Aetheria

Chapter 20: When the Bells Went Quiet

The first bomb fell toward them while the Patchwork Jester danced beneath it, one hand lifted as though conducting music only it could hear. Mira lay against the broken road with three HP remaining, Kael had two, and the four surviving Lumen Moths around her ruined coat were dim enough that their wings barely held shape.

The whispertail crouched nearby with one rear leg dragging through the dirt, its fur scorched along one side. Kael could barely raise his greatsword, while Mira reached toward the last usable Essence inside herself and found almost nothing answering.

Her hand found the restorative vial beneath the torn edge of her coat. Kael understood immediately, dragged out his own, and both drank before the bomb reached them.

Essence returned like cold fire through pathways already strained by the fight. Mira's moths brightened while thin lines of frost, lightning and fire appeared through different channels of Kael's blade.

The bomb dropped between them. Mira raised a broad golden surface that caught the explosion at an angle, sending most of the blast into the ditch before the barrier shattered under the remaining force.

They were moving when the smoke cleared.

The Jester clapped, and its dolls rushed with it. Mira turned toward Kael instead of the advancing creatures, seeing blood covering one side of his body while his arm hung too stiffly for the damage to be superficial.

She reached for Minor Heal.

For the first time since choosing Cleric because she liked the robes, Mira stopped thinking about what else the same Essence could become. Kael needed healing, and she wanted him alive badly enough that everything else temporarily became irrelevant.

Golden-white light poured through the damaged channels of her coat and surrounded him like warm sunlight. The bleeding slowed, his breathing steadied, and the radiance followed him when he stepped forward again.

Kael did not thank her, and Mira did not need him to. He turned toward the Jester while the long-armed doll, stitched hound and scissor wielder came at him together.

The first exchange lasted only seconds. Kael let the long-armed doll overextend, carried the greatsword through its reaching limb and into the hound behind it, then opened fire near the middle of the blade only at contact so the stitched creature burst apart without interrupting the motion.

The scissor doll came from his side. Lightning travelled through the narrowest channel, the greatsword accelerated around him, and its flat sent the little creature through a tree before the blades reached his ribs.

Kael kept moving.

The weapon felt different in his hands.

Balance, flex, edge alignment, Essence pressure and recoil remained distinct, yet none of them needed to be considered separately anymore. Frost altered how the blade carried contact, lightning wanted to escape before his movement completed, and fire pushed against every closed route until he gave it somewhere useful to expand.

The Jester appeared in front of him with a thin cane and struck hard enough to nearly tear his shoulder apart. Kael gave ground, allowed the impact to travel through the sword, then used Momentum Break to turn that retreat into a returning attack while frost gathered along the section that would meet the cane again.

Ice spread across the weapon at contact. Kael switched immediately, sent lightning through the central channel and released Crescent Sever from the same continuing motion.

The Jester folded backward beneath the projected slash and lost half its hat to the rising follow-up. One bell spun into the grass, and Kael advanced before the creature's feet settled again.

Their exchange crossed the road in a blur of metal, cloth and broken stone. Gravebreaker emerged when the Jester stepped inside his lower guard, while Falling Ruin grew out of a wide recovery after the cane forced the greatsword off line.

Mira remained behind him and poured her recovered Essence into keeping him functional. The healing radiance responded to injuries as they appeared, surrounding Kael continuously instead of ending after one wound closed.

The cost drained her quickly.

Kael's sword only became more dangerous.

The Jester produced a second cane and attacked with both while dolls and bouncing red bombs crowded the road. Kael stopped trying to clear every threat separately and let his weapon carry him through the pressure, shifting grip, changing enchantment routes and using glancing impacts to build the next movement.

A cane passed his cheek because he moved only enough to clear it. A doll lunged low and lost both arms to a short cut that continued naturally into Kael's recovery, while a bomb against the broad flat of the sword became borrowed force for his next attack.

Weapon Savant held everything together.

The Jester's painted smile widened.

Then darkness swallowed the road.

The sky, trees and ground vanished into blackness. Only Kael's silhouette, Mira's healing radiance and an enormous porcelain version of the Jester's head remained visible above them.

Two white-gloved hands floated beneath it.

The Jester wiggled its fingers.

Enormous copies manifested from the darkness.

Some reached from above while others swept sideways or opened beneath them as though the road itself had become a palm. The first moved faster than Mira could follow visually.

Adaptive Cognition caught the relationships surrounding it instead.

The smaller hand moved first.

Pressure shifted.

Kael stood ahead and left.

The whispertail had lowered itself behind Mira.

She moved when the giant hand arrived.

Her hips shifted only enough to clear the closing fingers, while Kael turned his shoulders and let another palm miss him by less than the width of his sword.

The Jester laughed and multiplied the attacks.

Mira and Kael stopped trying to outrun them. They avoided only the space each manifestation actually threatened, and their movements grew increasingly economical as the darkness filled with grasping hands.

The Disciple's Body Method settled through Mira's skeletal structure without conscious adjustment. Balance, Essence, awareness and intention flowed through one another until the awkward gaps between deciding and moving disappeared.

Structural Flow bloomed through the movement.

Mira slipped between two closing hands with her coat brushing one enormous finger, then used a brief golden surface to move less than a metre away from another descending palm. Kael answered differently, keeping the greatsword between himself and the manifestations and using glancing contact to redirect momentum while lightning accelerated entries, frost stabilised contact and fire amplified the heaviest releases.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

The Jester increased the speed.

Mira stopped following individual hands and instead followed the gestures that preceded them. Kael read each interaction through the sword, sometimes dodging and sometimes allowing the flat of the greatsword to receive a portion of the force.

One enormous palm struck from his right. Kael angled the blade, allowed the impact to launch him, turned in the air and carried Falling Ruin into another manifested hand hard enough to shatter it into white cloth and black smoke.

The Jester's giant face lowered toward them.

Mira's remaining moths entered the ruined channels of her coat.

Light spread across her back.

Two enormous luminous wings unfolded, built from branching gold-white structures filled with moth-shaped fragments. Mira opened them around herself, Kael and the injured whispertail, and warm radiance filled the darkness.

Kael's wounds began closing faster.

The whispertail dragged itself into the edge of the glow and let the same warmth settle over its damaged leg.

The giant hands attacked.

Sections of the wings folded forward, broke into hundreds of luminous fragments to soften impacts and then reformed behind Mira. When two enormous palms closed around all three of them, she folded the wings inward until the light became a sphere around Kael.

The hands struck.

Cracks spread through the radiance.

The sphere shattered.

Kael came through it with lightning exploding along the greatsword.

He crossed the darkness before the manifestations recovered and drove Crescent Sever from a thrust directly into the enormous porcelain face. The mask split across one cheek, and the darkness shook.

The real Jester appeared behind Mira.

Its cane entered through the remains of her coat and threw her across the road with several ribs breaking under the impact.

HP: 1 / 94

Mira fell, and the wings collapsed.

Kael turned.

The Jester was already on him.

For several exchanges, he fought alone.

His remaining strength should have made the oversized weapon impossible, yet the swordsmanship had become frighteningly efficient. Kael changed effective reach through grip, used the pommel when the Jester stepped inside the blade and routed frost, lightning or fire only where each contact needed it.

The cane struck his shoulder. Kael turned with the force, let Momentum Break carry it into a rising diagonal, shortened the movement when the Jester blocked and drove the point forward with lightning bursting through the tip.

The porcelain mask cracked farther.

The Jester laughed directly into his face.

Kael continued.

Mira forced herself onto one arm.

Her Hollowglass coat hung from her frame in black strips, Crystal Fibre had pulled loose across the road and the ivory scarf was already beyond repair. The Hollowsteel Needle lay several metres away with its thread severed.

She looked toward Kael.

HP: 3 / 102

Mira pushed more healing into the sunlight around him.

Kael stayed upright.

The Jester summoned its dolls again, sending them pouring through the darkness. Kael ignored most of them and kept his attention on the creature controlling the battlefield.

Mira understood his choice.

She gathered every surviving fragment of Light around herself.

The damaged coat channels brightened beyond anything they had been built to endure. An incomplete pair of wings opened behind her, ragged and asymmetrical but still brilliant enough to turn the edge of the darkness white.

Mira folded them forward.

The moths disappeared into a single bead of light.

It grew until the sphere was larger than she was, with a white centre surrounded by warm gold. The approaching dolls began to smoke under its radiance.

Kael felt the light behind him.

The Jester saw it too.

Kael drove through the dolls before they could close around him. A short Crescent cleared one side, lightning accelerated the follow-through, fire tore open a second group and frost locked the Jester's cane for the brief interval he needed to change sides.

Mira released the sphere.

It engulfed Kael.

White-gold light surrounded him while every injury Mira could reach began repairing at once. The remaining moths moved inside the sphere as Kael ran through its centre.

The Jester sent the enormous hands again.

Mira guided the sphere around the first grab. Kael used the greatsword against the second and rode the impact forward, while Mira turned part of the light into a broad golden plane that diverted the third enough for him to pass beneath.

He reached the real body.

Fire, frost and lightning occupied different sections of the blade at once.

Kael attacked.

The Jester blocked the rising cut.

Momentum Break converted the collision into a reverse strike.

Kael shortened his grip and struck the mask with the pommel.

Porcelain cracked.

The Jester laughed.

Falling Ruin descended with the entire weight of the greatsword behind it.

The Jester caught the weapon between both hands.

The road exploded.

HP: 1 / 102

Mira felt Kael's body beginning to fail.

She emptied everything she had left.

The healing sphere collapsed inward and flooded through him like sunlight, repairing just enough torn tissue and failing muscle for one final movement.

Kael opened the fire channels completely.

Lightning raced toward the tip.

Frost gathered along the opposite edge.

He turned and carried the entire weapon with him.

Crescent Sever emerged through the rotation.

The slash struck the cracked mask.

Mira's remaining moths entered the same fracture.

The Jester stopped.

Its mask split.

The bells fell silent.

Darkness dissolved around them.

The evening road returned with trees standing on both sides and smoke hanging over the destroyed ground. The Patchwork Jester remained in front of Kael while one half of the porcelain mask hung loose.

Kael tried to raise the greatsword again.

The blade cracked from guard to tip.

Every elemental channel flashed once.

The sword shattered.

Black, white and silver fragments fell across the road.

The Jester looked at them.

Its shoulders began shaking with laughter.

Then it danced.

Its body spun through the fragments as though they were confetti while the edges of its patched clothing became transparent. One arm faded first, followed by its legs, yet the bells continued chiming even after there was nothing visible left to hold them.

The cracked mask remained longest.

The painted smile turned toward Mira and Kael one final time.

Then it faded like an image losing light.

The road became quiet.

Mira's Hollowsteel Needle cracked where it lay and broke into three pieces as the last Light escaped the channel. Her coat failed completely afterward, with Crystal Fibre burning through, the Hollowglass junction shattering and the Stoneback inserts falling from torn fabric.

Her scarf was destroyed.

Both gloves had split through the palms.

The satchel had torn open during the fight, leaving broken tools, shattered vials and ruined materials scattered along the road.

Kael's equipment had fared no better.

His sword was gone, his armour was ruined, one boot had torn through the side and several equipment straps had burned away. Almost everything they had built in Bellhaven now lay destroyed around them.

Neither reacted.

They collapsed beside each other.

The whispertail crawled close enough to press against Mira's ribs before its legs stopped supporting it.

Mira remained at 1 / 94 HP.

Kael remained at 1 / 102 HP.

Calling another moth felt impossible, but Mira gathered the smallest amount of Essence she could still reach and spread a faint golden warmth between them. She gave most of it to Kael, extended enough toward the whispertail to slow its deterioration and let the remaining trace stabilize the magical connections holding her own damaged skeleton together.

They lay quietly beneath the evening sky.

Kael eventually moved one hand toward where his sword should have been and found broken metal instead. He let his arm fall back beside him.

"Mira," he said weakly, and she turned her skull toward him while keeping the faint healing light alive.

Kael stared upward. "There's something I noticed a while ago."

Mira waited.

"I can't find a logout button."

The healing light trembled slightly.

"I know," Mira said, and Kael turned toward her with enough surprise that she continued before he could ask.

"I noticed after I arrived. At first I thought I was missing it, then I thought something had gone wrong with the interface, and after that there was always something else happening."

Kael was silent for several moments.

"I've been thinking the same thing," he admitted. "I thought maybe we'd wake up eventually."

Mira looked toward the cloud moving across Aetheria's sky.

She remembered losing her foot, the cold river, the taste of food despite having no flesh, the warmth of Essence, thread passing through skeletal fingers, Maelis hugging her and Kael bleeding inside sunlight she had made herself. None of it felt distant enough to dismiss.

Kael looked toward the broken sword beside him. "What if this isn't the game?" he asked, and Mira remained quiet long enough that the question settled fully between them.

"I've been wondering that too," she answered.

Neither spoke afterward.

A notification appeared before Mira.

Level increased.

Level 8 reached.

Another followed.

Level increased.

Level 9 reached.

Then came the final one.

Level increased.

Level 10 reached.

Class Advancement Available.

Mira left the advancement unopened.

Beside her, Kael's expression changed as his own notifications appeared, but he ignored them too.

Mira kept the last trace of healing alive while the sky darkened above Aetheria. Their weapons were broken, their clothing and armour were ruined, their supplies were scattered across the destroyed road and neither possessed enough HP to stand safely.

The whispertail slept against Mira's side.

Kael remained beside her.

For the first time since arriving in Aetheria, Mira stopped expecting that waking somewhere else might eventually explain everything. The thought frightened her, but she continued holding the faint light between them while the first stars appeared overhead.

They had reached Level Ten.

Neither of them cared yet.
