Chapter 54: Chapter 52: What’s the Matter?

Feng Ling had always been full of curiosity about Alien Species.

Curious about why they appeared.

Curious about how they would disappear.

Curious about what abilities their Cards held, and how much pain their genetically modified bodies could endure. In this respect, she could be inhumanly cold.

But when faced with an Alien Species with missing arms, covered in blood, and curled up in a human-like body—

Feng Ling still felt a sense of unease, as if she were killing her own kind, along with the boredom of bullying the weak.

Of course, she couldn’t rule out the influence of a Card brimming with maternal love acting up.

She still hoped the Fishman would go back to being a Fishman—cursing angrily, lashing out with hatred, fighting for its life with all its might. That would all make for good entertainment.

"Don’t kill me..." the Fishman began, his voice trembling.

Feng Ling was already fully dressed. She watched the Fishman with an encouraging gaze, hoping it would continue.

"I was just hired. He’s the one who wants you dead..." The Fishman, perhaps sensing the lack of killing intent in Feng Ling’s eyes, mustered the courage to defend himself.

But Feng Ling was not satisfied with this explanation.

She asked the Fishman, "How did you know I was on the river?"

"Our employer bought your intel on the forums. For 2,000 points, they got your name, appearance, main Card ability, and your movements," the Fishman replied.

"My movements?" Feng Ling tilted her head slightly, intrigued. "Does the person selling the intel have some kind of search and track ability?"

"I’m not sure..." the Fishman said in a low voice. "I only know they conduct offline trades with players at the Mengjia Hotel. As long as you have enough points, you can buy anything. I’ve only been there once, so I’m not familiar with them. I don’t know which player has the search ability."

Feng Ling grew even more interested. "If a player wants to make a trade, who do they contact at the Mengjia Hotel?"

The Fishman clearly hesitated for two seconds, then said in an even lower voice, "Contact the front desk and request a room on the fourth floor or higher. The attendant will register the guest’s information and have them fill in their forum nickname. Then someone on the forums will send a friend request and tell them the room number for the trade..."

He glanced up at Feng Ling, then quickly lowered his head again, casting aside all dignity to beg, "Whatever else you want to know, I’ll tell you. Just don’t kill me..."

Feng Ling thought for a moment, then slowly asked, "The person who sold my intel... are they in the Mengjia Hotel right now?"

"She should... be there." After a moment of hesitation, the Fishman nodded. "Her name is Moon Shadow. She seems to be very close with the hotel owner."

Feng Ling narrowed her eyes. "I need to verify if you’re telling the truth... Go back to the Mengjia Hotel, find the people responsible for this deal, and tell them that because of their faulty intel, two of your partners are dead. Demand compensation."

"They’ll never agree to compensate me." The Fishman frowned. "The fact that they dare to trade offline means they aren’t afraid of any player causing trouble for them."

"I know," Feng Ling said with a smile. "But you have to go, and you have to go quickly."

The Bone Blade on her shoulder emerged from her wide collar, glinting coldly in the night. "Or, you can choose to die right now."

A flicker of conflict appeared in the Fishman’s eyes.

Clearly, while he feared Feng Ling, he was just as afraid of the players at the hotel.

"If I do as you say, will you let me go?" he continued to bargain.

Feng Ling smiled, her expression devoid of emotion. "I’ll give you two hours. If you haven’t reached the Mengjia Hotel in two hours, I will kill you."

The Fishman pressed his lips together, smartly choosing not to ask how Feng Ling would find him.

His lower body transformed back into a fish tail. He slammed it against the boat, using the force to leap into the air and dive into the water—

The tail flashed a dark, silver-gray light on the surface of the pitch-black river, then vanished beneath the waves.

In the distance, a helicopter circled, its searchlight casting large, bright circles of light onto the dim river surface.

Feng Ling stood alone on the small fishing boat.

The river wind had almost dried the water from her body. Her transparent form gradually returned to normal, but her long hair remained wet and heavy, stubbornly clinging to her skin. It framed her beautiful, chilling features, making her look less like a human and more like a Water Demon who had just taken form.

The helicopter’s searchlight finally landed on the blood-red fishing boat.

Seen from above, the boat stood out like a solitary blood lotus blooming on the river’s surface.

"Vice-captain! We’ve spotted an Alien Species!"

A team member shouted nervously.

Zhou Diao’s eyes widened as he cursed, "Alien Species my ass! That’s Feng Ling! Get the rope ladder down now!"

The team member scrambled to grab the rope ladder. Just as he was about to throw it down, Zhou Diao stopped him.

"Wait!"

Zhou Diao peered down uneasily, his expression conflicted.

He desperately wanted to save Feng Ling.

But the stench of fish and blood filled his nostrils. The scene below was so gruesome, he didn’t need to guess to know that Feng Ling must have had a massive fight with those Alien Species. And although she looked calm now...

Who knew if she was truly calm?

’What if she’s already gone mad? Letting her on the helicopter could get everyone killed!’

A chill ran down Zhou Diao’s spine at the thought. But could he just leave Feng Ling there?

Gritting his teeth, Zhou Diao asked the other team members in the helicopter, "Did any of you bring perfume?"

The team members were all completely dumbfounded.

’Who brings perfume on a serious mission?!’

Zhou Diao cursed irritably, "A bunch of useless good-for-nothings! Not even a single bottle of perfume!"

One team member asked timidly, "Um... would... would mosquito repellent work?"

Another team member said, stunned, "You actually carry mosquito repellent?"

"Well, there have been a lot of mosquitos on night duty recently..."

"Quick, get it out! Get it out!" Zhou Diao urged impatiently.

He snatched the mosquito repellent from the team member’s hand and, under everyone’s shocked gaze, began spraying it furiously all over himself. Then he gave the team a solemn warning, "I’m going down first. If she attacks me, you pull out immediately! Get Captain Su to send a destroyer. We absolutely cannot let her get to shore!"

Zhou Diao stuffed the mosquito repellent into his pocket, grabbed the rope ladder, and jumped out of the helicopter—

The rope ladder swayed in the air, dangling its way down to the fishing boat.

Feng Ling looked up as Zhou Diao descended from the sky and remarked, "What a big helicopter."

Seeing that she was speaking in a normal tone, Zhou Diao silently breathed a sigh of relief. "Old Su pulled back all the boats and sent the helicopter. He wouldn’t let us go into the water, afraid something would happen."

Then he saw the corpses and the Card on the boat and couldn’t help but wipe the sweat from his face. "You were right not to touch the Card. You’re already at 29%. Don’t you dare digest any more."

"There are two more dead ones in the water. I wonder if their Cards can be salvaged," Feng Ling said.

"Forget about it. You won’t be able to get them," Zhou Diao said with a grimace. "They’ll probably be absorbed by the fish in the river. If one day the news suddenly reports that a sea monster or a Fish Monster has been found in the Qingjiang, it’ll probably be because some unlucky fish absorbed a Card and mutated."

He held the rope ladder and gestured with it towards Feng Ling. "Come on, let’s get back to shore first."

Feng Ling frowned, her expression unpleasant.

"What’s wrong now!" Zhou Diao was getting impatient, but he didn’t dare rush her.

"You have a weird smell on you..." Feng Ling covered her nose and took two steps back in disgust. "You go up first. I’ll go after you’re up."
