The Warden registry placed the expedition in a narrow chamber beneath the tower. Three white lines descended from the ceiling and ended above a stone table.

Sera remained at the door while Ferra arranged her copper pins around the table’s three corners.

Hajin kept his arm uncovered, and the gold mark from the first heart rested beside the torn pathway left by the second.

Vella stood at his other shoulder with her medical light banked low, watching the two marks like rival pulses.

Ferra studied both scorched lines together and gave the diagnosis. "The first rhythm is no longer inside your sample, though the tattoo remembers the shape of its refusal."

Hajin answered her with his own condition for any testing. "I can reach the eastern heart again if the city permits the contact, though I want the third rhythm visible before I answer either one."

Sera opened a white record and gave the council’s line. "The council permits observation, but touching a heart changes the registry’s response and may awaken a district order."

Eirwen looked at the three descending white lines and insisted. "Then every test carries public risk, and the city should record which people are beneath the heart before Hajin reaches it."

Rumi marked the eastern line while Nari marked the western one, and Juna traced the northern path through the ceiling with one raised Wing.

The city answered by dimming the eastern line, brightening the northern path, and placing a white pause across the western mark.

Aria displayed a notice above Hajin’s wrist after the three lines settled.

[Three heart positions available, sequential Phase Lock contact possible, simultaneous retention unverified]

’The system can name three places,’ Hajin thought while the lines waited, ’though it still gives me one body to stand inside them.’

Ferra placed a copper loop around the center of the table. "Start with the northern rhythm, then return to the eastern sample without moving your arm."

Hajin shook his head slowly and rejected the memory surrogate. "That measures the tattoo’s memory, not a live position, and the city needs to know whether one nervous system can hold both."

Sera watched the white lines and voiced the council’s hope. "The old custodian answered all three without leaving the engine, so the council expects the test to succeed."

Hajin looked toward her and cut the council’s hope down. "The old custodian may have used a structure that no living body can reproduce, and expectation is not evidence."

He opened Phase Lock, and the eastern heart responded through the floor with a pulse that tightened the gold mark around his forearm.

The northern line brightened at the same time, and cold pressure entered the torn pathway beneath the tattoo.

Hajin kept both hands still while the two rhythms pushed against one another, then pulled his right wrist toward the northern line.

The eastern pulse faded before the northern rhythm reached a stable shape.

Aria displayed a warning above Hajin’s wrist as the second rhythm cut across the sample.

[First heart frequency lost, northern rhythm incomplete, live retention failed]

Hajin lowered his stung arm and reported the failure plainly. "The first heart disappeared as soon as I tried to reach the third, so sequential contact still loses the position behind me."

Ferra tightened the copper loop and confirmed the hard limit. "The tattoo can carry a pattern, though the nervous system cannot keep three active locations present through one pathway."

Juna folded her Wing and gave the image its weight. "A city heart is a place, not a spell, so the body has to be there when the heart asks for action."

Sera looked toward the high ceiling with the city’s fear. "The city cannot wait for a custodian who answers one district after another, because danger reaches several districts at once."

Eirwen touched the northern white line and offered the correction. "Then the old custodian was distributed through a network, or the records have mistaken one command for one person."

The chamber doors opened, and an elderly Warden entered with a white mask hanging from one hand.

She stopped beside Sera and addressed the whole argument directly. "The records do not mistake the custodian, though they omit the method because the method ended with the last body."

Hajin kept Phase Lock closed and asked for the sealed thing. "What method did the Warden Council vote to seal away?"

The Warden placed the white mask on the stone table. "Temporary division of the custodian imprint, with each body carrying only the rings assigned to its position."

Ferra’s copper pins clicked against the stone as she reacted. "That sounds like a body split, though the city records must explain whether the divided bodies remain one life."

The old Warden answered them both with the anchor’s law. "They remain one soul anchor, one memory source, and one finite reserve, while every temporary body acts only within the strength assigned to it."

Hajin studied the white mask and asked for the numbers. "How many bodies, and how many Rings does each one receive?"

The Warden looked toward the three heart lines and refused the last detail. "The old archive records three positions, though the final allocation remains sealed behind the council’s living consent."

Eirwen’s pale Shards brightened as she connected the two graves. "Then the city learned the same lesson as the station beneath the moss, because divided defense cannot become divided ownership."

The Warden turned toward Eirwen and confirmed the method’s ending. "Every body returned its memory before the method ended, and no temporary form survived without the anchor that made it."

Hajin flexed his fingers while the torn pathway cooled under Vella’s watching light.

’A solution that divides presence must also divide strength, memory, and failure.’

Aria displayed another notice above his wrist after the host record opened.

[Custodian division record recognized, soul anchor requirement detected, Ring allocation limit unresolved]

Vella listened to Aria’s verdict with her thumb tracing the fresh burn on Hajin’s wrist.

She followed the scorch line slowly, twice, and her mouth curved at the impossible figure. "One soul, three posts, six Rings, so the problem is only a count until we solve it."

Her thumb stayed on the burn until the notice dimmed, already daring the impossibility on his behalf.

Ferra looked at the notice and kept the record honest. "The system has found the structure, though it has not granted the technique or proved the cost."

Hajin agreed with her careful caution entirely, for the record. "Then we do not attempt a body until the record tells us what returns when it ends."

The Warden lowered her old eyes and offered the door. "The archive can be opened, though the council will ask why an outsider deserves a method the city buried."

Hajin looked beyond the tower toward the refugee road and answered. "Because your hearts asked one body to stand in three places, and that demand now hurts the person expected to answer."

Sera opened the inner record and carried the argument up. "The council will hear that argument, though it may still refuse access."

The Stream had done the tally the moment Aria’s panel closed.

[ LurkerNoMore: ] the system just said one body cannot hold three positions, so what is the workaround

[ ShadowMage44: ] bro the archive said temporary bodies, ring splitting arc loading

[ CringeSlayer91: ] six rings three hearts, the math is staring everyone in the face

Rumi marked the eastern heart again, and the line returned with a weak pulse.

Nari marked the western route, and the city placed another pause over the record before the line could reach the table.

Juna touched the northern line with one feather and reported the difference. "The three hearts are waiting now, and they are waiting in different ways."

Hajin opened Phase Lock once more, sampled the eastern rhythm for one breath, and let the line close before the other hearts could answer.

Aria recorded the test above Hajin’s wrist after the eastern sample closed.

[Eastern rhythm sampled briefly, no simultaneous retention, pathway strain contained]

The sample left his fingers cold, and three marks appeared across his wrist before the first faded, each tugging toward a different heart.

He held the eastern mark, but the northern line dimmed and the western pause pressed his ribs. He released the test before the chamber could turn strain into damage.

Ferra caught his wrist when his knees softened, and the copper pins around the table rang in sequence. The city recorded the failure rather than hiding it inside a harmless warning.

He waited until the marks vanished before lifting his arm, leaving the chamber with a failure nobody could misread as permission.

"Three positions can answer through one anchor, but one anchor cannot pretend the answers share a body," she said. She kept him upright while the three marks slowly faded.

Hajin lowered his arm and closed the Chapter on doubt. "Three hearts require three present positions, and one body cannot supply them even with six Rings."

The Warden lifted the white mask and gave him the choice. "Then the sealed archive may contain the shape of the answer, though the choice to use it remains yours."

Hajin watched the three lines descend through the chamber above his burned wrist.

’The city did not give me a division technique, but it gave the limitation that makes learning one necessary.’

Eirwen turned toward the inner door and set the posture. "Open the archive as a request, not a surrender, and let the council decide after hearing the terms."

The Warden pressed the mask against the door, and a fourth line appeared between the three hearts before the lock began to open.

The Warden then opened the sealed inner archive by one handspan.

Hajin kept the Chain lowered while the damaged pathway held, and nobody crossed until the record named who had invited them.
