With a sharp bang, Ye Chenyan intercepted all three icy arrows.
Behind them, however, a spotted deer suddenly overturned its table. The scalding soup was about to come crashing down over Yu Qingtang’s head when Ziyun sprang into the air and shattered the bowl with one swipe of her paw.
Others went after the Snow-Treading Fox King.
An azure bull wreathed in violet energy stomped down before him, sending shards of rock flying in every direction.
“Old fox, it’s been a long time since we last exchanged moves.”
One of the tiny stones smacked Yu Qingtang on the head.
Since a pebble like that posed no threat to a cultivator, no one had bothered to block it for him.
The Young Dragon King stared at him in astonishment. “What is wrong with you? You don’t have something strange clinging to you, do you?”
Yu Qingtang closed his eyes. “Maybe you should all keep your distance from me. I might be Misfortune Incarnate right now.”
How long would it take to cancel out three million spirit stones’ worth of bad luck?
Was he truly destined to be poor, incapable of bearing such overwhelming wealth?
Standing guard in front of him with his spear, Ye Chenyan barked, “Cultivate!”
“Now?” Yu Qingtang’s eyes widened.
He knew the Scripture of Awaiting Good Fortune was probably his most effective way to fight the bad luck, but everyone had already started fighting. This was clearly not the time!
“Don’t worry.” Ye Chenyan held his spear horizontally before him and glanced back with a smile. “This time, not even a pebble will get through.”
Riding Flamelet, Chi Yantian rammed away a demon cultivator who had been sent rolling toward Yu Qingtang.
“Who else dares come over?” he asked excitedly. “Which side are we fighting?”
“Hold the formation.” Scholar Xiao spun the folding fan in his hand. Moving with mysterious footwork, he pushed those around him into different positions. “Brother Chi, don’t charge out!”
“Hmph! I’ll fight them to the end today!”
Canglang soared into the sky. With both claws, he seized Huayi and hurled her outward.
The tiger-demon girl descended from above and caught the enemy completely off guard.
Ziyun crouched low, growling repeatedly. One kick of her hind leg sent an ambusher flying, and she swished her tail in satisfaction.
The Young Dragon King stepped behind Yu Qingtang.
“Perfect. This king will stand here as well.”
His attendants formed a line, prepared for battle.
Yu Qingtang was so touched that he was about to say something sentimental when Ye Chenyan looked back at him.
“Close your eyes. Cultivate, and circulate the Lotus Realm at the same time.”
Another enormous rock was already flying toward Yu Qingtang’s head.
He did not dare delay any longer. He immediately closed his eyes and began cultivating.
A golden lotus throne bloomed beneath him, making him exceptionally conspicuous amid the chaotic battlefield.
Looking down from above, the azure bull narrowed his eyes.
“That is...”
“Heh.” The Snow-Treading Fox King laughed. “I’m standing right in front of you. How can you still have eyes for anyone else?”
His fox-charm art cared nothing for sex or age. A single glance left one intoxicated, as though the soul had departed the body.
The azure bull threw back his head and let out a thunderous moo. Violet energy boiled around him before he finally regained his senses.
“It doesn’t seem like you truly want to fight me either.” The Snow-Treading Fox King narrowed his eyes. “You only want to stall for time.”
“But I happened to catch sight of your backup plan earlier...”
He raised his voice.
“Four-Square Ram King, why not show yourself?”
“I’m not the only one.”
The Four-Square Ram King’s voice came from overhead.
Waves of black wind howled across the funeral feast like wailing ghosts. Looking down at them, he remarked, “Now this looks more like a funeral.”
The old azure bull retreated to his side and transformed into an ordinary-looking middle-aged man, joining the others in the air.
The Snow-Treading Fox King lifted his head and raised an eyebrow.
“Quite the lineup. Golden-Shear Crocodile King, Four-Square Ram King, Violet-Aura Bull Demon, and Azure-Maned Lion King. It has truly been many years since four kings gathered in one place.”
“Hahaha!” The Azure-Maned Lion King laughed uproariously. “Who told that old ape to die so soon? Now every monkey on this mountain will end up in Grandpa Lion’s belly!”
“Stop pretending, old fox.”
The Golden-Shear Crocodile King was a petite young woman, but her expression was haughty.
“If you intended to meddle, there’s no way you would have come alone. What helpers did you find? Why not have them show themselves?”
The Snow-Treading Fox King grinned and called into the sky, “Old Peacock, they’re asking for you.”
“Bah!”
A peacock feather shot through the air.
A young man in a magnificent robe of peacock plumage descended gracefully from above. His face was noble and flamboyantly beautiful, impossible to forget after a single glance.
“You’re hardly any better, you shameless old fox!”
“Ah...”
A golden python crawled out from beneath one of the tables. She sounded reluctant, speaking in a slow female voice.
“I told you I haven’t felt like leaving home lately. And now look—there are still only three of us against four.”
“Don’t worry.” The Snow-Treading Fox King smiled and pointed around them. “We can make up the difference with numbers.”
“They may not be Demon Kings, but Madam Xueyao of the Lunar Jade Rabbit clan, Little Whirlwind of the Kui-Wood Wolves, and Nobody-Likes-Me the black-backed wolfdog are all top experts beneath the Demon King level.”
“We were also supposed to have the Mountain-Blasting Ape.” He spread his hands. “But I have no idea how they persuaded that centipede to hold him back.”
“Why don’t we forget about it?” the golden python drawled. “We all live on Great Wilderness Mountain. Trying to wipe out an entire clan at every opportunity is far too savage.”
“What’s wrong with a Demon King being savage?”
The Golden-Shear Crocodile King bared a mouthful of sharp teeth and transformed into a crocodile, lunging straight at her.
“This lady intends to be even more savage! I’ll tear into raw flesh and eat every one of these monkeys alive!”
The golden python sighed. “Here we go again.”
“I heard you still haven’t learned how to use chopsticks.”
“Bullshit!” The Golden-Shear Crocodile King flew into a rage. “I simply don’t want to use them!”
She charged at the golden python with overwhelming momentum.
The drowsy golden python flickered out of sight and wrapped herself tightly around the crocodile’s body.
She yawned.
“I’ve restrained one. I’m going to rest now.”
Her serpentine head drooped onto the Golden-Shear Crocodile King, and she could not be bothered to move again.
“You filthy long worm—”
The Golden-Shear Crocodile King opened her mouth to curse, but the golden python shifted her tail and firmly bound her jaws shut as well.
She breathed a sigh of relief.
“Peace and quiet.”
The others also found their respective opponents.
The Snow-Treading Fox King held off the Violet-Aura Bull Demon, while the Peacock Demon King blocked the Azure-Maned Lion King.
The Four-Square Ram King’s gaze flickered. In a flash, he bypassed them and sped deeper into the mountain.
Locked in combat with the metallic centipede, the Mountain-Blasting Ape shouted a warning.
“He’s going to steal the king’s body!”
The Four-Square Ram King brought down one hoof.
The building collapsed, scattering stone everywhere and exposing an enormous ape within, its body as large as a small mountain.
...
While the battle raged outside, Yu Qingtang sat cross-legged amid the storm of attacks, searching alone for the peace necessary to cultivate.
Truthfully, he had never cultivated so diligently in his life.
Perhaps pressure truly did create motivation. The Scripture of Awaiting Good Fortune circulated with exceptional smoothness today, cycle after cycle.
Within his mind sea, the tiny Nascent Soul lay crookedly atop the lotus throne with its legs crossed, sleeping while brazenly slacking off.
Yu Qingtang could not bear to see himself cultivating so arduously while it remained so comfortable.
He tried to stir up waves within the mind sea and splash water all over its face.
The mind sea rocked back and forth.
The Nascent Soul merely drifted with the current, carefree and relaxed.
It seemed to sleep even more comfortably now, as though lying in a rocking cradle.
Yu Qingtang gave up in silence.
He was about to focus seriously on cultivating when the little figure suddenly yawned and sat up. Riding the lotus throne, it slowly floated out of the mind sea.
Yu Qingtang: “!”
It wasn’t going to visit someone again, was it?
He instinctively tried to follow.
At the movement of his thoughts, his consciousness merged with the little figure.
Although his eyes were clearly closed, he seemed to see the outside world through his Nascent Soul’s vision.
At first, everything was somewhat blurry.
As the Nascent Soul gradually became more solid, his view grew clearer. It also looked somewhat different from what he normally saw—everyone was surrounded by a faint, hazy outline.
Without anyone teaching him, Yu Qingtang instinctively understood.
These seemed to represent everyone’s recent fortune. The redder the outline, the better their luck; the darker it was, the worse their luck.
Needless to say, he was the blackest person present.
So an ominous shadow over someone’s brow really was visible...
Yu Qingtang could not help sighing emotionally.
Curious, he turned to examine the others.
Brother Chi’s fortune was exceptionally strong today, and Scholar Xiao’s group also looked good.
Ye Chenyan, however, surprised him.
Yu Qingtang had assumed a Long Aotian would inevitably blaze scarlet with overwhelming fortune, leaving everyone else far behind.
Instead, the glow around Ye Chenyan was merely an ordinary pearly white.
Perhaps Yu Qingtang’s current lump-of-charcoal self had temporarily affected him.
Yu Qingtang guided his Nascent Soul’s gaze elsewhere.
Most of the Demon Kings were surrounded by reddish light. It seemed that anyone capable of reaching their level possessed at least some fortune.
The golden python appeared to sense something and suddenly raised her head to look in his direction.
Yu Qingtang did not dare scrutinize such powerful figures any longer. He only swept his gaze past her once.
Yet that one glance revealed something strange.
Why did the Mountain-Shaking Ape King’s corpse lying inside the mourning hall still have a white outline around it?
While Yu Qingtang was puzzling over this, Ye Chenyan suddenly looked back.
“You broke through?”
Yu Qingtang froze.
The instant he understood, his consciousness returned to his body and his Nascent Soul fully solidified.
The aura around him trembled.
His pitch-black misfortune vanished completely, returning to the normal pearly white.
He instantly felt refreshed from head to toe, as though he had heard a crisp electronic chime announcing that a counter had reset to zero.
So breaking through had this benefit too!
Yu Qingtang opened his eyes and motioned for his companions to come closer.
Lowering his voice, he said, “I just saw the Mountain-Shaking Ape King... m-m-move!”
His eyes widened in shock.
Fortunately, the idea of an ape ghost did not sound particularly frightening. Otherwise, he might have lost his composure.
Everyone turned in unison.
The Four-Square Ram King, who had approached to seize the corpse, was suddenly caught by his sole remaining horn in an enormous hand.
The Mountain-Shaking Ape King, who should have died long ago, slowly sat up.
Gripping the Four-Square Ram King by his lone horn, he swung him through the air.
The pitiful Demon King truly resembled nothing more than a helpless little lamb in his grasp.
He was slammed violently into the ground and let out a miserable cry.
“He isn’t dead!” the Azure-Maned Lion King roared.
Then, to everyone’s surprise, he immediately turned and fled.
“Since you came, don’t think you can leave!”
The Mountain-Shaking Ape King’s voice boomed like thunder.
His muscular arm swept outward, and his five fingers descended like a curtain blotting out the sky.
One palm sent the Azure-Maned Lion King flying dozens of meters.
Blood sprayed wildly from the lion’s mouth, but he did not pause for even an instant as he continued fleeing.
The Violet-Aura Bull Demon retreated warily and raised his voice.
“Mountain-Shaking Ape King, there is no grudge between us! I merely—”
“Get back here!”
The Mountain-Shaking Ape King’s roar knocked many of the weaker minor demons unconscious.
“You’ve already fought your way to my mountain gate. Why pretend to be polite? You can stay too!”
He threw a punch.
A section of the azure bull’s muscular body instantly caved inward.
The Golden-Shear Crocodile King thrashed frantically in an attempt to escape, but the Mountain-Shaking Ape King seized her by the tail and hurled her into the neighboring mountain.
The golden python gazed into the distance and exclaimed, “Oh my.”
“Who else dares come?”
The Mountain-Shaking Ape King’s roar shook the entirety of Great Wilderness Mountain.
No one dared answer.
“The Mountain-Shaking Ape King’s death was a trap?” Scholar Xiao’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Hiss—where is my brush?”
He frantically searched through his storage ring.
“What an unexpected windfall!”
The Mountain-Shaking Ape King seized the gravely wounded Four-Square Ram King. Ignoring his desperate struggles, he ended his life.
With the leading Demon Kings either dead or fleeing, the others escaped even faster.
The Snow-Treading Fox King withdrew and landed beside Yu Qingtang’s group.
Although they had won and the trap had succeeded perfectly, there was little joy on his face.
He merely gazed at the Mountain-Shaking Ape King and sighed.
“Ah.”
“He is still going to die. It is only a matter of a few days sooner or later.”
The Mountain-Shaking Ape King dropped heavily onto the ground.
“These few days allowed me to eliminate several scourges. Even after I die, Great Wilderness Mountain will remain peaceful for a hundred years.”
“That is enough.”
“Mountain-Blasting Ape, deliver the rewards we promised our guests and escort everyone else down the mountain.”
“As for the time I have left, I want to reminisce with a few old friends.”
“I’m old now. I don’t like watching scenes like this.” The golden python coiled herself into a ball. “And yet you insisted I be here.”
“Let these children stay.” The Snow-Treading Fox King pointed at Ye Chenyan’s group. “They can liven up the atmosphere.”
The Mountain-Shaking Ape King did not object.
The Peacock Demon King seemed unable to tolerate the mood any longer. His brows rose sharply.
“How did you end up like this?”
“When I saw you several decades ago, you were still full of vigor...”
With his back to the sun, a faint light flickered in the Mountain-Shaking Ape King’s eyes.
“I tried to take that step.”
“You tried to break through to Mahayana?” The Peacock Demon King stared at him in shock. “You—”
“Above Integration lies Mahayana, one step away from the gates of immortality. Countless extraordinary geniuses have fallen at this threshold.”
“You were still in the prime of your life. Your lifespan was nowhere near its end. Why would you take such a risk?”
