Chapter 18: Made to Grow

Bellhaven gave Mira and Kael more work than they could reasonably finish, which only encouraged Kael to keep collecting notices until Mira started taking them out of his hands. Three days after Thread & Thorn finished her new coat, they left the guild with four contracts, a borrowed map and an agreement that they would complete the southern route before accepting anything else.

Their first destination lay along the irrigation channels where a brood of Shellhorns had damaged two retaining walls and driven several workers from the fields. The contract paid for every juvenile pushed away from the farms, with a larger bounty for the mature creature believed to be leading them.

Mira spent the walk testing her new clothing. Crystal Fibre ran through the hidden seams beneath the black outer layer, and the Hollowglass junction across her upper back distributed Essence toward the shoulders, sleeves and collar with far less resistance than her old robe had ever allowed.

Five Lumen Moths drifted around her as they walked. Two rested against the gold embroidery near her collar, while the others moved between her shoulders and wrists as Mira tested how easily she could feed them through different channels.

Kael watched one disappear beneath the edge of her mantle and emerge near the opposite shoulder. "You built your coat around the moths," he said, and Mira adjusted the fall of the ivory layer before telling him that she had built the moths into the coat because there was no reason for equipment and magic to work separately.

The whispertail cub reached for one of the lights with both paws and missed when Mira moved it aside. Kael glanced toward the animal and said that the coat had also become an expensive toy, while Mira replied that this part of the design had not been intentional.

They reached the damaged irrigation wall before midday. Two juvenile Shellhorns were feeding near the water, each covered in overlapping brown plates with a wedge-shaped horn projecting from the skull.

Kael took the nearer creature while Mira circled toward the second. Their first exchanges stayed controlled because the guild wanted the juveniles driven away rather than butchered, so Kael used the broad face of his greatsword to interrupt charges while Mira kept her staff low and guided the other Shellhorn away from the retaining wall whenever it tried to circle back.

Her new coat changed the way she crossed difficult angles. A small golden plane appeared beside the stone channel when the Shellhorn cut off her path, and Mira planted one foot against it long enough to push herself over the creature's shoulder instead of backing away.

The barrier vanished behind her as she landed. Her staff touched the Shellhorn's rear leg and redirected its weight just enough to make the creature stumble toward the open field.

The juvenile turned aggressively. Mira entered before the horn aligned with her, drove the staff beneath its jaw and used the creature's own upward movement to force its head away from the canal.

Kael had already pushed the other juvenile beyond the boundary markers. He looked over in time to see Mira use another small golden foothold against empty air and commented that she was going to make ordinary roads feel disappointing.

Mira replied that ordinary roads had fewer monsters. The juvenile finally retreated after another failed charge, following its companion toward the low wooded ridge beyond the fields.

The adult arrived before either of them could relax.

It burst through the brush with enough force to throw dirt across the irrigation road. The shell covering its shoulders had darkened into layered ridges, and the broad central horn vibrated faintly whenever the creature lowered its head.

Mature Shellhorn

Level 7

The first compressed burst from its horn caught Kael before he reached full guard. He disappeared through a wooden fence and came back moments later with splinters caught in his hair, which was enough evidence for Mira to avoid standing directly in front of the creature.

The Shellhorn drove them along the irrigation road for several exchanges, using its horn to control the space in front while relying on its armour whenever they tried to attack from the side. Mira's awl found several seams without penetrating deeply enough to matter, and Kael's ordinary cuts left pale marks across the shell without breaking through.

They began changing the way they pressured it. Mira scattered three moths around its face and kept another pair near the ground, forcing the Shellhorn to lower its head whenever the lights threatened its eyes while Kael worked against the same section of armour with repeated heavy contact.

When the creature finally committed to another charge, Mira released the stored Essence inside one of the lower moths and used the brief golden support beneath her foot to rise over the horn. She landed across the Shellhorn's upper shell, drove the awl into a seam near the shoulder and managed to hold on through two violent turns before the creature threw her into the grass.

Kael entered while its attention remained on her. His greatsword came through a long diagonal cut, and instead of stopping after the first impact he carried the weapon around his body, shifted his grip and struck the same section of shell from below.

Frost spread through the damaged ridge. Mira returned from the opposite side and drove the awl into the seam she had already opened, sending two moths behind the point until golden light moved beneath the shell.

The Shellhorn staggered. Kael saw the front legs buckle and drove the point of the greatsword beneath its chest with lightning concentrated through the lower channel of the blade.

The discharge travelled into exposed tissue instead of washing across armour. The creature collapsed hard enough to crack the irrigation road beneath one shoulder.

They returned to Bellhaven with the horn, three intact shell plates and enough mud on Mira's coat to make Maelis visibly angry. The tailor handed her a brush and refused to discuss the next alteration until the black fabric looked black again.

The guild paid the Shellhorn bounty before noon. Kael spent part of his share on forge access, while Mira bought treated thread and took another contract from the board before he could find something with a larger drawing.

Their next job involved Ironjaw Rooks nesting in the remains of an abandoned quarry tower north of Bellhaven. The mature birds were nearly large enough to carry Mira, and the metallic edges of their black feathers struck weapons with enough force to wrench wrists and bend thinner blades.

Kael learned quickly that fighting the Rooks on their terms was miserable. The birds attacked from above, accelerated through their dives and opened their wings only when they needed to change direction, leaving him very little time to bring the greatsword around once they committed.

He stopped chasing them after the first few exchanges. Instead, he positioned himself between ruined columns and deliberately left clear routes above his shoulders, encouraging the Rooks toward spaces where their wings had less room to open.

Mira noticed the pattern while fighting farther up the quarry slope. She sent three moths into one of the apparent openings and kept their light dim until a Rook folded into a dive, then brightened them together when it became too late for the bird to abandon the approach.

The Rook adjusted toward the sudden Essence. That small change carried it directly into the line Kael had prepared, and his greatsword rose beneath the bird with enough force to send it through the remains of a wooden platform.

Kael looked toward Mira while another Rook circled above him. "I was setting that up," he called, and Mira answered that she had noticed before directing another moth toward the next approach.

The flock attacked together after that. Seven Rooks filled the quarry with overlapping dives, and the old tower gave them enough vertical space to attack from several heights without entering the same line twice.

Mira stopped trying to follow every bird individually. She watched the routes forming through the quarry, the spaces between ruined columns and the way certain dives forced the next bird to correct around them.

The new coat helped those decisions become movement almost immediately. Essence travelled through the sleeves before she consciously reached for it, and brief golden supports appeared wherever the broken tower failed to provide the next foothold.

She crossed from wall to wall while the Rooks pursued. Several dives missed as Mira changed height through the collapsing masonry, while her moths repeatedly disturbed wings or pulled attention toward false openings.

One Rook corrected faster than the others and struck her from the side. The sharpened feathers tore through the outer layer of her coat and snapped the heavy awl near the middle before throwing her against the quarry floor.

Mira recovered with half the weapon still in her hand. When the same bird came through for another attack, she threw the broken point beneath its beak and sent a moth through the opening a moment later.

Golden light flashed inside the neck. The Rook crashed into the stone behind her and did not rise.

Mira looked at the long cut across her new coat. Kael saw her expression from the far side of the quarry and shouted that the bird responsible was already dead.

"It damaged the coat," Mira called back while drawing the remaining half of the awl. Kael glanced toward the rest of the flock and decided they were probably about to have a worse afternoon.

Mira stopped preserving Essence after that. Her moths spread across the tower ruins and turned the air between the remaining Rooks into a shifting field of light, forcing repeated corrections that Kael exploited almost immediately.

He had also changed.

Weapon Sense had grown sharper after several days in Hadran's forge, and the greatsword moved through the crowded quarry with far more variety than it had when Mira first met him. Kael shortened his grip when the birds came close, used long cuts only when he had room, and allowed the weapon's weight to carry him from one guard into another instead of repeatedly recovering to the same stance.

A Rook caught the blade between both metallic wings. Kael let the bind pull the sword upward, turned with the force and shifted his hands while the movement continued, sending the trapped bird into the quarry floor behind him before the greatsword came back around against the next attacker.

The largest Rook tried to escape after the flock broke. Mira sent four moths into its retreat and spread them wide enough that the bird curved away from each source rather than taking a direct route toward the trees.

Kael watched the changing line. Lightning gathered along one of the narrow silver channels running near the edge of his sword, and Crescent Sever left the blade with more Essence travelling through one side than the other.

The projected slash bent.

The curve was small but deliberate, enough to catch the Rook across one wing after it had already moved away from the original line. The bird fell beyond the quarry wall and struck the ground among the trees.

Mira looked at Kael when the fight ended. "Do that again," she said as he stared at the greatsword with obvious satisfaction.

Kael ran his thumb along the engraved channel. "I was planning to."

They took the Rook materials directly to Hadran.

The smith listened while Kael described the curved Crescent Sever, then laid the greatsword across his reinforced worktable and examined the channels with a small glass lens. Mira stood on the opposite side and looked at the different routes carrying frost and lightning through the blade.

The channels had been built with the same general shape. That had worked well enough, but Mira had watched both enchantments behave too differently in combat for the arrangement to remain satisfying.

She traced the frost route first. "This should widen sooner," she said, and Hadran looked up while Kael immediately reached for a piece of charcoal.

Mira drew the frost path across the worktable. The channel broadened as it approached the striking section of the blade, allowing the cold to spread across a larger contact area instead of being carried through the same narrow route used by lightning.

Kael drew the second design himself. His lightning channel stayed narrow almost to the tip before splitting into two smaller outlets, one continuing forward while the other reached toward the edge where he often made contact during thrusts.

Hadran studied both drawings. "And if you decide you want fire as well?" he asked, which stopped Kael's charcoal halfway across the table.

Hadran had an Embercore suitable for testing. The core was too weak to become a permanent part of the greatsword, but stable enough to teach them what fire-aligned Essence did inside a weapon channel.

Their first design failed quickly. Fire expanded too aggressively through the wider route Mira had favoured, while Kael's narrower channel trapped too much heat around the centre and discoloured the practice blade.

The third version combined both approaches. A narrow route carried the Essence from the guard, widening gradually before feeding several short outlets near the striking portion of the blade.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Hadran forged the test piece while Kael helped with the hammer work. Mira stayed beside the table and adjusted the channel layout whenever the metal revealed a problem that the drawing had hidden.

Kael improved every time the hammer returned to his hand. His strikes had stopped looking like isolated attempts to flatten hot steel and begun following the shape already present in the work, with each impact setting up the next correction rather than creating another problem for Hadran to repair.

When the test blade cooled enough to use, Kael fed fire-aligned Essence through the temporary core. Orange light moved cleanly through the central route and divided near the edge, producing a controlled layer of flame instead of spilling heat across the entire weapon.

Kael swung once and watched the flame remain close to the steel. On the next attempt he opened more of the outlets during the movement, creating a broader flare that expanded only near the end of the cut.

Mira was already sketching changes to the greatsword. Hadran watched them work over his table for several minutes before asking whether either of them intended to leave him enough room to use his own forge.

The broken awl remained beside Mira's satchel throughout the afternoon. She finally placed both pieces on the table and asked Hadran to help her build something that would survive longer than a leatherworking tool being driven through monster armour.

He picked up the broken metal and asked what she wanted. Mira spread her hands to indicate a weapon considerably longer than the original awl and explained that she wanted a narrow piercing point, strong Essence conduction, enough length to threaten from outside arm's reach and a ring at the end for thread.

Kael looked from her hands to the broken tool. "That's becoming an actual weapon," he said, and Mira answered that the last one had made the argument convincingly.

They designed the balance together.

Kael wanted enough weight toward the point to make penetration easier. Mira wanted the centre close enough to her hand that the weapon could reverse direction quickly when she fought inside an opponent's reach.

The first model felt wrong immediately. Hadran moved the tang deeper into the grip and narrowed the final third of the metal until Mira could turn the weapon without feeling the tip continue after her wrist had already changed direction.

The weapon took two days to finish because Hadran made Mira participate in the parts she could manage safely instead of simply waiting for the result. Kael handled much of the shaping under supervision, while Mira worked on the internal Essence channels and the ringed rear section.

Crystal Fibre ran through the grip inside a protected sleeve. One channel carried Essence directly toward the point, while another ended near the ring where conductive thread could connect to the weapon.

Mira threaded a treated cord through it during the first test. A Lumen Moth settled against the cord, and when she sent it around a practice post the line followed smoothly enough for Mira to pull the weapon sideways after the throw.

Kael watched the needle change direction around the post. "You built one weapon and immediately started making it behave like three," he said, while Mira examined the blackened surface and replied that it still needed polishing.

Hollowsteel Needle

Quality: Uncommon

Item Level: 6

A long piercing weapon reinforced for Essence conduction. Internal channels connect the grip, point and ringed rear for compatible threads and other conductive materials.

Mira held it beside the black sleeve of her coat. The pale line through the centre matched the ivory and gold well enough that she approved before testing another throw.

Their next week became crowded with work.

They cleared Razorwing nests along Emberwood Road, escorted an alchemist through the first level of a flooded ruin, hunted Mudmaw Crawlers beneath an abandoned mill and accepted a recovery contract inside a small dungeon called the Broken Chapel. The guild paid well enough that Kael stopped pretending he accepted contracts only for the fights, while Mira accumulated materials faster than Maelis could decide what she wanted to keep.

Routine fights became shorter.

Mira's needle gave her enough reach to threaten openings without returning to the long commitment of the goblin spear. The ringed thread let her recover failed throws, pull the weapon through strange angles and send moths along the line when direct paths were blocked.

Her first attempts at controlling the thread during combat were poor. The needle wrapped around a tree during the Razorwing hunt, caught beneath a broken stair inside the flooded ruin and struck Kael's greatsword hard enough to make him ask whether he had become part of her training equipment.

By the Broken Chapel, the mistakes were becoming harder to provoke.

Three armoured revenants surrounded Mira near the altar while Kael fought the larger chapel guardian farther ahead. The revenants were slow enough that she could enter between them, but their rusted armour left only narrow openings and their heavy weapons punished mistakes brutally.

Mira kept the fight moving around the altar instead of meeting them one at a time. The needle passed through gaps beneath the arms and neck while its thread curved around stone, and brief Blessing surfaces gave her support whenever the broken floor failed to provide the angle she wanted.

The whispertail moved above the fight using ruined pillars and walls. Fivefold Mirage filled the chapel with pale copies whenever it crossed open space, while Mira's moths moved among those images until the revenants repeatedly committed attacks toward bodies and lights that were already gone.

Mira's awareness spread through the room with surprising ease.

She could feel the tension through the thread attached to her needle, follow the cub's movement across the upper walls and keep Kael's fight within the edge of her attention while dealing with the revenants directly. Each piece remained useful without forcing the others away.

One revenant ducked beneath a thrown needle. Mira pulled the thread around the creature's shoulder, changing the return path until the point entered the second revenant from behind.

Light followed the metal.

The first creature turned toward her.

Mira stepped inside its weapon and struck with her empty hand.

The movement travelled through her body with a smoothness that would have been impossible only days earlier. Her feet settled first, the turn passed through her hips and spine, and the shoulder delivered the impact without the awkward delay that had once separated each part of the motion.

The revenant stumbled.

Mira caught the returning needle and finished the exchange through the gap beneath its jaw.

Across the chapel, Kael's greatsword ignited.

The fire channel carried a narrow layer along the edge as he entered against the chapel guardian. His first cut opened an armour seam and released the wider branches only at contact, sending flame through the gap rather than wasting it across the outer plate.

Frost followed on the next exchange.

The sudden cold spread through the heated metal.

Cracks opened around the damaged seam.

Kael changed again.

Lightning entered the fracture through a thrust that ended in Crescent Sever at close range, and the guardian collapsed with blue-white arcs flashing beneath its armour.

Two remaining revenants tried to reach him.

Kael shifted before either completed the approach.

His greatsword started through the same descending line he had used repeatedly against the guardian, then shortened halfway through and became a thrust into the first revenant's chest. Momentum Break carried the interrupted weight into a rotation against the second, and Gravebreaker erupted beneath both before they could recover their footing.

Mira reached him as the chapel fell quiet.

Kael rested the greatsword against one shoulder. "Fire still costs too much."

"You open the side channels too early," Mira said as she looked at the scorched section near the edge.

Kael nodded. "I felt it."

Mira glanced toward the guardian's cracked armour. "The frost transition worked."

"That part was excellent."

They collected the relics and left before the chapel could produce anything else.

Level Six came after the Broken Chapel.

Level Seven followed four days later during the final Emberwood contract.

Mira spent her new points with increasing confidence.

Agility continued to receive the largest share because every technique she was building asked more from movement, recovery and precision. Spirit followed because the moths, threads and increasingly complex Essence routes demanded more capacity and finer control.

Strength received less direct investment.

The Disciple's Body Method was changing how much force she could produce from what she already had, while repeated combat and training were strengthening her naturally in smaller increments.

Her tailoring contributed differently.

Maelis noticed that Mira's hands had become faster before Mira did. During one evening repair, Mira threaded a narrow opening without looking away from the garment pattern she was studying.

Maelis watched her repeat it. "You needed both hands and most of your attention for that last week," she said, and Mira glanced down at the needle before trying the motion again.

Her fingers moved cleanly.

The thread followed.

Mira smiled and returned to the seam.

The coat continued evolving with her.

She extended smaller Essence branches toward the forearms, hips and lower edges of the mantle, allowing moths to emerge from more places without gathering around her shoulders first. The Hollowglass junction tolerated the changes better than Maelis expected as long as Mira distributed the strain gradually through the surrounding Crystal Fibre.

One new technique emerged during the final Razorwing contract.

Mira spread several moths around herself and pulsed Light through the coat's channels instead of sending them directly at the enemy. The glow reflected between the moving constructs and the polished fibres beneath the outer cloth, creating brief displaced images around her as she changed direction.

The first attempt barely resembled a person.

The second held the outline longer.

By the time another Razorwing attacked, three imperfect versions of Mira occupied slightly different positions around the real one.

The creature chose poorly.

Mira's needle entered from the side.

Kael landed nearby after finishing another bird and looked at the fading images. "That's horrible."

"The shoulders are wrong."

"I meant fighting against it."

Mira looked again.

The shoulders were still wrong.

She fixed them later.

The whispertail loved the result.

Its Fivefold Mirage mixed with Mira's light projections until the northern quarry filled with overlapping white tails, black coats and golden moths. Kael stopped trying to identify every false image and began reading the routes they created instead.

That suited him better.

His own progress had accelerated once blacksmithing entered his routine.

Weapon Sense responded to time at the forge almost as strongly as it did to combat. Kael began identifying uneven balance before Hadran touched a finished weapon and could often predict where a blade would flex incorrectly after only a few practice movements.

His second knife came out clean.

His first short sword required correction near the spine.

The third weapon was good enough that Hadran stopped telling Kael where to strike and started asking why he had chosen a particular shape.

Kael's answers became more precise every day.

The greatsword developed alongside him.

Frost used broad channels near the striking edge.

Lightning travelled through narrower routes that favoured fast concentration.

Fire moved through a widening central line with controlled outlets Kael could open at different points during a technique.

The enchantments began changing his skills in more deliberate ways.

A Frost Crescent concentrated cold along one side of the projected slash, allowing Kael to target a specific fracture instead of spreading the effect across the entire impact. Lightning Gravebreaker sent less force upward and more current through the ground when he fought Mudmaw Crawlers in wet soil.

Fire changed Falling Ruin most dramatically.

Kael allowed the heavy rotation to carry the greatsword into the ground while keeping the fire contained until the moment of impact. The outlets opened through the broken earth and produced a ring of heat that forced nearby creatures away from the centre rather than merely increasing the damage beneath the blade.

His ordinary swordsmanship improved with the experiments.

The active techniques appeared inside his forms rather than interrupting them. A rising cut became Crescent Sever, a descending step carried Gravebreaker into the floor, and Falling Ruin emerged from the largest committed rotations when the sword's weight was already moving in the correct direction.

During the final Razorwing contract, five birds attacked him at once.

Kael gave them the air.

He controlled the places where they could descend.

The greatsword travelled continuously between guards while the Rooks circled, and each opening he appeared to leave narrowed as soon as one of them committed.

A bird came from behind.

Kael altered the end of his current swing and let Momentum Break carry the blade over his shoulder into a violent reverse cut.

The flat struck the Rook and knocked it into another.

Crescent Sever passed through the collision.

Two birds fell.

The remaining three scattered toward different sections of the quarry.

Kael looked once at their routes.

Mira's moths were already moving into the same spaces.

Their next exchange ended the contract.

That evening, Mira sat on the roof above Thread & Thorn with the Disciple's Body Method open across her knees. The whispertail had fallen asleep across the lower portion of the scroll, forcing Mira to shift the parchment sideways whenever she wanted to read the covered notes.

The diagrams felt different now.

Movements she had once treated as separate sections had started connecting naturally. Balance affected how force entered the body, that force changed the position available afterward, and the next movement depended on how efficiently the previous one had ended.

Mira stood with the Hollowsteel Needle in hand.

She worked through the sequence slowly at first, allowing the needle to travel with the turn of her body rather than forcing each movement into a separate position. Repetition smoothed the transitions until the recovery from one thrust became the beginning of the next.

She changed the pattern.

Less shoulder.

More hip.

A smaller adjustment through the foot.

The needle arrived faster.

Mira tried again and let Essence circulate through the same route.

The connection between her bones tightened as the movement passed through them.

Her next thrust carried more force.

She stopped for several seconds and considered what she was feeling.

The Disciple's method had begun with balance and redirection, but her own body kept adding more variables.

Essence changed stability.

Stability changed movement.

Movement changed where Essence travelled next.

Her awareness affected which route she chose before the body committed to it.

The pieces were becoming difficult to separate because every useful part influenced another.

Mira looked over Bellhaven.

A wagon turned through the street below.

Someone opened a window across the square.

A bird passed between rooftops.

The whispertail's tails shifted as it slept.

Mira remained aware of each movement without losing the needle in her hand or the Essence travelling through her coat.

Simplifying the world into one useful answer had carried her a long way.

Now several useful answers could remain present together.

Mira raised the needle again.

A Lumen Moth formed near her wrist and travelled through the coat toward the opposite shoulder. The Hollowsteel Needle moved with her body while Essence passed through the grip, and the turn through her hips adjusted naturally as her attention followed the moth across the rooftop.

The thrust arrived exactly where she intended.

Mira held the final position for a moment before relaxing.

The whispertail opened one eye.

Mira looked down at it.

"I think I'm getting somewhere."

The cub yawned and went back to sleep.

Mira returned to the beginning of the sequence.

Tomorrow she intended to test it properly.
