Chapter 8: The Old Quarry

By midday, Eastmere had turned the whispertail attack into work.

Damaged stalls were being rebuilt. Broken crates had become firewood. Hunters carried carcasses toward the guild yard, where useful materials were separated and weighed. Guards moved between the gates asking questions while merchants argued over ruined stock and compensation.

Mira sat on the edge of Tessa's workbench while the leatherworker altered her spear.

The whispertail cub occupied her lap.

It had eaten enough rabbit to lose interest in escaping, and its five tails spread across Mira's robe like a small white fan. Every few minutes, one moved independently and brushed across her arm or caught against a buckle.

Tessa had removed the spearhead.

Mira watched her fit a rounded iron cap over the opposite end of the shaft.

"Try it."

Mira took the spear and planted the new end against the floor.

The difference was immediate.

The wider cap did not slide as easily as bare wood, while the slightly flattened bottom gave her more support when she leaned her weight onto it.

She stood and walked toward the far end of the workshop.

Her right foot moved first, with the spear landing beside it to take part of her weight. The wrapped end of her left leg remained several inches above the floor as she brought it through.

She turned.

The cub raised its head to watch.

"This is better."

"I know."

Mira looked at Tessa.

The leatherworker was already putting away her tools.

Mira practiced the turn again instead of answering.

The altered spear still functioned as a weapon. Tessa had designed the cap so Mira could reverse the shaft and use the spearhead normally, although changing ends quickly with a splinted arm remained difficult.

Mira experimented with the balance.

Rather than lifting the entire weapon to reverse it, she let the shaft rotate through her good hand while using the iron-capped end against the ground as a temporary pivot. The spearhead came around much faster.

Tessa paused while putting away a file.

"Do that again."

Mira did.

The movement was still awkward, but considerably faster than trying to lift and rotate the full shaft.

Tessa watched the spearhead settle.

"Where did you learn that?"

"I didn't."

Mira planted the capped end again.

"It was taking too long the other way."

Tessa looked at her for another second before returning the file to its drawer.

"Four copper."

Mira paid without argument.

Her money supply had become considerably less satisfying since entering the market.

Tessa dropped the coins into a small box beneath the counter.

"You'll want something better if that foot stays gone."

Mira looked down at the wrapped ankle.

"It is staying gone."

"You sound certain."

"A slime took it downstream."

Tessa paused.

"Fair."

Mira's fingers tightened slightly around the spear.

The cub rolled onto its back.

One pink-tipped tail landed across her knee.

Mira moved it aside.

"Do slimes come near Eastmere often?"

Tessa looked at her.

"River slimes?"

"Any slimes."

"Enough."

Mira slowly turned her skull toward her.

Tessa laughed before she could ask what that meant.

"Mostly harmless little ones around the irrigation ditches. Larger ones gather near the marsh road after heavy rain. Why?"

Mira remembered blue gel disappearing beneath the water with her foot suspended inside it.

"I don't like them."

The cub chirped.

Mira stroked beneath its chin with one gloved finger.

"They started it."

Tessa was still smiling when someone entered the shop.

It was Bran.

The hunter looked more tired than he had earlier. Mud covered his boots almost to the knee, and something had cut three shallow lines through the leather over one shoulder.

Tessa straightened.

"Back already?"

"Didn't get far."

Bran placed something on the workbench.

A tuft of white-grey fur.

Mira recognized whispertail fur immediately.

This one was wet, and a dark stain clung to the roots.

The cub changed before Mira could reach for it.

Its head snapped toward Bran.

All five tails rose.

The small body went rigid in her lap.

Bran noticed.

His eyes narrowed.

Mira gathered the cub against her robe.

It did not struggle.

"Where did you find that?" Tessa asked.

"Quarry road. About half a mile beyond the north gate."

Bran removed a folded piece of cloth from his belt and opened it beside the fur.

Several fragments of translucent material rested inside.

Pale green.

Mira leaned forward.

At first, she thought they were pieces of glass.

Then one sagged slightly beneath its own weight.

Her hand stopped.

"No."

Bran looked at her.

Mira picked up the fragment.

It was cool and soft enough to bend between her fingers. A faint residue remained on her glove.

Slime.

Tessa looked between them.

"That's from the quarry?"

"All over the place."

Bran rested both hands against the counter.

"The whispertails weren't attacking Eastmere. They were running."

Mira looked down at the cub.

Its ears had flattened.

Bran continued.

"Found three dead in the woods. Two more near the quarry road. No arrows, no blades. Bodies looked burned in places, but there wasn't any fire."

"Acid?" Mira asked.

"Maybe."

"What happened to the exposed bones?"

Bran glanced at her.

"Some were showing."

"Were they damaged?"

"Soft."

Mira's attention returned immediately to the fragment in her hand.

That was worse.

Tessa folded her arms.

"What kind of slime dissolves bone?"

"Not the kind we get around here."

Bran took another object from his pouch.

A round stone, dark grey and uneven across its surface.

"This was inside one of the dead cats."

Mira did not touch it.

"What is it?"

"Don't know."

Tessa leaned closer.

Apparently neither did she.

The cub suddenly hissed.

Mira looked down.

Its eyes had fixed on the stone.

Bran moved the object slightly closer.

The cub exploded out of Mira's lap.

Five tails flared as its claws caught her robe. It scrambled across her chest, climbed her shoulder and wedged itself behind her scarf.

Mira nearly lost her balance and caught the workbench.

"Stop."

A growl vibrated behind her skull.

Bran immediately moved the stone away.

The sound weakened.

Mira reached behind her neck and rested her fingers against the cub's back.

Its fur stood almost straight up.

"What happened near the quarry?" she asked.

Bran shook his head.

"We don't know. Guild's sending a proper party."

"When?"

"This afternoon."

Mira looked toward the window.

The north-eastern hills were visible between the rooftops.

The cub pressed itself more firmly against the back of her scarf.

Tessa noticed where Mira was looking.

"No."

Mira turned.

"I didn't say anything."

"You were about to."

"I wasn't."

Tessa stared at her.

Mira considered that.

"I was thinking."

"Think somewhere inside the walls."

Bran wrapped the strange stone and slime fragments again.

"You shouldn't be anywhere near that place in your condition."

Mira looked down at herself.

One foot was missing, one arm remained splinted, several ribs were still damaged, and she was only Level 2.

The assessment was reasonable.

She disliked it anyway.

"What level are the slimes?"

"We haven't seen one."

"You found residue."

"And dead whispertails."

"Which means something fought them."

Mira looked toward the cub.

It had stopped growling but remained hidden behind her shoulder.

Bran secured the samples.

"The guild will post a notice once they decide what they're dealing with."

"Can I see it?"

"The notice?"

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from NovelPhoenix. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

"Yes."

"Anyone can."

That solved part of the problem.

Mira could learn more without wandering into the woods half-broken.

Tessa continued watching her carefully.

Mira slid from the workbench and reached for her spear.

"I'm going back to the temple."

Tessa visibly relaxed.

"For once, an excellent decision."

Mira ignored the comment and adjusted the satchel across her body.

The cub refused to leave her scarf.

She allowed it to stay.

Outside, the market had recovered enough that people were shopping again.

Mira passed the expensive black-and-ivory mantle.

She slowed.

The gold embroidery caught the midday light, and one broad section of fabric would have wrapped properly around her skull before falling across both shoulders.

Mira checked the coins in her pouch.

Then kept walking.

Priorities were unpleasant.

The temple was busier when she returned.

Two people injured during the whispertail attack occupied treatment rooms. Elaine moved between them carrying fresh bandages, while Harven stood near the central table speaking with one of the town guards.

Corin was awake.

Mira saw him through an open doorway.

He was sitting against several pillows with his injured leg extended in front of him.

He noticed her almost immediately.

Then he noticed the white head emerging from her scarf.

"Mira."

She entered.

Corin stared at the cub.

"Why do you have that?"

"I found it."

"That's a whispertail."

"Yes."

"It has five tails."

"I counted them."

Corin rubbed a hand over his face.

Mira lowered herself onto the stool beside his bed.

The cub climbed from her shoulder onto her lap and sniffed toward Corin.

His expression softened despite himself.

"Where did you find it?"

"During the attack."

"You kept it?"

Mira stroked the fur along its back.

"It was injured."

Corin reached toward it.

The cub opened its mouth.

He stopped.

"Friendly?"

"Sometimes."

Corin withdrew his hand.

"How are you?"

Mira looked at his leg.

"I was going to ask you that."

"I can stand now."

Corin glanced at her splinted arm.

"And your foot?"

"Still gone."

"I hoped Harven might have some trick."

"He doesn't."

Corin's expression tightened.

Mira had no desire to sit through sympathy.

She changed the subject.

"Do you know the old quarry north-east of town?"

That worked.

Corin's attention sharpened.

"Why?"

"The whispertails came from there."

"Who told you?"

"Bran."

Corin shifted against the pillows.

"The quarry was abandoned years ago."

"Why?"

"I don't know. Stone stopped being worth taking, I think."

"Are there slimes there?"

"Usually? No."

Mira's hand stopped against the cub's back.

"Bran found slime residue."

Corin looked toward the doorway.

"What kind?"

"He doesn't know."

Harven entered carrying a cup.

"Neither does the guild."

Mira looked up.

He handed the drink to Corin.

"The patrol brought samples."

"Can I see them?"

Harven gave her a long look.

Mira waited.

"They're in the guildhall."

"When can I go?"

"After I look at your arm."

Mira held it out immediately.

Harven's mouth twitched.

He sat beside her and removed the outer bandage.

The fracture had remained aligned.

The bone itself had not repaired.

Harven pressed gently around the break while Mira described what she felt. When he finished, he replaced the splints and wrapped the arm again.

"You're adapting surprisingly well."

Mira flexed her fingers.

"I don't have much choice."

"You always have choices."

She looked at him.

Harven tied the final knot.

"Some of them are simply bad."

Mira considered that and found nothing to argue with.

Harven stood.

"The guild asked for Clerics who can identify corrosive or corrupted Essence. Elaine is going after midday."

Mira looked toward the door.

"To the quarry?"

"To the guildhall first."

"Can I go with her?"

Harven began to answer.

Elaine appeared behind him.

"Yes."

Harven turned.

Elaine entered while fastening the clasp on a heavier travelling mantle. A short mace hung from her belt.

Harven frowned.

"She cannot walk properly."

"She walked here."

"Using a spear."

"Then she has a spear."

Mira liked Elaine more every time she spoke.

Harven looked at Mira.

"Guildhall. You are not joining the field party."

Mira nodded.

That was enough for now.

Elaine left to finish preparing.

Mira remained beside Corin while he drank.

The cub eventually climbed onto the edge of his blanket and sniffed his hand.

Corin stayed still.

After several cautious seconds, the cub touched its nose to his fingers.

"See?" Mira said. "Sometimes."

Corin smiled.

The cub bit him.

He jerked his hand away.

Mira picked it up before it could repeat the attempt.

"Sorry."

Corin examined the tiny marks on his finger.

"I'll survive."

Mira placed the cub inside the satchel.

It immediately climbed halfway out.

She tightened the flap enough that only its head remained visible.

The guildhall stood near Eastmere's northern gate.

Unlike the temple, it had apparently been built to survive noise.

People filled the main room.

Hunters in mud-stained armour crowded around long tables. Guards carried reports between desks. A large board covered one wall, layered with notices pinned beneath wooden markers.

Mira's attention went there first.

Most notices concerned ordinary work around Eastmere: missing livestock, road escorts, herbs required by an apothecary, goblins near the southern farms and rewards for wolf pelts.

Then she found the new notice.

Investigation Request: Old Eastmere Quarry

Unusual monster movement has been reported along the north-east woodland and abandoned quarry road.

Confirmed:

Whispertails displaced from established territory.

Multiple dead or injured beasts.

Unidentified slime residue.

Possible corrosive Essence exposure.

Quarry interior status unknown.

Recommended Level: 6+

Investigation Party forming today.

Rewards issued for verified information, samples and confirmed threats.

Level six.

Mira was Level 2.

Elaine joined her.

"Now you know why you're staying here."

"I wasn't planning to fight anything."

Elaine looked at her.

Mira considered the statement.

"I wasn't planning to fight anything at the quarry."

"Better."

A man near the centre of the guildhall called for the investigation party.

Five people gathered.

Elaine joined them.

Mira recognized Bran among the hunters. There was also a heavily armoured man carrying a broad shield, a woman with a bow taller than Mira and a young man in dark red robes whose staff held a green stone near its head.

The guild officer spread a map across the table.

Mira moved closer.

Nobody objected.

The old quarry lay north-east of Eastmere beyond a wooded ridge. A main road had once served carts travelling between the quarry and town, although several sections had become overgrown.

Bran indicated the places where bodies had been discovered.

"First here. Then two more farther north."

The archer traced the route.

"They were moving south-west."

"Toward Eastmere," Elaine said.

The guild officer nodded.

"Tracks suggest more than one group."

Mira studied the marked positions.

The bodies formed a rough trail away from the quarry.

Something had driven the whispertails out.

The officer added another marker.

"The residue was strongest here."

The road's final bend.

Immediately before the quarry entrance.

"Any disappearances?" Elaine asked.

"Two trappers haven't checked in. Could be unrelated. Their usual route passes north of the quarry."

Mira looked toward Bran.

"What did the residue look like where you found it?"

Bran frowned slightly.

"Look like?"

"Was it pooled? Spread across the ground? On the trees?"

"Mostly streaks. Some patches on stone."

"How high?"

He thought about it.

"Different heights."

"Did the streaks run downward?"

"Some did."

Mira returned her attention to the map.

Residue at different heights did not fit particularly well with one large slime travelling along the road.

"Several slimes?"

The red-robed man answered.

"Almost certainly."

He tapped the green stone mounted in his staff.

"Slimes divide under certain conditions. If something altered a colony at the quarry, numbers may matter more than individual strength."

Mira immediately disliked the phrase slime colony.

The cub's head rose from her satchel.

Its ears flattened.

Mira touched the top of its head.

The guild officer noticed.

"Where did you get that?"

Several nearby conversations quietened.

Mira looked down.

The cub looked back.

Five tails slowly appeared from beneath the satchel flap.

The officer stared.

Bran closed his eyes briefly.

Elaine looked at Mira.

"You weren't planning to mention it?"

"I hadn't decided how."

The officer approached without reaching for the cub.

"Five tails."

"Yes."

"Whispertails don't develop five tails as cubs."

Mira's attention sharpened.

"How many should it have?"

"One."

Bran stepped closer.

"Adults around here occasionally develop a second after evolving."

Mira looked down at the tiny creature.

The cub licked one paw.

Five tails waved behind it.

"Is five bad?"

The officer shook his head.

"I don't know what five means."

That interested Mira much more than reassurance would have.

The officer crouched.

The cub watched him.

"Where exactly did you find it?"

Mira described the cloth stall.

"Before the attack?"

"During."

"Was it travelling with the others?"

"I don't know."

The officer looked toward Bran.

"Any tracks from something this small?"

"Too much damage in the market."

The cub's ears turned suddenly toward the map.

Mira felt it shift before understanding why.

It climbed from the satchel.

She caught it beneath the chest.

The cub twisted toward the table.

All five tails spread.

A growl began.

Everyone watched.

Mira lowered it carefully onto the edge of the map.

The cub sniffed the parchment.

It walked past Eastmere and followed the marked quarry road.

Then it stopped directly over the quarry.

Its back arched.

The little animal hissed at the ink.

Derris leaned forward.

"That's useful."

Mira ran her fingers along the cub's back until the raised fur began settling.

The guild officer studied the map.

"Whatever happened there, it remembers."

Elaine secured her mace.

"We'll know more before dark."

The party began gathering its equipment.

Mira lifted the cub from the map.

Something about its reaction bothered her.

It had responded similarly to the strange stone Bran carried.

Mira looked toward the wrapped samples on another table.

"Can I examine the slime residue while they're gone?"

The guild officer considered her.

"What for?"

"I've fought river slimes."

A few nearby hunters looked amused.

Mira continued.

"They took my foot."

The amusement disappeared.

"I know how normal river slime reacts when it's cut, struck or exposed to Radiant Spark. If these samples respond differently, that gives you something to compare."

Derris looked toward her properly for the first time.

The guild officer glanced at Elaine.

Elaine nodded.

"Let her."

A small workroom was cleared at the back of the guildhall.

The samples arrived in sealed ceramic dishes.

Mira sat at the table with her spear against the chair and the cub curled in her lap.

The first sample was pale green.

The second was almost transparent.

Dark streaks floated inside the third.

Mira touched none of them directly.

She used a metal probe.

The green residue stretched when lifted and retracted after release.

She separated a small portion.

The edges began flowing together.

Slowly.

The river slime on the bridge had rejoined much faster.

Mira repeated the cut at a different width.

The thinner separation closed first.

She tried again, making the opening wider.

Slower.

Mira placed the pieces back together manually.

They joined almost immediately.

She wrote that down.

The material could still restore its structure. Distance affected how quickly.

She pressed a small amount against wood.

Nothing.

Leather produced no immediate reaction either.

Derris had left several test strips and basic materials before departing.

Mira looked over them.

Water seemed obvious for something called a slime.

She added one drop.

The reaction was instant.

The sample expanded.

Mira pulled the dish farther away.

The small amount of gel had almost doubled in volume.

The cub woke.

Mira stared at the dish.

She added a second drop.

The material expanded again.

This time she stopped before touching it further.

The surface trembled.

Gel began drawing inward.

A cloudy shape gathered near the centre.

Mira pushed her chair back.

The bead became more distinct.

"No."

The sample lifted from the ceramic dish.

A name appeared.

Diluted Quarry Slime

Level 1

The slime bounced.

It landed directly in Mira's lap.

The whispertail cub screamed.

Mira screamed louder.

The chair tipped backward.

All three hit the floor.

Gel spread across Mira's robe.

The cub launched itself onto her skull, claws scrabbling over bone and glasses while five tails covered most of her vision.

Mira grabbed for the slime.

It slipped beneath her hand.

The cub jumped from her head.

The slime bounced after it.

"Absolutely not."

Mira seized the metal probe and stabbed.

The slime changed direction.

The probe struck the floor.

The cub raced beneath the table.

The slime followed.

Mira tried to stand, grabbed the wrong end of the spear and planted the spearhead into the floorboard.

She nearly fell again.

The workroom door opened.

A guild clerk stared inside.

Mira was half-standing against the table with her scarf hanging across one eye. The cub had climbed halfway up a shelf, and the newly formed slime bounced beneath it.

"Mira?"

"Get me a jar."

The clerk remained where he was.

"A jar."

He ran.

The slime jumped.

Mira swung the padded end of the spear.

The shaft caught it in midair and sent it into the wall.

The creature flattened.

Mira moved after it.

Pursuing anything indoors with one foot and a support spear was difficult enough before the target started bouncing.

The slime hit the floor.

Mira reversed the spear around the iron cap the way she had practiced at Tessa's.

The spearhead came around.

She stabbed for the forming core.

The slime shifted.

Mira missed.

It wrapped around the spearhead.

She pulled.

The gel climbed farther along the shaft.

Mira started to raise the weapon for another strike against the floor.

A white blur dropped from the shelf.

The cub hit the slime.

Its front paws disappeared into the gel.

The slime compressed violently beneath its weight.

The cub immediately sprang away, shaking both paws.

The core had been driven toward the side of the creature.

Mira saw it.

Radiant Spark formed in her palm.

She did not release the broad flash she had first learned.

The core was smaller than her fist.

That was all she needed to hit.

The light gathered into a tight point against two fingers.

Mira fired.

A thin streak of gold crossed the room.

It struck the cloudy bead.

The core cracked.

The slime convulsed.

The cub flattened its ears.

Mira drove the spearhead through the fracture.

The bead split.

Green gel collapsed across the floorboards.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Mira looked at her hand.

The light had been narrower than the Spark she had used against the whispertail.

Much narrower.

She had barely thought about doing it.

The core had been small, so making the spell any larger would have wasted most of the discharge.

Her attention moved to the cub.

It was vigorously shaking one front paw.

"Come here."

The cub backed away.

"Your foot is covered in slime."

It backed away again.

Mira leaned on the spear.

"I know something about losing feet."

The cub appeared unmoved by the argument.

Mira caught it when it tried to pass the chair.

She checked both paws.

The gel had not visibly damaged them.

The cub immediately climbed her arm and settled across her shoulder with a deeply offended expression.

The guild clerk returned carrying a jar.

He slowed when he saw the floor.

Mira pointed toward the remains.

"Put that in it."

He obeyed.

Mira returned to the table.

Her interest had survived.

Her patience had not.

She examined the remaining samples considerably more carefully.

The dark-streaked gel did not react strongly to water.

It reacted to Essence.

Mira discovered that when she began forming Radiant Spark near the dish without releasing it.

The dark lines shifted toward her hand.

She moved the gathered light slightly to the left.

They followed.

Mira moved it right.

The streaks followed again.

She reduced the amount of Essence held in the unfinished skill until the glow around her fingers was barely visible.

The response weakened.

Mira added a little more.

The dark material pressed against the nearest side of the dish.

She stopped.

The sample relaxed.

Mira looked down at her hand.

The reaction was proportional.

She formed another tiny concentration of Radiant Spark at the tip of one finger.

The streaks moved toward it.

Then Mira shifted the gathered Essence from that fingertip to the next without allowing the skill to discharge.

The dark lines changed direction.

The cub's head followed the movement as well.

Mira did it again.

Index finger.

Middle.

Ring.

Three separate positions in quick succession.

The gel followed each.

Mira paused.

Radiant Spark had always formed around her palm because that was how she had first used it.

Apparently, it did not particularly care.

She let the spell disperse.

Then she gathered a smaller point of light above her index finger.

It appeared.

Mira moved the finger.

The light moved with it.

She drew it several centimetres away from her hand.

The glow stretched.

For less than a second, a tiny bead of golden light separated from her fingertip.

Then it collapsed.

Mira stared at the empty space.

The cub reached one paw toward where it had been.

Mira tried again.

The second attempt lasted even less time.

She stopped.

That was not what she was supposed to be investigating.

Mira returned her attention to the dish and wrote down what she had observed.

The quarry material reacted to Essence as a resource or stimulus.

Whether it fed on the energy or merely sensed it remained unclear.

The first sample could rapidly increase its volume through water.

If similar slimes occupied an underground quarry containing a water source, that could explain how the population had grown quickly enough to displace local predators.

Mira looked toward the northern wall.

The investigation party had already left.

Five people walking into a colony with active skills might be announcing themselves to creatures capable of tracking Essence.

Mira stood.

Too quickly.

Her missing foot reminded her.

She caught the table, recovered with the spear and placed the cub inside the satchel.

The guild officer remained in the main hall.

Mira reached him.

"The party needs to know something."

He looked up from a report.

"What?"

"The slimes react to Essence."

His expression changed.

"And water makes at least one sample grow."

"How much?"

"A small piece nearly doubled twice."

The officer stood.

"Can you reproduce it?"

"Yes."

He called for a runner.

Mira followed them back to the workroom.

She demonstrated with the remaining green sample.

One drop of water caused immediate expansion.

The officer leaned closer.

Mira added a second.

More growth.

The surface began pulling inward.

"Stop there."

Mira did.

The runner received instructions and sprinted toward the north gate.

Mira looked at the sample.

The officer remained beside her.

"You may have just saved them trouble."

"Maybe."

Two days in Aetheria had already given Mira enough reasons to distrust conclusions made before the evidence arrived.

The cub climbed out of the satchel and settled beside her hand.

Mira touched one pink-tipped tail.

Outside, a bell rang from the northern gate.

A second followed.

Then a third rang before the previous note had finished echoing.

The guild officer turned sharply.

Conversation in the main hall stopped.

Mira heard boots running outside.

A guard burst through the guildhall entrance.

"North gate!"

The officer moved toward him.

"What happened?"

The guard was breathing hard.

"Someone's coming down the quarry road."

"Bran's party?"

The guard shook his head.

"One person."

Mira stood.

"Who?"

The guard looked around the room.

"Kid. Thirteen or fourteen, maybe. Strange clothes. Says he came from somewhere called Earth."

Mira's hand slipped from the table.

For the first time since the character creator collapsed, everything else in Eastmere disappeared from her attention.

"Earth?"
