AFTER BEING EXILED: MY SISTER AND I BUILD HIDDEN CIVILIZATIONS
Chapter 32 - 31: The Classless Heir ReturnsChapter 32: Chapter 31: The Classless Heir Returns
The black Authority Band screamed for exactly twelve seconds.
Then it cracked.
Not across the surface.
Through the center.
White light flooded the infirmary as EVE’s medical systems pressed against Seraphine’s root connection from one side while Family Authority anchored Elara from the other.
Arin stood beside the chamber without moving.
Lucan remained near Elara’s head.
Lyra held his hand.
Serena had stopped crying.
Guardian Zero watched through the reinforced observation glass.
A-01 stood behind Arin.
Nobody spoke.
The percentage changed.
«ELARA CONSCIOUSNESS:
57%.
ADMINISTRATOR CONTROL:
19%.
ROOT LINK:
24%.»
Then again.
«63%.
14%.
23%.»
Seraphine’s voice erupted from inside the chamber.
"You have no idea what she contains!"
Arin’s expression did not change.
"Good."
Elara’s body convulsed.
The black veins beneath her skin retreated toward her wrist.
"You cannot separate Preservation Authority from me!"
"Not trying to."
"You need me!"
"No."
The answer came so simply that Seraphine fell silent for a heartbeat.
Arin leaned slightly closer to the glass.
"That’s the mistake everyone keeps making."
The black Authority Band began pulling away from Elara’s skin.
"You all think being useful makes you necessary."
A-01’s mask lit.
«ROOT SEPARATION:
71%.»
Arin continued.
"EVE is useful."
EVE’s eyes flickered.
"Guardian Zero is useful."
A low rumble came from outside.
"Lucan is occasionally useful."
Lucan looked offended.
Lyra almost laughed.
"And none of them get to own this family because of it."
Seraphine’s voice sharpened.
"I built Elysium."
"Then you should have learned what a home is."
The Band tore free.
Elara screamed.
White light filled everything.
For one terrible second, Arin couldn’t see her.
Then something black exploded from the chamber.
Not a body.
A shape.
A woman’s outline made from smoke and silver symbols.
Seraphine.
A-01 moved instantly.
Its spear drove through the projection.
EVE sealed the chamber.
Guardian Zero roared.
Family Authority flared.
Seraphine’s form twisted.
Her silver eyes locked onto Arin.
"This changes nothing."
Arin watched her without blinking.
"It changed my mother."
The projection began collapsing.
"That’s enough for today."
Her face distorted with rage.
"You think I am trapped beneath your city?"
"No."
Arin’s voice remained calm.
"I think I know where one of your relays is."
That changed her expression.
Only slightly.
Enough.
Arin smiled.
Then Seraphine vanished.
The broken black Authority Band hit the floor.
Silence.
The medical chamber opened.
Arin moved before anyone else.
Elara lay motionless.
No black veins.
No silver eyes.
Only pale skin and shallow breathing.
He reached toward her hand.
Before he touched it, her fingers moved.
Closed around his.
Arin froze.
Her eyes opened.
Green.
Entirely green.
"Arin."
His throat tightened.
"Mother."
Elara smiled weakly.
Then looked past him.
Lyra stood completely still.
For once, his little sister had no words.
Elara’s expression broke.
"Lyra?"
That was all it took.
Lyra ran forward.
Arin barely moved aside before she climbed halfway onto the medical bed and wrapped both arms around their mother.
Elara held her.
Weakly.
Desperately.
"I’m sorry."
Lyra buried her face against her.
"You took too long."
Elara laughed through tears.
"Yes."
"Very long."
"I know."
Lucan looked away.
Arin noticed.
Elara did too.
"Lucan."
The older brother went still.
For several seconds, he didn’t move.
Then slowly turned.
Elara held one hand toward him.
He stared at it.
Arin said nothing.
This wasn’t his decision.
Eventually, Lucan crossed the room.
Elara touched his face.
"You survived."
Lucan swallowed.
"Apparently everyone is disappointed about that."
A broken laugh escaped her.
Then he lowered his forehead against her hand.
No one interrupted.
For perhaps one minute, House Elysium stopped being a system.
A city.
A mystery.
A battlefield.
It became exactly what Arin had wanted from the beginning.
A home.
Then EVE ruined the moment.
"Founder."
Arin closed his eyes briefly.
"Of course."
"Sir Roland has departed."
"Good."
"Additional information has arrived."
Arin looked toward her.
"What?"
EVE projected a map.
Valerius territory.
Multiple red markers surrounded the estate.
Arin counted quickly.
More than before.
"Coalition reinforcements?"
"Likely."
Lucan moved closer.
A separate marker appeared.
Black.
He recognized it immediately.
"Hollow Crown."
Arin looked at him.
"Vaelor?"
"Probably."
Elara’s hand tightened around Lyra.
"Vaelor."
Everyone turned.
Arin approached the bed.
"You know him."
Elara’s face hardened.
"Yes."
"How well?"
"Well enough to know he won’t attack the estate for territory."
Lucan’s eyes narrowed.
"Then why?"
Elara looked at Arin.
"For the Valerius vault."
Arin frowned.
House Valerius had several vaults.
Money.
Artifacts.
Hunter weapons.
Family records.
None seemed worth this scale of operation.
"What’s inside?"
Elara closed her eyes.
"Something I hid."
Arin waited.
She looked at him again.
"An Elysium access core."
Silence.
Lucan swore softly.
Arin’s expression flattened.
"Of course."
Lyra looked between them.
"Is everything in our old house secretly connected to Elysium?"
Arin considered.
"Apparently."
Elara almost smiled.
Arin did not.
"Where is it?"
"Below the ancestral hall."
"Can Vaelor activate it?"
"No."
"Can Father?"
"No."
"Can Lucan?"
Elara looked toward him.
"Possibly."
Lucan’s face changed.
Arin caught that.
"Can I?"
Elara nodded.
"Yes."
There it was.
The real reason.
The Coalition wasn’t only expecting Arin to return.
They needed him to.
Arin looked toward EVE.
"How long until Ark Prime’s deadline?"
«12:11:42»
"Twelve hours."
Elara’s expression changed.
"Ark Prime?"
"Later."
"But—"
"No."
Everyone looked toward Arin.
He continued.
"You just escaped a consciousness parasite."
Serena actually smiled at that description.
"You’re not solving another ancient disaster tonight."
Elara stared.
"You really have become bossy."
Lyra nodded.
"I told you."
Arin ignored both.
"EVE, Elara stays under observation."
"Confirmed."
"A-01 stays here."
The Officer tilted its head.
"Reason?"
"If Seraphine attempts another transfer, stop it."
"Accepted."
"Guardian Zero guards the mansion."
A disappointed rumble.
"Again?"
"Yes."
Arin looked toward Lucan.
"You and I leave in thirty minutes."
Lucan smiled slowly.
"Finally."
Elara tried to sit.
"No."
Arin looked at her.
She frowned.
"That expression worked better when you were six."
"It apparently improved."
"You don’t understand Vaelor."
"Then explain him in thirty minutes."
Elara stared.
Then laughed weakly.
"Your father is going to hate what you’ve become."
Arin turned toward the door.
"Good."
---
Thirty-two minutes later, Phantom-01 left House Elysium.
Lucan did not ride with him.
That had been deliberate.
Arin took the northern forest route.
Lucan left through a different entrance wearing Hollow Crown field clothing retrieved from his personal storage.
Their objectives were separate.
Lucan would enter the Coalition camp.
Arin would enter Valerius territory.
Neither would announce themselves.
Not yet.
The Phantom-01 moved beneath the trees almost silently.
Arin wore the MK-I combat suit.
Two recon drones traveled above him.
The portable sensor node rested in his inventory.
His energy sidearm remained secured.
He had considered heavier weapons.
Rejected them.
This wasn’t an invasion.
Not yet.
The more power he revealed, the more attention House Elysium attracted.
Arin needed precision.
Not spectacle.
At least until spectacle became useful.
The System map showed the route.
Forty-eight kilometers.
Normal carriage time:
Nearly a day.
Phantom-01:
Less than two hours.
Arin increased speed.
The forest became a blur.
For the first time since his exile, he was traveling toward House Valerius.
He felt less than expected.
No fear.
No longing.
A little anger.
Mostly purpose.
Thirty thousand people.
That was why he was going.
Not Duke Aldric.
Not the family name.
Not revenge.
But revenge could wait nearby.
He didn’t mind.
---
Sir Roland reached the Valerius estate before sunset.
The main gate barely opened for him.
Barricades filled the courtyard.
Wounded hunters lay beneath temporary shelters.
Servants carried water and bandages between buildings.
Parts of the western wall were blackened.
The manor Arin had once thought untouchable looked exhausted.
Roland dismounted.
A guard rushed toward him.
"Commander!"
"Where is the Duke?"
"Council chamber."
"And Lord Theron?"
"With him."
Roland’s expression hardened.
Good.
Everyone together.
He walked inside.
The halls looked different now.
Paintings removed.
Furniture used for barricades.
Windows reinforced with timber.
Servants who once whispered about the classless heir now carried weapons.
Roland reached the council chamber.
Two guards opened the doors.
Duke Aldric stood at the head of the table.
Older than he had looked two weeks ago.
Theron sat to his right.
Three Guild representatives occupied the opposite side.
Several branch-family nobles filled the remaining seats.
Everyone turned toward Roland.
Aldric spoke first.
"Where is he?"
Roland walked forward.
"He refused."
The room changed.
Theron’s eyebrows rose.
One Guild representative smiled.
A branch noble whispered something.
Aldric remained motionless.
"Repeat that."
Roland remembered Arin’s exact instruction.
"The Young Master refused to return to House Valerius."
Theron leaned back.
"Then the boy still possesses some sense."
Roland looked at him.
"He is not a boy."
Something in his voice made Theron stop smiling.
Aldric’s expression did not change.
"And Lyra?"
Roland stared at him.
For one second.
Long enough.
The Duke noticed.
"What?"
"You didn’t ask for her."
Silence.
Aldric’s jaw tightened.
"That is irrelevant."
Roland almost laughed.
There.
The same mistake.
Again.
Before he could answer, one Guild representative stood.
A tall woman with gold-trimmed robes.
"If Arin Valerius refuses lawful family summons, then the Council has little reason to delay intervention."
Roland looked at her.
"Lawful?"
"House succession remains a Crown matter."
"He was exiled."
"Which may be reversed."
"By the same people who approved it?"
Her expression hardened.
Theron interrupted.
"Enough."
Roland looked toward Aldric.
"Young Master Arin also sent a message."
The Duke’s eyes sharpened.
"What?"
Roland repeated it exactly.
"He is not returning as your son."
Silence.
"Not as your heir."
Theron’s smile disappeared.
"Not as a member of House Valerius."
Roland paused.
"He will act only because thirty thousand civilians are trapped in this conflict."
One of the branch nobles laughed.
"Act?"
He looked around the room.
"The classless exile?"
Several others smiled.
Roland did not.
He remembered the impossible valley.
The defense drones.
The glimpse of technology he could not name.
The way Arin had looked wearing black armor that did not belong to their age.
The laughter died when nobody joined it.
Theron narrowed his eyes.
"You saw something."
Roland looked at him.
"Yes."
"What?"
"A mistake."
Theron frowned.
Roland’s face remained calm.
"Ours."
Before anyone could respond, a bell rang outside.
Three times.
Eastern wall.
Attack.
Everyone stood.
A guard burst through the chamber.
"Coalition forces!"
Aldric reached for his sword.
"Numbers?"
"At least four thousand!"
"Guild?"
"Royal Guild banners behind them!"
The woman in gold robes went pale.
"That wasn’t authorized."
Roland looked at her.
For the first time, he believed her.
Interesting.
Then another guard entered.
"Grandmaster Vaelor requests entry under Crown authority!"
Aldric’s expression became murderous.
Theron smiled faintly.
Too faintly.
Roland saw it.
So did Aldric.
The Duke turned toward his brother.
"What have you done?"
Theron’s smile vanished.
"I don’t know what you mean."
Outside, something exploded against the wall.
The manor shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Then a voice amplified by magic rolled across the estate.
"By authority of the Royal Hunter Guild, House Valerius is ordered to surrender all forbidden artifacts and submit to investigation."
Roland’s hand moved toward his sword.
Grandmaster Vaelor.
The trap had closed.
---
Two kilometers away, a black motorcycle stopped atop a wooded hill.
Arin looked down at his former home.
Thousands of soldiers surrounded it.
Guild banners.
Coalition standards.
Siege equipment.
Hunters.
Mana signatures everywhere.
His recon drones fed information into his visor.
Then one marker appeared.
«HIGH-PRIORITY TARGET IDENTIFIED.
GRANDMASTER VAELOR.
ESTIMATED HUNTER CLASS:
S-RANK EQUIVALENT.»
Arin studied the camp.
No panic.
No anger.
A problem.
Problems had structures.
Structures had weaknesses.
He zoomed in.
Supply lines.
Command tents.
Mana relay towers.
Medical stations.
Siege engines.
Then—
Three prisoners near the eastern command post.
Valerius servants.
One was a boy Arin recognized.
Thomas.
A stable hand.
Fourteen years old.
Arin had taught him to cheat at cards two years ago.
A Coalition hunter struck the boy across the face.
Arin’s expression changed.
Slightly.
The System registered his pulse increasing.
He turned off the warning.
"Recon One."
The drone responded.
«LISTENING.»
"Mark every prisoner."
«CONFIRMED.»
"Recon Two."
«LISTENING.»
"Find the weakest point in their communications."
The map updated.
A mana relay tower near the northern camp.
Protected by twelve hunters.
Arin smiled.
There it was.
He had promised himself he would not reveal too much.
That remained true.
But there was a difference between revealing power...
...and teaching someone that they had miscalculated.
Arin touched the Phantom-01’s controls.
The engine went silent.
He stepped off.
Activated optical concealment on the MK-I suit.
His body faded against the trees.
A message appeared from Lucan.
«INSIDE CAMP.
VAELOR EXPECTS YOU TO ENTER THROUGH THE MAIN ESTATE.
THEY HAVE A CAPTURE TEAM PREPARED.»
Arin typed one response.
«GOOD.»
Lucan replied almost immediately.
«THAT RESPONSE WORRIES ME.»
Arin closed the message.
He looked toward the northern relay.
Then toward the prisoners.
Then the siege camp.
"Let’s start small."
Twenty minutes later, every Coalition communication crystal in the valley went dead simultaneously.
Ten minutes after that, the three prisoners disappeared from a guarded tent without anyone seeing who took them.
Five minutes later, the northern supply depot caught fire.
Not exploded.
Burned.
Slowly.
Enough to force hundreds of soldiers away from the eastern wall.
Grandmaster Vaelor stood outside his command tent staring at chaos spreading through his perfectly organized camp.
"What is happening?"
Nobody had an answer.
Then every dead communication crystal activated at once.
Blue light replaced mana.
An unfamiliar voice came through.
Calm.
Young.
"Grandmaster Vaelor."
The entire command camp froze.
Arin stood unseen on a ridge overlooking them.
Vaelor’s expression changed.
"Arin Valerius."
Arin smiled faintly.
"No."
A pause.
"That name belongs to the house you are attacking."
His voice traveled through every communication device in the camp.
"You may call me Arin Elysium."
Inside the Valerius estate, Duke Aldric heard it.
Theron heard it.
Roland heard it.
Every noble heard it.
Outside, thousands of Coalition soldiers stopped moving.
Arin continued.
"You came here expecting a classless exile."
His recon drones locked onto the siege engines.
"That was your first mistake."
Three energy shots crossed the darkness.
Three siege engines collapsed.
Not exploded.
Their main support joints simply disappeared.
Men scattered.
Vaelor’s eyes widened.
Arin’s voice remained calm.
"Your second mistake was touching civilians."
The stable boy Thomas was already riding toward a safe route.
"Your third..."
Arin looked toward the Guild Master’s command tent.
"...was assuming I would enter through the front gate."
Behind Vaelor, the tent flap moved.
Lucan stepped out wearing Hollow Crown gray.
He smiled.
Then placed a knife against the Grandmaster’s throat.
Arin’s voice came through one final time.
"...was believing you were the one who set the trap."
