Chapter 37: Chapter 35: Fang Ye

—The boss "ate" nine Cards!

—The boss ate so many Cards its Pollution Value went off the charts!

—After its Pollution Value went off the charts, the boss ate *another* Card! And for some bizarre reason, it turned that Card into a bracelet, then became weak and looked half-dead!

Even Huangfu Miaomiao, a player, couldn’t figure out what was going on!

If it weren’t so inconvenient with Su Yuqing right there, Huangfu Miaomiao would be dying to open the forums and ask the greater player community about it!

As she was reeling in confusion, Su Yuqing’s phone rang.

The call connected—

"Captain Su, the Cleaner Fish have arrived. Should we send them in now?"

The Cleaner Fish were a professionally trained squad within the Inspection Bureau, specializing in handling the aftermath.

"Has Card recovery been completed?" Su Yuqing asked.

"Completed. A total of six Cards have been recovered," the voice on the other end replied.

Su Yuqing raised an eyebrow, quite surprised. He hadn’t expected to collect so many Cards; a typical Pollution Body only dropped one to three.

"Was there a Squirrel Card?" Su Yuqing asked.

The Squirrel Card’s ability was hoarding; it allowed the user to store Cards in their body without digesting them. Consequently, bearers of the Squirrel Card often acted as merchants among Alien Species, a fact noted in the Inspection Bureau’s files.

"It’s unclear at the moment. We’ll have to wait for the analysis report."

Su Yuqing nodded slightly. "Understood. Submit the report to headquarters once it’s ready."

"Captain Su, what should we do with the witness, Fang Ye?"

"If he isn’t injured, send him for a comprehensive physical, then schedule an appointment for him with a psychologist," Su Yuqing said calmly. "I’ll speak with him when I get back."

"Understood."

Su Yuqing hung up, lost in thought for a moment, then looked at Huangfu Miaomiao.

Huangfu Miaomiao instantly tensed up.

’Without Feng Ling as a shield, facing someone from the Inspection Bureau all by myself is so much pressure!’

Fortunately, Su Yuqing didn’t make things difficult for her. "This evacuation was a large-scale operation," he said. "A lot of reporters have shown up, and there’s a big crowd of onlookers. It’s possible some of your kind are mixed in, trying to gather information. It’s best if you and Feng Ling stay in the car. I’ll have a trusted driver take you back to Qingjiang City."

A wave of warmth washed over Huangfu Miaomiao, and her skeletal eyes filled with gratitude.

’What a good person!’

Su Yuqing looked at the soundly sleeping Feng Ling and added, "When she wakes up, tell her I’ll have someone take the truck in for repairs, and I’ll help her get the deposit back."

Huangfu Miaomiao nodded repeatedly, like a chicken pecking at grain.

"You don’t seem to have any trouble communicating, so I doubt you’re being controlled by Feng Ling," Su Yuqing said evenly. "Zhou Diao said they used a recovery potion from an Alien Species in the cave. That kind of transaction is strictly forbidden, but you saved them, so I want to express my gratitude. Thank you."

Huangfu Miaomiao: "..."

Her little face flushed bright red.

Su Yuqing sighed softly. "We stand on different sides. You helped us this time, so I can keep your identity as an Alien Species under wraps. But the next time we meet... as the head of the Qingjiang Inspection Branch, I will be obligated to report you to headquarters."

Huangfu Miaomiao: "..."

The color drained from her face, going from red to pale white.

Having said what needed to be said, Su Yuqing turned, got out of the car, and closed the door.

Inside the car, Huangfu Miaomiao was in a daze, a complete and utter daze...

’Was that a warning? Was it? It was, wasn’t it?’

She couldn’t help but turn to look at Feng Ling, her heart filled with indignation and sorrow. ’And you’re just sleeping away so peacefully!’

...

...

In a small conference room, a secretary gently placed a cup of tea in front of Fang Ye before taking a seat to the side, opening a laptop, and preparing to take notes.

The conference room door opened, and Su Yuqing strode in.

"Sorry to keep you waiting. I just rushed back from Jiangkou City."

Su Yuqing sat on the sofa across from Fang Ye, his expression as refined and gentle as it had been when he first met Feng Ling.

"You must be Fang Ye. How do you feel after your physical? Nothing serious, I hope?"

Fang Ye had already completed his physical, showered, and changed into a set of clean clothes provided by the Inspection Bureau.

He waved his hands nervously. "Nothing serious. The Special Attack Team had me evacuate first. They all looked out for me, so I wasn’t injured."

"Protecting the lives and property of our citizens is our duty," Su Yuqing said with a smile. "Don’t be so nervous. We’ve just brought you in for some routine questions to get a better understanding of the situation."

Fang Ye nodded cooperatively. "Right, okay."

Su Yuqing said, "Start by telling me how you all discovered the cave. I reviewed your file on the way over. You served a year and a half for theft, were released recently, and are currently unemployed. Why were you in the mall’s underground parking garage?"

The color instantly drained from Fang Ye’s face. "Are... are you going to send me back to prison?"

Su Yuqing slowly shook his head, his polite smile unwavering. "The Inspection Bureau only handles cases related to Alien Species. Anything else is outside our jurisdiction."

Fang Ye relaxed slightly at his words.

But then he heard Su Yuqing add, "However, if there’s anything we can’t clear up, we may need assistance from other departments for the investigation... like the local police, for example. You understand, don’t you?"

Su Yuqing smiled.

"I-I understand!" Fang Ye quickly straightened his back, his hands resting uneasily on his lap. "I’ll cooperate completely!"

"Then let’s begin," Su Yuqing said.

Fang Ye nodded emphatically and told them everything he knew.

...

An hour later, Fang Ye left the conference room.

The secretary typed the final punctuation mark and asked Su Yuqing, "Are the meeting notes acceptable as is? Do they need any deletions or revisions?"

"Delete everything related to the Alien Species accompanying Feng Ling," Su Yuqing said, gazing at the sky outside. "And don’t mention a single word about Zhou Diao and Xiao Li using the recovery potion."

"Understood." The secretary modified the document as requested, his fingers flying across the keyboard.

"If Feng Ling joins the Inspection Bureau while still accompanied by an Alien Species, it’ll be impossible to keep it a secret forever," the secretary reminded him.

Hearing this, Su Yuqing couldn’t help but chuckle. He watched a bird circling in the sky and said, "She won’t be joining us."

The secretary sounded a little disappointed. "Is that so? I thought she might take Ms. Ye’s place. That would’ve taken some of the pressure off Zhou Diao."

"She can’t replace Ye Zheng." Su Yuqing turned back with a faint smile. "They’re two completely different people. One can’t replace the other."

...

...

Downstairs, Fang Ye stepped out of the Inspection Bureau building.

He turned and looked up at the towering building, his mind in a daze.

It felt as though just a moment ago, his fate had been intertwined with the many important figures inside. But as he walked out the main entrance, his destiny snapped back to its original course—

He was once again a good-for-nothing, an obscure nobody.

He had just been through such a heart-pounding ordeal, yet his life hadn’t changed one bit.

Fang Ye pulled a small packet of wet wipes from his pocket.

Feng Ling had casually tossed it to him in the cave. There was still one wipe left inside, and now it was the only proof of the entire experience.

Fang Ye looked at the packaging in his hand, an indescribable melancholy filling his heart.

’Is there any way to reconnect with those people?’
