The western bridge bent above a dead ravine, its white roots stretched between two cliffs while the city pressure pushed every strand toward the gap.

Eirwen stood on the near ledge with one hand against the soil, and the twelve Shards above her shoulders shifted whenever another root split.

Juna held position above the bridge with two Wings open. "The first span is still carrying the carts, though the far side is losing its anchor."

Eirwen replied to her without once turning her raised head. "Keep the upper air clear, because I need the bridge to remember weight while I give it living ground to hold."

Hajin’s voice reached them through the relay from the eastern road. "The refugees are moving, and I cannot reach the ravine before the next heart update."

Eirwen answered him right there with a claim of ground. "Then keep the eastern people moving, and let this road become ours for the time it takes to cross."

Ferra’s voice entered the relay with the sharp medical warning. "Your pathways are still recovering, so a full Zone would burn through the network you haven’t rebuilt."

Eirwen looked at the ravine and refused both temptations aloud. "I am not opening the Forest Remembers, and I am not asking damaged roots to hold a country."

She reached into the satchel at her hip and drew out three arrowheads filled with dark soil from the Alder Court.

Juna glanced down from her Wings and almost missed a stroke. "You carried home soil across the border, and you planned for a road that did not exist on the map."

Eirwen placed one arrowhead against the ledge and taught the principle. "A road becomes possible when someone carries the first ground toward the place that needs it."

She pressed the soil into a crack beside the broken roots, and a thin green thread pushed through the stone.

The thread reached for the nearest bridge strand, wrapped around it, and pulled the white root back from the ravine’s edge.

Aria displayed a notice above Hajin’s wrist through the relay.

[Temporary living bridge seed detected, Forest Remembers partial pathway active, full Zone unavailable]

Eirwen felt the first thread enter her damaged pathways and spoke through set teeth. "A small root still remembers growth, though every lost strand will burn through me."

Juna cut a falling stone from the air above the span. "The seed has caught one strand, but the next cart will break the span if the second anchor fails."

Eirwen drew the second dark arrowhead and assigned the load. "Then the second anchor takes the cart’s weight, while the first keeps the bridge from pulling apart."

She drove the soil into the far ledge through a gap in the bridge, and green roots crossed the ravine beneath the white strands.

The roots touched the far cliff, and a wave of pain traveled from Eirwen’s fingers to her shoulders as three Shards dimmed.

She kept her palm against the soil while Juna descended toward the first cart.

Juna read the living green line and named its price. "The bridge has a living line now, though the line is using your pathways as its return road."

Eirwen accepted the price with a very simple road’s logic. "A return road can carry one crossing, and that is enough if nobody asks it to remain after the people are safe."

Toven guided the horse while Mera kept the families behind the cart, and the white strands stopped twisting toward the gap.

The second cart followed, though its rear wheel slipped when city pressure entered the far anchor.

Juna opened Daybreak Path beneath the wheel and lifted it across the broken root without burning the living bridge.

"The sky can carry one wheel," she said, "though it cannot replace the road beneath the whole convoy."

Eirwen nodded once again and kept the narrow light honest. "Keep the light narrow, because the bridge must learn that support can arrive without becoming another command."

The third cart reached the center, and a black line appeared beneath the roots as the western heart tried to reclaim the road.

Eirwen’s third arrowhead cracked in her hand before she placed it, and dark soil spilled across her palm.

Ferra’s voice warned through the relay from across the ravine. "The black line is targeting the seed, and the next root loss will tear another pathway inside you."

Eirwen pressed the spilled dark soil into the bridge anyway. "Then I will spend one pathway to keep the seed from becoming the heart’s property."

The third seed opened as green roots spread beneath the bridge, forming a web that held the carts, refugees, and the dead guardian’s covered body.

Pain struck Eirwen’s chest, forcing one knee against the ledge while her Shards dimmed to narrow silver points.

Juna looked toward her and asked the only question left. "Do we stop the crossing, or do we move everyone before the roots burn?"

Eirwen kept her pale hand buried deep in the soil. "Move them, because a road that stops at my pain has only changed who it abandons."

On the far cliff the living roots grew thicker, forming a narrow path beyond the bridge. No one had to remain standing on the failing white span.

Aria displayed a second notice through Hajin’s relay while the carts moved.

[Temporary bridge expanded, civilian passage active, Eirwen pathway strain rising]

Hajin’s voice reached the ravine with the closed eastern news. "The eastern heart has closed, and I am running your road now, so hold for me."

Eirwen answered him while green light crawled up her wrist. "Then the bridge leaves the city one last choice, because it can close after every civilian crosses or keep pulling until it takes the seed."

The white roots tightened around the green web, and the ravine filled with a low sound like stone grinding beneath water.

Juna turned toward the final cart and called the weight. "The dead guardian is crossing now, and the far anchor is opening under its mass."

Loccy’s voice came from the northern relay with the dead’s interest. "Keep the body moving, because the road is safer when the dead do not remain where the heart can reach them."

Eirwen pulled the last green root through the ravine and answered her. "The bridge carries the body, though it will not carry the command that used it."

Loccy guided the covered guardian across the final span while Juna held the sky above the cart.

The last refugee stepped onto the far path, and Mera turned back to watch Eirwen’s roots shudder beneath the empty carts.

"The people are across," Mera called across the gap, "and every family has its own record."

Eirwen nodded once more and gave the bridge its ending. "Then leave the bridge, because the soil has completed the promise it was carried to keep."

Mera moved after the others while Juna crossed above her, and the ravine held one empty cart line between the cliffs.

Eirwen pulled her hand from the soil, and the green web released the white roots before folding into the ravine walls.

Three strands broke as they withdrew, and pain passed through her twelve Shards like cold wire drawn through flesh.

Her knees gave at the last root’s burning, and Hajin caught her before the ledge could. He had arrived off the eastern road with the dust still on him.

He took her weight against his chest while the Shards flickered, and she looked up without one apology ready.

"The road was always going to cost something," she said against his shoulder, "and you were always going to be worth it, husband."

Aria displayed a final notice above his wrist while he held her.

[Temporary living bridge dissolved, civilian passage complete, host pathways damaged but stable]

Eirwen lowered her tired arm and gave the verdict herself. "The road lasted long enough to carry people, and that is all I asked it to become."

Juna landed beside them with folded Wings and her own account. "You grew a road without opening the full forest, though the ravine will remember every root you lost."

Eirwen looked at the empty hanging span between the cliffs. "The Forest Remembers can hold the cost later, when it has enough strength to remember without breaking."

Hajin kept one arm around her while the relay went quiet. "The bridge saved the western front, and you kept it from becoming another Zone before you were ready."

Eirwen answered him then and there with the road’s whole truth. "A temporary road can be a complete answer when everyone who needed it reaches the other side."

The Stream had watched an envoy invent a terrain feat out of arrowheads.

[ JunaFanClub: ] the envoy grew a bridge out of arrowheads, best girl debate officially reopened

[ ShadowMage44: ] she paid in her own pathways like it was bridge toll, bro i am not okay

[ NewViewer_02: ] carrying home soil across a border to grow a road later, preparation arc of all time

Eirwen set the three empty arrowheads beside the ravine map like spent medals.

The expedition regrouped around the northern route as the city pressure moved toward the heart nobody had reached.
