forearm remained stable.
Minor Heal gathered faintly around her fingers as she considered the fracture.
Harven noticed the light.
"The bone hasn't responded yet."
Mira let the spell fade.
She had changed how much of Minor Heal she used and where she placed it. Neither had solved the more important problem of what the spell expected to find inside her.
There was little reason to spend Essence on another identical failure.
Harven tightened the final section of wrapping and moved to the end of the table.
Her missing left foot required less attention. The ankle joint remained intact, the bones simply ending where the slime had carried everything beyond them away. He checked the leather padding around the end of her leg and replaced one strip worn thin during the fighting.
"You can travel if the guild insists on taking you," he said, "but you should not treat this body as indestructible simply because it warns you differently."
"I haven't."
Harven looked toward the ribs he had just put back into place.
Mira looked somewhere else.
Elaine rescued her by placing a folded bundle on the table.
"Tessa sent these."
Inside were several strips of reinforced leather, a replacement glove and a short loop intended for Mira's spear. The loop could fasten around her wrist, preventing the weapon from falling completely away if her grip failed.
The replacement glove did not match the other one.
It was slightly thicker across the palm and carried a narrow ivory line around the cuff.
Mira ran her thumb across the stitching.
"She repaired this already?"
"Apparently watching you dissolve a new pair of gloves offended her professionally."
Mira put it on.
The fit was excellent.
The whispertail cub lifted its head from inside her scarf, sniffed the new leather and quickly concluded that it was not food.
Harven looked at the cub.
Then at Mira.
"I assume asking you to leave that here would accomplish nothing."
"It would accomplish asking."
Elaine covered her mouth.
Mira suspected a cough had not caused the movement.
She adjusted her scarf around the cub and climbed down from the treatment table.
The spear took her weight as soon as her right foot touched the floor.
Harven watched her cross the room once before finally allowing her to leave.
The guild had already assembled a rescue party outside.
Kael stood near the temple steps with his enormous sword strapped across his back. Someone had given him a cleaner outer layer to replace the clothing Mira had burned during their fight, but the new garment still looked borrowed. White fabric crossed a dark undershirt, with silver-grey wraps around his forearms and waist.
He had also acquired food.
Mira discovered this because he was eating while the guild officer explained how they intended to rescue two people trapped underground.
The officer pointed toward a rough map spread across a barrel.
"Main quarry entrance stays closed. Too many slimes near the upper tunnels, and we don't know whether the collapse is stable. Kael says the drainage channel reaches the lower workings behind the eastern ridge."
Kael swallowed.
"It does. The entrance is narrow for maybe fifty metres, then it opens up. I came through there this morning."
Elaine studied the map.
"How deep were you?"
"Deep enough to hear something moving underneath me."
Several people looked at him.
Kael lowered the food slightly.
"I didn't investigate. The tunnel split, and the left passage had running water. Most of the slimes were gathering near it, so I took the dry route."
Mira examined the waterways marked across the old quarry plan.
The underground stream crossed beneath several extraction chambers before eventually reaching the drainage system. If water helped the slimes reproduce, killing whatever wandered toward Eastmere would never solve the source.
The rescue group was assigned quickly.
Elaine would handle healing. Bran had been ordered to remain inside Eastmere, so another hunter named Oren replaced him. He carried a short bow and a heavy wood axe suited to the confined tunnels.
Garrick, the shield-bearer from the previous expedition, returned after treatment.
Kael joined because he knew the drainage route.
Mira joined because she had spent more time examining the strange slime material than anyone else available.
Nobody appeared entirely comfortable with that final decision.
Oren's attention lingered on Mira several times while they prepared. He said nothing openly hostile, but his hand settled near the axe whenever the whispertail moved beneath her scarf. Two guards near the temple entrance also gave Mira a considerably wider path than everyone else.
She had grown accustomed to people looking.
She had not begun liking it.
The party left through the eastern gate rather than following the quarry road.
The route climbed gradually through fields before entering woodland. Kael walked near the front with Oren, while Mira travelled behind them with Elaine and Garrick.
Uphill ground exposed every weakness in Mira's improvised gait.
She planted the spear, transferred her weight, stepped with her right foot and brought the shortened left leg forward. On level ground the movement had become reasonably efficient. Steeper soil forced her to use the shaft as both a support and lever.
She fell once.
Kael heard her hit the ground and looked back.
Mira was already pushing herself upright.
He waited until she caught up rather than offering to carry her.
She appreciated that.
The eastern ridge appeared through the trees after nearly an hour.
Signs of displaced whispertails became more common as they approached. Bark had been stripped from several trunks, while tracks crossed repeatedly through the undergrowth, almost all heading away from the quarry. They found part of an abandoned den beneath a rocky shelf, containing only old fur and several bones.
The cub became restless inside Mira's scarf.
Its nose emerged first.
Then its ears.
Mira stroked the fur between them.
"We aren't staying."
The cub stared toward the ridge.
Its five tails remained hidden.
Kael crouched beside a patch of disturbed earth farther ahead.
"There were slimes here."
Oren moved closer.
"How can you tell?"
Kael pointed toward several shallow depressions in the damp soil. Each had a rounded centre surrounded by irregular splashes.
"They landed here and changed direction. Three, I think."
Mira examined the marks.
The trail continued north.
"You can track slimes from that?"
"Sometimes. Wet ground helps."
Oren looked at him.
"You've done this before?"
"In games."
Oren clearly had no idea what that meant.
They followed the ridge until the ground dipped toward a narrow stone channel filled with ankle-deep water.
The drainage entrance had once been reinforced with timber. Most of the frame had rotted away, leaving only dark posts trapped between the rocks.
Kael drew his greatsword.
The passage was too narrow to carry it comfortably across his shoulder, so he angled the blade behind him.
"There were two slimes near the first bend earlier. Probably more now."
Oren nocked an arrow.
Garrick raised his replacement shield.
Mira looked at the water.
"Don't use Essence unless we need it. If they're still reacting the way they did outside Eastmere, casting will bring anything nearby toward us."
Elaine nodded.
"I'll hold healing until it's necessary."
Kael looked down at the stream.
Something faint moved along the black centre of his sword.
Mira thought sunlight had caught the metal until white mist curled from the edge.
A thin skin of frost spread along the blade.
Oren noticed too.
"You can do that?"
Kael looked at the water.
"I can do something else too. I'm not using it while we're standing in a stream."
Mira looked at him.
"What else?"
Kael smiled.
"You'll see."
Mira disliked the answer almost as much as she disliked the water.
They entered the channel.
She disliked that immediately too.
Water covered her right boot and splashed against the padded end of her left leg whenever she misplaced the spear. The cub retreated completely beneath her scarf.
Kael found the first slime before it found them.
He stopped at a bend and raised one hand.
A translucent shape rested against the stone ahead, nearly invisible beneath the water running over its body.
Oren shifted for a clear shot.
Kael shook his head and moved forward.
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from NovelPhoenix. Please report it.
The slime reacted.
It sprang from the wall.
Kael turned the greatsword.
The flat struck first.
The slime hit the opposite rock and spread across it.
Then the frost covering the sword touched its body.
White raced through the translucent gel.
The slime's movement slowed.
Its outer body stiffened around the edges.
Kael stepped in and struck again.
This time the core could not drift away quickly enough.
The broad blade drove it against the wall.
The bead shattered.
Frozen pieces of gel dropped into the stream.
Mira looked at them.
They were not flowing back together.
Kael had already moved toward the remains.
"Dry ground," Mira said.
Garrick used his shield to scoop the frozen material out of the stream.
The second slime attacked while he was doing it.
Oren's arrow entered the creature and slowed inside the gel without reaching its core.
The slime bounced toward him.
Mira moved forward on the spear.
Her missing foot prevented a quick sideways step, so she used the weapon instead. The padded end swept across the slime before it reached Oren.
The body changed direction and struck the wall.
Kael's frost-covered greatsword came down broadside.
The slime compressed.
Its surface whitened.
The core slowed.
Kael struck it again.
The bead broke.
Oren retrieved what remained of his arrow.
"I understand the problem with shooting them now."
Mira looked at the shaft suspended in the gel.
"It might work if the arrow reaches the core before the body slows it."
Oren tested the wood.
Already softening.
"I'll use the axe."
Kael shook some frozen slime from his blade.
The frost remained.
Mira watched the white layer gathering more heavily near the edge rather than covering the entire weapon equally.
"You can choose where it forms."
Kael glanced toward his sword.
"Mostly."
Then he continued walking.
Mira looked at the blade for another moment before following.
The channel narrowed before opening into a stone corridor.
Old iron rails ran through its centre, half buried beneath sediment. Broken carts rested against one wall. Mineral stains covered the ceiling where water had seeped through cracks for years.
Kael stopped at the first junction.
"This is where I came from."
He pointed right.
"That passage climbs toward the ruins."
Then left.
"The water gets deeper that way."
Mira crouched beside the stream.
Dark residue clung to stone beneath the surface.
She touched it with the metal tip of the spear.
The gel pulled toward the weapon.
Still active.
"We stay away from the water wherever we can."
Garrick looked into the flooded passage.
"Derris and Sera were trapped beneath the western workings. The old map puts them beyond the stream."
Mira stood.
"Then we'll cross when we have to."
They followed dry stone as far as possible.
The quarry was much larger than Mira had expected.
Some tunnels had ceilings low enough that Kael's sword nearly touched them. Others opened into enormous chambers supported by square columns intentionally left uncut during excavation.
Old equipment remained everywhere.
Rusted winches, rails, buckets and tools sat where workers had abandoned them years earlier.
Several walls contained narrow veins of dark stone that differed sharply from the surrounding grey rock.
Mira touched one with her glove.
The cub growled from beneath her scarf.
She withdrew her hand.
Kael noticed.
"Same as Bran's stone?"
"Very similar."
Elaine examined the vein without approaching.
"Those weren't here when the quarry was active."
Oren looked at her.
"How would you know?"
"My father worked here."
Mira looked toward her.
Elaine continued walking.
"The lower chambers flooded before I was born, but people still used the western workings until about twenty years ago. Nobody ever mentioned black veins running through the stone."
Mira looked back.
The surface appeared almost polished despite being embedded in rough rock.
She wanted a sample.
She also remembered producing a living slime inside the guildhall because she had added water to something she did not understand.
The rock could remain in the wall for now.
They found the first body in the next chamber.
A man lay beside an overturned cart.
His leather coat had partially dissolved, and one leg was missing below the knee. The remains were old enough that Elaine approached without gathering healing.
Oren recognized him as one of the missing trappers.
He closed the man's eyes.
Mira looked away.
She had watched things die since arriving in Aetheria.
Corin had nearly bled out beside the wagon. Goblins had died beneath her knife. Whispertails had been killed in Eastmere's market.
The trapper felt different.
There was no fight happening to occupy her attention now.
Nobody had reached him.
Kael stood several metres away.
His expression had changed too.
Neither of them spoke.
Oren removed a small carved tag from the man's belt.
"For his family."
They continued.
The next chamber contained six slimes.
Kael saw three.
Mira noticed the distortion moving across the ceiling.
"There."
Everyone looked up.
A translucent body clung to the stone.
Mira's attention moved toward an abandoned cart.
Something shifted beneath it.
"Two more under the cart."
Kael changed position immediately.
Garrick took the front beside him while Oren abandoned the bow and drew his axe. Mira remained near Elaine and watched the edges of the chamber.
The ceiling slime dropped.
Straight toward Garrick.
Blessing of Shelter formed before Mira finished raising her hand.
She did not cover his entire body.
Golden light curved over the shoulder, neck and side of his head directly beneath the descending slime.
The creature struck.
The barrier flashed.
Its body failed to close around Garrick's skull.
He threw it down.
Kael crushed the core with the frozen flat of his sword.
Another slime emerged beneath the cart.
Oren stepped backward.
Mira gathered Blessing again.
The creature was moving toward his left side.
The protection formed only there.
A curved plate of gold covered his forearm and part of his ribs.
The slime struck.
Oren stumbled.
The barrier held long enough for his axe to descend through the exposed core.
The light disappeared.
Mira felt considerably less Essence leave with it.
Elaine glanced toward the fading protection.
"You changed the shape."
Mira nodded.
The third slime came from the side.
Mira was already looking elsewhere.
"Kael."
He turned before she pointed.
The creature launched from behind a pillar.
Kael stepped into it.
The frost vanished from his sword.
For half a second the black centre of the blade looked unusually dark.
Then light moved across it.
Blue-white arcs snapped from the guard toward the point.
The sound inside the stone chamber was sharp enough that Mira felt it through her ribs.
Kael swung.
The greatsword struck the slime.
Lightning erupted through its body.
The translucent gel lit from within.
Its core jerked violently instead of drifting away from the impact.
Kael's blade continued through.
The bead shattered.
The remaining slime fell in smoking pieces.
Mira stared.
Kael looked toward her.
"That."
The last remnants of lightning crawled over the blade and disappeared.
Mira looked at the dead slime.
Then at the dry floor.
"So you weren't avoiding it because of the slimes."
"I was avoiding electrocuting all of us."
"Good."
Kael blinked.
"That's all?"
"What did you want?"
"I don't know. More."
Another slime bounced from beneath the cart.
Mira pointed.
"You missed one."
Kael turned.
The blade flashed with lightning again.
The slime did not survive long enough for him to complain.
They cleared the chamber.
Mira watched him shake residue from the greatsword.
Cold slowed the slime's body and restricted the core.
Lightning disrupted the whole thing at once.
Kael seemed to switch between them without much preparation.
She stored that away.
The party moved deeper.
The air changed first.
A metallic smell entered the tunnels.
Then came the sound.
Three heavy impacts echoed through the stone.
A pause followed.
Then three more.
Oren raised his axe.
"Derris?"
Garrick shouted his name.
The impacts stopped.
A distant voice answered.
"Here!"
They moved quickly.
The western tunnel had collapsed across most of its width. Broken stone formed a steep slope beneath a narrow opening near the ceiling.
Derris appeared above it.
His red robes were torn and grey with dust.
"Sera's hurt."
Elaine started climbing immediately.
Mira followed until the slope became too steep for her spear.
Kael handed his sword to Garrick.
He examined the rocks, then looked toward Mira's missing foot.
"I can pull you from the top."
Mira considered refusing.
The stone shifted beneath her right boot.
She reconsidered.
Kael climbed ahead and braced himself against the wall.
Mira planted the spear as high as she could, caught his arm and allowed him to take enough of her weight to get her across the worst section.
On the far side, Sera lay against the wall with a crude bandage around her thigh.
She was conscious.
That mattered most.
Elaine reached her first.
Derris looked exhausted.
"We blocked the large slime farther down, but it kept pushing through the rubble. Every spell I used brought more smaller ones."
"They're following Essence," Mira said.
Derris glanced toward her.
"I gathered that eventually."
Elaine removed Sera's bandage.
The wound beneath it was deep.
A piece of stone had entered her thigh during the collapse.
"She needs time."
Derris looked toward the tunnel behind them.
"We may not have much."
Something heavy struck the far side of the chamber.
Dust fell.
Kael retrieved his sword from Garrick.
"How big?"
Derris showed him.
Kael stopped smiling.
Another impact came.
One of the rocks sealing the passage shifted.
Dark gel pushed through the opening.
Mira moved closer.
Black threads ran through it.
The same structure as the elite outside Eastmere.
There was much more of it.
Garrick positioned himself beside the gap.
"We should leave while Elaine can move Sera."
Derris shook his head.
"The stream is behind that thing. If we retreat into the drainage tunnels and it follows, we're leading it directly toward Eastmere."
Mira looked at the gel forcing itself between the stones.
Then at the chamber walls.
Black mineral veins ran through several sections.
The slime gathered most heavily around them.
Gel touching the mineral was darker than the rest.
Mira approached the nearest vein.
The cub growled.
Loudly.
Kael looked over.
"Mira."
She stopped before touching it.
Whispertails had fled the quarry.
The cub feared Bran's stone.
The stronger slimes were concentrated around the same material.
A similar fragment had been embedded inside one of the dead whispertails.
Mira looked toward the creature pressing through the rubble.
"Whatever changed them started down here."
Derris followed her gaze.
"The mineral?"
"I don't know what it is."
Another impact shook the barrier.
The gap widened.
A section of slime pushed through and began rounding itself on their side.
Mira looked toward Elaine.
"How long?"
"Several minutes."
They did not have several minutes.
Kael shifted the greatsword into both hands.
Cold spread across the blade.
"I can keep it in the opening."
Mira looked at the narrow stream of gel.
"If you hit it, the core moves away from the pressure."
"We did that outside."
"The gap does the rest for us."
Kael looked toward the rubble.
Then he understood.
The creature could only move so much while forcing itself through a narrow opening.
Mira pointed.
"Garrick takes the left. Kael, right. Push it toward the middle."
Derris lifted his staff.
Mira looked at him.
"Wait for the core."
He lowered it.
The slime forced more mass through the rubble.
Garrick struck first.
His shield compressed the left side.
Kael answered from the right.
Frost covered the flat of his greatsword before impact.
The gel between them tightened.
White spread across its outer layer.
The core slowed.
A dark red bead appeared near the centre.
Mira thrust.
Her spearhead struck it.
A shallow crack formed.
The slime recoiled through the rubble.
Kael stepped back.
"It learns fast."
"So do we."
The next surge came lower.
Mira shifted position.
Garrick struck.
Kael followed.
This time he did not use frost.
Lightning crawled across the blade.
The strike hit from the right.
Blue-white light flashed through the dark gel.
The core spasmed upward.
Mira thrust.
Missed.
A tendril snapped through the opening and caught the spear.
The shaft jerked from her hand.
The wrist loop tightened.
Mira nearly went down.
Kael caught the spear with one hand.
Together they pulled.
The weapon tore free.
Its padded support cap remained inside the slime.
Mira stared at the bare wood.
Tessa had made that yesterday.
The slime pushed through again.
Mira's grip tightened.
"Of course."
Kael looked at the damaged spear.
Radiant Spark formed between Mira's fingers.
She compressed it immediately.
The narrow shape came much more readily now.
Kael's sword frosted over again.
Garrick raised his shield.
The creature pressed through.
They struck.
Left.
Right.
The core appeared.
Mira adjusted rather than firing immediately.
The bead moved upward.
She drove the spear into the gap.
Gold travelled along the shaft.
Radiant Spark released through the spearhead.
The narrow light struck the core.
A deep crack spread across it.
The slime convulsed.
Derris raised his staff.
Mira did not look away from the core.
"Now."
Green light erupted through the opening.
The spell struck before the slime could withdraw.
The bead shattered.
Dark gel collapsed through the rubble.
Water rushed after it.
For several seconds nobody moved.
Kael lowered his sword.
"That was the large one?"
Derris looked toward the stream.
"The one we saw."
Mira disliked the wording.
Elaine finished binding Sera's leg.
"We leave before another one finds us."
Nobody argued.
They gathered the wounded and began climbing back across the collapsed passage.
Mira remained behind long enough to examine what the destroyed slime had left among the stones.
A black-green core fragment rested inside a shallow depression.
Beside it lay a strip of unusually dense membrane and a small shard of the dark mineral.
Mira picked up the core.
Corrupted Slime Core Fragment
Quality: Rare
Item Level: 9
A fragment from a mature quarry slime altered by prolonged exposure to an unidentified mineral source. Retains unusually dense Essence channels.
She examined the membrane.
Dense Adaptive Membrane
Quality: Uncommon
Item Level: 8
A reinforced slime membrane capable of dispersing blunt force and resisting repeated deformation.
Mira looked at the mineral.
The cub growled loudly enough that Elaine heard it from across the chamber.
Mira did not touch the shard directly.
She wrapped it in leather and placed it inside a separate pouch.
Kael waited beside the rubble.
"You really do take everything."
"It's useful."
"You kept pieces of creatures that dissolved your clothes."
Mira secured the pouch.
"They can become better clothes."
Kael thought about that.
"Okay. That one makes sense."
Mira started climbing.
Together they crossed the collapsed tunnel.
The return journey took considerably longer.
Sera could not walk, so Garrick and Oren carried her in an improvised sling. Elaine remained close enough to monitor the wound. Derris conserved his Essence and used his staff for support.
Mira's own movements deteriorated gradually as the distance accumulated.
Her right leg had begun shaking by the time they reached the drainage corridor.
The first new slime appeared near the edge of the water.
Mira's shoulders lowered.
Kael looked at her.
"Mira."
She kept walking.
"It has made a decision."
The slime bounced toward them.
Mira stopped.
"So have I."
The cub climbed from her scarf and hissed.
Kael's greatsword whitened with frost.
The slime jumped.
Kael struck it sideways.
The body froze against the wall.
The cub sprang from Mira's shoulder, landed on the rigid gel and slapped both front paws against it before immediately jumping away.
The cracked core shifted toward the surface.
Mira drove the spear through it.
The slime collapsed.
The cub returned to her shoulder with all five tails raised.
Mira stroked its back.
"Good."
Kael looked between them.
"You're teaching it to hate slimes."
Mira continued walking.
"I haven't taught it anything."
The cub hissed at the remains behind them.
Kael laughed.
Mira ignored him.
They reached the drainage channel.
Kael's lightning did not appear again.
Frost gathered instead whenever another slime emerged near the water.
Mira noticed that he never needed reminding.
He could be reckless.
He was not careless.
They emerged from the quarry shortly before sunset.
The open sky felt better than Mira expected.
Several guild members waited beyond the trees.
Some rushed immediately toward the wounded.
Others stopped when they saw Mira.
A woman carrying medical supplies took one look at the skeleton emerging from the quarry beside the rescue group and instinctively moved behind a guard.
Elaine noticed.
She placed one hand briefly against Mira's shoulder before continuing toward the waiting healers.
Mira appreciated the gesture.
The guild officer arrived with the second group.
His attention went first to Sera and Derris.
Once he knew they were alive, he turned toward Mira.
"What did you find?"
Mira removed the leather-wrapped shard from her pouch.
"Something beneath the quarry is changing the slimes."
The cub growled the moment the package appeared.
The guild officer looked toward the ridge.
"Can you prove that?"
"Not yet."
Mira held out the wrapped shard.
"But the stronger slimes were concentrated around the same material, and the whispertail reacts to it before it touches anything."
Derris joined them.
"The veins are thickest in the lower chambers. She's right about that."
The officer accepted the package carefully.
Behind him, Eastmere's lights had begun appearing through the trees.
Mira looked back toward the quarry.
The rescue was finished.
The quarry was not.
Something had changed the creatures living beneath Eastmere, driven whispertails out of their territory and reached water that eventually flowed toward the town.
Mira wanted to know what it was.
She also wanted considerably fewer slimes involved in finding out.
