Ferra spent the entire morning building a measuring course out of the silo’s outer yard, and by noon it looked like a festival designed by an auditor.

The course had been her idea, argued over dinner with the one argument that ended all others.

If the engine itself would not wait for anyone’s comfort, then the measurements could not wait for comfort either.

Marker posts stood at every hundred meters along the canal road, plus a bell line ran the whole perimeter.

Loccy had painted distance numbers on flat stones, wearing the gravity of a woman labeling explosives.

"Ground rules before we touch a single Ring," Ferra said, walking Hajin through the course with her charcoal already out.

"We measure three things today. We measure how far it can walk from you, how long it can stand in the world, plus what it can and cannot carry."

"And the answer to the fourth question is no," Juna added from the gate, where the terms bench now lived permanently. "Whatever the fourth question turns out to be, today the answer is no."

The count was given, witnessed, and recorded before noon, because the family had turned safety into a liturgy.

The freed districts sent observers, the wardens sent a clerk, plus the outer camps sent children who sat on the wall with their legs dangling.

All of them pretended this was not the most interesting thing that had happened all year.

One Ring, one clone, one set of measurements, plus one true thing said aloud about the last failure.

Hajin had delivered the true thing at breakfast without even being asked for it.

"Yesterday’s cost was learning the copy will talk to strangers politely while I am not there to be polite for it," he had said over the bread.

Nobody had laughed at that, plus everybody in the room had written it down.

Hajin opened one Ring at the center marker, and this time he built the body the way the archive had drawn it, mission first, flesh after.

"You are the survey assistant for today," he told the forming gold.

"Your mission is to walk the marker line, read every stone, then report the numbers to the smith at the end of the run."

"You will not leave the course, you will not take orders from anyone but me, plus you will return when the bell rings."

The body settled into place, solid, breathing in the cosmetic way it did, then looked at the course with its hands loose.

Spectators later swore it stretched first, like any worker at the start of a shift, though the record shows no order to stretch.

"Understood," the clone said, in his voice, and set off at a walk toward the first marker.

The measuring began after noon, plus the measuring was completely merciless.

At four hundred meters the clone’s outline held perfectly steady.

At seven hundred meters it thinned at the fingertips, the leading edge of distance making itself known.

At one thousand meters exactly, the clone stopped as if reaching the end of a tether.

It stood on its toes like a man at the end of a dock, plus it could not take the next step no matter how it leaned.

[ Boundary Enforcement: Absolute ]

"It is not a wall," Aria reported from the measuring line.

"It is an attendance requirement, because the body cannot outrun the portion of orbit sustaining it."

Ferra rang the signal bell at the exact eight-minute mark.

The clone turned around mid-stride, reported every marker number in a clear carrying voice, then dissolved on its own at the gate.

The Ring came home to Hajin’s forearm after thirty seconds of absence.

The clone’s whole eight minutes arrived in one ordered delivery.

The wind on the course, the smell of the canal, plus the ache of walking in legs that had never been tired before, all landed together.

[ Ring Return Delay After Dissolution: 30 Seconds ]

[ Memory Transfer: On Dissolution Only ]

The inventory tests took the entire afternoon, plus they were where the laughter tried to get in.

The arithmetic refused it completely, and everyone respected the refusal.

The clone could carry a paint bucket, and did, walking it from post to post with civic pride.

The clone could not open Hajin’s inventory, standing at the gate for a full minute while it tried.

It wore the expression of a man patting every pocket he owns in front of a cashier.

"No inventory access," Aria confirmed, to the record plus the chat simultaneously.

"No artifact access, no Stream connection, no separate EXP ledger. The body is a tool wearing a man, plus the man keeps his pockets."

[ Inventory Access: Denied ]

[ Artifact Access: Denied ]

[ Stream Connection: None ]

[ Separate EXP Ledger: None ]

[ ShadowMage44: ] no stream, no inventory, no exp, and it still said understood like a soldier, bro

The obedience tests came last of all, and the obedience tests were the quiet ones, because the whole family understood what they were for.

A body that obeyed only its original was a tool. A body that obeyed whoever asked nicely was a coup wearing good manners.

Everyone at the course had lived through enough of the civic network to know that difference in their bones.

Hajin ordered the fresh clone to stand down in the middle of a stride.

It stood down between one step and the next, immovable as furniture, plus the yard noted the speed of it.

Tessa Varn, visiting the course with the morning bread, asked the clone to fetch water from the canal.

The clone turned its head toward Hajin at the far marker, waiting on permission like a hired man.

"The mission is mine to set, and only mine," Hajin called across the yard. "Nobody else steers it, not even kindly."

The system had waited for the full set of measured facts, and when the set completed, it did what the system does at moments that change a man’s whole arithmetic.

Hajin felt the unlock arrive in his pathways rather than his sight, a door swinging open on hinges that had been oiled by a week of honest failure.

The panel landed without warmth or warning, punchline to a week of failures.

The yard went silent for the space of one breath.

Then the yard roared, plus the roar was four districts deep.

[ LurkerNoMore: ] five and one. the formal numbers, the honest limits, no seventh body, no copied soul. cleanest skill unlock I have ever witnessed

[ NewViewer_02: ] one kilometer, eight minutes, one order at a time. it sounds small until you remember last week he could not be in two places at all

Juna watched the panel with her arms crossed and her ears at half-mast, the posture she reserved for good news she intended to supervise.

"Small numbers," she said, when the noise came down. "Deliberately small, deliberately honest numbers."

"Small numbers that still reach the school street," Hajin said, meaning every word.

He looked down the whole marker line to the far post, one thousand meters away, then quietly did the arithmetic that actually mattered.

Three failing hearts meant three working bodies, eventually, someday, on this road.

Today it meant one body, one Ring, five kept, plus a kilometer of reach that no failing street in this city had ever had before him.

"Tomorrow we test what it actually costs to lose one," Ferra said, packing her charcoal as the light went long.

"Because this family does not deploy a tool until we know the full price of breaking it."

The river heart slipped again under the sunset, plus thirty-one skies remained over the city.

For the first time all week, the impossible schedule of three failing hearts looked less like a death sentence and more like a syllabus.
