Chapter 2132: Clash In The Underground Cavern

The gemstone light settled into a steady, cold glow. Shadows stretched long across the floating platforms and the broken rooftops of the old buildings below. Dust drifted lazily through the beams, disturbed only by the slow movement of air that had no clear source.

Alice’s squad held their formation without a spoken order. Lightning flickered faintly around Alice’s fingers; earth elemental energy thickened under the Dual Elementalist’s boots; several others quietly reinforced their defenses. No one broke ranks. The two Ninth-stage auras pressed against them like a physical weight, heavier than the cold that still clung to their clothes.

One of the Ninth-stage Sovereign Gnomes stepped forward on a wide ledge of dark stone. His skin was the color of old ash, and a thin scar ran from the corner of his mouth to his ear. He studied the twelve humans with open amusement.

"Two Eighth-stage Sovereigns," he said, his voice carrying easily across the open space. "No wonder you boldly chased our scouting party all the way here... or should I say stupidly?"

The second Ninth-stage Gnome remained silent, arms folded, eyes half-lidded as if the entire situation bored him. Around them the weaker Gnomes shifted, the Seventh-stage Sovereigns already summoning their puppets.

Lewis’s jaw tightened. He kept his voice low, meant only for Alice. "Two of them are Ninth-stage Sovereigns. If they both move at once..."

"I know." Alice’s reply was just as quiet. Her gaze never left the scarred Gnome. She could feel the suppressed pressure of the cavern still dulling her mental sense, limiting how far she could read the space. That alone made every calculation harder.

The scarred Gnome tilted his head. "You’re thinking of running. There is nowhere to run. The way you came is closed, and the rest of this place does not belong to you." He gestured lazily toward the old buildings below. "These ruins have been ours long before your Faction even came to existence."

A low murmur of laughter rose from several of the Gnomes. The only Eighth-stage Sovereign among them—the same one who had led the scouting party Alice’s group had chased for days—brought out his puppet. The construct radiated an Eighth-stage aura as it solidified beside him.

Alice’s eyes flicked briefly to that Gnome before returning to the scarred Ninth-stage. Her voice stayed calm and clear. "You sealed the exit. That means you want something more than a quick kill."

The scarred Gnome’s smile widened a fraction. "Observant. We could crush you here, yes. But information has value. Your presence means the Asterope Faction is paying closer attention to this region than we preferred. We would like to know how much you have already reported... and who else is coming."

Behind Alice, Sara’s fingers tightened around the tablet until the wood creaked. One of the younger men shifted his weight, ready to move the moment the order came. Lewis’s lightning had begun to gather more openly along his arms, the air around him sharpening with ozone.

Alice did not look back at them. She kept her eyes on the two Ninth-stage Gnomes and the growing number of puppets taking shape in the half-light.

"You’re not getting any of that," she said.

The scarred Gnome’s expression did not change, but the pressure in the cavern thickened. The second Ninth-stage finally opened his eyes fully. Below them, more puppets dropped onto the ancient rooftops with soft, solid impacts that echoed longer than they should have.

The distant drip of water continued, steady and indifferent, marking the last seconds of stillness before the cavern would erupt.

The scarred Gnome’s smile faded into something colder. He studied Alice for a long moment, as if weighing how much trouble crushing them would actually cost.

"Pity," he said at last. "I almost hoped you would be reasonable."

He raised one hand. The gesture was small, almost casual, yet every weaker Gnome moved at once. Several Seventh-stage Sovereign puppets dropped from the higher ledges and landed on the ancient rooftops below, their weight sending thin cracks through stone that had stood for centuries. The Eighth-stage Sovereign puppets beside the scouting leader flexed its clawed hands, black mist curling between its fingers.

Alice’s squad answered without needing a spoken command. Lightning coiled tighter around Alice’s arms. Earth elemental energy thickened beneath the Dual Elementalist’s feet, ready to raise barriers at a moment’s notice. Two of the women in the rear shifted closer together, their auras linking in a quiet defensive formation. Lewis’s lightning had already begun to spark openly along the length of his spear; the sharp scent of ozone cut through the cold, mineral air of the cavern.

The second Ninth-stage Gnome finally moved. He stepped off his ledge and descended in a slow, controlled drift until he hovered at the same height as the scarred one. His eyes, now fully open, carried no amusement, only the flat assessment of someone deciding the most efficient way to end a fight.

"Enough talk," he said. His voice was quieter than the scarred Gnome’s, yet it carried farther. "Take the two Eighth-stage alive if possible. Kill the rest."

The words settled over the humans like a second layer of cold.

Alice’s expression did not change, but her weight shifted half a step forward. "Lewis. Left side. Sara, stay behind the line and keep that tablet ready, if anything interferes with our senses again, I want to know the moment it starts. Everyone else, pair up. No one fights alone."

The orders were short, precise, and spoken just loud enough for her own people to hear. The squad adjusted positions in a single smooth movement, closing the gaps that the open space had forced on them. The Dual Elementalist stamped one foot; a low ridge of stone rose in a shallow arc in front of the formation, giving them at least a token barrier against the first wave.

The scarred Gnome watched the small adjustment with mild interest. "Still trying to organize. Admirable, but pointless."

He flicked two fingers.

Three Seventh-stage Sovereign puppets launched from the rooftops at once, black limbs outstretched, hands aimed at the human line. At the same time the Eighth-stage Sovereign puppet beside the scouting leader vaulted upward, angling straight for Lewis.

Alice did not wait for the puppets to close the distance. A dense spear of lightning formed in her right hand and shot forward, cracking the air as it crossed the open space. It struck the lead puppet squarely in the chest. The puppet staggered mid-flight, dark energy sputtering, but did not fall. The other two split left and right, trying to flank.

Lewis met the Eighth-stage puppet head-on. His spear became a white-blue blur, each thrust trailing afterimages of lightning. The puppet blocked with both arms, the impact sending a visible shockwave through the cold air. Sparks and black mist exploded outward where their attacks met.

Below them, more puppets began to climb the broken walls of the old buildings, using the ruined architecture as cover while they closed in. The two Ninth-stage Gnomes remained where they were, watching, content for now to let the lower ranks test the humans’ strength.

Alice’s second bolt of lightning lanced out, forcing one of the flanking puppets to veer aside. She could already feel the pressure of the cavern still dulling the edges of her perception. Every calculation had to be made faster, every movement more deliberate. There would be no room for error once the Ninth-stage Sovereign pair decided to enter the fight themselves.

The distant drip of water continued high above, steady and unconcerned, while the first true clashes of elemental force lit the ancient ruins in brief, violent flashes of light and shadow.
