Guiying practically floated across the driveway, the gold bar cradled carefully against his chest, a grin he couldn’t quite suppress tugging at his mouth.

"You’re happy." Liuxian’s voice carried unmistakable warmth, watching him with the kind of open fondness he rarely let show so plainly.

"I actually impressed her," Guiying’s eyes shone under the porch light. "Your mother, of all people. I wasn’t sure what to expect walking in tonight, and she gave me a gift."

"My love," Liuxian reached for his free hand, lacing their fingers together as they walked. "You’re so happy right now, I never want to stop seeing you smile like this."

Overhead, the sky stretched wide and clear, stars scattered thick enough to rival the city lights they’d left behind on the drive over. Guiying tilted his head back briefly, breathing in the cool night air, letting the last of tonight’s nerves finally drain out of his shoulders.

"You’re shining brighter than the moon tonight," Liuxian studied him openly, something reverent in his gaze. "How radiant...I think you’ve unlocked some kind of youthful glow. Even your pheromones have shifted, more pleasant somehow. You smell like strawberries now, sweeter than before. You’ve gotten so strong, my love. I can feel it."

Guiying’s smile deepened, squeezing his hand tighter as they continued toward the car.

"Now that I’m so strong," He glanced up at him, something playful threading through his tone. "Will you stop protecting me so fiercely?"

"Never." Liuxian’s answer came immediately, "I’ll lay down my life for you. Give you my wealth, my heart, everything I have to give. That’s how much I love you. No matter how strong you become, I want to remain the shield standing between you and anything that could hurt you. I want you to never have to feel pain again, not if I can help it."

Liuxian opened the car door for him, waiting until Guiying settled into the seat before rounding the vehicle and climbing in beside him.

Guiying turned the gold bar over slowly in his hands, watching how it caught the ambient glow of the streetlights filtering through the windshield.

"Pain is good, actually." His voice softened, thoughtful now. "I’m not afraid of it anymore. I’ve come to understand it’s simply part of living. One way or another, we all experience it eventually. So I’ve decided to embrace both sides of it, the good and the bad, the same way I’ve come to love you despite every imperfection you carry."

Liuxian went still beside him, listening intently.

"Your good side outshines everything else." Guiying met his eyes directly, something unguarded and certain in his expression. "You love me so brazenly, so completely, that no one could ever change my mind about you. Not your mother’s teasing, not your father’s jokes, not anything the world throws at us."

Something shifted behind Liuxian’s eyes, warmth deepening into something hungrier, more possessive.

"Then I’m going to love you even more tonight." His voice dropped low, rough at the edges. "When our bodies meet, you’ll feel exactly how much, in every single place I touch you."

Guiying’s breath caught slightly, heat rising fast beneath his skin at the promise sitting behind those words.

"Is that so?" He managed to keep his tone light, though his pulse had already picked up its pace.

"That’s so." Liuxian reached over, brushing a strand of hair back from his face, lingering there a moment longer than necessary. "I don’t think words alone can carry everything I’m feeling right now. I’d rather show you properly, take my time doing it."

"You say that like it’s a threat." Guiying huffed out a small laugh, though his cheeks had gone warm.

"It’s a promise." Liuxian’s thumb traced along his jaw, slow and deliberate. "One I intend to keep the moment we get home."

Guiying leaned into the touch, the gold bar still resting carefully in his lap, warmth spreading through his chest that had nothing to do with the evening’s success and everything to do with the man sitting beside him.

"Drive faster, then." He murmured it, only half joking.

Liuxian laughed, low and genuine, starting the engine at last. "Patience, my love. We’ll be home soon enough."

The car pulled away from the estate, gravel crunching softly beneath the tires, stars trailing overhead as the city lights slowly swallowed them whole. Guiying rested his head against the window, watching Liuxian’s profile in the dim light, a quiet, contented smile settling over his face.

Tonight had gone better than he could have imagined. His mother-in-law liked him. His father-in-law had welcomed him without hesitation. Even Moying and Tiantian had folded him into the family with an ease that still caught him off guard, considering everything Guiying had once assumed about wealthy families closing ranks against outsiders.

And now, beside him, sat a man who looked at him like he’d personally hung every star currently scattered across the sky above them.

"What are you thinking about?" Liuxian glanced over at a red light, catching the softness in his expression.

"Just how lucky I got." Guiying reached over, resting his hand against Liuxian’s thigh. "Everything that’s happened lately, and somehow I ended up here. With you. With a family that actually wants me."

Liuxian’s hand covered his own, squeezing gently as the light turned green.

"You didn’t get lucky." His voice softened. "You built this. Every relationship in that house tonight, you earned through exactly who you are. Luck doesn’t explain any of it."

Guiying said nothing for a moment, simply letting the words settle, warmth blooming steadily in his chest the rest of the drive home.

By the time the gates of their own home came into view, something had settled fully in Guiying’s chest, a certainty he hadn’t quite let himself feel until tonight.

Whatever waited for them tomorrow, whatever cases still needed fighting or families still needed reconciling, tonight had given him proof enough that he’d built something worth protecting.
