Chapter 7: Chapter 5: Four of Them
Feng Ling leaned quietly against the hospital bed.
She had discovered that after digesting the Killing Bee, its ability had changed somewhat during practical application.
For instance, her body didn’t need to move, but her vision could follow the ribbon of mist out of the hospital room, through the hallway and the break room, and out the first-floor window onto the street outside.
She saw cars, pedestrians, and ornamental trees.
The colors of everything were muted and dim. Only the mist before her was dense and conspicuous, continuously drawing her forward.
She followed the mist into a storm drain at the street corner, traveled a long distance through the dark and damp sewers, and then returned to the surface. After a series of twists and turns, she arrived at a neighborhood of townhouses and entered one of them—
Feng Ling witnessed a bizarre scene.
In the living room on the first floor of the townhouse, a completely crimson woman was halfway emerged from a mobile pool of blood.
Her body was formed from countless Blood Worms. Her gunshot wounds were so severe that as she tried to reform, fist-sized holes kept appearing, from which fell hundreds of Blood Worms and clattering bullet slugs.
The tiny worms fell to the floor, writhing as they crawled back into the pool and merged with the viscous blood.
Throughout this process, the woman’s expression was one of extreme agony, her crimson lips opening and closing.
Although Feng Ling couldn’t hear any sound, she could guess the woman was cursing about something.
She lay in the pool of blood, worms constantly pouring from her wounds, only to be reabsorbed. After a long struggle like this, the fist-sized holes gradually shrank to the size of bottle caps, then to the size of fingernails, and finally, they were nothing more than pinpricks—
Her body’s regeneration was finally complete.
The woman climbed all the way out of the pool of blood. Her skin was smooth and rosy, without a single wound to be seen.
Feng Ling watched the entire process and couldn’t help but marvel. This Alien Species truly had what it took to storm the Inspection Bureau single-handedly.
All because of those worms.
Unless a rocket launcher blew it to smithereens, no matter how severe the wound, the Blood Worms could repair it. It was basically unkillable.
’How do you kill something like this...’
Feng Ling pondered.
The woman, completely unaware that her every move was being watched by Feng Ling, picked up a blanket from the sofa after her body was repaired, wrapped it around herself, and lay down to rest.
Feng Ling waited a moment. Seeing the woman remain motionless, she withdrew her vision.
The faint red mist was still there.
The mark was effective for twelve hours. As long as that time hadn’t passed, she could track the woman’s location again at any moment.
Footsteps sounded from outside the hospital room.
Feng Ling looked up to see a nurse walk in and hang a new bag of blood for her.
The nurse’s eyes were red, as if she had just been scolded, but she was still very professional when facing Feng Ling. "You’ve lost too much blood. After this bag, you’ll need two more."
Feng Ling asked her, "About how much will my medical expenses be?"
The nurse hesitated. "Um... I’m not really sure. We usually only treat internal personnel from the Inspection Bureau."
Thinking Feng Ling was worried about the high cost, the nurse added reassuringly, "Don’t worry. Whether you’re an Inspector or not, the Inspection Bureau will cover your medical expenses until you’ve recovered. Your treatment won’t be delayed."
Feng Ling glanced at the newly hung blood bag and asked, "How is blood plasma usually stored?"
"Huh?" the nurse replied hesitantly. "...In a dedicated blood bank refrigerator at around 4°C. Is there a problem?"
Feng Ling smiled. "No, nothing. Just curious."
The nurse was a little confused but didn’t press the issue, leaving the room in a bit of a daze.
Feng Ling closed her eyes to rest.
She could feel her body recovering quickly as her lost blood was replenished. Perhaps by tonight... no, maybe in just another two hours, she would be back to her peak condition.
"Blood plasma needs to be stored at around 4°C. It can’t be too cold, and it can’t be too hot... Those Vampire Worms are probably the same. Too cold and they’ll freeze. Too hot and... will they get cooked?"
She muttered to herself in the hospital room.
...
...
Night fell, and the bustling city returned to silence.
Feng Ling drove a rented van to a somewhat desolate neighborhood of townhouses, parked, and cut the engine.
The plan had changed.
She had originally prepared a lot of goodies: gasoline, alcohol, charcoal, flour... She’d even picked up a few old cotton quilts from a scrapyard.
The opponent’s ability was nothing more than using its worms to paralyze the target and then suck their blood.
She was immune to the paralyzing toxin, and she could interrupt the blood-sucking attack with her Bone Blade. The only problem was how to stop the woman from escaping.
Feng Ling’s plan was to seal all the townhouse’s doors and windows with fire.
But when she checked with her marking ability, she saw that besides the woman, there were now three other people in the townhouse.
’Accomplices?’
’Four of them?’
She was completely confident in killing one Alien Species, but four? The variables were too great, especially since she knew nothing about the abilities of the other three.
’...Should I just leave?’
Feng Ling sat in the van, her expression grim.
She had nearly died from the sneak attack today. Now that she’d tracked the enemy to their lair, she couldn’t even get her revenge?
With a dark expression, she got out of the van and walked through the open iron gate.
’I’m already here, after all. I should at least scout out their strength first.’
There was no guard at the gatehouse. Maybe he was slacking off, or maybe there was never a guard to begin with. Two rows of dark townhouses stood ahead. Not far off was a construction site, piled with cement, sandbags, and miscellaneous building materials.
After Qingjiang City was designated a high-risk area, many construction sites were shut down. The bosses had taken their money and fled to safer cities, leaving behind a mess of unfinished projects.
These Alien Species certainly knew how to pick a spot. The townhouse they were occupying was the only finished model home.
In the courtyard, unpruned plants grew wild, their lush branches and leaves obscuring the light from the first floor.
Feng Ling scaled the wall in the dark, circled around to the backyard, and peered through the floor-to-ceiling glass window to see the situation inside.
Besides the woman who had ambushed her, there were two men, one fat and one thin, and a little girl wearing a skull mask.
The little girl, who looked about twelve or thirteen, was curled up on the floor, covered in bruises.
The woman, wrapped in her blanket on the sofa, asked, "Did you grab the wrong person? We’ve been interrogating her for ages and gotten no clues. It’s cutting into my rest time."
"Impossible! We couldn’t have gotten the wrong one!" the fat man roared, annoyed. "She posted anonymously on a forum looking for a team to enter the Maze. We spent half a month coaxing her before she finally agreed to meet! It has to be her!"
"Then why doesn’t she know the location of the Maze’s entrance?" the woman asked.
"She knows!" the fat man continued to yell. "She’s just one of those stubborn types who won’t talk until you’ve pushed them to the brink!"
"Alright, stop shouting," the lanky man on the other side spoke up, frowning at the woman. "And what’s with you today? Where did you go during the day? How did you get so injured?"
The woman tightened the blanket around herself and said nonchalantly, "Took a trip to the Inspection Bureau. Didn’t the news today say an Alien Species was killed in Tianshui Park? The Card must have been collected by the Bureau, so I thought I’d try my luck and see if I could pick up the scraps."
"Did you get lucky?" the fat man asked, leaning closer.
