Chapter 15: The Glass Hollows

Bellhaven's guards allowed Mira through the gate because the caravan master refused to continue until they did.

That did not make them comfortable about it.

One guard kept his spear angled toward her while the Eastmere letter was checked. Another asked twice whether the whispertail inside her scarf was tame.

Mira decided not to mention that the animal had recently stolen her recovered foot after helping her retrieve it.

Kael stood beside her with the greatsword strapped across his back and watched the inspection with steadily declining patience.

The captain eventually returned the letter.

"Eastmere Guild confirms both of you. Keep your weapons under control inside the market district. If someone mistakes her for an undead monster, don't destroy the street proving them wrong."

Kael glanced toward Mira.

She adjusted her glasses.

"The last person who did that was him."

The captain looked at Kael.

Kael became very interested in Bellhaven's architecture.

They entered.

Eastmere had seemed large when Mira first reached it.

Bellhaven made it look like a village.

Three major roads met inside the walls, crowded with wagons, armed travellers and merchants. Workshops filled the western quarter. Taller stone buildings surrounded the central guild square, and signs advertised enchantment work, monster processing, dungeon maps, Essence grading, armour repair and weapon reforging.

Mira slowed beside a tailor's window.

A mannequin wore a travelling mantle built from overlapping ivory and charcoal cloth, silver reinforcement hidden beneath the shoulders and gold thread running around the high collar.

Kael walked several metres before noticing.

"We have to deliver the quarry sample."

"I know."

"You've stopped."

"I can look while stopped too."

Kael waited.

Mira continued reluctantly.

The Bellhaven Adventurers' Guild occupied a broad stone building near the centre of the district. A carved beast skull hung over the entrance, and the front hall contained more requests than Eastmere's entire guild board.

Kael stopped almost immediately.

Mira almost did too.

There were hunting contracts, dungeon surveys, caravan escorts, missing-person searches, gathering requests and several larger postings marked with coloured seals.

One notice offered twelve small silver per confirmed Razorwing nest destroyed along Emberwood Road, with an additional bounty for intact wing-blades.

Another requested the removal of Ironjaw Rooks from an abandoned quarry north of Bellhaven. Their hooked beaks damaged armour, but the guild wanted the magnetised black feathers they grew after maturity.

A third warned of Shellhorns breaking irrigation walls near the southern farms. The creatures were described as low, broad quadrupeds covered in layered shell, with a frontal horn capable of releasing short bursts of compressed force.

Kael looked at the board.

Mira looked at the reward columns.

Then both found the Glass Hollows.

Three separate requests had been attached beneath the dungeon notice.

Glass Hollows Survey

Updated mapping required after recent tremors.

Reward: 8 small silver per verified new chamber.

Missing Expedition

Four-person survey team overdue. Rescue and recovery authorised.

Reward: 1 gold per survivor returned, plus contribution payment.

Material Procurement

Crystal Fibre, Resonant Glass, Hollowglass and intact Essence-bearing growths requested.

Payment varies by quality and condition.

Kael read the second notice again.

"The missing expedition entered yesterday morning. Levels five through seven."

Mira studied the map beside it.

"How long should they have been inside?"

"Six hours for the upper route."

A guild worker passing behind them stopped.

"If you're considering it, the next organised party leaves tomorrow."

Kael turned.

"Why tomorrow?"

"Because the last search team returned with two people and one shield that still counts as a shield."

That changed the conversation.

Mira looked toward the map.

"What happened?"

"Crystalbacks moved into the upper halls, and the crystal growths have been spreading since the tremors. Several old passages are blocked. A few new ones opened."

The quarry came immediately to mind.

Mira examined the notice again.

"Did the growth accelerate before or after the tremors?"

"After, as far as anyone knows."

That did not make the dark mineral beneath Eastmere responsible.

It did make the timing worth remembering.

The worker pointed toward another sheet.

"Maelis on the second craft floor is paying extra for intact material above Item Level Five. The guild also pays for confirmed route changes."

Mira looked at Kael.

He smiled.

"Now you're interested."

"I was already interested."

They registered for the afternoon search party.

The departure left Mira almost three hours.

She spent the first in Bellhaven's tailoring district.

Tessa's workshop had introduced her to repairs.

Bellhaven showed her what the profession became when people had money, monsters and access to better materials.

One workshop specialised in monster silk. Another treated leather with Essence-resistant oils. A third displayed travelling clothing with thin plates sewn beneath the outer fabric so cleanly that Mira had to look twice to find them.

She entered Thread & Thorn because the window contained a black-and-ivory coat with gold embroidery around the collar.

The owner, Maelis, was an elderly woman with silver hair tied behind her head.

Her attention went first to Mira's robe.

Then the repaired scarf.

Then the little tailoring kit attached to her satchel.

"Did you make those repairs?"

"Some."

"Who taught you?"

"A leatherworker in Eastmere."

Maelis pinched one repaired seam.

"She taught you enough not to make it worse."

Mira decided she liked her.

She unpacked several materials.

Whispertail fur.

Cloud membrane.

Winged slime pinions.

Dense adaptive membrane.

Stoneback carapace.

Maelis put gloves on before examining the corrupted slime fragment.

When Mira explained that she wanted clothing she could fight in without looking as though somebody had wrapped her in whatever armour happened to fit, Maelis studied her for several seconds.

Maelis separated the usable materials.

Cloud Membrane could reinforce lighter cloth without making it stiff. Thin Stoneback sections could protect the shoulders and forearms. Whispertail fur could be worked into trim and inner lining.

The strongest slime materials went back into Mira's bag.

Maelis placed three pieces of thread across the table. One ordinary, one treated and one glowing faintly blue.

"You can own the finest material in Bellhaven and ruin it with weak stitching. If the seam fails the moment you channel Essence, the level of the core sewn beside it doesn't matter."

Mira touched the treated thread.

She had been collecting whatever looked strongest.

That was not enough.

The parts had to cooperate.

"What would you use from the Glass Hollows?"

"Crystal Fibre first. Hollowglass if you're lucky. Resonant strands if you're extremely lucky and don't mind making me jealous."

"What would you make?"

Maelis looked at Mira's current robes.

"A proper travelling set."

Mira's attention sharpened.

"Black?"

"Mostly."

"Ivory?"

"Yes."

"Gold?"

Maelis smiled.

"If you bring me enough material."

That settled it.

Before Mira left, Maelis gave her treated thread and told her to redo the weakest repair on her scarf herself.

"If you're learning, ruin your own clothing before someone pays you to ruin theirs."

Mira liked her even more.

Kael had spent the same time with a weaponsmith.

When they met again, thin silver channels had been engraved through the dark centre of his greatsword.

Mira looked at the blade.

"What changed?"

"Reinforced channels."

Kael drew several centimetres.

Frost travelled along the exposed edge more smoothly than before.

"The smith couldn't use the Disciple fragment yet. This should let the enchantments carry through the sword better."

"It still looks the same."

"That was part of the instructions."

Mira understood perfectly.

The search party consisted of six people.

Iven was a broad Guardian carrying a tower shield and short mace. Sella used a compact bow and several different arrowheads. Orra was a Water Mage with a silver-blue staff. Joric, Bellhaven's scout, had entered the Glass Hollows several times before.

Mira carried the Briarwatch Disciple staff.

The heavy leatherworking awl rested at her belt.

Kael noticed the missing spear as they left Bellhaven.

"Still angry?"

"Yes."

"About the foot or the spear?"

Mira looked at him.

Kael walked faster.

The Glass Hollows lay beneath a low ridge east of Bellhaven.

Its entrance resembled a crack through an enormous sheet of pale stone. Natural glass covered sections of the surrounding rock, scattering afternoon sunlight across the hillside.

Inside, the dungeon became beautiful enough that Mira immediately understood the name.

Translucent crystal climbed the walls in broad sheets. Blue, amber, green and colourless formations caught light from somewhere deeper and carried it through the passages.

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

The whispertail emerged from Mira's scarf.

Five tails rose behind it.

Light moved through the translucent walls.

The cub's eyes tracked it.

Their first Crystalback attacked within ten minutes.

The creature resembled a low lizard covered in overlapping plates of transparent mineral. Light bent through its armour and distorted the body beneath.

Sella fired.

Her arrow glanced off its shoulder.

Kael stepped in.

His sword came from a high guard.

The Crystalback twisted.

Kael changed the cut before impact, rotated the greatsword across his body and let the flat strike the armour instead of the edge.

The creature staggered.

Its tail came around.

Iven's shield intercepted.

Mira entered from the other side.

The staff struck behind the knee.

The limb folded.

Kael stepped through his first movement, shortened his grip and drove the sword forward like a heavy spear.

The point entered beneath the lifted armour.

Sella's next arrow followed into the same opening.

The Crystalback thrashed.

Mira drew the awl.

One step carried her inside the creature's foreleg.

She drove the metal point beneath the jaw.

Light travelled through it.

The Crystalback stopped moving.

Mira withdrew the awl.

The dead creature left two usable plates and a length of translucent fibre growing beneath the armour.

Crystal Fibre

Quality: Common

Item Level: 6

A flexible mineral filament with clean Essence conduction and excellent tensile strength.

Mira packed it immediately.

Joric laughed.

"Maelis?"

"Yes."

"She'll strip half the dungeon if you give her an excuse."

Mira hoped so.

The next chamber contained six Crystalbacks.

Kael moved first.

Frost spread through his sword.

He entered with a long diagonal cut, but the edge stopped short of the nearest creature's armour. The movement continued into Crescent Sever.

A white arc left the blade and struck a Crystalback across the shoulder.

Frost spread through the fracture.

Kael stepped after the wave.

His sword returned from the opposite side.

The flat hit the frozen plate.

Crystal burst outward.

He used the opening rather than casting again.

A second creature rushed him.

Kael's lead foot shifted.

The greatsword passed beside his body, turned around his back and rose beneath the Crystalback's jaw in a compact upward strike.

Mira's own opponent attacked at the same time.

Its tail swept across the chamber.

She met it with the staff.

Not by stopping it.

The wood touched the limb and travelled with it.

Mira turned.

The force passed beside her.

Her hips followed.

The staff came around from the same motion and struck the Crystalback's neck joint.

The creature snapped toward her.

Mira was already closer.

The awl entered beneath the plate.

A golden moth left her shoulder.

The little construct folded its wings and accelerated into the gap beside her weapon.

Light flashed inside the joint.

The Crystalback collapsed onto one foreleg.

Mira moved around it.

A second moth hovered above the creature's head.

The Crystalback tracked the Essence.

Mira's staff struck the opposite knee.

It fell.

The awl finished it beneath the jaw.

Something shifted at the edge of her awareness.

A tail behind Kael.

Water gathering beside Orra.

A crack widening through Iven's shield.

Another Crystalback loosening itself from the ceiling.

Mira's attention did not jump between them.

The relationships remained present together.

She struck Kael once across the shoulder with the staff.

He moved immediately.

The tail passed through the space he had occupied.

Kael turned with it.

Lightning filled the channels of his sword.

His stance lowered.

The blade came behind one hip.

Then forward.

"Gravebreaker."

He drove through the floor rather than merely striking down.

Stone erupted beneath the Crystalback.

Lightning travelled through every fresh fracture.

The creature rose with the broken rock.

Orra's water hit it in midair.

Electricity spread through the suspended water.

The Crystalback convulsed.

Orra looked at Kael.

"Warn me before doing that."

Kael grinned.

"I was going to say the same thing."

Mira caught another tail on her staff and redirected it into Iven's shield.

The impact opened the creature's side.

The cub moved.

Pink-white Essence gathered beneath its paws.

It ran three steps up the wall.

Five pale images separated from its body.

The Crystalback turned toward the wrong one.

The real whispertail landed on its back.

Essence gathered through its claws.

It struck once between two crystal plates and sprang away.

The creature twisted after it.

That exposed the damaged seam.

Sella put an arrow through it.

Mira saw the cub land.

One tail touched the floor first.

Then two.

Its entire body rotated before the paws followed.

The movement resembled part of the Bone Disciple's method without copying anything human.

Balance.

Transfer.

Redirect.

The fight ended shortly afterward.

They collected nine lengths of Crystal Fibre, three intact plates and a pale core carrying earth affinity.

Joric marked the chamber.

The guild would pay for the confirmed Crystalback migration as part of the survey.

The dungeon changed beyond it.

Joric stopped beside a wall.

"This wasn't here."

Crystal had grown through an old passage and split the surrounding stone apart. A narrow tunnel descended behind it.

Sella crouched.

"Tracks."

Human boot prints crossed the new passage.

The missing expedition had gone through.

They followed.

The growth became denser.

Some formations brightened when Orra gathered Essence.

Mira touched one with the end of her staff.

The vibration travelled farther than it should have.

"Don't use anything large unless we need it."

Orra looked at the wall.

"You think they're reacting?"

Joric tapped another formation with his knife.

A clear note travelled through the passage.

Something answered below.

The deeper sound was lower.

Heavier.

Kael lowered his sword.

They continued without further testing.

The missing expedition appeared in the next chamber.

Three adventurers were trapped on a raised shelf.

The fourth lay below.

Something stood over him.

At first Mira thought it was another Crystalback.

Then the creature moved.

It was nearly three metres long and supported by six thick legs. Layers of glass-like armour covered a body of dark flexible stone. A cluster of crystals grew from its shoulders and curved forward around the head like a crown.

Light gathered inside them.

Joric shouted.

Everyone spread.

A beam crossed the chamber.

Stone parted beneath it.

A severed section of column began falling toward the trapped adventurers.

Mira moved.

Three golden plates appeared above the shelf.

They did not form a single wall.

The first changed the angle of the largest fragment.

The second caught another piece and broke beneath it.

The third lasted only long enough to send falling debris away from the injured people.

Kael ran past her.

Lightning filled his sword.

The creature turned the crown toward him.

Crescent Sever crossed the room.

The beam answered.

The attacks collided.

Kael's sword wave broke apart.

The weakened beam continued.

Iven took it on his shield.

A bright line burned across the metal.

Kael was already moving.

Lightning disappeared.

Frost gathered instead.

He entered from the monster's side with a low sweeping form. The greatsword struck one foreleg close to the ground.

Ice spread through the glass armour.

Kael stepped around the limb as the creature lifted it.

His hands shifted.

The blade rose over his opposite shoulder.

The next cut struck the same frozen section.

Crystal shattered.

Mira ran for the opening.

Staff first.

The end struck the exposed joint and turned the creature's weight farther off line.

Mira stepped inside.

The awl followed.

Metal entered the dark tissue.

The creature screamed.

Every crystal in the chamber answered.

Vibration hit Mira's skull.

Her hands loosened.

The cub cried out from her scarf.

The monster's tail struck her.

Mira crossed the chamber and hit the wall.

Bone shifted inside her ribs.

She landed badly.

The creature's crown began glowing again.

Mira pushed herself upright.

The light was not appearing everywhere at once.

It entered through the rear crystal.

Passed forward.

Split.

Rejoined near the central point.

Mira watched the sequence.

Behind it, Sella moved toward a clearer angle.

Orra had water forming around her staff.

Iven was moving toward the trapped expedition.

Kael had reached the damaged leg again.

The crown brightened.

"Rear crystal!"

Kael looked once.

His sword moved.

Frost gathered along the edge.

Crescent Sever left from a rising diagonal.

The creature fired.

Mira raised one hand.

A small Blessing plane appeared in the beam's path.

The beam changed by a few degrees.

It missed Kael.

His frozen sword wave hit the rear crystal.

A white fracture spread through it.

Orra understood.

Water wrapped the damaged growth.

Kael crossed the monster's flank in three heavy steps.

His sword travelled with him.

The flat struck the soaked crystal.

Cold surged through it.

The sudden change broke the entire rear section.

The creature screamed again.

This time Mira lowered the staff to the floor.

The vibration entered the wood.

Her hands loosened around it instead of fighting the force.

The staff carried part of the tremor into the stone beneath her.

Mira stayed upright.

The creature lunged toward Kael.

Six legs moved.

Mira saw the load shift before the body followed.

Rear pair.

Centre pair.

Front.

Its left side was compensating for the damaged limb.

Kael changed from frost to lightning.

Sella was drawing.

Orra was moving behind Iven.

The injured adventurers remained above the fight.

The cub had left Mira's scarf.

It was running along the wall.

Mira moved.

Her right foot landed.

Her left followed.

The staff touched the monster's damaged foreleg at the instant its weight arrived.

Mira turned with the impact.

The force travelled through her wrist, shoulder, spine, hips and both legs.

Her skeletal body did not match the Disciple's diagrams.

The path still existed.

The staff guided the foot several inches sideways.

The Burrower stumbled.

Kael entered underneath it.

His greatsword began from low beside his right leg.

Lightning filled the blade.

He drove upward through the exposed underside.

The monster convulsed.

The remaining crown crystals flashed.

Sella's arrow struck the largest one.

The cub appeared beside it.

Five tails opened.

A pressure ripple struck the damaged crystal from the opposite direction.

The arrow went deeper.

The crystal broke.

Mira was already coming in.

The awl sat close against her forearm.

The monster tried to recover.

A Lumen Moth drifted across its vision.

Then another.

The creature turned toward the stronger Essence source.

Mira crossed underneath.

The awl entered through the wound Kael had opened.

She felt the dark material resisting the point.

Light gathered through the metal.

The structure inside the monster was dense.

Mira changed what she was doing.

The light did not burst.

She sent it farther.

A thin golden line followed the existing tear through the body.

Something inside reflected it.

Mira felt the path change.

Glass.

She adjusted.

The light struck an internal crystal.

Reflected.

Changed direction.

The second path was brighter.

Mira's attention sharpened.

She sent another moth into the wound.

It unfolded.

Light entered from a different angle.

The two lines crossed inside the creature.

The point where they met flared.

The Burrower screamed.

Kael saw the reaction.

He planted one foot.

The greatsword circled over his shoulder and descended with both hands.

"Falling Ruin!"

The blade hit beside the damaged foreleg.

Force broke through the floor.

Lightning followed.

The monster lost its footing.

Mira withdrew the awl.

One moth remained inside the wound.

She changed its direction.

The reflected light moved again.

A crystal beneath the armour shattered from within.

The creature collapsed.

Kael pulled his sword free and stepped through the motion into another cut.

Mira moved with him.

The staff struck one limb away from her path.

Kael's greatsword opened the damaged underside wider.

Mira entered.

The awl went in.

Three moths followed.

One carried concentrated light.

The second split around an internal reflective plate.

The third followed the brighter path created by the first two.

All three converged.

The dark centre ruptured.

The Glasscrowned Burrower fell.

For several seconds, crystal fragments continued sliding across the floor.

Mira remained still.

Her awareness felt strange.

She remembered where everyone had been during the final exchange.

Not as separate snapshots.

As relationships.

Kael moving through the weakened side.

Sella's arrow changing what the cub could break.

Orra's water making Kael's frost more effective.

The Burrower's damaged leg altering every later movement.

The internal glass changing where Mira's light travelled.

There had been too much information to reduce the fight to a single answer.

She had carried several answers together.

The thought remained unfinished.

Someone groaned beneath the monster.

Mira turned immediately.

The fourth adventurer was alive.

She reached him with the medical bundle already open.

Crystal fragments had entered the abdomen.

Minor Heal gathered.

Mira touched the worst wound.

Golden light entered.

Something about it felt familiar in a way it had not before.

The same Light she had just redirected through glass was present here.

Softer.

Structured differently.

Guided toward restoration instead of destruction.

Mira kept working.

The wound closed from the deepest damaged tissue outward.

She moved to the next.

Then another.

The light changed each time without needing the entire spell rebuilt from the beginning.

Mira noticed.

Stored the thought.

Continued healing.

The man's breathing stabilised.

The expedition leader climbed down from the shelf.

"We thought nobody was coming until tomorrow."

Joric helped her over the broken stone.

"You can thank the two children who decided tomorrow was too late."

Kael looked toward Mira.

Mira continued treating the injured man.

The decision currently looked sensible.

She saw no reason to interfere with that.

The Burrower left a considerable amount of material.

Its crown broke into several usable structures.

Resonant Glass Crown

Quality: Rare

Item Level: 8

A branching crystal structure capable of carrying and redirecting Essence.

Hollowglass Fibre

Quality: Uncommon

Item Level: 7

A flexible crystalline filament with exceptional Essence conduction and high tensile strength.

Earthglass Core

Quality: Rare

Item Level: 8

A developed Essence core carrying earth affinity and strong refractive properties.

Kael picked up one crown fragment.

"This could work with the sword."

Mira examined the branching pathways inside it.

"After the channels are rebuilt properly."

Kael smiled.

He was learning.

Mira took the Hollowglass Fibre.

It was so thin that it nearly disappeared between her gloved fingers.

She imagined it worked through black and ivory cloth.

Gold thread.

Crystal conduction hidden inside the seams.

Maelis was going to want all of it.

Joric finished marking the chamber and added the new passage to his map.

The guild would pay for that too.

Between the rescue, the route discovery, the Burrower bounty and the materials, the Glass Hollows had become the most profitable thing Mira had done since arriving.

She approved.

The return journey was slower.

The rescued expedition could not move quickly, and Mira's ribs had become increasingly unstable.

She used the Disciple staff while walking.

Not as a crutch.

The contact with the ground helped her feel how force travelled through her body.

Right foot.

Left.

Staff.

Hip.

Shoulder.

The route shifted whenever the terrain changed.

Her bones were not built like the body in the scroll.

Trying to force them into the same arrangement had been the mistake.

The underlying principle still worked.

By the time they reached the dungeon entrance, Mira was no longer reproducing the Bone Disciple's stance.

She was beginning to build one that belonged to her.

Bellhaven's gates were visible by dusk.

The rescued expedition went directly to the guild infirmary.

Mira and Kael remained long enough to collect the immediate portions of their rewards.

The guild paid them for three separate contracts.

Missing Expedition Rescue: 4 gold divided by contribution.

Glass Hollows Route Survey: 16 small silver for two verified passage changes.

Glasscrowned Burrower Emergency Bounty: 2 gold plus material shares.

The procurement office purchased several Crystal Fibres from the group but allowed Mira to retain enough for Maelis.

She kept the Hollowglass Fibre.

Kael kept a Resonant Glass fragment.

The Earthglass Core went into guild appraisal until the party decided whether to sell it or divide its value.

Kael counted his coins.

"We should do more quests."

Mira looked at her own payment.

"Yes."

They agreed for entirely different reasons.

Thread & Thorn was still open when Mira arrived.

Maelis unlocked the door, looked at Mira's torn robe and then at the Hollowglass Fibre in her hand.

Her eyes widened.

"You actually found it."

Mira held out the filament.

"And Crystal Fibre."

"How much?"

Mira opened the satchel.

Maelis stared inside.

"Come back tomorrow morning."

Mira looked toward the black-and-ivory travelling mantle displayed in the window.

For once she had the materials.

She had enough money.

More importantly, she understood much more clearly what she wanted the finished clothing to do.

Carry Essence.

Survive movement.

Protect without interfering with the way her body turned.

Give the moths somewhere to rest and release from.

Possibly conduct Light through seams the way the Glass Crown had conducted it through branches.

Mira touched the Hollowglass Fibre.

Tomorrow had become important.

Outside, Kael was already examining another guild notice.

Mira joined him.

The posting showed a drawing of a broad horned creature surrounded by broken stone.

Shellhorn Brood — South Irrigation Line

Several juveniles had damaged retaining walls.

One mature specimen had begun driving travellers from the road.

The reward included coin, reinforced shell, and an Essence-bearing horn if recovered intact.

Another notice beneath it showed a black bird with hooked metallic feathers.

Ironjaw Rook Cull — Northern Quarry

A third had been posted with a red border.

Glass Hollows Lower Depth Survey

The recommended level was higher.

Kael looked at Mira.

Mira looked at the notices.

Her ribs needed stabilising.

Her clothes needed replacing.

The cub needed food.

She wanted time with the Disciple scroll.

She wanted to understand what had happened to her light inside the Burrower.

She also wanted to know what waited deeper inside the Glass Hollows.

"Tomorrow," Mira said.

Kael nodded.

Neither of them specified which problem they meant.
