The border of the Pyre region came into view after several days of steady travel across open plains and low mountain ridges.
Grey and Reynolds had crossed multiple territories since leaving the Asterope Faction. Along the way they confirmed what the Asterope Faction Leader had told them: most regions were under far less pressure than the Dixon Region. Many towns still operated almost normally, and the roads between them remained relatively calm. The contrast with the Azure Continent, where the war had shaken nearly every corner of the land, felt even sharper now that they had seen both sides with their own eyes.
As they neared the border, Grey’s eyes caught a caravan moving slowly along the pathway below. Dust rose behind the wheels. The driver cracked his whip, urging the horses to pick up speed as if eager to leave the open stretch behind. Reynolds noticed Grey slow for a moment and followed his gaze.
"What is it?"
Grey shook his head. "Nothing important. Let’s keep moving."
He took the lead again. Reynolds gave the caravan one last glance before flying after him, the afternoon wind carrying the dry scent of grass and distant smoke.
A few hours later they stood at the main entrance of the Pyrmond Faction.
A quiet wave of nostalgia settled over Grey as he looked down the long stone path that led to the gates. When they had first arrived on the Aurora Continent years ago, he had been the last of his friends to join a Faction. The place still carried that memory in the familiar arrangement of the walls and the way the mountain ridges framed the entrance.
They reached the gate. Just as Grey raised a hand toward it, a young man in his early twenties stepped out from the side, expression cautious and alert.
"State your business."
Grey searched his storage ring for a moment before realizing his identity token was not there. A quick mental inquiry to Void confirmed the black cat had it. He retrieved the token, showed it to the guard, and waited while the young man verified its authenticity with a short pulse of mental energy. Once satisfied, the guard returned the token and stepped aside, opening the way.
Inside the Faction grounds the streets felt both familiar and changed. The last time Grey had walked these paths, he had been preparing to enter the Pyro World with other members of the Faction. Back then the hidden Factions had only just begun to reappear, eager to share their older knowledge with the new generation of geniuses in the fight against the Gnomes. Now the atmosphere was heavier. Fewer people moved about the open courtyards, and those who did carried the quiet tension of continuous war.
Grey led Reynolds through the streets toward his old residence. Along the way he checked the place Keith usually stayed, but found no sign of him. While he was settling the few things he had brought, the identity token at his waist flashed once. A quick scan with his mental sense brought up the message: Faction Leader Bertram was summoning him to the manor.
Every Sovereign token in the Faction carried a quiet alert function. The moment Grey had stepped onto the grounds, Bertram had been notified.
"Let’s go meet the Faction Leader," Grey said, tapping Reynolds lightly on the shoulder.
The manor sat toward the eastern edge of the Faction, where the mountain slopes rose more steeply. When they arrived, Faction Leader Bertram was already waiting in the open courtyard, pacing slowly across the worn stone. He looked up at the sound of their approach, and a genuine smile spread across his face.
"Grey, my boy. It’s good to see you."
Grey stepped into the courtyard with steady strides. "Faction Leader. You’re looking well." He glanced around the quiet space, noting the absence of the usual attendants. "Though you seem a little tense. Something on your mind?"
Bertram let out a short breath and sat down heavily on the stone bench, resting both hands on his knees. The lines around his eyes were deeper than Grey remembered. "What else could it be? You must have seen the state of the region on your way in. For some reason the Gnomes have fixed their attention on us more heavily than on the surrounding areas. I’ve already sent formal requests for support to the neighboring Factions, but so far none of them have answered."
Grey nodded. He and Reynolds had indeed noticed the thicker presence of Gnome forces as they approached the Pyre region. They had even cleared out a few smaller groups along the road. When the Asterope Faction Leader had described the situation here as worse than Dixon, Grey had not expected the difference to be this clear.
Bertram looked up and placed a firm hand on Grey’s shoulder. "It’s fortunate you arrived when you did. I need someone capable in Cinderloch City. Our people there are under real and constant pressure."
"When do you want me to leave?" Grey asked.
"As soon as you’re ready. Ideally now."
Grey inclined his head in acceptance. He turned to go, then paused at the edge of the courtyard. "Do you know where Keith is?"
Bertram’s expression softened slightly. Everyone in the Faction knew of the solid relationship between Grey and Keith.
"He’s in Emberlyn City with Elder Varis. They’re handling the defense on that side."
Grey was familiar with both the city and the Elder. Varis was one of the more reclusive Peak Sovereigns of the Faction; their paths had crossed only a few times, usually during major expeditions or critical meetings.
"Understood."
Grey and Reynolds left the manor without further delay and headed straight out of the Faction grounds, turning their path toward Cinderloch City. The sun hung lower in the sky now, casting long shadows across the mountain ridges that surrounded the Pyrmond Faction. Behind them the gates closed quietly. Ahead, the road toward the embattled city stretched out under a sky that already carried the faint haze of distant fighting.
