Chapter 123: Chapter 121: I Can
Feng Ling frowned. "Foxes?"
"Yes, two Fox Demons wearing clothes. They went up the mountain!" Huangfu Miaomiao said curiously. "The trees are already burned, so why are they still going up the mountain? Isn’t it a wasted trip? It takes several hours to get from Fox Village to the summit."
Feng Ling thought for a moment, then closed her eyes and used "Mother’s Thoughts" to trace a path to the summit—
The scenery on the summit was completely different.
The ground was littered with charred branches and debris from the fire. Spiders crawled nearby, spitting out layer after layer of silk webs that intertwined with the ashes.
The once lush, towering trees were now bare.
All the smaller boughs had been burned away, leaving only the thicker branches and trunks to maintain the trees’ shapes.
Without the dense foliage to conceal it, the Ancient Tower on the summit was extremely conspicuous.
The two Fox Demons circled the summit, wanting to go up but seemingly wary of something. After hesitating for a long time, they finally took a tentative step into the ring of spiderwebs.
The spiders pounced to attack the Fox Demons, but the demons nimbly dodged them.
While dodging, the Fox Demons sniffed around and, in unison, fixed their gazes on the Ancient Tower. They had probably smelled the fruity fragrance wafting from inside.
In truth, the fruit hadn’t formed yet. Feng Ling could see it clearly—on a bulging section of root inside the Ancient Tower, some buds had sprouted, unfurling large green leaves. In a few places among the leaves, small bumps were emerging, which must be developing flower buds.
At this rate, new fruit would form tonight, and it would be ripe by tomorrow.
This strengthened Feng Ling’s resolve to launch a second attack on the Leopard Woman today, giving her no chance to recover.
Just then, the Fox Demons had snuck up to the Ancient Tower’s main gate. The Leopard Woman inside suddenly lunged out, and with a tiger’s roar, sent the Fox Demons scrambling away in terror!
The Leopard Woman gave chase relentlessly!
The two Fox Demons sprinted wildly down the mountain path!
The Leopard Woman was large and fast, but the Fox Demons were agile and adept at squeezing into tight corners. Despite chasing them for several hundred meters down the mountain path, she failed to catch either one.
Feng Ling followed the marked mist, tracking them. She watched them run past the corridor of the Three Pure Ones Palace and continue downward.
An idea sparked in her mind. This was a perfect opportunity.
"Before, we didn’t have time to burn the roots completely because the Boss was halfway up the mountain. If we can lure the Boss somewhere farther away—say, to the foot of the mountain—then even if she senses someone burning the tree, she won’t be able to get back in time."
Feng Ling continued, musing aloud, "...I can go down the mountain and keep her busy while you burn the tree. Once the tree is completely dead, she’ll lose her support. Then, we can just wear her down until she’s dead."
They had already stockpiled a large number of fruits, which could heal any injury no matter how severe. The Maze Boss, however, had no fruit. Her wounds would only get worse, and her stamina would eventually run out.
The more Feng Ling thought about it, the more reliable the plan seemed, and she grew excited.
But Pei Xianjue neither nodded nor shook her head. She just looked at Feng Ling, her face a mask of conflict.
"Hey, you’re not thinking of backing out now, are you?" The smile vanished from Feng Ling’s face.
"No..." Pei Xianjue argued, "I’m worried about you. Look... if she catches you, what if you can’t beat her? You were so badly injured yesterday. This time you have to lure her to the foot of the mountain, which will make it even farther and harder to get back to the safe house for healing."
Feng Ling frowned. "I’ll bring the fruits. I don’t have to go back to the safe house to heal."
"What if The Queen Mother of the West steals the fruits?" Pei Xianjue was still worried. "She can’t find out about the fruits, or there’ll be no point in me burning the tree."
Feng Ling glanced around and pointed at Huangfu Miaomiao. "Put them in your compartments."
Huangfu Miaomiao’s face instantly lit up. She deftly picked up a few fruits from the main hall and stored them away.
Pei Xianjue still looked anxious and unsettled. She glanced at Huangfu Miaomiao, then at Baozi, and finally at Feng Ling.
Feng Ling was exasperated. "What’s the problem now?"
Pei Xianjue said, her voice lacking confidence, "Miao Miao is carrying the fruits for you, and Baozi is helping you resist the Spiritual Suppression. So... I’m supposed to go burn the tree all by myself?"
"Deputy Pei!" Feng Ling’s voice suddenly rose. "Pei Xianjue, Deputy Captain Pei! Tell me! Can’t the world-class, renowned Hunter, the one and only Flame Queen, the brave and fearless warrior, the idol of all girls, go burn a tree by herself?!"
Pei Xianjue’s face flushed then paled. She inhaled and exhaled, exhaled and inhaled, and finally forced out a single word: "...Yes!"
Feng Ling waved to Huangfu Miaomiao and Bao Changzhi. "Let’s go~"
Huangfu Miaomiao skipped away happily.
Baozi gave Pei Xianjue an encouraging look and also left.
The figures of the three soon disappeared at the end of the corridor.
Vast white mist shrouded everything, with distant peaks barely visible.
The faint roars of beasts echoed from the mountain forest, seeming to herald the unknown dangers that filled the area.
Only Pei Xianjue and Li Qing remained in the great hall.
Pei Xianjue looked at Li Qing awkwardly. "Daoist, could you possibly..."
Li Qing immediately said, "I can perform a divination for you."
Pei Xianjue: "..."
’That won’t be necessary.’
She bolstered her courage, trying not to recall the terror of being intimidated by The Queen Mother of the West, and steeled herself to step out of the safe house.
...
...
「Meanwhile」
Feng Ling, Huangfu Miaomiao, and Baozi hurried toward the Leopard Woman’s location.
"I see them. The Fox Demons are fleeing toward Fox Village, and The Queen Mother of the West has already chased them halfway down the mountain," Feng Ling said rapidly. "At this distance, we just need to delay her for a little while longer, and there should be enough time to burn the tree."
"What if The Queen Mother of the West loses the Fox Demons and gives up the chase?" Huangfu Miaomiao asked.
Feng Ling picked up the gun she had borrowed from Pei Xianjue and said while running, "If she doesn’t chase the Fox Demons, she’ll have to chase me. I’ll shoot at her."
’I’ve never specifically practiced shooting, though, so my aim isn’t great. A few wild shots should be enough to get the Maze Boss’s attention, right?’
Baozi, following behind the two of them, voiced a concern. "There are distance requirements when I release my spiritual power. If I’m too far from The Queen Mother of the West, I might not be able to help in time."
Feng Ling knew this from experience. Yesterday, whether it was suppressing the intimidation or stirring up anger, Baozi had been a step too slow.
But she knew Baozi had done his best, so she didn’t criticize him.
Feng Ling looked back at him. "Baozi, the main reason I brought you is because I need you to ’collect my corpse’."
"Collect your corpse?!" Baozi stumbled, nearly falling over.
"This Maze Boss is very strong. To be honest, I’m not confident I can kill her in one go," Feng Ling said seriously. "But even if I can’t, I’m still going to try. As long as I’m not dead, I can keep fighting her, ten times, twenty times. I’ll wear her down if I have to! The premise of this plan is—after I’m seriously wounded by her, I need someone to watch over my body. If it’s just left exposed in the wild, the little Monsters in the mountains might eat me clean before I’ve even had a chance to heal."
