All My Summons Become Divine Girls

Chapter 511: A District Stops Being Separate

The Eastern Reach had been the loudest district in the city for two hundred years, and it stopped being loud in the time it took to cross a bridge.

Every body on the far bank turned toward the canal at once, shoulders squaring on the same syllable of an unspoken count.

Hajin felt it through his boots before he saw it, one rhythm under four thousand separate heartbeats.

"The compulsory layer is live across the whole district," Aria reported inside his thoughts. "Every citizen is performing a single shared defense pattern through Common Voice, and none of them chose this performance."

"The pattern is a spear wall."

Eirwen read the forming ranks from the canal wall with cold precision.

"Four thousand bakers, dockers, grandmothers are becoming one militia right now, on a drill they never learned."

The wall moved without a single shouted order, because orders were no longer necessary anywhere in the Reach.

[ ShadowMage44: ] the whole district just moved like one animal, bro, all of it at once

[ NewViewer_02: ] those are not soldiers, I watched that baker drop a tray ten minutes ago

"Then we break the pattern without breaking the people," Hajin said. "Same rules as always, and today the rules are the mission."

Ilyra’s voice reached them across the water through the civic line itself, and it was not entirely her own.

"Consent tokens have been received from every participating household."

The blue lines brightened along the Reach, and the Hearth Share network that had once moved warmth between consenting homes reversed its flow.

Heat plus stamina drained from the houses into the forming spear wall, drawn from kitchens where people had volunteered their hearths for winter and nothing else.

"The network is eating the district’s warmth to feed the pattern," Vella said while her gold sight tore the flow open. "Those homes consented to share heat with each other, not to arm an occupation wearing their own bodies."

An old man in the second rank swayed while the Share pulled strength through his registered hearth, and his hands still held the spear perfectly.

That arrangement was the entire horror of the compulsory design. The bodies never dropped while the network could still take anything from them.

[ LurkerNoMore: ] for the record, this is what a hostile takeover of a utility looks like. every hearth contract in that district just got weaponized

[ whitecoat_ceo: ] the stamina draw is not survivable past four hours. whatever they choose, choose it inside four hours

The chat had stopped being entertainment somewhere over the canal, and started being four thousand witnesses keeping watch.

A woman in the third rank moved her lips around a word the pattern did not include, over and over, like a swimmer fighting a current.

The word was no, and the network could not hear it yet.

Vella had gone still beside the civic stone with both hands flat against its humming face, and her usual warmth had drained out of her voice entirely.

"Vella, can you cut the Share?"

"Cutting is the wrong word for a braided core." Her jaw set as she entered the network through her fingertips against a civic stone.

"Their chosen civic memories run through the same center as the compulsory command. I cut one thread and I cut a wedding, a funeral, twenty years of shared meals."

"I can separate them, but separation needs an anchor point that is still free."

"Oren’s shelters, because those are the one architecture in the Reach that is not networked."

The weather-keeper had broken his own anchors that morning when the council voted.

Oren stood on the far side of the canal with his weather-keeper’s hands wrapped in his own broken anchor chains, and he had clearly reached the same conclusion.

"The anchor shards are yours if you can reach them, Foreigner."

His voice carried across the water without any civic line at all.

"I built those shelters to stand outside the network, and today that mistake is the only gift I have."

"Juna, the canal crossing."

"On your count." Juna’s four Wings opened above the gray canal water in a wide pale-gold fan, each one catching what little light the afternoon still had.

"Loccy, the housing block on the east rank, the one with the children at the windows."

"Already walking."

Loccy rolled her shoulders and started toward the occupied block like a woman moving a piano down a stair.

"Eirwen, roots under the rank floor."

"Growing as we speak." Green light split the cobbles under four thousand synchronized feet.

"Ferra, I need your custody wedges on the civic stone the moment Vella opens it."

"Give me a stable surface and ten seconds." Ferra was already running the wedge calculations on her forearm in charcoal.

Hajin looked across the canal at a district that had stopped being separate, and opened his first two Rings.

"Phase Lock on the Reach’s shared rhythm. If I can hold the pattern’s frequency still, the compulsory layer has to push through me to change the count."

[ LurkerNoMore: ] he is going to lock a god’s rhythm and hold four thousand puppets steady by hand

[ CringeSlayer91: ] this is either the smartest thing he has ever done or the last

"Then everybody works around my stillness," Hajin said. "Move."

The Reach’s shared rhythm struck his locked frequency the way a river strikes a driven post, and the whole district staggered half a step out of unity.

Concord noticed the held note inside the first minute, because four thousand occupied bodies do not stagger by accident.

Four thousand synchronized bodies hit his held note at once, and the impact traveled up through six Rings into his teeth.

Four thousand faces twitched toward individual confusion for the first time in an hour, and the spear wall rippled instead of turning.

It was not freedom, but it was a seam, and every specialist on the bank moved into it at once.

Juna crossed the canal in three Wing beats to put herself between the rank and the shelter row without one offensive motion.

Eirwen’s roots surfaced along the rank floor and bound four thousand sets of boots to individual, separated ground, breaking the shared stance foot by separate foot.

Everywhere a boot came free of the shared stance, a face slowly followed it. The first freed citizen of the Eastern Reach stared at her own hands holding a spear she had never once asked for.

She dropped the spear instantly, fingers recoiling from the shaft as though it had bitten her. Two ranks behind her, a docker did the same, and the chain of dropped spears began moving through the whole formation one freed person at a time.

Vella’s gold entered the Hearth Share through Oren’s first anchor shard, following the braided core toward the compulsory command with a healer’s patience.

And the Reach, which had stopped being separate, began for one block at a time to remember what separate meant.

The First Speaker had said to cut deep, and the first cut was a canal crossing on a gray afternoon with everything they loved arranged around a single held note.

Somewhere under the Reach, deep in the seam the First Speaker had opened forty-one years ago, something began to allocate more of itself toward the surface.

The district’s rhythm pushed harder against the locked frequency, and Hajin’s boots slid a full inch backward across the canal stone.

He planted his heel, reset the note, then held it again, because the whole plan was four thousand strangers plus everyone he loved moving inside one held breath.

Hajin held the note, and waited to learn what Concord would spend to take it back.

Above the canal, the first dropped spears rang on the stone like small bells, and every single ring of them was one more living person handed back to themselves.
