Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 137 - 135: Continuing the MeetingChapter 137: Chapter 135: Continuing the Meeting
"Is this Feng Ling?" The General lowered his head to flip through the meeting documents, which contained a list of all attendees.
He found Feng Ling’s name. Beside it was a personal file prepared by a subordinate ahead of time—it contained profiles for not just Feng Ling, but Liang Zhou and Baozi as well.
"Your record is quite impressive. Killed one Alien Species in Tianshui Park, three in the West Suburban Villa District... another near Qingjiang Bridge... then you participated in the cleanup operation at the Mengjia Hotel, and now you’ve conquered a Maze with Deputy Pei."
After scanning Feng Ling’s file, the General couldn’t help but chuckle. He looked up at her and said, "What’s the story here? I’ve never seen a single person run into Alien Species so frequently."
"Um, it seems to be because..." Feng Ling paused, feeling as if Pei Xianjue’s awkwardness was contagious.
She cleared her throat twice, trying her best to appear natural, and replied, "Because the Alien Species’ game system designated me as a hidden Boss. Other Alien Species want to kill me to earn a huge amount of points. And then... well, just as my record says, I killed them instead."
People in the conference room put their heads together and began to whisper amongst themselves.
Su Yuqing had previously submitted a report about the "hidden Boss" situation. In this room, no one was aware of it except for the people from the Supervision Bureau.
A young official blurted out, "Aren’t you afraid?"
Feng Ling smiled and said, "I’ve always been brave. My perception of fear seems to be a little different from the average person’s."
"A form of autism? Or fear-blindness?" Pei Xianjue asked. "Have you completely lost the ability to feel fear?"
Feng Ling shook her head. "It’s not a loss of the ability. How should I put this... To be precise, it’s more like when I sense fear, it transforms into another emotion, like excitement."
"A natural-born warrior," the General concluded with a smile, looking toward a few people in dark uniforms on the other side of the conference table. "Failing to recruit someone like her into the Inspection Bureau is a dereliction of your duty."
Pei Xianjue whispered to Feng Ling, "Those three are from the Supervision Bureau. The General is calling them out~"
Feng Ling whispered back, "Who ranks higher, the military or the Supervision Bureau?"
"The military, of course," Pei Xianjue said, pursing her lips and lowering her voice to a near-inaudible whisper. "But in the future... that’s hard to say."
"Ahem..." Baozi shot the two of them a meaningful look and silently passed over a slip of paper.
The note read: *There might be Card Holders with superhuman hearing among the bodyguards.*
Pei Xianjue: "..."
Feng Ling: "..."
’Alright, no more idle chatter.’
Everyone in this conference room was a big shot; each had several bodyguards standing behind them.
"Let’s talk about this python..." The General closed the file and looked at Feng Ling and Pei Xianjue. "I’m very curious. Do these giant creatures have any weaknesses? How are we supposed to deal with them?"
Feng Ling thought for a moment before saying, "I believe it’s a failed product of genetic evolution."
"A failed product? How so?" the General asked.
"Because it’s too big," Feng Ling said thoughtfully. "It’s a creature that has pushed its gigantism genes to the absolute limit. A terrestrial environment can’t support a creature that massive; its skeleton isn’t strong enough, and its own weight would crush it. That’s why it can only live in water, like a whale in the ocean. But the ocean has plenty of food. That lake had nothing, likely because the python ate it all. The larger the body, the more food it must consume. Without food, it would starve to death. So, the Maze System started tossing feed into the lake for it—a special kind of fruit rich with energy. You all should have seen it in the video, right? All the injuries we sustained in the Maze were completely healed by eating that fruit."
The General nodded slightly. "I see. What you’re saying is... the creature’s physical makeup is inherently flawed. It’s a genetic failure."
"Yes," Feng Ling nodded. "I saw that python up close. It had gill-like structures on both sides of its head and neck, and it lacked the sharp fangs a snake ought to have. My guess is its teeth atrophied from long-term consumption of fruit."
She then continued, "In fact, the Fox Demons and even the Oxhead and Horseface all have their own flaws. The Horse-faced Monster’s is the most obvious. Because of its long horse face, it has to lean forward while walking to get a better field of vision. This makes its center of gravity very unstable. As for the Minotaur, because of its exaggerated horns, its upper body is overdeveloped while its lower limbs are disproportionately short, preventing it from running, jumping, or moving with any agility."
Feng Ling smiled as she said this, recalling the exhilarating feeling of killing them.
"The entire Maze, aside from the Maze Master, is filled with failed and inferior products of genetic evolution. They all have weaknesses of some kind and are nothing to be afraid of. Only the Maze Master is special... perfect..." The image of the Leopard Woman surfaced in Feng Ling’s mind. "The Queen Mother of the West... she was perfect."
Back then, she had been enraged by its killing intent, and all she could think about was how to kill it.
But in a different state of mind, she imagined she would want to appreciate that half-human, half-beast creature again, to watch it leap through the misty mountain forest until it reached the summit.
’That must have been a beautiful sight...’
Pei Xianjue watched Feng Ling from the side, complaining silently in her head: ’You really aren’t afraid of anything, are you? You’re actually starting to reminisce and enjoy it.’
"A very valuable insight." The General looked at the others at the table. "Everyone, what are your thoughts?"
Everyone was cautious; no one was quick to speak.
Shen Mu spoke up. "I’m sure everyone has a decent grasp of the situation inside the Sanqing Mountain Maze by now. Why don’t we all share our opinions? We’re sitting here comfortably, having a meeting and drinking tea, while at this very moment, our best Inspectors and our most valuable research team are trapped in the Daling Forest Maze. And while we may not be able to go to the front lines to rescue them, we must do everything in our power to support them from the home front."
After he finished, the tension in the room eased slightly, and people began to speak up.
"I believe... we should dispatch a team of scholars to research the myths, legends, and cultural history of the Daling Forest region. The genetic mutation path of the Maze Creatures is deeply intertwined with local folklore; this cannot be overlooked."
"Evacuate the local residents and construct high-security fences in the vicinity. The military needs to dispatch troops for 24-hour patrols. We cannot let a single Pollution Body enter the city and cause secondary contamination."
"...The work on the fences and walls is already in progress, it just takes time. Furthermore, the safety of the workers must be guaranteed. The military has been conducting patrols and surveillance this whole time."
"I still think we need to continue deploying drones. Even if we lose contact with them due to spatial distortions, if our people manage to find even one, the food and weapons on board will increase the team’s chances of survival."
More and more people began to chime in.
Feng Ling figured her part in this was over. She picked up the cup in front of her and took a sip of tea.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Su Yuqing, sitting diagonally across from her, wearing an absentminded expression.
’Strange...’
