Alien Species Invasion? I Kill Them Back.
Chapter 93 - 91: Sensitive ContentChapter 93: Chapter 91: Sensitive Content
A roaring fire blazed, incinerating the three-meter-plus monster into charcoal.
Feng Ling casually picked up some dry grass and branches and tossed them into the fire.
"Can it come back to life after being burned like this?" she asked Li Qing.
Li Qing shook his head. "Genetic evolution can allow organisms to perform miracles, but it can’t create myths. Once something is dead, it’s dead. It’s impossible to come back to life."
"Then why did it come back to life last time?" Huangfu Miaomiao asked, confused.
"I don’t know. Maybe its vitals weren’t hit, or maybe it has some kind of substance in its body that allows for rapid healing," Li Qing answered honestly.
"Like a Strong Recovery Agent?" Huangfu Miaomiao asked.
Li Qing thought for a moment. "Possibly..."
Feng Ling watched the corpse in the fire for a moment, then kicked a loose stone off the path. "Let’s go," she said, turning around. "Maybe we’ll run into the Minotaur."
Pei Xianjue was filming the fire. Hearing Feng Ling, she looked up and down the mountain path. "I wonder which way that monster will appear from. If it’s from downhill... the injured Hero is definitely no match for it."
"The Minotaur should be up the mountain right now," Li Qing said.
"Why?" Feng Ling glanced back at him.
"I can’t be one hundred percent certain, it’s just a guess," Li Qing said thoughtfully. "You guys saw the Minotaur with the drone last night, didn’t you? It was the only monster on the path then, right? That suggests that, under normal circumstances, it and Horseface don’t appear together. One of them probably patrols the mountain by day, and the other by night, allowing them to stagger their rest."
Li Qing paused for a moment before continuing, "They’re monsters, not perpetual motion machines. They have to eat and rest at some point."
After hearing this, Pei Xianjue couldn’t help but ask, "Then how do you explain Hero and Baozi getting attacked by the Minotaur during the day?"
"You left around 5 AM, which is right when night transitions into day. If Oxhead and Horseface were changing shifts, it’s plausible that when you encountered Horseface, Oxhead wasn’t far off. He could have been drawn over by the sound of the fight," Li Qing replied.
"So that’s how it was..." Pei Xianjue murmured thoughtfully. "After Hero defeated Horseface, the Minotaur heard the commotion and rushed over. We just happened to be heading to the safe house at that exact moment. By the time we got back to the mountain path, the Minotaur was already gone..."
Her eyes suddenly widened. "Ah, so that means the Minotaur is probably sleeping somewhere on the mountain? In that case, shouldn’t we take this chance to..."
Pei Xianjue trailed off.
She had wanted to suggest they take the opportunity to strike the Minotaur while it slept, but then she thought of Liang Zhou, whose whereabouts were unknown.
’Should I go down the mountain to find Liang Zhou?’
’Or go up the mountain and kill the Minotaur?’
Feng Ling, walking ahead, heard her and was a little speechless. She looked back. "We’re already halfway down the mountain."
Pei Xianjue felt a sense of relief at her words, along with a hint of guilt. She gave Feng Ling a weak smile. "So, uh, we’re going downhill?"
Feng Ling kept walking as she retorted, "Deputy Captain Pei, you could at least be a little more decisive. You were the one who wanted to go down the mountain to save someone, and now you’re the one who wants to go up to find the Minotaur. What was it you were saying earlier? ...Oh, right. Seven years of history. Seven years! Longer than dating, even. And your dad, who just uses money and power to corrupt human nature, destroying a bodyguard’s purity and loyalty. You have to take responsibility and can’t let Liang Haohan be left for dead in the wilderness, right?"
Pei Xianjue’s face flushed, then darkened, and the corner of her mouth twitched. "...You have a pretty good memory."
’She remembered my exact words.’
Pei Xianjue defended herself in a low voice, "I just thought it was a rare opportunity, so I hesitated for a second. If we could kill the Minotaur, it would be revenge for Hero... Ugh, okay, I admit it. For a moment, I got a little greedy for a quick win. I’m just a normal person; everyone has their own limitations and complexities, you can understand that, right? Even though I hesitated, my desire to go downhill and save him is absolutely genuine. I’m not the kind of person who says one thing and does another..."
Feng Ling glanced back at her and remarked with genuine feeling, "Wow, you can really talk. You could talk a flower into blooming. Now I’m convinced Liang Haohan must have been bewitched by your father. Is he an even smoother talker than you?"
Pei Xianjue’s lips twitched in annoyance. "Can we just talk nicely? Do you have to keep bringing up my dad?"
Huangfu Miaomiao, walking behind them, couldn’t help but interject, "But how can we be sure there’s only one Minotaur on the mountain? This mountain is huge. Maybe there are lots of Oxheads and Horsefaces."
Li Qing slowly shook his head. "Oxhead and Horseface are unique figures. If the Maze needed more monsters on this mountain path, it would have deployed different kinds. Since it chose to use the Oxhead and Horseface theme, it probably won’t violate that established concept."
"’Uniqueness...’" The word gave Feng Ling an idea, and she thought of herself.
’You are the Origin of Life, you are the Mother of the World...’
’There can’t be a second Origin of Life, nor a second Mother of the World. These terms all hinted at the Nest’s uniqueness. Following that line of reasoning, the Mirror Salamander’s replication ability was the complete opposite of the Nest. Could that be the reason the Mirror Salamander Card gave her a Pollution Value as high as 14%?’
Just as Feng Ling was pondering this, she heard Huangfu Miaomiao complain, "Since when are Oxhead and Horseface ’common knowledge’..."
Pei Xianjue chuckled. "It’s common knowledge for us humans. Probably a bit difficult for the Alien Species, though."
Li Qing disagreed. "Every game is based on some corresponding culture. Going into a game without reading the strategy guide is just the player making it harder on themselves. It’s not a flaw in the game’s design."
Huangfu Miaomiao got very angry. "It’s easy for you to talk, you’re an administrator! After we players log in, we have to hide our identities, learn social etiquette, manage interpersonal relationships, figure out how to use cell phones and computers, and find ways to complete our missions without attracting attention! Who has the time to study the ’cultural background’ you’re talking about!"
Li Qing was taken aback for a moment. "There are only 122 Mazes in total. They were originally instances open to a small number of players. Players who haven’t consulted a guide can’t solve the riddles and therefore can’t even enter a Maze."
Huangfu Miaomiao retorted furiously, "So you’re saying I deserve it? That it’s my fault I can’t earn points because I couldn’t figure out the guide? It’s clearly your fault! You people deliberately torture us, toying with us and enjoying our misery! Is it so much fun watching us kill ourselves for a few measly points? And that disgusting logout mechanic that deducts players’ points! If it wasn’t for—"
She continued ranting, but halfway through, her voice suddenly devolved into a series of clicks and warbles.
Li Qing frowned and opened his mouth to speak, but his words also came out as a string of chaotic, garbled tones.
Pei Xianjue was completely baffled. She looked at Feng Ling in astonishment.
"It’s nothing," Feng Ling said with a shrug. "Sensitive content. The system automatically blocks it, so we can’t understand them."
Pei Xianjue looked toward the sky, feeling that the omnipresent system was terrifying.
"Aren’t you going to calm them down?" she asked Feng Ling in a hushed voice.
Feng Ling, walking at the head of the group, asked, puzzled, "Why would I do that?"
